Kickstarter preview page is up:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/phalanxgames/826770165?ref=amdknm&token=7c8a9f98

Looks to be about $110 CDN.... steep but I think it will be worth it. Lots in it for the price.

I don't have a box this game doesn't check.

O.K....Napoleon seems to appear nowhere, so there's that.

Otherwise...

I really like the sound of it. The price (£60) is superb. Unfortunately, I don't have 3 friends  :'(  Well...3 friends that a) are close enough to turn up for a wargaming session and b) who would even want to come within 50 miles of a boardgame.

I know it plays solo - but from the write up, it does sound best with 4 players. If my daughter would play, you might even get away with a 2 player game - but I know she wouldn't be interested in the subject.

So - poor me  :'(

Good write-up by first time player:

https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1911917/first-contact-uboot-board-game

This report is spot on!
and saves me a longer and surly not so good formulated write-up ^-^

I played 45 min as first officer (the phone App operator) at the Spiel.... we leaving the harbor to go on Feindfahrt and navigate to a position and patrol until the first contacts and closing in to chase.

if you can somehow assemble 3 friends in the mood nearby (or all drive to a city with a cheap but decent hotel in the middle for all participants) and are able to get all RL interdictions out of the way for that eve. (put away the cellulars!)  i reckon it can be very immersive. its a simulation and it can put real stress on you, almost like work.
also this is not a "we all build a chair-circle and discus the solutions"-game, the captain calls the shots (all shots) and the officers have to get it done asap ..somehow with the always spare and sparer resources

the app permanently generate events where crew member have to be dispatched to help with maintenance or repair and so missing on the lookout or other duties  (i found the rate of failures on a normal non-submerged sail and not in combat a little high and made-up for the game purpose, but that was in October and so just a Alpha version of the game, ...  i am sure the developers honed a lot in the meantime)

i didn't saw a day night circle in the app generated VR of the tower and periscope ... i only saw the day version, and you literally turn your head and body around with the phone as binocular to check the horizon to see 'a dot' in the direction where the look-outs had announced a contact and then switch to a 7x magnification to identify the sightings...

what was not in the game in October (i asked that) was using the deck gun for sinking a merchant usually at night, which was a SOP in the early years.

Actually nope, she's a boardgame enthousiast as well. She got me Great Western Trail and enjoys it very much herself.   O0
But the military stuff doesn't float her U-Boot, no.
I am looking forward to the look I will get once I show her Bird of Prey.  :2funny:

Use your backer number, found in your conformation email, as a U-boat number and se if it has a history.

Mine is U-502.

Since I didn't get to pledge until late afternoon my backer number is 1887. Searches for U-1887 only return results for Mongolian letter Unicode and diagnostics for faulty oxygen sensors.  :(

Unless I become the father of three sons, I don't think I'll ever find 3 other people to play this with in the area.

The game looks awesome, but it would just remain in its box if I'd buy it.

This ! :-X

i checked the Kickstarter goals and

- 88 deck gun
- day night circle  in the App
- weather effects  in the App
what i asked for at Essen are now in the game and unlocked O0

- and also 20 AA  gun soon-ish (about 500 more backers in 22 days)

- the game now has a pause and save function too,  O0
so a solitaire game might be much more doable now.
let's see how automatising of the different roles is done to reduce the workload of the solo player
the app also runs on a PC ! (where video capture is a no-brainer) so a good AAR (or preview) of soloplay might surface

my visit at the Spiel games fair in Essen 25.10. this year will be veeeery interesting :D
if IIRC the game will ready for release (and pickup) at Spiel

Even though the KS campaign never reached the final stretch goal which would have added Enigma encoding and decoding, the developers are going to release it anyway.   That's pretty cool.

Tom Vasel listed it as one of his "Top Ten Most Anticipated Games " at Essen only indicating he hoped it did have all that wargame-y "chart flipping".

U-Boot on display at the Spiel 2018 in Essen :)

it made good progress since last year as you can see in the pictures

I can confirm it was not on public sale, as announced
it will be released in December

i asked especially about playability solitaire or with less then 3 grogs around:
and got the answer they are aware of that problem and the App had made much progress.
it has in the meantime got difficulty levels, and it has pausable realtime (and realtime means realtime, 1sec at the table = 1sec on the Atlantic)
so solitaire you may start the time compression only when all your tasks are done, figurines set, etc  and you are up to it.

and i also asked about saving a session and picking it up later:
it is possible to save a game and continue later, but not at every moment of choice. Surly between missions and when there are no contacts, but not in an engagement
i missed to asked the developer (who immediately recognized me after a year :) - go figure!) on further details on when no-save exactly inside an engagement.

...and now where i am writing these lines, it suddenly came to me that i also had forgotten to asked about 'shelling a freighter at night with the deck gun'  (but i guess it is in the sim)

MACH SCHNELL OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT!!

Someone named Tumba released a crazy-deluxe port of UBOOT to Tabletop Simulator last month (most recently updated May 20th). The table is set on a rusted hulk of the U96 conning tower, in a vomitous tossing sea!  :D (With sea spray occasionally and wind/wave noise!)

This is very much a promotional module, though not official, which leaves out a few key things (such as Enigma codes) to persuade players to buy the game: it's purely intended as a handy aid, not as a free replacement.

Most of the posts for this game on their Facebook fan page are incredible 3D printed U-Boots with beautiful paint schemes. Meanwhile I have yet to even try to play my copy/assemble my cardboard U-Boot.

I admit I'm terribly intimidated to try it solo, even though those that have played it solo say it's totally do-able.

Just do it!  If you've ever played Silent Hunter, it'll be easy.  You can pause whenever you like so there's no pressure.

Also, be sure to read the info on each crew position in detail as presented in the app.  That's where all the rules updates appear.

In my limited experience it is absolutely necessary to make liberal use of the pause button when playing solo. While this may take away from an interesting aspect of the game, it just isn't practical for an individual to manage all aspect of fighting with a uboat in real-time. There is even in a upside in that you can take all the time you like to analyze situations and plan your attacks/escape etc. I'm having a blast with it so far.

Even with multiple players I expect the pause button will be needed while learning the game.
