USS Johnston wreckage...confirmed
« on: April 01, 2021, 02:49:55 PM »
The wreckage of the USS Johnston was originally found in 2019, but its identity was just confirmed with photos of her hull number "557".  May her gallant crew RIP.

Came across this video that details the damage the Johnston received during battle.  Haven't been able to watch it yet with sound, but it looks very interesting.

A couple of minor tidbits IRT the USS Johnson (DD-557):

According to https://www.history.navy.mil/content/history/nhhc/browse-by-topic/wars-conflicts-and-operations/world-war-ii/world-war-ii-profiles/evans-of-johnston--dd-557-.html  Her captain, Ernest Evans had come up the hard way, harder than most. His white paternal grandfather had married a Creek Indian woman just to gain control of her land allotment. He soon divorced her and disowned their child. That child grew up to be his father; his mother was a full-blooded Cherokee. Born “into a world of low prospects and ill will,” Ernest beat what seemed impossible odds. Amid intense prejudice against Native Americans, he graduated from a nearly all-white high school, joined the National Guard, transferred to the Navy enlisted service, won an appointment to the Naval Academy without political pull, and graduated with the class of 1931.  He was awarded a MOH posthumously for his actions at the Battle of Samar.

The AAR from Johnson's senior surviving officer is here: http://ussjohnston-hoel.com/322/376.html
A diagram of the major damage suffered by the USS Johnson is here: http://www.navsource.org/archives/05/pix2/0555708.jpg

Very interesting, thanks for posting.  :bd:  I guess Johnston kinda saved Admiral Halsey's butt.
