Title: Whats on your painting table/workbench?
Post by: TheCommandTent on July 08, 2012, 09:47:36 PM
This is the thread for miniature gamers to post pictures of whats on your painting table, workbench, or any WIP.

I'll get this started.  In the picture below you can see I have a few projects going on my painting table.  The mass of figures in the middle are a recent purchase I made on eBay of painted figures that I am giving a wash and basing.

I've got a bunch of stuff in midstream but my most recent purchase is a cheap model of the Lost in Space robot. for some reason I'm really stoked to paint it. Don't know why, but it's what I've been looking forward to for a couple of weeks while I was out of town.

It's an easy build and only about three or so inches high in the photo. I'm not sure I'll even fill in the seams as it's probably more work than is worth. But it's got me really jazzed. At this point the rest of the model is mostly clear parts so I'll prime and start painting what's assembled and then add the rest once it's done.

I am assuming that won't be for gaming but it will make a great desk toy. :)

It will no doubt serve as an early warning system against zombie attack. Now all LB has to do is change his name to 'Will Robinson' and he's good to go...

That is an excellent point. The constant warnings for someone other than myself are likely to be ignored. I should have thought of that before I paid for it.

Yes, I'm thinking it will make excellent office decor. Until the zombies come. Then I don't have to be faster than the zombies - just faster than my robot (who will be shouting, "Danger, Will Robinson!")

my table/workbench is dedicated to some type of wargame 99% of the time...naturally  ;)

ASL or VG Carrier taking up most of the time these days.

the table top is plexiglass. I throw a older sheet of plexiglass on top of that to convert it to workbench mode.

Good point, Rekim.

That image I took wasn't from my "workbench." That was from a side table where I sometimes file and assemble models in the family room. When I'm ready to actually start making a mess I'll head to my library which has a big drop cloth on it.

Or sometimes I will bring a lapdesk into the family room, but only for more detailed painting - the fam likes me being in the room with them...sometimes.

Several months ago I scored two great deals on eBay using some left over gift cards.  Given how slow I am at painting I lucked out by getting the great deals on some prepainted figures.  I believe they are GW LOTR Moria Goblins but I will be using them in my fantasy campaign.  In the picture below you can see most of them on my workbench how I received them waiting for some touch up.

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1187.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz397%2FSoccerDJ04%2Fgoblinsbefore.jpg&hash=da99ac539b15c7618b3d9303dda81fa95082fbd0)

As you can see I bought them mostly painted and glued to their bases.  The goblin flesh was not a bright enough green for my taste.  The need for a brighter green is because they also all need a dark wash to bring out the details. So after adding a brighter coat of green, basing them and giving them a black wash I have some bad guys for my campaign.

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1187.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz397%2FSoccerDJ04%2Fgoblinsafter.jpg&hash=860e9dad5bc9b922d084b5bebd37120152259662)

Not a very good picture but my camera has been acting up.  I did a simple brown base with a light highlight.  Grass and other plants don't survive long under the trampling feet of goblins.

Cool.

I've got a bunch of Flames of War minis that are in mid-paint. I'll probably break out my airbrush to do them. Just been putting it off because I don't really feel like I'm ready for the setup (not that it's huge, but I'm nibbling around the edges).

You've got an airbrush!  Im jealous.  I am such a slow painter and generally don't paint alot at once so I haven't been able to justify getting one.

I don't paint as much as I should (or could) but it's nice to have. I bought a good dual-action brush. I still don't really have the hang of it, but when the kids go back to school I'll break it out and start catching up on stuff. I've developed something of a backlog of Stuff To Paint.

Do you use it just for base coating or can you get some of the detail work done with it?

Not really sure.

Mostly I use it for quick a quick base coat. However I have three needle sizes and one is for fine brushing. I've not used it yet, but I suspect that it will work well enough. In the past I did use it once to spray on some camo on a Lehman Russ scale tank. I'm figuring that I'll use it to give some nice camo splotches to my Flames minis.

Wow. Sweet tower Gary. Nice finish.

Is your ASL session a gathering, or a single opponent?

My (store bought) tower is currently in use on my workbench

Agreed - nice towers.

Last couple of days I've laid a base coat of dark yellow on my late war Flames of War Kraut tanks.

I used two different brands to see their results and was surprised that he Vallejo Model Color and the Tamiya were clearly different from each other.

I also applied some of GW's new rust wash on the treads and was disappointed by the results.

Well, I have one.

But my wife likes me to sit in the family room and paint/game there. Doesn't matter if I tune them out or not, she just likes having me in the same room. She wanted me to buy a Games Workshop paint station so that I could paint in the family room even though I have a perfectly good painting table in my library.

So most of the time I spend time there (like now).

However, in the near future I'm going to need to break out the airbrush to get the camo I want on my Flames minis, and that's going to best be done with some canvas to catch any overspray, and that means the library.

I hope you went ahead and bought that.  I don't think I've ever had my wife say she wanted me to buy something for the hobby.  :)

I have more of a man corner.  I have a table and my paints set up in the corner of a small room.  Renting a small house does not lend itself to much room for "my stuff" as my wife likes to call it.

Was in the LGS today and they had a huge rack of Flames minis that were on sale for 40% off.  I had a fleeting thought to pick up a bunch of them because it seemed like such a great deal.  Then I remembered I have no where to store or work on them atm, so the window shopping of minis continues on my end.

My first Flames tank was a Tiger I bought just to have hanging around on my desk.

40% off is a good deal, but makes me wonder - is there no gaming interest at that store? Generally that's a sign they're liquidating inventory because there's not much interest.

I just completed the camo schemes for a squad of Tigers and KingTigers. I took the less-is-more strategy with a bit of dazzle paint inspiration.

What's kind of interesting to me is that from a top-down view it appears the camo from the turret aligns with the camo of the hull. That is entirely coincidental - I painted both pieces separately and made no conscious effort to have any alignment. One shot shows the turrets off so you can see the full modeling of the hull camo.

Probably. I'm on the fence - I have the heavy/dark wash from Army painter, but I'm not sure what that will do to them. I may apply it to my wirbelwinds to see how it turns out.

Those would probably do well with a light to medium black wash.  It would really bring out the detail on the tanks, especially from a top down perspective.

Forgive my ignorance on the subject but what does washing your model mean in the context you guys are talking about?

I've been toying with the idea of revisiting my childhood hobby of model making as a teaching tool for my kids so I'm genuinely curious.

A wash doesn't mean "soap & water" (though washing your models before you prime them is often recommended, that isn't what we're talking about).

A wash in this context means: after the paint job is final, putting a finishing coat on it to add shadows and such.

A wash can be a watered-down color or it can be a special finishing coat. In any case, the idea is that a darker coat (and this can be brown, blue, grey, black or something like it) seeps into the cracks around the model and darkens them. It creates a higher contrast and brings out certain details. The wash also will cling to the edges or raised parts of the model such as a hatch, to help define those better, too.

This article seems to explain the concept and also provide some decent before-and-after images: http://www.scalemodelguide.com/guide/painting/paint-washes/

A wash is also helpful for people like me who are not the best at painting the details or "painting within the lines."  It can cover up small mistakes and blend things while bringing out the detail so the figures look good while you stand above them moving them around the battlefield.  Just don't inspect my figures with a magnifying glass.  ;D

Just to add to that; a little dry-brushing can also bring out the high-lights and, if done carefully, can really enhance the finished look. It does take a bit of practise, but its worth the effort.

I still can't make dry-brushing look quite right on my figures.  However, I use it when I build terrain and it really adds to the finished look.

Part of the secret to dry brushing is to have very little paint. Dab the brush in the paint, then wipe maybe 70 - 80% off. Then do the dry brush.

I've heard if you use the regular grass but put it in plastic cement the blades stand up. That might be one of the secrets.

I just randomly smear white Elmers glue on the base in a thing layer and then cover it with the flocking I mentioned above.  I let it sit completely covered for about 10-15 minutes so they glue can absorb some of the flocking and start to dry.  Then I take the figure out and gently blow off the lose flocking.  This does a surprisingly good job of making some of the grass stand up.  After everything is dried I usually blow it off one more time just to get rid of any more lose flocking.  Its very simple result but it works for me.

I'm a bit short on time this morning so I haven't had a chance to compress these to a reasonable size. Therefore I'm going to offer links rather than embed them in the forums - the four images total 16 MB and I don't want to clog up anyone's browser. Will try to get them compressed tonight for more convenient viewing.

I'm afraid they show off my lack of skill more than anything, but hopefully they will be appreciated in the spirit of things rather than wholly on their deficiencies. There are still some little things to clean up (rust on one of the road wheels, for instance) that I still need to get to, and I'm not happy with the rust wash from GW. But I think you'll be able to see where I'm going with these.

Cool! Was the cottage part of a kit? Did you 'distress' it? from it's original state?

You know something LB, I really like these a lot.  Apply that talent to baked goods and you could make a mighty fine birthday cake for some Groghead child, like me maybe?  :D

good work - how about some smoke from the damaged cottage (god knows how - black and grey cotton wool?)

The cottage is from JR Miniatures. It came as-is, but unpainted.

BTW, the scale is Flames of War. I should have put a quarter or something down there for scale. It's only four or so inches across.

That's a good idea. I was thinking about teasing out some threads from a cotton ball, but I wanted something of the full effect of seeing into it to be left. Besides, transporting to and from games the smoke is likely to be crunched. I don't really consider anything I do "done" as I'm usually not good enough to be able to leave anything alone. There's always something that needs to be touched up.

I received several of these JR miniatures models as a gift. I'm working on some more now. Will share them as they get closer to done.

Awesome work LB!  I understand the hesitancy to make smoke coming out of the building but I think it would really add to the piece.  You could just do a thin layer at the base of the smoke so you can still see through it into the house.  As for transporting it to games, its cotton and you can just tease it up once you get it on the table.

I've had several people comment on adding smoke - so much so that I guess it just needs to be done. I may have to work on it tonight.

Taken from the anatolisgameroom link TCT shared above.

Look at this example of an SU-100 and it's weathered armor.  Look at the 'muddy' tracks.  The picture probably doesn't do it justice but this model kind of looks like a birthday cake with frosting.  I think it's because the proportion of the weathered elements do not match the scale of the model itself.  The rusted areas, the mud, the dents and dings on the armor are all handpainted with a brush that has a resolution of a millimeter or two.  A brush with a resolution of 80µm to 250µm is needed to scale these affects properly with the model.

I've always been a big fan of the Jagdpanther for some reason. It's lines are attractive. Not much of a TD, but it sure looks good.

So a while back I bought a set of them and have had them lying around. Recently I picked up some red color primer at Lowes figuring it was about the same rust red primer color the Krauts used on their equipment during WWII.

Here's a pick with the primer on:

And now a pick with the base coat over the top armor. Didn't mess with the road wheels yet as I was using them to hold the minis. That's next, along with a second base coat, then on to the fun.

The good news is I have no army list that includes them. Grey Wolf doesn't have specs. I can proxy them for a number of rather unsettling TDs including stuff like the Ferdinand (I think - have to double check) but I've been unable to find the exact tank in my list. However, I did pick up that book with the Devil's Brigade in it. I don't remember seeing the Jagdpanther in it but will double check today when I see you.

I really just bought them because I like the look and wanted them hanging around the house. But I wouldn't cry if I found a list that included them. Heh.

Heck no.

One of the things I like about this scale is they make the vehicles with some heft to them. I haven't weighed the mini, but just picking it up there is probably a pound  worth of pewter in each of them. Pushing them around the battlefield feels like you're actually doing something.

I am working on a full review now.

Overall the quality is very good. The white one - dreadnought - however, was in fairly rough shape. It's resin and had a fair amount of bleeding over the mold. Nothing that some time with a file couldn't fix, but it wasn't that clean when I got it.

The pewter are great. The undersides on all the Romulan vessels actually have the bird of prey etched into them for ease of painting! I exchanged email with Mongoose and they indicated that by next year they hope to have etching on the underside of the Klingon Romulan ships, too.

The pricing on Amazon may be the best on the web. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0088DE5KM/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0088DE5KM&linkCode=as2&tag=grogheads-20

Lookin good LB.

However, I'm somewhat concerned since my Americans will be looking down the wrong end of the barrel at those Jagdpanthers.  :'(

Heh.

I'm a bit late coming in on this one LB, but if you need any info on actual Jagdpanther units, I have a copy of Nafziger's OoB, and there is a lot of stuff in there I can dig out for you if you want.

Wow. Thanks for the offer. LMK what sources you like and I'll see if I can find them on Amazon. Thanks!

The three volumes by George.F.Nafziger are more-or-less my bibles for German OoB, and all the info is taken from German records. I'm not sure how easy they are to obtain now, and I know I had to search round a fair bit to get my copies, and that was a few years ago.

The German Order of battle - Infantry in WW2
The German Order of battle - Panzers and Artillery in WW2
The German Order of Battle - Waffen SS and Other Units in WW2

These are text only books and are chock full of unit and equipment details, covering just about every known unit, including non Germanic stuff that served (willingly or otherwise).

It also charts organisational changes and brief unit histories. They are worth thier wieght in gold for anyone interested in WW2 German Army OoB's. It also includes details of all the SS stuff, Luftwaffe ground and para formations, including Flak, and even Kriegsmarine arty.

Bummer. My priming using sub-par Lowe's primer is still a mistake I wish I could forget. It works OK on 100mm tanks, but I'm not loving it on my Romulans. I think I can persevere, but......grrr.

For stuff that small you probably need a high quality primer.

I know. Nobody around here carries Tamiya Fine Primer. I'll probably do another query on Amazon. For a while it was hard to get due to the quake/tsunami.

I've heard good things about the P3 primers

http://www.thewarstore.com/P3Primers.html

Also some mention about automotive primer which is very thin.  Check out this discussion on TMP.

I've tried P3 and they're OK. Not tried automotive primer. IMHO Tamiya Fine is the best primer ever. Expensive, but it goes on like skin - the model never even looks like there's anything on it.

so, entered the sullen and goth inhabited GW for the first time in many years only to find its now practically a gaming club only - you can buy the game books, the codex, and the WHFB army books - as for figures they can only be bought online either at home or via a link to the studio on a pc in store!! vast stock reduction - i remember when the games tables were in the middle and the entire wall space was taken up by lead and plastic figure kits - no more.

So bought the £30 (ouch) painting guide, some brushes and a painting workstation - will order the two Orcs when i get back home

nope - trees, hills, forts, castles and all kinds of WHFB fluff over here

towers, mines, rocket pads and all kinds of WH40k stuff over here

a whole wall of codex, army books, LOTR books

a whole wall of primer, paints, guides, white dwarf, WH40k novels

and a little PC like a cash machine in the wall for ordering figures for next day delivery to the store

apart from the kids and their games and the revolving demo cases in the window, not a figure in sight

Haven't painted minis in a dog's age (and Ihave had the dog's to prove it), but when I painted Napoleonics, that was the alternative for mass painting.

Strange - I walked (in a crab-wise sort of way, whispering my usual mantra 'I'm cured, I'm cured') passed my local GW in the Metro Centre, and it seemed to be business as usual with a games table and lots if mini's in store. So maybe you have just a local phenonomen at your store (if its in Solihul - then all becomes clear....)

This week I was able to finish the five figures below.  They are 1/72 German figures from Italeri.  The picture isn't the best and it is made worse by the fact that the figures frosted a bit after I sprayed on the matte sealer.  Needless to say I was not happy about that.  They do the job when you are playing with them at arms length on the table, just don't look to closely.  :(

I really like the way you've based them - that is an aspect which is often overlooked and can spoil what would otherwise be good figures, but yours look great. Nice job indeed.

Now I'm looking forwards to some Bolt Action AAR's  ;)

Wow that is one heck of a package deal.  It is in 28mm however.  Also those are multi-part figures that you have to assemble.  While that might be nice for getting different poses they can be very fiddly.

Those ISUs are bad news. 110 points a piece? Sheesh.

And some IL-2s on priority call? Clearly I'll be reaching for Wibelwinds.

I can see some real fun developing from a Red Bear/Grey Wolf head-to-head :)

I'm getting very close to finishing my FoW forces.  I've painted about 70% with the rest purchased already painted.  I had to take all my stuff out to rearrange my cases to make room for my new Soviet forces.  I thought it was a good opportunity to snap a few photos.

Left on my "to do" painting list:
18 - US Infantry Rifle Teams Stands
15 - T-34/85 obr 1943
3 - ISU-152
3 - SU-85
1 - Il-2M Tip 3M Shturmovik

I'm sure I'll have more to paint to feed my addiction.

DV8 is a minimalist painter, but he has the right eye for color. He's not much for detail, yet somehow his work always turns out well. Ask him for photos of his Britainian Dystopian Wars fleet for proof.

Interestingly, its actually the only surviving example left. Its a T18 Boarhound, built in the US for the British Army. Only 30 were built before the war ended and the order was cancelled. They did not see action.

Yep, it was a new design, but its only a 37mm gun.

Top right picture is driving me mad, to the point that I've sent the picture to Bovington to find out what the damn thing is.
I have a suspicion that its an M6E1 heavy tank, but I'm not totally sure. Whatever, I can no longer find it on Bovingtons website. The pictures were taken around 1963(ish), and I do have a few more somewhere. Note that just peeping out behind the T18 is a Hetzer.
Title: Re: Whats on your painting table/workbench?

Whatever that thing is, it looks based on an M4 hull of some kind. Very wide treads though. It's not a Ram or Ram II. I don't think it's an M6 or M7 either as the turret design doesn't match. The gun looks smaller than a 76mm and the turret front is flat or sloped but not curved. The mantlet looks to be separate from the turret and attached to the barrel. The turret shape is odd as well, very low with those lower side shot-traps. The hull gun mount and track width seem to rule out an M-10 TD.  ??? ???

Can you post the other pix?
Title: Re: Whats on your painting table/workbench?

I need to dig out the other photo's, which I'll do during the week, then get the missus to scan 'em for me (yes, that's why they're wobbly, she did them whilst playing WoW).

Anyway, I googled the M6 and it does look like that's what it is. Its most certainly not an M10 or a Ram, and it did have a fully enclosed turret. I have a feeling that it was designed to be be a heavier replacement for the M4 but did not make it due to the wars end, plus the M26 was making its first appearance. Notice the front lower hull where the transmission is housed - definitely looks like an late model M4 component, and i think thats basically what the M6 was - a beefed-up Sherman.

I'm hoping that the archivist at Bovington will provide some answers. Interesting innit?

I've found it! it's the T14 Assault tank. It was supposed to be produced in the US for the British as part of lend-lease but was dropped when the Brits decided on the M4 line as cruiser and the Churchill as heavy. It has the narrower mantlet shown in the picture and sloped hull sides. Also note the shape of the hull mg enclosure.

Aha!
I found the original photo's and on the back I had written a note of what it is - its a T14 Heavy Tank.  Obviously, the T designation indicated a test / experimental / pre-production version, so not sure if it ever got to the M14 designation stage.

A quick google brings up some info, and it seems that it did use components from both the M4 and M6.

I'm away to find more :-))

I got an answer back from Bovington today, confirming what we now know. The vehicle is currently in the 'reserve' display.

Hello Bob,

Thank you for your email

The tank in question is the Assault Tank T14 (the first pilot tank remained in the the US whilst the second one was shipped to the UK).  It weighed approximately 47 tons and had a maximum speed of 24 miles an hour and was armed with the M3 75mm gun.  Britain wanted an assault tank but the American Amored Force never wanted the T14 and the contract to produce the tank was never started and all development work had ceased by December 1944.

Yours sincerely,

Stuart Wheeler

Unless, of course, he was referring to the equally ugly Soviet T-28 Which the Finnish referred to as the 'Mail Wagon' (I'm guessing that after facing it in the Winter War they were not impressed):

Stagger, great pic's, and yes, it was the US T28 I was thinking about. I had forgotten that early war Ruskie monstrosity. The Finns in the Winter War did not seem to be impressed by anything that the Russians fielded, probably more due to poor deploymeny / doctrin and logistics than anything else. Interesting period though.

Changing to 'good looking' tanks, one of my favourits is the Black Prince, whilst not all that successful, it did pave the way to one of the all-time classics; The Centurion!

Yep, the Centurion was a good looking tank and, unlike most post ww2 British tanks, saw some serious action with the IDF. IIRC some 90-odd IDF Centurions held off almost the entire Syrian Army in the 'Valley of Tears' during the 1973 IAW. (OK, a little hyperbole but you get the point  ;)).

BTW, the IDF was able to do some amazing things with surplus M4s against much more modern tanks as well. Not that those Shermans were exactly stock anymore mind you...

I haven't worked with lead mini's in 20 years (damn!) but received in the mail today an ebay purchase that I made the other day for "Blue Moon 15OW-100 15mm Cowboys (31) Miniatures Old West Gunslingers Gunfighters".  Not sure what got me in the mood but I broke out TSR's old RPG "Boot Hill" and played it with my son the other day.  We enjoyed it very much.  I remember liking the top-down counters but boy, they sure were flimsy, so I did a search and found those mini's for $15.  I've glued a few of them to 1/2" counters as bases (so that they'll fit on the Boot Hill map) but I'm contemplating doing the whole primer and painting thing.  Another time and money sink for wargaming - just what I need to do, right?  Well hell yeah, love that kind of stuff.  I'll probably stop by Hobby Lobby tomorrow and get some cheap paints and primer.  They're only 15mm so how bad could I mess them up?  One of them is a female gunfighter - I'll use her as my guinea pig to see how bad I'll suck at painting.  :)

I'm currently writing a Game Assist Program (GAP) for it that will:
1) Generate Player character's, including figuring out First Shot values for any weapons selected by the player and base To Hit %'s.
2) Generate any number of NPC's, with weapons and First Shot/To Hit values.
3) Allow the player to select any number of Player Characters already generated, NPC's pre-generated and/or any of the "Fastest Guns that ever lived" historical characters to conduct a gunfight or brawl that will:
A) Determine who has the first shot(s) based on First Shot value + modifiers and moving state or surprise
B) Show all succeeding shot sequences up to the ROF of each participants weapon vs everybody else
C) Show the final To Hit % for any shots taken
Brawling is still a work in progress but I want it to automate it in the same fashion.
The program won't roll the percentile dice for you - I want to do that myself (though I could have it do that, but what fun is that?).
I'm pretty excited to get the mini's on the map and use the "GAP" to fight out some massive gunfights that would of been a total nightmare to conduct if trying to figure it all out manually.

It's my first attempt ever at paining mini's. And I am loving it. :)
A childhood interest is finally getting some serious attention and I have started playing Wh40k with a friend. It's expensive stuff, though, so I am a bit amazed that it is so popular amongst youth.
I can barely afford a decent army and I have a good playing full time job! ;)

Title: Re: Whats on your painting table/workbench?

Thanks guys. I am pretty much a novice at painting miniatures, but for a first time project I am quite pleased so far. I discover new techniques as I go.
The sand granules stay on with a simple method: I use an old brush to create a thin layer of glue and then dip the base into a pot of sand. Let it dry and then brush off the loose sand.
I use the white hobby glue for this.

I use a 50/50 mix of Elmer's glue and water. That should do the trick.

I use this formula to seal flocking on my bases sometimes.  The great thing about Elmer's glue is that if you coat the base with it as it dries it absorbs the sand and secures it, drying clear in the process.

Yes.  I need to find a better matte finish since the Valspar gets cloudy.

Thought I'd show everyone the finish product.

Two squads of 15mm Americans for Bolt Action primed and ready to be painted.  Now to find the time.

In other news I have a backlog of figures to be primed but with the cold weather its not looking like I'll get to them until spring, unless we have a day that warms up slightly or a friend's workshop I can use.

Thanks, Stagger. Hat's off to you.

I have a second set my wife bought which complements this nicely. Going to work on that next.

It'll sport a new heavy cruiser, a second dreadnought, a new light cruiser, a second battlecruiser, and a war destroyer. Can't wait to dig into these then get them painted. These things are just awesome to have hanging around on a desk, let alone to game with!

Does putting the stickers on Command and Colors blocks count?

Last night I finished up about 40 blocks.  Household 6 was very amused that I was using a toothpick to attempt and get the best alignment of the sticker on the block.  I've got some photos, which I'll post here in the next few days.

Yes and no.

I have places I can go. I haven't set things up yet nor decided exactly where I want to hang. Partly it's an embarrassment of riches and partly because I'm still unpacking.

Nothing so sophisticated for me, sadly. I use a pretty substantial pair of common nail clippers and manage to achieve fairly consistent results, although I tend only remove a small clipping to get rid of the excess from the sprue.

Probably a dumb question but is clipping counters more of an aesthetics thing or is there some functional reason for doing so?

Talking about "clipping"...I remember one or two people on here (can't remember who) pulling me about my counters. I think I was doing an AAR for Hornet Leader. Someone asked me to clip the counters...it clearly bothered them.  ;)

tbh, it kind of did me, but not to the point where I was about to waste a couple of hours clipping little bits of cardboard off 4 corners of small cardboard counters (though I think I did eventually)....however that person pointing it out has now afflicted me with their illness - because I did just that with my Band of Heroes game!  :D

It's nothing but the sign of a person with a really sick OCD problem. I would never deface my counters by cutting off the corners.
They will claim that is cleans up the corner "fuzzies" and make the counters fit better in the hexes..... but it's nothing but vandalism....  :P

I always like how some of the counters come with a hanging chad. Just a slight flare on the top right. It makes them look like they're moving.
Title: Re: Whats on your painting table/workbench?

Supposedly, the counter clipping all started because of AH's small 1/2" hexes with 1/2" counters and having the corners of the counters "snag" counters in an adjacent hex with the corners that overhanged into the adjacent hex.  That or you can compare it to circumcised vs ala naturale.....
