A multiplayer Destroyer/Silent Hunter with a Strategic layer, so you could actually fight the North Atlantic naval war/  "They say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one...."  :)

It would sure be nice if the legal issues could be unsnarled for WW1:Centennial so that patching could continue on it, sigh...

Granted, not a huge forward progress, but also practically impossible aside from wishing.

I know Fire and Maneuver kinda sorta is trying to do this, but really what I'd kill for is just a straight polished remake of Age of Rifles.

So far I just don't get the proper feel from FnM.

Not sure if qualifies for a "war game", but the type of game I most yearn for is a true Geopolitics game, sort of back to the days of Balance of Power and even the old SSI title Geopolitque game.  They weren't perfect, but none of the more modern attempts have ever provided the kind of game I would want.  I want to control all facets of running a country including all the economics, diplomacy stuff that happens in the real world.  Want to support various causes, have the potential to lead to minor conflicts, and ultimately the next major war if it gets that far, and possibly ending nuclear.  Basically a true real world simulator.  However, I don't want to actually control any of the actual armies if it comes to war, I want to give macro direction and orders and let things turn out based on other factors.  I know this will never happen but all the stuff happening in the world today makes me want this even more.  Super Power 3 is coming out and I doubt it will scratch the itch either.

Probably a close second, something like the old Computer Ambush SSI game.  If I recall correctly, soldiers had backgrounds and you "felt" their loses because of it.  Again not perfect and basic stuff, but some reason I felt a connection with controlling the squads.  Would love a squad level game that made you truly bond with your men, not simply nameless people without backgrounds you grow to like.  As you take loses, you bring replacements in also with a story.  Make me think twice before I send the soldier into harms ways.  I know Burden in Command is in development, hopefully some day it comes out, but not entirely sure if it will provide this level of experience either.

Pretty sure I am out of luck with both, but a person can hope:)

A remake of Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe.

A game that has a detailed strategic component involving management of bases and airfields, manufacturing and production sites, resources and assets with a light research element. A layer that lets the player manage squadrons, pilots and aircraft, plan complex missions and then actually take part in them by jumping into any one of the aircraft.

Delicious.

I'm also still waiting for the most perfect 4x. One that combines the depth and complexity of Aurora with AAA graphics for space and ground combat and a useful streamlined UI. I want to be able to control fleets and ground forces and when conducting ground operations, I want to be able to land forces and fight in turn-based or even real time combat.

Remake of Age of Rifles

or

A remake / better version of "Muzzle Velocity" by Digi4Fun (1997). This game was ahead of the technology, so had issues. But the concept allowed the player to fight WWII battles at the battalion level or so, but then also allow them to pick any unit and fight first person.

or

A remake of "Campaign" by Empire Interactive (1992)

or

A remake of Pacific Storm by Buka Entertainment.

I love a secret weapons remake.  Rowan's Battle of Britain falls into this category, could be worth a remake, as most of the versions have trouble with modern windows.

Along the same theme of multi layered fight sim / game.  I've always had an idea of a Vietnam version and call it AirCav.  Basically manage an aircav troop dynamically through Vietnam in a strategy layer.  When units make contact, you jump in and take control.  You could fly helos and fps soldiers or just manage the tactical like a rts.  The gameplay would be the typical counter insurgency patrolling, but at certain points in the time line you would take part in major historical operations.

A computer version of Avalon Hill's Republic of Rome would float my boat, using detailed AI & Crusader Kings type personality traits to create a really authentic feeling senate.
It was tried with Pax Romana, but despite some great concepts the game was almost unplayable.

Oh yeah, if we're calling sims Wargames (And why not) then I've got a few other on my wishlist.

The Rowan classics, MiG Alley and Battle of Britain,  Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe,  Strike Fighters 3,  The Dynamix Aces series, F19 Stealth Fighter ect ect.

Something that's in the middle of the road in accessibility and values fun AND realism.

That really should be doable. A lot of the gumminess in that system comes from rule-processing, which a computer would be very handy for. When I ran an experimental forum game for RoR, here at Grogheads several years ago, I participated as the umpire or gamemaster and tried thus to reduce the load on the players by doing all the calcs and rules myself.

Marry that with some rule variations for factional types, and then some player-personality types on the AI... it really should be simpler to do than trying to AI a Paradox game! Expanding out to the fan-made prequels (Latin and Italian Eras, and the super-mod Republic of Carthage) shouldn't be too hard once the basic framework is in place. Have to buy the rights to those first, but I'm sure their creators would appreciate the compensation.

Indeed - I think a lot of board games would be relatively easy to implement on the PC - after all, you've got the rule structure & gameplay already in place. I've very much enjoyed Labyrinth, Twilight Struggle & Pavlovs House conversions - would be great if someone could reach into Avalon Hills's back catalogue.

I still like the idea of a proper DC-esque war game (not necessarily set in Ukraine) where you have to manage a bungled invasion and get events like "The Great Leader is having an existential crisis, you have been issued a mortar team and a platoon of AFVs to secure the airfield" every other turn O0

For those who don't know, there's already a super well-received Panzer Corps/Steel Panthers Lite style game where you defend Ukraine from the Orcs.  As long as you don't mind the somewhat cartoonish style.

Also, it's a steal at like $3!

I have to admit to a certain desire to play wargames that are from an earlier period -- distant but still well-documented -- to escape the realities of the current world.  So I'm doing lots of
late Napoleonic stuff -- mostly bloodbaths and not very heroic but not involving, oh, you know, tanks, machine guns, guided missiles (I guess Congreve Rockets are okay)...instead you get
lots of dead horses and tubrils and such.  sort of a minimalist escape.

A modern remake of the FASA classic war game, Renegade: Legion Interceptor, that provided more accurate play-balancing and a couple carefully-designed campaigns.

I've never run across a sci-fi game system that so intuitively yet accurately represented what if might feel like to have your ship shot out from underneath you.     <:-)

Circus Imperium!

Based in the Renegade Legion universe, its a chariot racing game where instead of horses, you've got some alien monster thingy hauling your ass around the track.  Whip it enough to keep it's speed up but don't whip too much or it may turn around and eat you or worse.  Throw spears at your fellow racers!  Try and board their chariot and take it over!  Ben Hur can suck it as this baby's got it all!

With today's computer's processing speed and data storage capacity, would a computer version of the never-to-have-a-game-completed boardgame behemoth "Campaign for North Africa" be possible?  There may be some group out there trying to get a full game of CNA finished. but the problem is that the earth will eventually fall into the sun.

I heard a couple of years ago (via someone posting here), that a CampNorthAf implementation exists for The Operational Art of War III or maybe IV (I forget which... maybe originally for 3 but works in 4).

Reportedly, it contains all the rules and mechanics, but since the computer takes care of all the heavy lifting, players can yeet it along in a quite reasonable amount of time!

I'd love to see a game that concentrates on sieges over the ages from the Assyrians to the Gunpowder Age. The developments from the Renaissance to the Pike and Shot era are probably the time of greatest technological progress. It would be fun to compare an ancient Roman siege like that of Jerusalem in 70AD, Constaninople 1453, to the methods used in the 80 Years war or at Lille in 1708 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Lille_%281708%29.

The closest I've seen is the siege mechanics in the 7 years war where units are involved in digging trenches and setting up batteries, but something that includes mining, circum and contravallation, sorties, raids, bombardment, repairs, fires, disease and starvation effects and so on would be interesting.

Given that most battles we see in wargaming are field battles it would be nice to see a game dedicated to the siege at both an operational and tactical level taking into account engineering, logistics etc.

Back in the day I played SPI's Siege of Constantinople and Siege of Lille and they were both fun and very different in play style. I'd love to see this done in detail on the computer.

I'd like to see Advanced Tactics Gold beefed up to the scope of Shadow Empire, i.e SE game mechanics but on a procedurally-generated Earth-like planet with tech from the middle of the 20th century.  Or is that more of a mod than a new game?

I'd like to second the Flight Commander 3 recommendation. Could be updated with new aircraft and new missions. I can't remember if FC2 had an AA environment, but sprinkling in some ground attack and SEAD elements would be cool if it wasn't there before. Things have certainly changed since it came out anyway.

Cheers,

I was thinking about this the other day with the thread about Microprose and the upcoming B17 games.  One of the games is literally a reboot of Mighty 8th.  If Microprose is willing to do that for Mighty 8th, why not Battle of Brittian (the Falcon4 of WWII sims) ?

Vietnam is frequently referenced in Black Ops, but I would rather to be a teenager making their way through the jungle at night while struggling to stay dry and hope Charlie isn't hiding in the woods. I want lucky son to be playing loudly on the radio when I order my chopper gunner to the scene. My least favorite television show this generation was probably WWII, but it deserves praise for not making your character a member of a global special operations squad.

Just create a grunt for me to fight in the forest.

We had started on a 'Next War in Europe' title back in 2018/2019 using our Strategic War engine.

We almost got the starting date right as well (February, but a year too early). This was meant to focus on Russia taking on Ukraine followed by the Eastern members of NATO and the NATO response. Unfortunately events overtook us!

Tons and tons of good suggestions in this thread.

Picking up on what has already been mentioned; Dynamix Aces of the Pacific, Buka Entertainments Pacific War, and Lucasarts SWOTL.

What I really want is a remake of Empire of the Fading Suns.  Except no story line just sandbox mode and an updated engine handling simultaneous turn based land and space battles.

I would just like CC3 to be remade, at a Real Red standard, with todays ai and graphics with a dynamic campaign.

Perhaps Panthers in the Fog as well.

Kampgruppe was my first computer wargame back in my Amiga days. I would love a modern day version of it. As well as Battles of Napoleon too.  :dreamer:

^Never had a chance to play Kampfgruppe...I remember seeing it on store shelves before I had a PC or Amiga :/

I'd actually love something along the lines of War in the Pacific: Ensign's Edition.  The game play would be as rich as the original WiTP:AE but not requiring me to manually select each shell type for each gun on a ship every time I fired it.    ;)

The fact that you recall seeing it on store shelves means you are officially old..... >:D

True that. I ordered it through the mail as I recall. There were no retail stores anywhere back then. Then Sears and Radio Shack started to carry some of the games. That was a 45 mile drive for me.  #:-)

Old man shit

Was lucky to have a hobby shop next county over (+/- 30 miles-ish) that was blessed with a bounty of stuff for a nerd boy to drool over; models, RC vehicles, etc. as well as RPGs and boxed wargames.  Down side was the people behind the counter seemed to have been weaned on lemons as they had the most sour disposition I've seen in any store owners.  Bought a few things there for sure, but really wasn't fond of the atmosphere.

-they may just have disliked kids, though.

I remember when I was 13 or 14 there was a dime store (remember those?) within bike riding distance of me that actually sold hardcore wargames.  I'd save up my lawn mowing money to go there to buy my games, many of which I still have.

Those were the days, never to be replicated again.  :'(

Dime store was the nickname for Woolworths.   :)

^ I'll second that!  Something a little more abstracted would be welcome....WitP:AE just took things a bit too far!

I haven't delved into Warplan: Pacific yet but I'm hoping that's a what we're discussing.

Rowan classics, MiG Alley and Battle of Britain.  Heck,  I would settle for just being able to run  Battle  of  Britain 2 with the BDG patches on windows  10 and 11.

^ This!  I've tried so hard to get BoB2 to run on my computer, but it just won't work.

Along the same lines, I'd love to see something like Falcon 4 again...not BMS, which like WitP:AE just took things too far.  Falcon 4 (and Freefalcon's iteration) were the perfect balance of realism vs. gameplay.  The Thirdwire series went a bit too far to the gameplay side for me.

Although...the Thirdwire games like War over Vietnam, but with a persistent multiplayer campaign...oh man, I might not play anything else.

I remember them too.  They still have Woolworth's in Australia, but they'd more remind you of a Target.

Many years ago, my friends and I hung around a hobby shop on Saturdays (and would always meet up there after work/school). The owner carried everything and would special order at no extra cost. Also had a spare room im the basement with a couple of ping pong tables set up. miniatures, DND, massive Squad Leader battles and so on.

He carried all of the SSI games.
