Title: Friday Bloody Friday
Post by: FarAway Sooner on January 29, 2021, 01:32:49 PM
How is it so late on the day and we don't have a "Who's Playing What This Weekend?" thread going on yet.

I'll represent my hometown with a video from the best concert venue in North America.  And any song that contains the line "The trench is dug within our hearts" seems awfully topical for the current age...

For me, it'll be mostly Shadow Empires.  Unless a 3rd faction declares war on me at the same time and snaps through my paper thin screen of units on my Western Frontier, in which case I'll just ragequit and probably play a game of Eador: Lost Horizons or fiddle around with Wizards and Warlords some more!

Good song choice....!  Getting more and more back into board wargames lately.  But on the PC it's more Tiller ACW and Napoleonic's.

Well thanks to the wonders of You Tube I have very belatedly discovered the treasure trove that is Spiderweb Software.

Just in my first couple of hours into Avernum Escape from the Pit and absolutely adore the scale and quality of the writing in the game.  I find the game mechanics old school but very easy to pick up and am having a blast.....these games should see me through the next decade  :)

We must be like minded. I had this strange dungeon crawling bug that was nagging at me, so I decided to give The Bard's Tale Trilogy: Remastered on Game Pass.

I remember reading the Atari ST, an other computer magazines when I was a kid, and seeing the ads back in 1985, but I never got to play it.

I'm enjoying the hell out of it.  I did a brief run with the pre-rolled "A-Team" but I decided to give it a go with my own party.  It's grindy but its fun.

My favorite band of all time! Until they started to blow chunks around 2000. I will always love U2, though. I also learned this morning that one of Bono's sons has a band of his own named Inhaler. Not as catchy as U2 but the one track I heard by them was pretty good.

Ahem...anyway...this weekend I will be playing Panzer Corps 2, Partisans 1941, Order of Battle: Red Star and perhaps some Wolfenstein: Youngblood.

Not tried the Bards Tale yet but the remastered Avernum series is perfectly playable on modern PC's  and all Spiderwebs newer games are clean and crisp and designed for Windows 10 which you can't say about a lot of old school games in this genre.

Queens Wish was only released in November I believe and is the first installment of a whole series of new games.

Writing in games is a much underrated skill in terms of immersion I feel.

Spiderweb nail it.

Hmm just looked up Queen's Wish on Steam and it reminds me a bit of Times of Lore from Origin Systems, way back in the late 80s...in a good way.

"Blow chunks."  LOL.

You know, you just reminded me that I bought Bard's Tale Trilogy like donkeys ago and have yet to play it.  Maybe I'll boot it up tonight?

I'm certain some sort of submarine simming is on the horizon, and I'm seriously considering jumping back into WitP:AE.  Maybe some Command: Modern Operations.

Breh I loved the original Bard's Tale...also back in the 80s. I guess the 80s were the best decade of my life and now it's all downhill? Good Lord...

After I play Get the Car Inspection Sticker I'm planning on finishing up my Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia campaign.  Just a few more territories to conquer and I win on normal difficulty.

Heroes & Generals just got patched with some new features including lowering the amount of grinding needed on a few items I'm dying to unlock.

Continuing my Fields of Glory: Empires game with Jason.

Nice song choice!

I continue with my multiplayer Dominions 5 games rolling along.  In between, shall be Wizards and Warlords, and probably firing up the newest version of Dwarf Fortress, which fixed a lot of the stress related bugs that would inevitably doom any fortress.

Someday, I need to figure out how to get Shadow Empires working through Linux.... I'd really like to fire that one up again, and I'm too damn lazy to simply restart the CPU to load Windows.

I've also got the temptation to slap Distant Worlds back on... seeing the released footage for DW2 has me wanting to scratch that itch once more.

Well the wind is supposed to howl 30-40mph sustained and gusts to 60-70mph tomorrow so I think I'll skip the yard work and get caught up on my PBEM's and if I find some time to play after that I think I'll dig into Shadow Empire or maybe Flashpoint Campaign Red Storm.

I've been in a dungeon mood - and it has not worked out well.  I tried Wizardry 7 - and on a bigger monitor the pixelization was too much.  Then played Wizardry 8 - and remembered how slow the combat was and hit the first "the leveling system for monsters really sucks" part and decided to quit.

I'm now trying Divinity Original Sin: Enhanced Edition which I've never played and hope that works.

Plus, I'm writing a review this weekend.

Jupiter Hell is whooping me sideways.  I reached a major boss (possibly the final boss) and he mopped the floor with me.  I started a new character right away but got stopped just outside the gates of Hell.  Once you get a sense of effective tactics and how to take down tougher enemies, the RNG aspects are quite manageable and you can reliably get a character into the late game in 60-90 minutes...... assuming you're not moving too fast and walking into bullets before you realize you're being shot.   #:-)

On the other end of the roguelike spectrum, I've been slowly learning how to get a character out of the early game of Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead.  This game, being a huge open-world survival sandbox, is a bit tedious in comparison.  It easily takes 5-10 hours of progress just to get out of the "early game" phase and get reasonably well-equipped with the skills you need.  Losing all that can be frustrating, but it never feels like total bullshit.  Closest I can think of to a "total bullshit" moment was playing a map I lovingly called "Downtown Killville," since I maximized the city density settings and minimized the forest/natural area settings.  This map was a hellhole and every street corner I rounded would turn up about three dozen hungry looking zombies, and some zombie dogs and feral runners right on my tail.  I went into the city for supplies and ran out of stamina just trying to extract myself back to where I spawned.  Stamina is basically your lifeline in C:DDA, unless you're really lucky or have a contingency up your sleeve for the exact situation you're in.

I might do some wargaming at some point.  Armored Brigade has been my most recent groggy timesink.  The AI isn't great but it's still good fun to generate a battle as the attacker and spar with some AI commie defenders.   :knuppel2:

Having watched the first 15 mins of a playthrough of Queens Wish on You Tube I had already thought it would be my next purchase....the wastrel second son of the Queen being sent off unwillingly into danger appealed to me (as did the  wry humour ), and your review reinforced that decision.

One of the greatest songs of the 80's. Amazing music and real political message...in the 80's, musicians were engaged politically and were trying to change the world for the better. Now?

For some unknown reason to me, i spent a lot (really a lot) of hours (anpit 50) playing Endless Space last week and had really fun with it. I'll play some more this weekend and now some Star Wars Starfighter as well.

Fun fact: U2's War album featured a lot of electric violin, including in parts of Sunday Bloody Sunday. I think it was a session musician who sat in and played it. When I was a kid the idea of an electric violin blew my young mind.

I was wondering how some of you guys on the east coast are making out.*  We had two back to back really strong storms here in SoCal; the last one was a real bear.  They typically only get worse as they move east.  I had good portions of the roof of my storage shed rip off and all sorts of debris in my backyard.  I must have pulled 10 pounds of leaves out of my pool.

*In my surfer's mind there is only east coast/west coast.  That weird middle part...just cut it in half and figure out which coast you're closer to...

Alternately, when your kids get a little older, you can just sleep in and let them play Mario Kart all morning.  That's what I did this morning.

The wife has been working 60+ hour weeks for about 3 months now and I've effectively been a single dad the last two weeks (includes a full-time job on my side and one child in eLearning!), so I decided today was a day to be a slacker parent!  First world problems, all of these...

I consider him the type who kills a boar with his bare hands when out hunting. So definitely a classic bayonet. The electric violin is just to cover up his lack of any finesse that would be needed to play an acoustic one.  :)

Yeah, the default release comes with a few different tilesets you can use.  It's just set to ASCII by default.  I like ASCII with a lot of games, but Cataclysm is not one of them.   :buck2:

The most popular (and best, imo) tileset doesn't come with the game by default due to some copyright issues or some such.  This one is called "UndeadPeople" and it looks awesome, and it's fairly straight-forward to set up.  https://github.com/SomeDeadGuy/UndeadPeopleTileset

AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH   :pullhair: :pullhair: :pullhair:

My best run in Cataclysm: DDA just went down the drain.  I chose the Helicopter Crash start, where you choose between a few different soldier classes (I picked Nat Guard, as it was the cheapest in character points) and start fairly well kitted up, but with grievous injuries.  I found an evac bunker and boarded up the windows and blocked off the doors, and had plenty of gear and wood and food to last me for, like, days at least...

Then I figured out how to get cars moving.  A whole new dimension of the game opened up.  I found out you can Examine a car/truck/bike/etc the same way you examine objects on the map, and it tells you everything that's wrong with it and what needs to be fixed.  It turns out, there's more driveable vehicles lying around Pelosigrad than I thought.  I was mobbing around in a sedan for a while before the doors got ripped off by hungry zombies, and I ended up having to leave it behind.  Luckily, there was a pickup truck down the road, ready to go, just like a bad Deux Ex Machina in a zombie movie.

Well, I snagged the pickup and took off in it, but in all my wisdom I decided to go back and get the spare tire and scissor jack I had in my sedan's trunk.  Long story short, I only barely made it back into the pickup in once piece (without the spare and jack), took off, and quickly lost control and drove into a lake.   #:-)

I dragged myself out in one piece - fairly badly injured, but no broken bones or anything.  Then I got mobbed on by a big angry group of... I don't know, flower people of some description.  CDDA is full of wacky enemies and these guys were faster than effing zombie dogs and feral runners, and killed me about ten times as fast with venomous bites.  I was dead before I could get more than 15 tiles away from the lake I crashed in.

Rest in peace, Frank Froste.  :'(

Started playing this with your recommended tileset. I have no clue yet what I am doing, but having fun regardless. :)
First character I made started in some kind of shelter with another dude who requests me to find an American Flag, so we can raise it at the shelter.

I go outside and follow the road a little until I reach some houses.
Turns out everyone's turned to zombies, including the kids, who also seem to have gotten lightning quick reflexes!

I enter one of the houses in search of useful stuff, when one of those kid-zombies comes crashing through the window and sprints through the kitchen towards me.
I only have a swiss army knife to defend myself with and I can't outrun that kid.
To make matters worse, a zombified police K9 comes running into the house as well.

Suffice to say it didn't end well for me. I survived a whole 29 minutes! wow... :D

That was just the start. Supposed to get 8-12 today on top of the 5 or so that dropped yesterday and last night. Plus another 1-3 tomorrow morning.

I hate the white stuff. Growing up my old man worked road department so I was stuck shoveling with every storm while my friends got to have snowball fights and enjoy other winter activities.

:DD Sounds about right for a first Cataclysm run!  BTW, the traits Fleet-Footed and Parkour Expert will allow you to easily outpace most enemies without burning stamina by sprinting.  I almost always take those 2 together!

Some advice for Divinity: OS - While there's less "grimdark" it doesn't mean it's less deadly.  Two: Try to get the right synergy with your party members. I won't give spoilers, but one of the best features I liked about this game is you aren't stuck to a particular class. You can craft weapons and armor, and with skill they get better than the ones you find.  Use skills or spells every chance. Another one is to be careful with your exploration. But it is a well done game, the puzzles are fun too. But like most RPGs you know the drill: Save often, and talk to everyone. You will get clues better that way.  :)

Feel like crap, although it's  all in the chest now. It's been a shit day. Wife is working overnight again, nanny called out due to the snow and I've been stuck in the house all day with the kids. Thanks for asking, bud.

Being home alone with two sick children is pretty bad.  Being sick yourself at the same time is pretty much living hell.  I don't think I've ever had to do that, thank goodness.

I am a total baby when I get sick, like rub my tummy baby.   :-[

I hope you and the family will feel better soon Jarhead.

-

The first day of February offered a reminder that, though air temperatures are not below freezing, it's still winter.

A light drizzle froze when it hit the bricks and transformed large parts of the city into a skating rink. Getting any work down outdoors took a while yesterday, but on the positive side: as I had switched having any kind of mood "off" for the rest of the day, I decided to spend some time on frustrating game sections that bugged me for a while.

I ended up making some decent progress in a Neverwinter Nights module and got some turns done for Panzer Campaigns.

Do you have a snorkel?

Weird weather.  There has been almost no snow at all in my corner of Canuckistan this winter.  I think it's only snowed twice and there wasn't enough to stick either time.  It's just been insane amounts of rain for almost 3 months.

I myself in 7 days get to go back to Green Bay for my 2nd shot of the Moderna vaccine. I even requested off the next day because that one's gonna be a bear from what I've heard. The 2nd dose is stronger than the 1st.

Thanks, CJ. My wife got the Pfizer vaccine and the second shot definitely wiped her out, but it wasn't too bad and only for about 24 hours.

Good luck and I am happy you are one of the lucky few!

Yep. Great game. I still play it from time to time. There are some brilliant mods out there for it. Have you got the bayonet mod for FOTs - it looks really cool.

I can also recommend a couple of Samurai movies set in the period to add to your Samurai mood, both with good sword fighting scenes...

When the Last Sword is drawn (about a member of the Shinsemgumi [Shogun's secret police]) and;
The Twilight Samurai
