At the beginning of the last century (around 1900 - 1913) Russia was the worlds largest wheat exporter.  Then came WW1, Communism, seizing farms in forced collectivization, starving the Ukraine, etc.....

In 2016 and 2018 Russia is once again the worlds leading wheat exporter.  This is attributed mostly to the collapse of the Russian Ruble, the high values of the US Dollar, and finally getting stable property rights and modern farming technology in Russia.  Unlike a lot of other products which have had sanctions placed on export to Russia, I don't know of any country that embargos farming tech.

Some of the world's richest farmland in Russia, the Ukraine, Romania and other countries are finally producing something like the proportion of world food exports they had prior to World War 1.  This is a very important story because it lowers worldwide food prices which lifts a lot of people out of poverty.

I was fortunate to visit Romania a couple of years ago and the soil is amazingly rich.  It was a major food exporter going back to Rome - except during Communism or when it was involved in wars.  The intensity of crop cultivation was similar to what you see in the USA Midwest.
