Title: Steam Summer Sale 2019 Thread
Post by: AchillesLastStand on June 25, 2019, 04:21:05 AM
From all due reports the Summer Sale is supposed to start here in about 6-8 hour.
Several things on my wishlist that could possibly warrant a purchase{depending on discount}.

Field of Glory2{Plan on purchasing FOG Empires}and want this to use the battle export system.
Gary Grigsbys War in the East/West, depends on discount.
Age of Empires 3 Collection, hopefully 75%off.
Not sure what else atm but wish Steam would bring back the flash sales, seems like ever since they have started doing refunds they stop doing flash sale.

My primaries are Divinity OS 2, pillars of eternity 2 dead fire, They are Billions, and similar to you FoG2 in anticipation of Empires.

Nothing special for me, the sales aren't really that much different than all the other sales throughout the year, although more might be on sale at the same time.  Maybe if something is super cheap I'll take a shot but thinking this will be a sale that I largely pass on.

If y'all get the AoW3 collection on sale, Gus and AirB, drop me a line and we can do an mp game! I'm already doing two (one with AzTank and Dave from the Crisis Grogs, one with AzTank and Yskonyn although I think Ysk is staleing his moves right now. ;) Fortunately if I remember to set up a game timer the computer will do some basic processing for your turn if you stale out.)

Note that for mp play-by-email games, the beta for which works really well so far, you have to do a free register with Triumph games. The front-end UI makes this fairly easy, but whenever they patch the game this tends to break the registration for a while!  ::) Fortunately most patching is done, but I've seen two such problems myself. Triumph eventually fixes it.

You know when AoEIII was released I paid a lot of money for the deluxe boxed version and wound up being very disappointed. I never bought either expansion. But I would like to try out the Asian Dynasties expansion - for whatever reason I think now, years later, I would enjoy it.

Got my credit card paid off and my finger on the trigger. Maybe the vacuum created by everyone going to the site will suck some of the hot air out of the atmosphere around here and cool things off a bit.  :coolsmiley:

It'll be interesting to see if Steam changes up the sale any now that they have a competitor like Epic.  Hopefully we'll see some better deals than they've had the last several years.

I don't think they will, there used to be some pretty great deals with flash sales but they haven't had those in several years. Will see though. Ex Valve employees have said Steam has been a cash cow. All they have to do is keep the servers running and the storefront up and maintained and that's pretty much it. As much as I love Steam I can also list several reasons why I hate it with a passion. Good work if you can get it I suppose.

I used to hate having to check the site every 8 hours for fear of missing a flash sale.  I'm glad they're gone.  You can see all the prices on day one, and you have two weeks to decide your budget.  Suits me just fine.

its amazing how the kick-off of the sale always breaks the internet. i mean, are people really waiting for the second the sale starts to look. Everyone and their grandmothers are trying to access the site. Its a 2 week event for christ's sake...whats the rush? Its not like they are going to run out of codes.  :timeout:

Time of reckoning. I have about 90.00 of games in my cart right now, including Civ VI Gold for ~28.00:

Buy Sid Meier's Civilization VI Gold Edition
Includes 8 items: Civilization VI - Vikings Scenario Pack, Civilization VI - Poland Civilization and Scenario Pack, Civilization VI - Australia Civilization & Scenario Pack, Civilization VI - Persia and Macedon Civilization & Scenario Pack, Sid Meier's Civilization VI, Civilization VI - Nubia Civilization & Scenario Pack, Civilization VI - Khmer and Indonesia Civilization & Scenario Pack, Sid Meier's Civilization VI: Rise and Fall

...but does NOT include Gathering Storm...hmm...

I got it and the pacific version.  I personally like the pacific one better.  I gifted the panzer one to my son and he loves it.  He won't play games with nato symbols, but if you make a strategy game with 3d animated graphics, he's all over it.

As a rule, no.  If it isn't on sale now, it almost certainly won't be for the whole sale.  That's the way it has worked for a while now.  Here's the price history (https://isthereanydeal.com/game/terraformingmars/history/) for Terraforming Mars.

I can't recall if the Pacific game is out of EA yet, but I'm waiting until then. (It's called Strategic Mind: the Pacific.)

I like Panzer Strategy. It is very much the equivalent of Fantasy Wars / Elven Legacy compared to Fantasy General, except that the user interface is a little bit wonky, and the game feels slightly unfinished in its presentation (like there are a few missing sound or animation assets which feel like they're supposed to be there). The English dubbing is usually painful (and doesn't always match the text, so it's kind of important to both read and hear things). Hitler's slightly southern American accent is hilarious. But at least there's something going on at that level of presentation!

For a Panzer General successor, you could do a lot worse, and none of the other successors use 3D Unreal4 engine gfx and maps. Also, the maps aren't the same as the equivalent missions in the original PG. Mission design is pretty good.

Optimization is not the best, so it runs clunkier than it should. I can't effectively play it on my Surface Pro 3 with Win 8.1. So I haven't played it as much as I otherwise would have.

The worst I can say about it, is that it falls between two stools for me. I usually want to play punchier things on my home computer when I have the opportunity, and I can't play it on the Surface. And after all, as slutty as I am for PG games, this is another variation of PG. So I haven't played it as much as I want to. I'm still in Case White, if I recall correctly. But note that the game starts in Spain helping out Franco so that you can build and give core units experience across a few missions first! (The tutorial opening up the first spanish map is scripted, and if I recall testing correctly it gives no experience to your units, so it can be skipped after the first time except for plot color.)

Supply is a lot more important than usual in games of this sort (more detailed even than Order of Battle for comparison), and can affect your choices among targets and where to focus effort as you're going forward.

You should check out some YT LPs of the first mission or two, to get a basic idea of how the game distinguishes itself.

It's definitely worth the $15 (half off $30) currently on sale -- if you like this kind of game. It's just a little too unpolished to convert someone to liking this kind of game, in my opinion.

Meanwhile: remember the developer who published two versions of a more detailed PG-ish game for Operation Barbarossa through Matrix/Slitherine? One hook being that the maps would always be 1km hex scale?

Well, for their second or technically third game, they stopped using Matrix and published the Africa front (through 1942) as the super-generic sounding Army General, on Steam. It's on sale now for $5 and I just picked it up.  :smitten:

Note that this looks more like a traditional PG game, not the Unreal Engine 4 bling of the Panzer Strategy / Strategic Mind games.

While I'm on the topic of Barbarossa games from Matrix, Panzer Doctrine is also on sale for about $7.50. And I just picked that up, too. This uses a relatively unique point-to-point continuous-time system for managing divisions across operational maps for the Barbarossa campaign. I liked the demo, so I'm glad I thought to check on whether it was on sale right now!

My damage so far:

Droid Assault £3.59 - because it's a blatant homage to one of the best 8-bit games of all time, Paradroid  8)
Atlantic Fleet £3.49 - I quite fancy a turn-based battle of the atlantic
Scavenger SV-4 £5.69 - this looks incredibly intriguing.  Brings to mind the game Corporation on the C64, although I'm sure it won't be much like it

Total spend: £12.77  8)

Do games ever come on sale later during the sale?  I don't remember.  I'm trying to get my gaming buddies to buy Terraforming Mars, but it isn't in the sale right now.

I have most of the OOTP versions since 2002. EARLY adopter of this franchise!

So Evil Bank Manager is on sale for $7.19.  Looks like an interesting concept and has 78% positive reviews.  Anyone try it?  They also have a bundle with Generals & Rulers plus Third Front for $11.57.

I have both. Not bad..good for about a dozen hours each before becoming repetitive.

About 50 cents/hr isn't bad.  Anyway, I have a short memory so repetitive isn't a problem.  After a closer look at the bundle I think I'll stick with just Evil Bank Manager.

Hmm, almost bit on Battle Brothers previously.

I've honestly never been thrilled about Cossacks 3.  I've watched a lot of lets plays and reviews, and there's just something about it that always kept me away.

It's as was said, it's really an old engine and concept with a facelift.  I can't help but think that we've come farther along on design.

Since the sale started, or just before, I'm at:

Steel Division 2: Whatever The Package Is That Has the Campaign Upgrades (not technically part of the sale)

American Truck Simulator plus most or all current map DLC (technically on sale before the sale)

The Settlers Rise of an Empire History Edition (basically a $5 upgrade to Settlers 6 or 7, which I already had)

Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney trilogy

Arma: Cold War Assault (cheap port of the original Operation Flashpoint to Arma 2 or 3 engine, sort of)

Arma: Gold Edition (I don't even know why I got this when I have Arma 2 and 3 -- I should probably refund?)

Bomber Crew plus Season Pass

Northgaard plus all DLC (I finally pulled the trigger on this one)

That Italian fighter for IL-2:BOX or GB or whatever we're supposed to call it now, plus the upgraded BF-109 and FW-190. (Not that I'm planning a fighter career anytime soon, but I figured I should have some upgraded options for multiplayer in case I need them.)

Army General and Panzer Doctrine as noted above.

Some Things From the GoG Sale Recently (not repeats, but which I'm still including in principle as a self-critical observation  :crazy2: )

Wish I knew your intentions so I could have warned you away from Depth of Extinction.  I got an early development copy, and also the copy that landed on Steam as part of the early development copy.  Lots of repetitive combat with seemingly no real storyline.  If you understand the basics of turn-based, squad level combat it is amazingly easy.

I would send it back for a refund if you can.  Jagged Alliance 2, X-Com (most any of them), Wasteland 2 and several others are much better games of this type.

Well as I recall Northgard was shite and I had it refunded.  I don't remember the details now, only that it wasn't really the game I expected; it abstracted too much and had some weird mechanics that made it a bit too gamey.

Having said that, I acquired another copy via my Humble monthly subscription so perhaps I'll fire it up again just to see.

Title: Re: Steam Summer Sale 2019 Thread

So, would you like to buy as many games on Steam as you like for a little under US$10? $9.74 to be precise?

Totally legal, simply broken -- for now, until Steam catches on and fixes it.

Ahem.

Step 1.) Buy Starbound ($9.74) -- unless of course you already have it, in which case you can buy as many games on Steam as you want for free.

Not kidding.

Step 2.) Subscribe to the Summer Sale Soda Mod (for Starbound obvs.)

Step 3.) Activate this mod in game. (I haven't done this, don't know how, but presumably it's easy.)

Step 4.) Mine 1 block of dirt. Practically the easiest thing to do in the game.

Step 5.) Convert 1 block of dirt into 500 sodas, thanks to the mod.

Step 6.) Click to drink all 500 sodas at once.

Step 7.) Automatically earn 5000 Grand Prix points thereby, 10 per can drunk. Equivalent to about five British pounds sterling in Steam cash.

Step 8.) Repeat steps 4 through 7 for as many blocks of dirt as exist in a game of Starbound. (Note: it's a procedurally generated infinite universe, so infinite blocks of dirt can be harvested this way for infinite steam cash.)

Step 9.) Convert GP points to vouchers for Steam cash. All the steam cash. All of it.

Step 10.) Buy everything on Steam you have ever wanted. Literally everything. Using your accrued Steam cash.

Step 11.) ...profit? (Unsure if buying as many games as you want on Steam for either almost nothing or for literally whatever you previously paid for Starbound, counts as "profit" technically.)

Thank to the Spiffing Brit for figuring this out.

Just checked my cart...the Deserts of Kharak 'deluxe' pack, an an ordinary day, runs about 70.00. Right now it's 13.85. Now that's a sale.

GOG pretty much has the same sale. I think you get a little bit more of a break on steam if you buy the bundle. I had already bought the base game on sale a while back so I was OK just getting the DLC on sale.

Re the exploit (arguably not a hack, although someone did code to take advantage of it): I don't know if Steam has patched it yet, but it does take a little more oomph to get it going with any efficient effect: you need an autoclicker for example (can't just one-click to drink all those sodas), and while soda cans can be made from one dirt block, I get the impression you have to be relatively far developed in the game to have that ability.

Also, the rate of return in Steam cash for points generated (10 points per can drunk), is more like 5 pounds sterling for 2000 cans drunk. So there's a practical limit on how much cash can be generated this way over time. Even with an autoclicker, it might take 1000 seconds to earn 5pds this way. (I don't know where the sterling symbol is on the keyboard I'm using, and I'm too lazy to do the minimal work of looking up the current conversion rate into dollars, or even whether Steam isn't just doing five dollars instead of five pounds in North America for 20000 voucher points or whatever the rate is. Although I'm not too lazy to type all that out. Ironically.  ::) )

This happened to me several times over the years. After so many days they are just gone. I never tracked it to see how long it remains in the cart before it disappears. Usually I do something with the items before they are gone. I think they should have the option to say "If I can't decide what to do in three days just automatically buy the damn things for me".  ;)

Kingdoms and Castles - I've liked what I saw online so I thought it would be fun.

I haven't played Kingdoms and Castles for several major updates now so slight pinch of salt required, but I very much enjoyed it at launch.  It's a relaxing and not terribly demanding city builder with some slow-paced combat thrown in later.  The launch version was already pretty good, and judging by all the updates the game is now even better.  I don't regret buying it at all!

Graviteam Tactics: Operation Modular
Rise of Industry
Civ 4 Complete (on Steam to back-up my ancient disks)
Arma 3 Laws of War
Arma 3 Creator DLC: Global Mobilization-Cold War Germany
Crusader Kings II: Holy Fury
EU4: Dharma
Homeworld: Deserts of Khazak
Deserts of Khazak Expedition Guide
DLC-Soban Fleet Pack
DLC-Khaanah Fleet Pack
DLC-Soundtrack
Kingdoms and Castles
Star Wars: Empire at War Gold (on Steam to back-up my ancient disks)

Total 99 bucks....oops. Over budget.

Man, I totally forgot to look at some DLCs.  I wanted that ARMA 3 Germany DLC pretty bad, and I definitely would have pimped out my install of CK2 some more.  Ah well, there's always Labor Day.

My total haul was F1: 2018 and at the last minute last night I bought Dive to the Titanic for a buck.  It sounds rather annoying until you complete all the quests and unlock the exploration mode (if I read things right) but I figure for a dollar I'll give it a go.

While not part of the sale, I do intend to pick up Wings Over Flanders Fields: Ultimate Edition soon, probably this weekend.

Didn't pick up a whole lot especially being that my library is backlogged with games that more than likely will never be finished.
Managed to pick up..
RUST, 8 bucks.
Rising Storm 2, 8 bucks
And Fields of Glory 2 for 14.99. For Sunday only Fanatical had it for 7 bucks as well as discounts on all the DLC, right now they have it for 14.69.

Doesn't really count for Steam sale but will pick up FOG Empires when it becomes available.

Waited till the absolute last minute and picked up:

Aggressors: Ancient Rome. Third time's the charm. I hope. Previous attempts ran into technical issues. Hoping it works this time.

GTA V: Already put in for a refund. In spite of 100+ FPS the game stuttered and lagged horribly. This was a second try for this game, and between the two attempts I used up my 2 hour refund window trying to get it to run properly.

Ultimate General: Civil War. I wasn't sure about this one even after watching several videos on it, but grabbed it anyway and played the first scenario tonight and liked it well enough. Vaguely reminiscent of Sid's Gburg.

Looked hard at War in the West, TOAW 4, the Command Ops dlc and Deep Rock Galactic but decided to save the rest of my Steam $$ for FOG: Empires.
