^'Dinant'

I've spent more than a few hours trying to either take key control points in that city or defend them back in my active WW2OL days. Amongst them were some hours-long epic slugfests, there were...  :)

Map looks a bit different than I remember, though. New names.

http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/books/2014/01/the-allure-of-the-map.html

QuoteFor years, I carried the same map wherever I went. When I wasn't travelling, Scotch Tape held it to the back of my bedroom door: it was visible to me when the door was closed, but invisible to almost everyone else. That map moved from dorm rooms to apartments and houses, from the Eastern Shore of Maryland to New England, from New England to the United Kingdom, and back again.

When I felt homesick, I would drag my fingers up and down the map's paper folds, tracing its shorelines and rivers, wishing they were the real thing. But touching that map only made me more homesick.

That particular one wasn't labeled - it was "Europe According to Homosexuals." One person's inside knowledge, I suppose. (Ba-dum-tishhhhh.)

The last one is "Europe According to Poland," but I think you guys got that part.

The 'Europe According To...' maps are quite funny.

This is cool - a fish could actually swim from the Pacific to the Atlantic.  I might need to make a road trip to Wyoming to see the Two Ocean Pass

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic4.businessinsider.com%2Fimage%2F5357cc346bb3f74a69e151c9-800-%2Ftwo%2520ocean%2520pass.png&hash=f7eed3f0ad53a01d682bc7bb8a74bd1fab3488f0)

QuoteReddit user wheatley_cereal has posted a factoid that we have no doubt is widely known among Mountain West residents, but of which the rest of the country is almost certainly unaware: It's possible for a fish to swim directly from the Pacific to the Atlantic without having to dodge Panamax ships in the canal zone.

The area is commonly called Parting Of The Waters.

There's even a point marking the divide, called Two Ocean Pass, located in Wyoming. At this pass the Atlantic Creek (which flows northeast to meet the Yellowstone river) with the Pacific Creek (which flows southwest to join the Snake River). The point actually sits directly atop the Continental Divide, where a raindrop has a 50-50 chance of flowing out to the Pacific or down to the Gulf.

It's a bit tricky to follow the full route on Google Maps, but it goes something like this:

Columbia River (Wa.) → Snake River (Ore.) → Teton streams (Wyo.) → Yellowstone Lake (Wyo.) → Yellowstone River (Wyo.) → Missouri River (MT) → Mississippi River

more here, too: http://mmarkmiller.wordpress.com/2012/03/15/two-ocean-pass-and-the-mystery-of-the-fishless-waters/

Title: Re: Maps!
Post by: GDS_Starfury on May 13, 2014, 08:55:27 PM
hillbillys are most usually broke with none of the fun toys rednecks get to play with.
like air boats, muscle cars, jet skis, kevlar fishin' rods... stuff like that.
meanwhile rednecks are more often then not blue collar contractors making a fair bit of money on snob ass doctors and lawyers who couldnt change a light bulb yet perform heart surgery.  this lets them afford the air boats, muscle cars, jet skis, and kevlar fishin' rods.
a hillbilly can also fall into a specific geographic twang and inflection that can even make other hillbillys ask "watduryadinsadhuh"
Title: Re: Maps!
Post by: BanzaiCat on May 13, 2014, 08:56:42 PM
Rednecks are crude Southerners that are often prone to violence (usually backfiring on themselves), have a deep love for NASCAR, certain country music, and drinking metric asstons of beer. They are often found in their native habitat of trailer parks. They are sometimes mistaken for white trash, but that is an entirely different classification. Rednecks usually have jobs in order to pay for their WWE pay-per-view events, often of the blue collar variety. Rednecks are often perceived as racists, although they tend to have more of a 'leave me alone and I'll leave yawl lone.'

Hillbillies are mountain folk. They are not rednecks. They dont live in the swamps or the bayous or the southern lowlands; again, this is a different classification of Southerner. Hillbillies come from the 'hollers,' or the hills. They can be a bit rough around the edges. Unlike rednecks, hillbillies are usually good-natured, honest, friendly, fun loving, and generally good people. They end to be very forthright and individualistic, mostly due to their Scotch-Irish heritage. They tend to lack education, but make up for it with their charming folksy ways. Often in the moonshine or poaching business. A small subsect enjoys cannibalism also.

Kansas is flatter than a vegan woman's chesticles. Therefore, there are no hills for hillbillies to roam around in to cut up tourists into meatsauce pies.

Rednecks, on the other hand, abound, except for in Lawrence and Kansas City, where a semblance of civilization exists, as long as you do not explore a street that has a number in the hundreds.

East Texas (Henderson, Longview, Marshall, Nagodoches, down toward Jasper) is pretty much indistinguishable from Louisiana north of deep Cajun country.  Most of those folks consider a drive into Shreveport of Texarkana "going to the city".  My maternal grandfather's family was all over that area, tho many of them have gravitated to the Metroplex over the past 40 years or so.  There's definitely some redneck in that area, but it's not stereotypical west Texas cattle-and-tumbleweeds-and-oil hicks.

People would rather go to Marfa than Houston.

At least, I would. The longer I live here the more I don't like it, and it's been 21 years! Can't beat the job market, but mine is pretty flexible, so when my wife retires in a few years...who knows, but we can likely move anywhere we want.

Texas is a mash-up of many distinct cultures. Along the Rio Grande you pretty much have Mexico (take your pick as to which side of the border). Dallas tries hard to be urban and metrosexual, but the only thing it truly succeeds at is traffic congestion. Houston likes to think it's progressive and happening, with it's "first ever lesbian mayor," which the media loves to bring up every chance it gets (the lesbian mayor that is fighting hard to give "transgendered people" (:2funny: I can't type that with a straight face, color me intolerant if you must) the right to use whatever bathroom they want, no matter their plumbing...because you know, there's not more important things to spend your time on here). East Texas is pretty much as Brant says. West Texas is super-hick meshed with super-oil. South Texas (north of Rio Mexico) is pretty much redneck cowboy cattle country.

Lubbock and Amarillo are pretty much Twilight Zone episodes in the middle of nowhere, but at least Lubbock has Texas Tech while Amarillo has...uhh...has...the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame, I guess.

Except the 80mph-passing bit. Usually it's idiots in the passing lane doing 55-60 with nothing in front of them, cars backed up behind them, and traffic passing them on the right, and they still don't have a clue that they're frigging idiots. (Happened to me yet again this afternoon.)

Southern Brazil has a higher netizen density than Russland. Given all the Russian hacker talk I was not expecting that.

Also, leaving my iMac on the GH forums all night must have helped make the US eastern seaboard just a wee bit brighter, mustn't it?

Nope.  The only good bit is right at the very end when they tie it in to the original.  The rest is utterly formulaic empowered woman (tm) vs CGI monster crap.

Not buyin it. The ash would be far more distorted to the east for 2 reasons:
-the jet stream
-the historical pattern. The last big one has been studied. It was dug up in about a 45 degree oblong to the SE.

Depends- if it erupted during an election year the huge mass of hot air coming from Washington would likely cancel out some of the Jet Stream's effect.

The current outbreak is by far the deadliest Ebola outbreak to date.

http://www.cdc.gov/vhf/ebola/outbreaks/history/chronology.html

As far as I can tell there's more reported cases of Ebola this year than in 1976-2013 combined. There was only about 54 cases in the last four years, total.

Oh...duh, maps:

I think the Final Solution to the Jaguar question will come soon enough. When they move to LA or Canada their fan footprint will decrease.

Modern Dutch probably seems closer to French because of all the loan words. Most of those probably date back only to the latter 18th and early 19th century.

I wonder what that means? My guess is that agricultural efficiency has improved. Smaller, isolated farms disappeared and were replaced with forest, while intensive agriculture became much more productive.

It might be.  if it goes down from 150 to 100 in SC, but from 200 to 40 in TX, then relative to each other, their colors will change, but the numbers are going down across the board.

This map isn't anchored to a hard value, it's comparing them to each other.

Hell no.

Regardless of the oil-drilling, it remains one of the most god-forsaken places on earth.  North Dakota makes Florida (even with crazy ex's, elderly people who can't drive, and hordes of Canadistanians) a very Paradise in comparison.

The only reason I ever venture into that misbegotten state -- and that's just across the border into Fargo -- is to visit my brother and his family (who are delusional and have convinced themselves they actually like it there ::) ).

Secret Soviet Maps.

The Soviets mapped the West to a stunning degree.

QuoteGiven the technology of the time, the Soviet maps are incredibly accurate. Even today, the US State Department uses them (among other sources) to place international boundary lines on official government maps.

John Davies, a retired British software developer, has been studying the Soviet maps for a decade.

Guy's company, Omnimap, was one of the first to import Soviet military maps to the West. But he wasn't alone. Like the military officials charged with guarding the maps, map dealers around the world saw an opportunity. Maps that were once so secret that an officer who lost one could be sent to prison (or worse) were bought by the ton and resold for a profit to governments, telecommunications companies, and others.

"I'm guessing we bought a million sheets," Guy says. "Maybe more."

It's only 12 hours from Houston to El Paso. From SA to El Paso it's about 9 hours. And that's with an 85 MPH speed limit between Kerrville and El Paso for most of the way.

I guess I wouldn't call it a full day's drive because we've done it so many times, driving from Houston to Phoenix, which is about 20-22 hours or so, depending, and we've always just driven straight through. What's sad is more than half that trip is just in Texas.

You are right...there's fuck-all out there but truck stops, Texas Highway Patrol, and slow eighteen-wheelers.

From my little bit of small-town coastal Connecticut, New York is either 2 hours or 2000 light-years away, depending on how you look at it.

My biggest gripe is the restrictive gun laws, making me hesitate to buy anything right now and worry about the future. The only gun I personally own is a bolt action 22lr and has been kept at my parents' place for 30 years but I eventually stand to inherit two full size antique hammer shotguns, a third of unusual length, a flintlock blunderbus, an eight and 3/4 inch 44 Magnum revolver (yes 'that' kind) and a semiautomatic shotgun that was built by my grandfather in his machine shop in the Netherlands roughly 70 years ago from plans he obtained of a Browning design.

Well, in NC...  KKK and Tobacco need to trade places
NASCAR, Christmas Trees, Krispy Kreme, and Moonshine all need to move west toward the mountains.  (Seriously, moonshine on the coast?)
Weed is in the right place.
Need a "Jimmy Buffett fans" spot along the southeast coast somewhere near where "moonshine" is now
And need "Nerds" and/or "Yankee immigrants/interlopers" about where "Christmas Trees" is right now
Finally, need to add "craft beers" underneath the "C" in "Country" - about where Asheville is right now (tho honestly, you could put "weed" there, too)

Out in California, "Starbucks" and "Wineyard" are both right in the middle of the Salinas River Valley, which is where most of the US's broccoli, tomatoes, garlic, onions, and lettuce come from.
"Vegan Pub" is right on top of Travis AFB.

Having lived for some time in the territory of the so-called "Republic of Lakotah" I can tell you no such state exists. It's a fiction courtesy of some Lakota activists. The Sioux tribal bands themselves certainly don't act like it exists. A "nation" that depends almost entirely on the US Bureau of Indian Affairs for food, housing, and nearly everything else necessary for life isn't a nation by any measure.

What the author seems to have missed is that the Lakota essentially are exactly that, however: sovereign nations. The tribal bands are technically autonomous (dependent) governments and the reservations sovereign tribal territory. This has legal standing with the US Government, where the Republic of Lakotah doesn't.

I suspect a number of these other places are similar.

There seems to be no rhyme or reason to them.  Some are indeed existing capitals, some are the new state's most centrally-located (or only) large city/metro area, and others (such as "Fireland's" capital of Elyria, which is in between Cleveland & Toledo) seems to be rather random.  ???

A lot of those locations were NATO equipment / ammo stockpiles.

Interestingly enough, they missed most of the nuclear weapons storage sites from the old 59th Ordnance Brigade.

They did manage to get virtually all the major airbases, though.

A new digital map offers an impressive rendering of the Mars landscape.

Using NASA open data, Ordnance Survey, the U.K.'s national mapping agency, has surveyed part of the red planet's surface to create a one-off paper and digital map. The 2,282-by-1,691-mile Mars map, produced at a scale of 1 to 4 million, is part of an OS effort to assess potential use of its mapping expertise for future Mars missions.

3 thoughts -
1.  "Fresno" shouldn't be extending to the coast.  LA/SF should be snaking down the coast, on the west side of the coastal range mountains to cover that gap.
2.  Same thing on the East Coast, where Myrtle Beach is currently absorbed in "Charlotte" when it really belongs with Savannah-Charleston along the Grand Strand
3.  Southwest Oklahoma gets roped into OKC, while the Dallas extends to the state line.  This splits Lawton OK and Wichita Falls TX, which are kind of a twin-orbit community there.

Velociraptor fossils.

Actually they pre-date Jurassic Park by about 70+ million years (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Velociraptor) ;)

That's what I was thinking so a little Chrome reverse-image google-fu found this:

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Frodinia.com.br%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2017%2F06%2FImp%25C3%25A9rio-Romano_mapa-metr%25C3%25B4-2.jpg&hash=42276a8bc45fbcab4acd7fa2b1bed8c9ae7041e1)

Still can't blow it up to poster size but maybe large picture-frame size? Too bad it's a jpeg.

Beer taxes in Ontario, where I am, are something like 300% higher than in NY State, which is an hours drive from my house.

The Portolan map of Dulcert AD 1339

Sailors from Genoa and other Mediaeval naval trading cities had pretty good maps.

Here is one from AD 1339, the dots are my plots of identified places, for which I have both geographical coordinates and the coordinates on the map.

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fspringelkamp.nl%2Fusr%2Fimg%2FGeschiedenis%2FPortolaan%2FPortolanWhole.jpg&hash=d104276b7138e28f9e1fb04fb8ba8a7c2362d90e)

and here is a high resolution scan of the parchment that contains the map.

http://springelkamp.nl/usr/img/Geschiedenis/Kaarten/AngelinoDulcert1339.jpg (http://springelkamp.nl/usr/img/Geschiedenis/Kaarten/AngelinoDulcert1339.jpg)

I have studied the mapping methods and the accuracy of the map. The results are presented here:

http://springelkamp.nl/?Categorie=Portolaan (http://springelkamp.nl/?Categorie=Portolaan)

The most interesting part is in Dutch, but I can translate it here if anybody is interested.

I discovered the Military Map App (at https://www.map.army/example/en.html (https://www.map.army/example/en.html)) today.

From the developer, gs-soft AG of Switzerland:

"The modern and platform-independent web application to visualize and plan military exercises and missions. Draw, save, export and exchange military map overlays or common operational pictures (COP) in map.army. To test the latest version navigate to www.map.army."
