Unsinkable Sam (also known as Oskar or Oscar) is the nickname of a real cat, reportedly in service as a ship's cat during World War II both in the Kriegsmarine and the Royal Navy, surviving the sinking of three ships: KMS Bismarck, HMS Cossack, and HMS Ark Royal.

I've heard of him. He was the Bismarck's ship's cat but was rescued by RN sailors and adopted. At first he was thought of as good luck but by the time he survived his second or third sinking the sailors' perspective had changed to that of thinking him bad luck since his ships all sank, even the ones which had rescued him but passed him on to others. After the Ark Royal sank Sam the Cat was beached for good.
