We're going to consolidate all of GrogCast season 2's discussion into one big-ass thread here.

Assuming you had no beard when you nodded off, how long are your whiskers now? Factor for approx 1/2 inch per month average.
Too much math.
Wil Wheaton's a dick.
It is what it is. Though I would have been far more impressed if I got even a short email telling me thanks but no thanks in the polite manner I'd expect him to communicate, rather than totally being ignored. Oh well.

Losing a finger was a small price to pay to escape from the ex.

Message: Gunny...I am one of two hosts for a wargaming/gaming/current events podcast called The GrogCast. This is an offshoot of the GrogHeads website where gamers of all stripes go to discuss all things gaming-, history-, and military-related. The site is GrogHeads (www.grogheads.com). I'm wanting to expand the podcast a bit and add voiceovers to our segues, to introduce each section in the podcast. I/we were wondering if this is something you do. We wouldn't need much...something along the lines of "What did you play this week, maggot?" and "Time to drop and give me five" (this being a top five pick kind of thing), and a few others that I have in mind. Perhaps four to six short lines total. If you don't do this kind of thing, no worries. Thank you for your time, Gunny - much appreciated in either case.

Great show this week! I really enjoyed the observations about kids watching gameplay on YouTube. Back in my day (here we go :idiot2:), we'd hang out at "the shop" and watch people play war games. This was back in the 70's mind you.
Really dug this one. I've already gotten the nieces and nephew hooked on gaming, so my work is done.
Aw the kids were great this week !! :)

I of course, being sick and not fully functional, said MY maps when I should have said map art. One add'l note, while we're picking on Cap'n D... Around the 3:40-minute mark he mentions me "waffling" about the term "modern" combat. ::)

Some are less "modern" than others.
Bawb and Windy, for example, are both "post-Precambrian." ;D
What exactly is modern warfare then Brant? I haven't listened the podcast yet, but I will.
If modern is simply a timeframe construct, then "modern" warfare is almost exclusively asymmetrical in nature. Since a true force on force conflict is not the norm of conflicts post 1991 and the fall of the Soviet Union well really since Korea. Vietnam is another discussion all together. And of course asymmetrical warfare itself is not limited by any stretch of the imagination to the post-cold war conflict timeframe.
I'm going to need your research complete and posted by the end of the week. Clear? :)

You might need to revisit some of your organizational breakdown. There's change afoot. And I think that a counterpoint to your arguement that yes while technology has changed over the years the cold-war is being recast with additional new regional alignments. So the large scale force on force wargaming of the cold war is returning and with a more multi-front scenario focus and not limited to the Fulda Gap scenario of a NATO and Warsaw Pact conflict.
My key point was that if you want to fight a true "modern" hot conflict, you don't just pull out Assault, blow the dust off the box, and call it "good enough" just because there were 4 M1s in a tank platoon then, and there are 4 M1s in a tank platoon now. There are so many other changes / differences between then and now that it's borderline silly to do so. It was 30 years ago. Shit's changed a LOT since then.

Hi. I'm new here having accidentally stumbling upon your podcast. And I'm glad I found it. Great cast. I am really interested in Flashpoint Campaigns: Red Storm, which I have. But I have yet to finish the tutorial. So I am a newbie not only to this game but to wargaming in general

Welcome aboard Dan.
Hey there! I expect someone from OTS will be along shortly to answer for you :)
Welcome Dan!
I'll let Capn Darwin get into specifics, but as far as I know, all the existing maps in the current version of FPC:RS are the maps reworked by William.
A place to start understanding a bit more about how the game AI works might be to take a look at this article (http://grogheads.com/?p=6377) I wrote last year using FPC:RS to illustrate the very same planning process Rob was discussing in the podcast.
If you check the Computer Wargames forum here, you'll find a very long and detailed thread (http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=12316.0) concerning Flashpoint Campaigns, as well.
Thanks guys!
Let me know if you'd like to try a Flashpoint Campaigns game PBEM sometime and go over some of the basics.
In addition to Jim and Rob from OTS, Steve Overton, who did pretty much all of the scenarios for the game also hangs out here and can give you a lot of great pointers.
@panzerde That'd be great. Thanks. How could that 'going over the basics' be done via the PBEM system? Doesn't the game just play out the opponent's turn?

Mark Walker crashes the GrogCast!
http://grogheads.com/?podcast=grogcast-season-2-episode-8
Hi folks,
thx for another great episode! I must admit that the first episodes at the beginning of the year were wonky by any standards :) but you are getting it all right now, especially Season 2!
The insight from Mark was refreshing! I always like hearing about people's own experiences from their field of work. Way to go forward like that!
Just wanted to add a bit more salt to the Onus! injury - I was one of the vocal folks pointing at the similarities with Battleground: Fantasy Warfare (on Boardgamegeek in my case). For me it would totally suffice if the creators would admit they were inspired by BFW and decided to take it for a spin. Then I would have no objections and would happily wish them all the luck in the world! Even in the case they would totally rework the rules and only the cards stayed.
But they just said "they knew about the existence of BFW". That is simply not true in my book, as when you look at the design of their cards and the design of the BFW cards, you do not only see similar style of top-down art (which, admittedly, in Onus! is better), but more importantly, the stats themselves are identical, even to the slashed numbers and icons. I cannot imagine a game in development, that presents itself as "new", using the same stats and numbers than an older game without the creators knowing about this.
I hate it when people do not give credit to the ideas and games that inspired them, especially when the new game is clearly a "copy" of an older one, even if the rules are tweaked and heading in a different direction.
Another good episode.

mirth me boy-o, one question...how drunk were you? ;)
Drunk mirth? I've gotta move this up on the to-do list.
It's the only explanation I can come up with after he carried me and B_C through this episode.
Hearing about you guys and your attempts to learn Squad Leader in your younger years reminded me of a horrifying piece of my own gaming history.
A buddy and I had been playing stuff like Axis & Allies and Hunt For Red October and Red Storm Rising. We were both WW2 history buffs. So we figured we were ready for the big leagues. Pacific War (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/5622/pacific-war) by Victory Games was our big leagues. We weren't ready. Frankly, I will never be ready for a game at that scale. It was awful.
Brant visits HonorCon in a GrogCast special :)
Wow! That took me back...I have read a bunch of those Harrington books and really enjoyed the first 4-5 books or so. I keep hearing rumors of a movie deal but so far nothing tangible seems to have happened.
I must admit though that I have kinda given up on the series.
