Wow, yeah, longer than usual, isn't it? I'm usually in a rush to stack this with my loyalty discount after Christmas before the winter sale runs out.  8)

As for what I may get this year.... hm, we'll see.

Been awhile but heres the little I remember. The tactical  battles were fun, the AI wasn't terrible for the tac battles. Different goals for winning for different countries, which was good.

The stuff that wasn't so good.
Not much to build to flesh out your territories. Small countries aren't much fun, a lot of end turn as you build. Not much diplomacy options.

The part I had the most fun with was the land tac battles, variety of units. If it interested you enough to spend the time playing, you'd get your money's worth at that price.

I got the email this morning.

Hmmm...and with my new PC to play with.

I'll be going through the "wish lists" quite a bit on this one.

Thanks Budd.  Since I have (unplayed) Fantasy General I think I'll play FG first.

I really wanted to like this one, but I found the tactical AI was quite poor.  It would frequently not move at all even when it had me completely outclassed and I could mop it up a unit at a time.  It really sucked the fun out of it for me.

So, at 20 dollah WiF's hardcopy package still isn't worth it? Wow. Is the game still not fuctional after all this time? Is it like its just a 20 dollar VASSAL module with hardcopy manuals?
What about the manuals? Aren't they worth 20 on their own? Any background info in them or are they just of the 'this button does that' type?

As usual, I already have pretty much all the Matrix/Slitherine games I care to own.  Thanks to my anniversary coupon I used earlier this year, I'm pretty well set.

That being said, both Civil War II and WitP:AE are tempting at those sale prices...  :dreamer:

My take on the game is similar to budd's

Pros: Decent battles, a good variety of playable nations, with nation-specific victory goals (it's definitely not always about painting the map in your colors).  I also really like the art style (I find it helps with the immersion factor), although that's obviously subjective.

Cons:  The strategic side is lacking somewhat.  Diplomacy feels a bit underwhelming/not fully fleshed out, and development/infrastructure options for your provinces are fairly limited and/or possibly too abstract (depending on your tastes -- I could see some people liking it).

Still, I would recommend picking it up.  For only $6.25, I think you'll get your money's worth.

I picked WitP:AE and Piercing Fortress Europa. I plan on retiring in 31 months so that gives me time to tinker with it before tackling the entire Pacific War. I also have an interest in the Italian campaign so Piercing Fortress Europa for less than $10 made me buy it.

It comes down to your ability and fortitude to keep things organized. The game's UI makes this very hard so you'll need to make your own plan or use something like WitP Tracker.
Still, its indeed a considerable effort to keep track on what's where. :)

I'm with you with respect to not having the same concentration levels as well.  Getting old stinks!  But my passion and desire to play monster games like this is still strong so I might pick up the Admirals Edition and stash it until I retire as well.   ;)

WITP:AE, daily turns, that's not a game, that's a lifestyle choice.....to much game for me, i yield. I did look at WIF, the map pack, i like a good map but don't know where i could hang it, 9ft tall :o

I'm looking at Guns of August, people swear by Frank Hunters games, also Piercing Fortress Europa but the Italian theater isn't my favorite. might fill out my FOG2 DLC, and pick up Sanctus Reach for some fun pbem. Sanctus Reach looks like it plays a bit like BA and BA2 and FOG2 which are all a lot of fun pbem.

What about OOB? I bought one DLC to test out pbem, and the pbem is more fun than Panzer Corps but the DLC's don't seem to add a lot to MP and the product descriptions don't really say what the DLC's add to MP. Anyone know?? i have no interest in the SP game in OOB.

WitP:AE  you nailed it budd. I never got beyond January 1942, and that was after many, many hours of play. The UI is nothing short of tedious.

Guns of August: I saw an AAR on Facebook recently and the player, and then other posters, praised the game.  The reviews I saw online were very critical.  I've been eying this one for a long time. Just not sure.

So far I've picked up 3 older titles I would normally no longer get:
       Battles in Normandy (SSG)
Steel Panthers World at War, Generals Edition
       Hornet Leader
And, as is usual, I'll probably hardly look at any of them. I think we move on much too quickly these days. too many games, not enough time.
It's just like having A.D.D.

Guns of August is a good design.  I enjoyed it, and thought it was worth the time.  WitP:AE is good, albeit you do have to invest A LOT of time in the game.

No issues from me on the heavy discounts. Buy now or wait for a sale, or wait for a better sale, the age old dilemma. I remember when they started these Matrix sales when most things were at 30% off, with a few things 50%. They took some criticism for it not being much of a sale, while steam and other outlets were going with bigger discounts.
I say rejoice and buy some more games you don't need or have time to play, happy holidays everyone.

It has been Ostfront for a long time, combining the two prior games into one.

I keep meaning to play it someday, as with all things.  :hide: Having a dynamic campaign generator for your group is a big plus compared to CMx1 (or x2) -- something that could only be sort-of haxored in CMx1 (Barbarossa and/or Afrika Korps) by the classic RobO campaign generator excel spreadsheet thing. On the other hand, the inability for infantry to enter buildings always dampens my enthusiasm to try it. (Not that this has slowed down the Graviteam guys...!)

Panzer Command: Ostfront (https://www.matrixgames.com/game/panzer-command-ostfront)

Panzer Command: Ostfront will replace both Panzer Command: Winterstorm and Panzer Command: Kharkov and will include all the content from the previous two releases as well as new content.  Registered owners of Panzer Command: Kharkov will have access to a massive FREE update that will bring their installations up to the Ostfront level in all respect.

My actual inquiry is whether there is anything going on with Panzer Command as a game series, aka whether Ostfront is still a thing of development at this time.

I guess COMMAND doesn't have a black friday sale.  Bummer.

WITP:AE, daily turns, that's not a game, that's a lifestyle choice.....to much game for me, i yield.

WitP:AE  you nailed it budd. I never got beyond January 1942, and that was after many, many hours of play. The UI is nothing short of tedious.

True, the WitP AE interface is almost a medieval torture device, and it does take forever to play.

However, it is the only game I have ever played, that truly portrays the Pacific War as a logistics war. Play 60 turns of WitP AE and you will pretty quickly understand why the US couldn't intervene to save Bataan. You can also see why Hawaii, and the US West Coast were very safe from Japanese invasion (Australia on the other hand is another matter). You can see why the US could not have launched a direct attack on Japan, until after 43 or so. The most important ships in the game are cargo ships and tankers.

I have never finished a game, but I love the fact that I learned so much from it.

Couldn't agree more AT...it's an awesome simulation seriously hampered by a, as you put it, 'medieval torture device' of a UI.

...and then my Matrix loyalty coupon shows up in the inbox!

Thinking "To End All Wars," or the new Strategic Command WW1 (sadly not for sale, but understandable as its a new release).

Thanks, Matrix!

Well I dont have much experience yet. But the attention to historical detail and tidbits is impressive. The interface is a mixed bag.
I like the art of the panels and buttons, but the listing and progress bars in certain menus are darn ugly lol.

So far in our MP game it looks like it plays much like a boardgame.
Good first impression at any rate.

And with all the nations and their quirks there is sooo much to discover!

For the sake of fairness I'll add a counterpoint here.  Now, I acknowledge fully that I seem to be the lone dissenter here (in fact I'm vaguely annoyed that the Grogheads led me astray this time).  But personally I think FoG:E is a terrible game.  First and foremost the UI is godawful, to the point where it seriously hampered my playing.  Information is never where I want it, the popup system is atrocious, and so on.  The diplomacy is laughably bare, which is a bit of an oversight in a game like this.  It has no soul and feels, I don't know, empty.  Battles are spectacular only in how underwhelming they are.  The implementation of multiplayer is beyond bad.

It might be worth $15 to you, but I was pissed off to get a game like this in 2019 and for £30.

....man, I looked around, and I'm just not feeling it this year. Even with my loyalty discount stacked on the winter sale. I love Matrix, but I've got a lot of stuff already, including a lot of recent stuff. Which, yay, I paid more or less full price for it, they've got more profit off me than otherwise!

Nor can I functionally combine my loyalty discount with the Groghead discount for the new WW1 game. Which would be okay, I could take whichever one worked best, except as much as I love WW1 games I don't really want this one at the moment.  :-\

I mis-remembered.

My actual inquiry is whether there is anything going on with Panzer Command as a game series, aka whether Ostfront is still a thing of development at this time.

I guess COMMAND doesn't have a black friday sale.  Bummer.

Couple of people are working in the back round on improvement and new stuff   https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4598475

always wondered my Matrix didn't support and improve this more going forward. With just CM and maybe Graviteam as the only games like it.

I may be misremembering, but I think the original independent dev company evaporated, dumping all the IP and leaving several overworked folks at Matrix and a few die hard modders to bring to life the final Ostfront incarnation.

All right, final Matrix tally for the year: got the new StratComWW1 game using the Grogheads discount  <:-)

Then with my combined 15 year anniversary plus winter sale punch:

Steel Panthers: World at War - Generals Edition
Brother Against Brother (I so badly want a remake update of Forge of Freedom, sigh)
Piercing Fortress Europa (never got around to this either)
Wars of Succession
Thirty Years' War
English Civil War (completing my Ageod trifecta for the period, at last)
The Operational Art of War IV
Battlestar Galactica Deadlock: Resurrection (i.e. the start of season two, i.e. Galactica herself is finally in the game  ::) )

Final tally, including tax, just over $50.  :bd: In other words, for the normal price of TOAW4 by itself.

Also caught up synching my Matrixslitherine games to Steam, where possible.

How difficult is War Plan Orange?

I'm quite interested in the alt-history potential of the game, but I'm concerned that it would take a ton of detailed study to master.

WPO is easier (relatively) than War in the Pacific (the engine it's based on) which is easier than the Admiral's edition.

I haven't touched it in years myself, but I seem to recall you may have the ability, as in WitP (before Admiral's edition), to sector off the portions of the theater that you want to play in and let the AI handle the rest.

Invicta hosted a lecture on WPO (not the game) back around Thanksgiving this year, by Pete Pelligrino, who designs war games for the US Naval War College. Essentially he explains why Nimitz could say his famous quote, that nothing in WW2 Pacific surprised him except the kamikazes.

I've been meaning to watch it since Thanksgiving! It runs about 45 minutes.

Here's a sort-of prequel (from a month earlier) about how the Naval War College plans and executes wargames.

I held off on WarPlan, when I saw the discount offered up to us.  Then, Christmas rolled around, and there's no discount at all on WarPlan (I don't blame them for a new game for sure).  I'd lost track of the timing on the discount, and realized that it expired on 11/30.

I'm wondering what the timing is of my Anniversary coupon, and I find out that IT expired on 11/29.  So, I had a chance to get WarPlan at something like 65% off, and instead I can only lay my hands on it for 0% off.

Guess I'll pay more attention to sale dates and coupons next year!   :'(

Ah well, Strategic Command WW II seems like a nice pickup...

Try American Civil War II.  It is very detailed.  If you haven't seen, I'm doing a noob AAR here: http://grogheads.com/   The one thing about it is that you in addtition to reading the manual, you have to dig into some youtube videos and forum postings to see a lot of the nuances that are going on "under the hood."

This is what's so confusing about these AGEOD games.  I've invested at least 20 hours into the game playing as Russia and I haven't seen any problems.  Seems like a good game to me but again I only have experience with Russia and about 20 hours of gameplay.
