Title: 2016 - 2017 Basketball Thread
Post by: airboy on November 16, 2016, 09:58:39 PM
Auburn's Men's team is much better than it has been in the last 10 years.  OK - that is not saying much but they may finish above 500 in the SEC.  OK - that is not saying much either.  But they seem WAY BETTER!

UNC is undefeated.
Dook has already lost.

So far the season is going well.

Auburn's Men are 4-0.  But the point guard had trouble making free throws.

Auburn's men played #17 Purdue in the finals of the Cancun Classic.  They were within 2 at halftime.

Then Auburn got blown out in the 2nd half.  Purdue has a good, 7'2 center and ended up shooting 65% from 3 point range.  The combination of a good inside threat plus great outside shooting will nail almost everyone's hide to the wall.

Still, Auburn is looking the best they have in more than a decade.  I'm looking forward to the rest of the season.  UNC is also playing very well, but I don't see them live or around campus.

Great game against Maryland last night, but the Cats couldn't close it out in the end.

Auburn's Men beat UAB on the road.  They are much better than the last six years at minimum.

Hey we take wins however we can get them out here on the plains!  On a side note, I think K-State is getting ready for another beat down from UConn in a few days  Last year was ugly, but at least we are at home this year.  So maybe, just maybe, it'll be a closer game.

Auburn is 10-2 going into Conference play tonight vs. Georgia.  They are clearly better than last year (only 11 wins last year), but it is unknown how good they are.  They had a 6'11" 5-star center join the team just after the end of final exams (he is an incoming Freshman who finished high school early and joined the team).

I'm surprised K-State hasn't received any votes.  They've payed very well so far this season.

K-state played a hell of a game in Kansas but couldn't pull it off.  The final basket should not have counted as the Kansas player clearly took three steps and travelled.  Blown call but state had a chance at the end and couldn't score.

Auburn's Women have been playing very well.  They beat Tennessee at home yesterday by 18.  They are 4-1 in Conference play with the only loss against #4 South Carolina.  They play Kentucky Sunday which is a key game in the conference.

I've been disappointed by Auburn's Men this season.  I had hopes, but they have not played good defense.  They also lost their #2 scorer and rebounder for several games on a foot injury.

K-State finally closed out a close game against a top ranked team by beating West Virginia.  They may yet be ranked by the time March Madness rolls around.

Auburn's Men BB team beat Alabama on the road.  Since the Iron Bowl trophy was being presented, it was a large partisan crowd.

State's season is pretty much foooked.

Beat Duke at Cameron for the first time in a generation.  Lose to BC, Miami (twice!), Wake Forest, and GT.

They'll be lucky to make the NIT this year.

I like it that the coach was going to have the guy run laps for missing a layup.

I know our coach is about to get shit-canned, but did Auburn forget to pack the defense against Florida?!

(Having said that, NC St is going to give up 357854235788 points to UNC tonight)

I went with a buddy to the SEC Women's Tournament in Greenville SC last week.  We did not go to the Wednesday games (I had to finish my taxes).

We went to all of the rest of the games (4 Thursday, 4 Friday, 2 Saturday, Finals on Sunday).

Excellent basketball.  Only one game was a blowout.  Very knowledgeable, partisan fans.  Auburn lost their game on Thursday at 11:00, so my buddy and I were just interested in good games.  Quite a few times one of us would comment that a call was blown, or that such-and-such player was screwing up and a partisan would agree (but be happy they got the blown call, agree someone on the other team was eating their lunch, or agree that their player was sucking).  One of the best partisan basketball crowds that I have ever seen.

I've been to a Mens SEC Tournament before.  For the Men's Tournament - Tons of Kentucky fans.  Many of them sneak in Bourbon or pregame and are drunk.  They are also mostly partisan idiots.  With apologies to MetalDog - Kentucky Mens Basketball Fans are the Basketball equal of Alabama Football fans.  But the other portion of Kentucky Fans come for every single game including the play in games on Wednesday and are very knowledgeable.   About a 50%-50% split.

For Women, there are a lot of Tennessee fans who come to every game.  Since SC won the title and the tourney was in Greenville, SC - tons of Game Chickens.  Fans were very knowledgeable all weekend.  Did not see a single drunk fan.

There were all of 6 Auburn fans at the Finals.  Most people leave after their team loses.  I went to see a bunch of good games.  My seats were awesome.  We were 4 rows behind the family section of the higher ranked teams bench.  That translates to row 9 between the top of the key and the center court jump circle.

In the SEC many of the pep bands are awesome.  It is a joy to hear them play.  The dance lines are always hot, and some of them are excellent (especially Georgia).

Here is what a dance line looks like.

And Auburn could not score again.  Forced 20+ turnovers and lose big.  Brandy Montgomery went dead cold the second half of the season.

On a brighter note, Katie Frerking is a Marketing Major who was the SEC academic player of the year and 1st Team Defensive player.  She was also the 2nd leading scorer and rebounder on the team.  We will miss her in the classroom and on the court.

The Cavaliers decided to actually make their shots tonight.

The think is, even with a record-setting first quarter, there's no one watching this game thinking "there's no way GS can come back."
