Planetary Annihilation is on sale 33% off. It comes to $40 and change now.  It is still in beta, but it has come a long way. It looks really good and there is a pretty competent AI commander available now. Might be a good time to jump in if you've been on the fence.  I haven't played a lot, but I plan to focus in on this one in the coming days, so stay tuned for impressions if you're still not quite ready to take the plunge.

i may be wrong but i get the impression its the clickiest of click fests ive seen - no strategy just scoop all you have and point, and then micromanage this across different planets - i hope im wrong

Well, you're describing the vast majority of RTS games. There is definitely strategy involved in creating balanced armies, managing resources, expansion vs. setting up base defenses and spreading to other planets and then using them as weapons...but in all fairness, I just haven't played enough yet to really judge how it all comes together presently.

Granted, I didn't enjoy it as much straight "out of the box" as I do now, and admittedly I do feel it was heavily flawed at release.  However, the devs have made great strides with the game since then.  In terms of bug-fixing, gameplay/AI improvements, and (mostly free) added content, I have to credit CA for providing solid support thus far; may they continue to do so.

OOTP14 uses a serial key from the developer, and I believe is limited to 2 simulatenous activations... If you need to move to a new machine, you have to de-activate a machine first.
