Title: Superbowl - I'm very stoked
Post by: JudgeDredd on January 31, 2015, 06:03:09 AM
I used to watch NFL a bit when it was on Channel 4 in the UK...but then Sky got the rights to broadcast it. I think Ch 4 did get limited rights back recently, but I haven't seen any of the games.

However, I found out my two fav teams are in the Bowl this year - New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks. They're my favs (along with the Denver Broncos) for no reasons other than I always thought if I was to live in the States, I'd choose the New England/Boston area and the Seahawks because I served a bit of time in the British Army in Seattle (Tacoma actually - Fort Lewis).

So - for the first time ever, I've booked Monday off work and I'll be sitting up and watching all 5 hours on Channel 4. It's on from 22:00 until 03:30 here - so Monday off work was a requirement.

I'm pretty stoked about it and if I had to choose one of them that I would prefer to handle the cup, it would be The Seahawks.

Anyone else watching it? Anyone else care for either of those teams?

Pretty much everyone here in the US is going to be watching it :)

Personally, I'm cheering for the Seahawks, not because I'm a Seahawks fan (I'm a fan of the Saints), but because there's a bunch of guys on the Seattle roster that went to my college and played for the football team there.

Patriots for me.  For a variety of personal reasons, one of which is, that they are NOT the Seahawks!  Thank God!!

Patriots. I have two favorite teams, the Texans and the Cowboys. After those two, it always comes down to personnel for me, and I'll root for or against a team because of their roster.

I love Tom Brady and would like to see him get his fourth ring. Gronk on the Pats is awesome, and Belichek belongs in any discussion of the best coach ever. Plus with all the Patriot haters, it's hard not to root for them, especially since they have been so good for so long. I appreciate excellence.

I also dig Russel Wilson, Marshawn Lynch and especially Richard Sherman on the Seahawks. Coach Carroll has assembled a historically great defense, so I'm not going to be devastated whichever way the game goes.

The best thing about this game? You can't argue that either team doesn't belong there. Underdogs are fun, but sometimes it's great to watch the two heavyweights slug it out. Hoping for a great game! Glad you are getting to see it.

I'm rooting for the Patriots.  Although I'm not sure if you've caught any of the controversy surrounding them after the championship game a few weeks ago Judge.  It's ludicrous and kind of took the wind out of my enthusiasm for this year's SuperBowl.

to be clear - I'm OK if the Pats win, as I think they've been an excellent organization for 15 years now.  But I'd rather see my guys from NC State win their 2d title :)

Long time Pats fan. After the last two losses to the Giants, some of my enthusiasm for the big game is gone. Would like to see Brady get another ring. I think this will be his last chance at it before he retires.

No - but looking it up now.

I also want to be clear either one of these could win and I'd be happy, but Seahawks is the one with an extra bit of rooting!

...he is from my neck of the woods, and a distant cousin of mine even played a few years next to him in the same German team: the Düsseldorf Panthers.

i will try to watch the super bowl, but usually i fall asleep against my will  :-[

I just noticed something watching the Channel 4 pre show....two of my most favourite comedy shows of all time are based in both places relating to these teams...Frasier (Seattle) and Cheers (New England). I watched both series (both having 11 seasons) last year and finished Cheers on the 29th December

Stupid extra long halftimes during the Super Bowl. Grrrrr.......

I have the sound off while I'm waiting for the game to come back on. I'm not a fan of the halftime shows, but this looks like the lamest halftime show ever....and that's saying a lot. And the budget for this lame a$$ intermission could probably feed half a dozen third world countries for a year. What a waste of time and money.

I don't know the intricacies of the game...but even I would've thought with 30 seconds to go and 1st and Goal (or was it second?...whatever) you keep the ball in hand until you HAVE to throw.

Shite end to a great game.

I could easily understand attempting a quick throw outside in such a 2nd down goal line situation... but a quick throw to the goal line right in the center of the field, with hordes of linebackers sitting right there in a goal line defense?!  Are you serious with that shit?!

Bad play call.  They were obviously hoping that the defending linebackers would instantly commit to a goal line leap by Lynch and immediately dive into the pile, completely ignoring any receiver coming into the center.  That's a crazy gamble for 2nd & Goal with 30 seconds left on the clock and the 'hawks paid the price for it.

Totally. The Pats were more than likely going to think Lynch would get the ball and run - especially doing so well all night...so why, WHY pass to the centre when there would be a whole plethora of bodies around.

I still think a run and keep the ball in hand would've been the safe call...pass when you have to. I am also aware that the opposition might think of that - when I used to play Madden I often played a pass to the receiver when a run would've been the sensible option, but that was a game. I am aware such a play may have worked (if the right receiver was selected and in the right position), but still...Lynch was outstanding and he should've been given that 2nd down for a try at goal.

Thing is Judge, in that situation you DON'T want a turnover.. Pass Plays have a higher chance of turnover.. What did they do, they passed.. They gave us the game!, Then the gave us the penalty after that to move the Pats out of the end zone!

Both teams played a heck of a game, you don't see many Super Bowls that close!

Yeah - I know. That's why I was saying the smart play would be to hold the ball...keep it in hand.

I'll translate it to rugby. I watched a game where Scotland were 2 points ahead of Wales with seconds on the clock. They got a penalty and took it quick. The obvious play was to keep the ball in hand and work it up the field (the timer doesn't stop at 80 minutes until the next time the ball goes dead) and then kick it out or run it out when the clock goes past 80 minutes...but the ball went to a player who decided to kick it up field. Wales got it and ran it...the play went to about 84 minutes and Wales had done enough to get close enough for a penalty and 3 points...Scotland lost by a point.

I basically saw the same thing last night. Keep the ball in hand in 1st/2nd and even 3rd and Goal. I see the option to lure the opponents into defending the line and giving your receivers a better than average chance of receiving...but it's still a risky play. As it was only 2nd and Goal, the smart play would have been to keep it in hand until 4th down...then with seconds left, you have nothing to lose and you can play that risky play.

I'm no coach and I'm no authority on the game - but I would definitely have played safe until I had to make that risky call. Everyday.

Definitely. But then, he could always give it to Wilson for throwing such a bad pass which was no more than 50/50...or even Pete Carroll who has officially accepted blame for the play.

There are so many Brady could have thanked  :P

The Mike & Mike hyperbole machine was already talking about "greatest Super Bowl ever"

I thought Rams-Titans was better, and 49ers-Bengals was pretty good, too.
Regardless, this one is certainly in the top 5.

Just being a close game isn't enough to be "good" because close + sloppy = lousy

this one was pretty well-played by everyone, and someone had to lose...

I'm always totally amazed by your game.

I mean, in Rugby (there's bound to be comparisons), there's 15 players with another half dozen subs. Those 15 players pretty much batter their way up the field and batter the opponents back. There's no "defensive" team, "offensive" team or "special" team...it's just THE TEAM

You guys on the other hand have a team for everything! How much actual game time does your quarterback play? What about any of your receivers or line backers? The game is an hour long but takes 3 to play! It's absolutely mental watching it.

I used to think they were pussies for wearing the pads - but when I actually started to watch it, I realised that these buggers are jumping in the air to catch the ball and have absolutely no idea how they're going to land...it's just..."lets see how this goes".

But my god...the money involved...the amount of players...the sizes of the franchises. I presume drugs are involved legally or otherwise...there's an awful lot of angry meat on that field. It's crazy mental.

I love it - it's a superb game - but it's mental.  :idiot2:

For a long time, players played offense and defense.  It was abot 50 years ago that it started to change and players focused only on one or the other.
In Arena football (smaller, faster, indoor version) players play both ways, except the QB and one defensive specialist.
Also, in Arena football, when you sub out, you're out for the half, so coaches are careful about their subs.

lol - I know. I can't get over it - I really can't.

Again - I know he was probably thinking the defence was going to expect him to run Lynch and so he probably thought he had a reasonable chance of getting a pass in - but still...2nd down - 2 more downs left - les than a yard to move the ball - Lynch has been superb - what exactly is there to think about?

All the Patriots said they knew it would be Lynch running so the pass was not necessarily a bad play to run then, you know do what they aren't expecting. It was that the pass was short and over the middle that made it such a bonehead move. Christ there were 12 people within 2 steps of the ball.  Throw it outside or to the back of the end zone where only your guy can catch it. Then run twice if necessary.

http://www.vox.com/2015/2/2/7961789/pete-carroll-play-call-defense

QuoteThis is the most persuasive defense of Pete Carroll's decision to throw that pass

An incomplete pass stops the game clock. An unsuccessful run does not. A timeout also stops the clock, and Seattle only had one timeout left. So if the Seahawks had run on second down and failed to get a touchdown, they would have had to call timeout.

Now, it's third down, and they have no timeouts left. So if they run on third and fail, the game is over. But if they pass on third and fail, the clock will stop, and they can run another play. So they basically have to pass on third, and the New England defense knows they have to pass.

By contrast, if you throw on second down and fail, the clock stops. Now it's third down, and you still have your time out. That means you could run on third, fail, and use the timeout to stop the clock and run another play on fourth down. That means New England has to defend against both the pass and the run, which puts Seattle in a more advantageous strategic position than they would be had they run and failed.

Obviously, this line of thinking didn't work out very well for the Seahawks. And there's a good case to be made that it involves overthinking the situation. You only need two yards, and you've got Lynch, so why not put it in his hands? But if you leave hindsight out of it, you can see the argument on the other side

Of course they "knew" Lynch would receive it...but I still think 2nd down and a yard to go that had to be the play. Mess with a pass on the 3rd or better still the 4th if you really want...but you had 4 downs. Come the 4th, if Lynch hadn't made the ground, the Pats wouldn't have known what play was coming - and probably suspected a pass as the previous two downs had resulted in no gain.

What I'm trying to say is - at that time that move made no sense. The Pats would have been just as thrown had the Hawks gotten to a 4th. At the 4th you can make all the risky plays you want...you have nothing to lose with seconds left on the clock.

That game was there for the Hawks at that point and that decision gifted it to the Pats.

Having said that - I do think overall the Pats outplayed the Hawks and the best team on the night won.

I've seen teams play 3/4 downs in seconds....they just need the coach to be on the ball. 30 seconds was plenty of time to give the ball to Lynch and if needed, take the time out. Then they could've primed the next two plays...they could've fitted them in.

I've seen plays happen in quick succession before when the clock is running out and the team have no timeouts. You just need to be "on the ball" and get your plays lined up. There's 30 seconds left and you've got a yard and 3 downs!

So I don't buy that...sorry ;D

I still think the pass call wasn't the problem. The problem was where the pass was thrown, short over the middle with a defense crowding the line to stop the run. The whole Pats defense was where the pass went. Throw it outside or high to the back of the end zone.

Oh, I agree that it was the area that was the problem. Every man woman and child that could be spared was in the centre area waiting on a run

I still would've given Lynch his bite. 3rd or 4th down would've been where I would've chanced the pass.

That is typically where the ball would be thrown in that situation. Back of the end zone or outside toward the sideline. Throwing it into the middle, into the teeth of the defense, was plain dumb.

Either that or fake to Lynch up the middle and have Wilson roll out to either run or pass. Your talking about a 6-8 second play at worst.

Clearly i'm still in shock......F**K,F**K,F**K.....if there's a worse way to lose i don't know what it is. there's a lot of blame to go around for sure. I don't have a problem with passing on second down after wasting a timeout there was only going to be one run whenever you did it, but a F**king slant to Lockette, the pass wasn't good either too high. We didn't play that well. 5 trips for new england into the red zone 4 TD's 1 pic......F*******************ck. We were pretty classless at the end, no way to lose. I don't think Bevell will be back, I never been that fond of his play calling, but hard to complain about it with the success the team has had. Marshawn is flat out killing Bevell on https://twitter.com/beastmodeml  , there is no way they will both be back.

We played poker during the Super Bowl starting a couple of hours before kickoff.

I sat in my designated seat (back to the TV).

I won, again.  I've never lost at Super Bowl poker.  People get a bit too distracted.  Like the dealer calling 5 card draw and nobody at the table remembering that I did not take any cards.  Then tons of raises before it came to me.  When I was holding an Ace high flush.

Gotta love the Super Bowl.

Oh, I agree that it was the area that was the problem. Every man woman and child that could be spared was in the centre area waiting on a run

I still would've given Lynch his bite. 3rd or 4th down would've been where I would've chanced the pass.

Either that or fake to Lynch up the middle and have Wilson roll out to either run or pass. Your talking about a 6-8 second play at worst.

That's exactly the play call that I was expecting.

Balls.  Great big brass Irish balls. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/early-lead/wp/2015/02/03/two-irish-guys-sneaked-into-the-super-bowl-without-tickets-and-snagged-25000-seats/)

While hundreds wallowed over their Super Bowl ticket deals falling through on Sunday, two NFL fans from Ireland say they managed to sneak into University of Phoenix stadium in Glendale, Ariz., and snag $25,000 seats for free.

"Our game plan was to be super confident," Richard Whelan, who attended with friend Paul McEvoy, told RTE Radio One Morning Ireland (via the Independent). "We just thought if we pretend we belong there, nobody will question us."

Apparently, no one did. The two said they took advantage of the hullabaloo at one gate at the stadium, where they saw crowds of first aid workers entering.
