Title: Holiday Sale Regrets
Post by: Rayfer on January 14, 2020, 03:15:48 PM
Now that the holiday sales are mostly over I see that I have two different regrets. Do you have either of these two?

1)Game I wanted to get but didn't.  I wanted to take advantage of the Tiller sale (a rare event) by getting  a Panzer Battles games, probably the newer one set in North Africa. I screwed up thinking their sale ran like the Matrix sale into January. When I went to make the purchase it was no longer on sale. A lost opportunity.

2) Game I got on sale but now wish I hadn't. Interstellar Space Genesis...after 7 hours of gameplay I realized this was just another iteration of many games I already have; i.e. Master of Orion, Stellaris, Stars in Shadow, Polaris Sector, Endless Space, etc.  It's a decently good 4X space game but nothing better than what I already have.

I did not experience option 1 above however I totally agree with you on option 2.  I did however get ISG a while ago, not during this past Steam sale, and really like the game.  It's fun but got bored of it quickly as I too have MOO, Stellaris, Stars in Shadow, Polaris Sector, Endless Space 1 and 2, and many more.  Space Empires IV and V.  I could go on and on.  Bottom line is that ISG is not really that different from what I already have.

Interesting remark about ISG. Wasn't that the whole sales pitch all along? Taking what's good in past games and make it a classic 4x game but with better, more fun, gameplay elements?
Do you conclude they failed and its just standard fare 4x?

I agree mostly, ISG is a good game but doesn't bring enough new things. The support however is great and they still have plenty of ideas (races, graphic updates etc.). I am also one of the space 4x nerds.

1) i have all the games i want for now. No regrets.

2) Not really a regret, but i bought by accident Unity of Command 2...it was on my wishlist but it's not the game i want to play right now. It took me also a while before i played the first one to the end.

No regerts here. My trick is to buy so much crap that I actually don't remember what I bought. If you can't remember what you got,  there can be no regerts. Easy peasy.

As evidenced by the number of times we have ALL gone to buy a game on Steam....only to discover we already own it  :uglystupid2:

This sounds like the beginnings of a metaphysical discussion: If you purchase something, but dont recall it, did you really purchase it?   :)

No real regrets here.  I'm content with the few purchases I made.

There were a few games I would've liked to have picked up, but still held off on anyway.  Something I've started doing the last several years is to force myself to honestly answer the question "How likely am I to actually play this game sometime in the next year?", and then compare/contrast to how much I'd be paying for it at the time.  If I end up admitting (if only to myself) that I probably won't play said game anytime soon, then I'll wait for a sale next year...at which point it will probably be even cheaper, and/or more fully patched/polished.

I'm impressed that you have played all of your Holiday Purchases.

Strike that: I'm amazed that you have played all of your purchases.

I have not played/read everything I bought in 2018 Holiday sales - much less 2019.

I dropped DCS' F-86 Sabre out of my holiday cart for reasons unknown. Needless to say, I urgently wanted it a week later.

Luckily they just found another lame reason for a sale, and it is back to 50% off. My precious...

By focusing on DLCs & just one/two new-to-me games, I walked away with no issues this past season.  Also, I'm of a similar mind to Martok in really questioning if I get a game, will I play it.

I a reverse to this post...I am really glad I didn't waste $20.00 on Matrix's World in Flames. In spite of the all the long running negative reviews, the game always intrigued me, so I thought what the heck, maybe I'll check it out.  But I didn't once I realized I would never actually play the game. Twenty dollars was saved and better spent on Pillars of Eternity 2.

Got mare nostrum on steam. Have not even loaded it yet. I should load up trireme commander though.
Wanted mare bostrum simply because it was a rare trireme game. But like so many wargames it is based more on a board game than an attempt to bring the genre to life.

At almost the last minute of the Chinese New Year sale I picked up Tannenburg.  I was inspired by a post from Gus where you can setup your own private matches with bots.

Tried the game for the first time last night and boy was it fun!  No regrets on this purchase.   :bd:

You're welcome! I'm looking forward to getting further into Tannenberg as well as Verdun now that I know I don't need other annoying humans to play.

If you ever feel the need for a limited MP game, let me know and it could be Gus and W8 against a whole German division - east or west.

Sounds good to me.  It would be nice to just play a relaxing match with a friend against bots.

Oh and now that I've got a taste of Tannenberg I am going to have to add Verdun to my wishlist.  I'm sure it will go on sale.

IIRC I got both for 9.99 each after I learned it was possible to play them virtually alone.

And the bots played pretty well too. That, along with me being an ultra mega newb at these games, led to a challenging but not impossible session.

Even got me some kills 😎

The opening is infuriating. I don't know how many times I "saved the game" only to realize it was not going to do a real save until after my first hunt.  :pullhair:

Yeah I will admit the story is mostly inane and the handler extremely annoying. That said they have given upgrades on starting armor and weapon of choice to allow you to fly through the low level stuff pretty easily.
I'm all for the less talky more stabby bits myself.

9.99 for both is a great deal.

Yeah if we team up and play together against the Huns on the eastern front I'll be happy to share my tips and tricks with you.  I'm no expert but I've played quite a few of these types of games and have learned a few basics that do apply to all games of this type.

Yeah that happens in a lot of games not just in this one.  The trick when that happens is to spawn somewhere that is not close to the action and try hugging the map edges as you creep towards the capture points.

If you're getting sniped no matter where you spawn then just wait until another player spawns then spawn immediately where he did.  Hopefully the sniper targets the other guy and not you.  LOL

Why would a developer allow this? Shouldn't a spawn area be free from any attack. Makes no sense. What am I missing here?

Spawn camping is an age old practice of FPS which quickly created the fabled "rage quit".

I think I am too old now for rage quit and just meh quit instead. But now that I've learned about bots it saved the game and my 9.99 for me. Mostly.

I saved my sanity by refusing to buy twitch FPS shooters anymore. Every now again they'll have a free weekend and that's just enough time to remind why I don't buy them anymore.
Title: Re: Holiday Sale Regrets

I used to rage quit very viciously in the past but now I embrace the spawn campers.  I know many may disagree but I believe that spawn camping is a valid tactic to defeat the enemy team.  The good players know how to counter spawn campers.  I've seen team mates kill the spawn campers brilliantly and even I have been able to pull it off 1 out of 10 times.

There are ways, depending on what game you're playing, of camping the spawn campers.  Usually when a spawn camper sees that he's been had he tends not to come back.  If he does come back it's free kills for the one who waits for such an obvious move.   ;)

Ok I have an example of killing a spawn killer.

Last night I was playing Heroes and Generals as the Soviets.  I had my light tank which was parked just outside of one of our spawn areas.  I was in a small clump of trees with excellent overwatch.  Out of the corner of my eye I saw a German motorcyclist race by my right side.  He planted to magnetic AT mines on the rear of my tank.  As I was bailing out he shot me.  In the kill cam I noticed that he then was proceeding to steal my damaged tank.

Well since he foolishly was close to our spawn point I respawned and crept up to the position where I died.  I saw him still in the motions of stealing my tank (it takes several seconds to unlock enemy tanks when you're stealing them) and machine gunned him.  I then stole his motorcycle and drove on to the closest objective and went on a wild rampage before a sniper ended me.  Great fun!

Older games would have had fixed, protected spawn-points, but most of the current generation of MP FPSs have player-deployable spawns.  This is a great way to promote squad-cohesion, but also means that the player can put them in untenable positions.
