What plane are you flying?  I'm thinking maybe a Nieuport because of the single nose mounted mg.  That 2 seater made you work hard for the kill.  I got startled a bit when I heard the zip of his rear mg firing at you.  Actually I was so immersed that I got scared.  That must have been a disconcerting sound to hear for a new pilot back then.

It was very hairy.  Especially when I got hit.  Did you see the red bits on the screen?  They're subtle but I was wounded most of the fight.  Just pissed me off more.  ^-^  The observers are all crack shots, even in novice crews.  I actually turned down the rear gunner accuracy in the game but I've not noticed a difference.  They'll hit your pilot if you fly straight anywhere near them!  :o

The bullet strikes definitely make me jump, but some of the oh-so-near collisions make me gasp.  I've not had many in my vids which were that close but there are times when I don't know how the hell I avoided a mid-air with someone and it's a real butt clencher.  At least with the bullets there is still a chance of survival if they strike my plane.

I play Dead-Is-Dead on my WOFF campaigns, of course.  That's what it defaults to in the settings IIRC.  Hopefully this guy can last past the first month with this squadron so I can get into a Camel.  I'm currently flying a Sopwith Pup.  Been lucky so far.  O:-)

Also... I was awarded a Military Cross and an instant Kill Confirmation when I brought that C.V down almost on top of our airfield.   I guess the CO didn't like those Huns taking a dump on his aerodrome.  :)  Also awarded a week recovering in the hospital.

Ruh Roh. you're making me 'want' this game!

^I know seriously.  I'm intrigued by the campaign.  Sounds like a lot of fun!

Ha....so you can be shot down!  Without the ID flags turned on how do tell who are the good guys and who are the bad guys to shoot at?

Do you have the first version of the game?  If not, just keep in mind you will have to buy the first version ($39) as well as the second version ($45), plus Combat Flight Simulator (cheap usually under $10, but still a cost).  If your a WW1 flight sim fan, then certainly would likely be worth it but if just casual, it does have a decent cost.  I could never play it well (not the game's fault) so I don't play the game much, so that is why I am holding off on the second version, but from what I saw of it, I loved the campaign and I thought it was overall better than ROF.

I didn't realize you had to buy both versions.. nevermind then.. lol. I did already get CFS III long ago in prep for getting this game, but I used to so pissed off about the 'high' shipping costs, at the time they didn't have a download version. I wasn't going to pay 9 bucks to ship a CD!

Nef, we're you firing the MG hoping that it would give you enough propulsion to make the landing a lil softer!?

Oh, I get it fairly regularly in multi-player.  If not from another player, then from flocks of AI planes in the Co-op servers or ground fire.  I have a couple more ROF vids from yesterday, one of which demonstrates how not to attack two-seaters and the other a low-level pounce over the trenches with enemy troops firing at me the whole time.

I have only been playing on a pair of Full Realism ROF servers.  So there are no labels or anything.  Had to get used to spotting stuff unaided, along with recognizing the gauges and levers in the cockpits.  Raises the tension a good deal when sneaking up on someone is easier due to the difficult spotting, and vice versa.  For the first couple times I tried it, I couldn't see a damn thing down below me with the ground as a backdrop but eventually got used to it, along with liberal use of the zoom commands mapped to my stick.  I also thought navigating by sight would also be difficult in ROF but it's not.

If you run that last vid at high-res on YouTube, you can see one of the planes I was heading to intercept in the distance when my view was zoomed in.  I think that one was probably a friendly but wasn't sure and there was a little gunplay a bit earlier with a couple others, so it was a good spot to bounce into.  >:D

I've left off the labels in single-player too, although the map indicators are still on for when I'm using time compression in auto-pilot.

Yeah, WOFF is very expensive.  Unless you're a crate-flying WWI nut like me then you may not get as much use out of it.  I just dig it for all the little historical details and quality of the dynamic campaign environment.  I think you would be better served getting a relatively inexpensive ROF package for more casual play.  It still has a 'dynamic' campaign, just not quite as good, and a free third party campaign generator that's a bit better.  Also.. multi-player which is usually what I prefer to do most these days now that I've got a little experience in it.

As for firing my machingeuns on the way down, I got a bit fixated on watching the overwing Lewis gun firing at the end.  It was the end for that pilot, so I wanted to go out with some bangs.   :))

I usually don't notice Archie fire in ROF unless I'm really low to the ground.  They're not very effective at all (as historically correct for that war) but they do get lucky sometimes.  It's the mix of machineguns and less travel time for the shells of the big ones down low that can ruin your day if you're not weaving and bobbing.  You can fly in a straight line up high (where I was that time) for ages and not get hit... unless you're me!   :knuppel2:

I was stalking about in ROF multi-player earlier..

Was that archie or a mid air collision?  You had him real good too.  He was smoking so it's obvious he took damage.

That SPAD was actually the second guy I had seriously damaged.  The first one I had met over the lines was an SE5a which I chased back over to his side until the dude in the SPAD showed up to assist his stricken buddy.   I shot up two enemy players but managed not to shoot either of them down.  ;D

It was Archie that killed me.  I was dogfighting low over one of their aerodromes at the end so it was only a matter of time.

I hear you.  That's my story in War Thunder.  I take about 10 minutes of filling up my opponent with lead and he keeps on flying then get the tables turned on me and die with a one shot pilot kill.   ;D

I have pumped a fair bit of crew experience into the pilot health stat in War Thunder.  I'm quite sure it has helped after getting past ~25.

You can still get pilot killed fairly easily in head-ons, but I get less deaths from other angles.  There for awhile, it seemed like people shooting cannons at you could score regular pilot kills with one hit no matter where it landed on your aircraft.  I think they improved it since then, however.  Always more damage modelling fixes to be done.
