...where Lady Gaga will probably reveal here A cups with hefty "Anti Donald "non-permanent tattoos, or something appropriate scandalizing   ^-^
(of course the post-nipple-gate established 5sec transmission delay to beep and censor it will prevent the live-broadcast on most networks but their are to much witnesses to keep that footage in the box and it will surface later ...together with POTUS reaction on Twitter O0)

So far, lame commercials and decent play by the Falcons. Patriots are facing a hard time manning up on defense

There is a team in the local soccer league here who's standard of performance is that after the game you should not be able to tell one way or another by the number of beers on the table whether they won and are celebrating or lost and are drowning their sorrows

I felt really sorry for the owner of the Falcons who left his sky booth at the end of the 3rd quarter to go down to field-side to get his Super Bowl trophy and then stood by on saw his team self-destruct. The poor guy's face kept getting longer and longer until his nose was in his back pocket. Somebody definitely better check those footballs Brady was using. What time are the riots in Boston tonight?  <:-)

I think that's correct for a Super Bowl.  The stat above was all games since 1991.

The other fun stat I saw was this:

Tom Brady completed 43 passes.
The Falcons ran 46 plays.

I remember Troy and Buck going on about how the Falcons had only run 33 plays at some point during the start of the 4th quarter.  I didn't really give it much thought other then the thought I had during the game..."the Falcons are going to win this without really being very good offensively outside of the 2nd quarter."
Title: Re: Super Bowl LI Running Thread
Post by: MetalDog on February 06, 2017, 08:05:32 PM
The Falcons offense/play calls, hung their defense out to dry.  The Atlanta D was stellar in the first half and played well for a chunk of the third quarter.  But they were gassed by the time Brady and the Pats got the comeback machine rolling.  And before anyone gets their nose out of joint, I am not taking anything away from how New England came back.  It's certainly not their fault that they had the opportunity to run 93 plays.  Taking advantage of that is what any one of us would do in that situation and congrats to the Patriots for doing it.  What I am saying is, it shouldn't be too hard to beat a defense that spent that much time on the field.

Post by: bayonetbrant on February 06, 2017, 08:16:03 PM
One of the reasons the defense was on the field that long is that New England made sure to run long clock-sucking drives to keep Matt Ryan on the sidelines.

New England had three sacks of Ryan.  All three were on Third Down.  On the second field goal drive (I think), the Falcons had three Defensive Holding/P.I. penalties that allowed New England to keep the drive alive.  All of them were on Third Down as well.  The Falcons gained an average of 6 yards a carry and yet only ran the ball 18 times.  Atalanta did their best to give this game away and New England did everything they should have to take advantage of it.  And congratulations to them for doing so.  It was an epic comeback.  I just would have liked to see a more equitable distribution of plays.  I think the outcome would have been very different.

That's like saying, if New England wouldn't have turned the ball over twice in the second quarter the score would have been different.

Maybe my English isn't as good as I think it is.  I'm not taking anything away from the Patriots.  I just would have liked to see Atlanta play better when they had the ball.

I agree with the fact that outside of a few drives Atlanta's vaunted offense was ineffective.

During the first half, sideline cameras repeatedly caught Belichick looking intense (wait, that's his only expression) and writing things down on a notepad, collaring players to give individual insights and instructions to, scheming with his coaches....I thought going into halftime that the Pats were in deep trouble given how seldom they have to play from behind, but the whole first half Belichick's gears were turning. I remember when Butler made that interception two Super Bowls ago against Seattle, Butler said repeatedly it was because they were coached to watch for that play. When you have that caliber of coaching, you always have a chance.

Brady had a fourth quarter for the ages, of course. The Falcons played Brady textbook for most of the game, putting pressure on him, hitting him....often that's enough to get Brady frustrated (especially with some of the dropped passes earlier in the game). But I never saw that in him this game.

Easily one of the best game's I think I've seen, especially the second half. Kudos to the Falcons, they're young and they will be battling the cream of the NFC next season for a return trip. But once again, the NFL belongs to the Pats. Helluva Super Bowl.

The Saints led the league in average number of offensive plays last year with ~69 per game. The Falcons averaged ~62. The Pats averaged ~66, they ran almost 50% more than they averaged for the year in the biggest game of the year. Simply amazing.
