Title: Age of Steam-Ireland
Post by: rstites25 on June 12, 2017, 08:48:06 PM
New thread for AoS Ireland.

Here is the initial setup.

I've scanned the rules into our dropbox folder.

I randomly determined starting order for shares and the initial auction and it is:

Rex-Mike-Woodall-l'amour

The first logfile is me going through the setup. The second logfile is just a save so that whomever needs to use it first doesn't have to step through everything.

How about we using Yucata instead of Boardgame Arena? You can't undo inadvertent plays in Boardgame Arena, but you can in Yucata (I think. I've just played some Pax Por there, and you can undo anything before you gain new information. I assume the Polis module would be the same).

I'd forgotten I took first build.  :-[

I passed because I was out of prestige and didn't look to be able to gain any any time soon...so I thought I'd at least make you pay resources. But I don't think it matters...I"m toast anyway.

I'll build something momentarily.

The Yucata interface isn't as pretty as Boardgamearena, but it's functionality is much better. If you want to give it another go Woodall, I'd be up for playing again.

I thought that might be the case, but I thought I'd throw it out there since the last game ended abruptly.

I really wanted to like it but there are some thing about it that really bother me. The bones are good though, it'd be nice if someone took some time for more development with that type of system. I also had many games going at once both online and face to face, so probably just kind of burned out on it. Mainly I'd just be thinking about Hannibal while playing it and wondering why I wasn't playing that instead.

The economic-game aspect combined with the military is interesting, but it combines them in a constrained, euro-esque way. As a result, the game is a lot of figuring out what to do when for maximum effectiveness. I don't like that sort of planning so it seems like the economic and military aspects that I am interested in are far off in the background.

Agreed. And I think there is too much punishment when taking risk. Closes the game more than necessary.

So, we're still on turn 1, right? The turn marker is confusing me. I'm just guessing we're in the 2nd half of Turn 1 because my income is 1 and not 2.

Edit: (I see now the Ireland rules have it start one to the right)
Title: Re: Age of Steam-Ireland
Post by: Woodall on July 06, 2017, 11:42:30 PM
Haha - just realized I'm going to go bankrupt. For some reason I was thinking I'd have to pay for my 1 issued share and 1 loco. Forgot that our initial cash comes from 2 standard share issuance prior to game start. Mike will bankrupt as well?

I must have no been paying any attention last game to the whole mechanics of this thing.
Title: Re: Age of Steam-Ireland
Post by: rstites25 on July 07, 2017, 08:46:15 AM
Close but not quite.

Right now you're at 1 income, 3 shares, 1 loco, and $0. If you deliver another good for $1, you'll get to $2 income, which will give you $2 cash. You'll have $4 in expenses, $2 of which will come from cash and $2 will come from income reduction. That will put you back to $0 income...but not bankrupt.

Mike will be able to deliver a good for 2. He has $2 cash already, will get $2 more, and then be able to pay his $4 in expenses from cash.

Do any of you guys use slack? There's been discussion in the BGG 18XX forums today about the benefits of using Slack to facilitate play of 18XX through Board18, etc. I'm wondering if that might be a better alternative for our games, given the sometimes inconsistent notifications for forum posts. From what I understand, it would facilitate notifications, file sharing, posting of images, etc. I've never used it, so don't know any more about than what's been posted in those threads.

I use slack for our local ASL group. Pretty slick interface and has a mobile app. No restrictions on file type uploads and images are embedded into the feed without any real additional effort.

I've also used it for Mike's dick pics. Image quality is just fabulous.

I've never heard of it. I'll try it if it's meant to be good. So many sites and log ins to remember, so it would be good if it was significantly better.

Anyway - 1 share!

So I've been tinkering around in the AAC slack channel. I downloaded the App  to my phone, which seems to be great for alerts. You can change your to different settings based on the channel. You have the option to get an alert for every new message or just when you're mentioned in a post. (It seems to use a twitter-esque @username system). So if we set up a slack channel for our games and then did an "@" at the next person up when we finished our turn, it would guarantee a notification to that person. Then each of us could decide whether we wanted alerts for all messages, or just to let us know when we're up. It would probably also really work well for auctions.

I don't know how well e-mail notifications work on it, though. But it might be worth a shot?

There's a mobile and desktop client. Both can save your login (and not like a click this button and login deal)... they're just on all the time. It is significantly more convenient and easier to use than a web forum, but I understand your hesitation.

Title: Re: Age of Steam-Ireland
Post by: rstites25 on July 15, 2017, 03:51:05 PM
Yes, but because I'm the only bidder it won't matter in this particular case. The scanned Eagle-Gryphon rules don't make this clear, but I think the condensed rules do. If the bid comes back around to a player at his original bid, he's not required to raise his own bid. So if you use your pass, it comes back to me. I'm not required to bid, so then the bid goes back to you to outbid me or pass and drop out.

See this thread (https://boardgamegeek.com/article/7074437#7074437).

It's kind of a shitty reward for taking the action last turn.

I'm going to go ahead and create a Slack channel. I will send you guys an e-mail invite. We can try it out and see how it works. If you guys don't like it, we can revert back to here.
