Title: Da Friday thread!
Post by: Toonces on August 10, 2012, 12:24:55 PM
Sweet...I'm home on leave so I can finally post this thread at a (relatively) decent time!

No surprises here...I'll be finishing up Dawnguard for sure (or at least trying to).

I played a few hours of Crusader Kings II as the Duke of Iceland.  I think I was having fun, wasn't I?  I'm not sure.  But I think I will stick with CK2 a bit longer and see if I can figure it out.  I need something to balance out Skyrim.

I'm going to go flight sim free this weekend and stick with strategy gaming.

Also, just to be clear, I consider CK2 a wargame, so I'm still cool.

I'll be playing some multiplayer Warlock, I know that much.  I'm also in the market for a cheap game, so I'll see what the Bargain Bucket on RPS brings. :)

Not going to have too much time for gaming this weekend due to some family bbq's and such but...

I intend to squeeze some game time in somewhere, just don't know what and when.

Same as last weekend:

Decisive Campaigns: Case Blue --

I'm one month in on a Russian Offensive starting on May 12, 1942.  German 6th and 2nd Armies mostly wiped out, but even on easy the AI is tough to overwhelm.  On the other hand ther Germans have lost almost 200,000 men and they seem to be coming apart all across the front while STAVKA is getting better at Command and Control and pumping divisions, fuel and supplies into the fronts faster and faster.  On the other hand, the Germans took all of the Crimea, releasing more forces, and with a smaller army they are probably burning less fuel so things are still up in the air.

BUT in other news the Dutch are attacking in Fontenoy and doing miraculously well thanks to miraculous initiative and artillery rolls and Van Yssel is about to open up with the main Dutch battery so I may be distracted from finishing off the Wehrmach by Waldeck's assault on Antoing and Fontenoy.

Da Dungeons Of Dredmor

Da Political Machine 2?

Da Epilogue roguelike.

And probably something else I didn't mention that catches my fancy, dropping the above mentioned for it.  :D

I don't envy you, Toonces. Your time on leave must be very precious. But I'm glad you are able to do what you like to do instead of having to follow orders for a while at least.

I'm not sure what I will be playing this weekend. My time with Railroad Tycoon II last weekend started something and I will probably be playing a few scenarios in it this weekend. I will most likely be playing a little Civ5 and Warlock as well.

There is also the possibility that one of more of the posters in this thread will make me aware of a game unfamiliar to me and resulting in me trying it out. Thanks in advance for that.

Well, I will start out with CM Italy. Then I will boot up Warlock but quickly turn it off and play more CM Italy!  I punctured my ear drum so I got some happy pills.....should make for interesting combat tactics.

You'll have to fill me in on the power alignments in your game. Are the Dutch an Axis Minor attacking France? Are they an unconquered Allied Minor liberating occupied France? Is this a 'What If?' variant or did your game play out to this particular state from a historical start?

As to my Friday- I'll be lucky to get any gaming in. I might try to re-start my ES: Oblivion game just before I ended up on the Shivering Isles (way too early in the game since I didn't know where I was going and I have most of the of main game to play).

I wish it was a good fight story....but no, had some type of infection that caused a perforation. That hurt, but when they cleaned it out, one of the little ear bone thingies pushed through the hole....it was a lot of fun. Anyway, good now.

OK.  Stop and get yourself a CMX2 game.  CMFI would be good only because it's got all the new engine upgrades already.  CMBN is awesome too plus with Commonwealth you can play as the Brits and Canadians.

I was somewhat following along in the other CM thread but I am still a bit out of the loop.  Tell me if I got this right.  If I buy CMBN w/ Commonwealth I'll have to pay extra later on to get the CMX2 engine?  If I get CMFI, I get the new engine but won't have the scenarios etc. from CMBN?

CMBN The Road to Monteborg campaign. I'm finally getting to the end of this sucker, the assault on Le Ham(I'm not making that name up). If you lose these last fights, you lose the campaign. The Germans have trenches, wooden and concrete bunkers and because I lost the last fight, tanks. I've got 2 full companies and count them, 4 Stuart tanks as reinforcements. Sometimes I wonder whose side Eisenhower is on. But that's OK,I've also got 107mm mortars and 8in. howertizers as arty support. My strategy is to hit anything big enough to hide a German behind with 8in. shells and hope my Stuarts are too damned little for the Germans to be able to see them.

Yep. CM:N and CM:FI are two different games. Right now, only CM:FI uses the new engine but they are releasing a patch to bring CM:N up to the new engine soon. Personally, I rather like the Italian scenarios better. Lots more infantry and halftrack action and less reliance on heavy tanks

Mike beat me to it.  I'm REALLY liking CMFI.  The new UI is fantastic and its a front of the war that is not very often explored in comsims compaired to France and the Eastern Front.  But CMBN is really good too. You will have made a good choice with either of the base games.

Was hoping to break in the Sergeants Miniatures Game...but opened up the base game from my lot purchase to find no Story Deck. So that's pretty much a pretty looking paperweight until the replacement deck gets here from Lost Battalion.

I still need to mess around with Okko and try it out, so that will likely be my board game for the weekend.

On the computer front, I may start making my way through my strategy game backlog. Not sure what that will specifically entail yet, though.

Not really sure what I'll be playing this weekend. I think my RPG phase is burning out. I've played almost nothing but skyrim and diablo 3 for the last 2-3 months. I'm working tomorrow and It's theoretically supposed to be nice all weekend, so I'm thinking of taking a break from gaming and taking my AR up to the mountains for some shooting on Sunday.

If I play anything it will probably be something like Distant Worlds, were I can set the AI to auto and sit back, relax, and watch the game more or less play itself.

Well, I just bought Conquest: Divide and Conquer (awful name, huh?) which is a nice little indie wargame.  I've also bought To The Moon, about which I have heard nothing but amazing things; I thought I'd finally see what all the fuss was about.

Both purchased via Desura (http://www.desura.com).

I'm really interested in what you think of this minis game. Looks good and easy to get into but very expensive. Please give us a mini review (pun intended) when you are finally able to give it a spin.

Raining like the proverbial 40 days and 40 nights here for the last couple days and for the next few so no outdoor chores (yeah!).

So more CiV G&K, got Kerbal Space demo to take for a spin, U-Boat Leader on the table....

I've never used Steam or Desura, how is Desura? I like that they offer linux, Mac and Windows.

Desura's great.  They mainly cater to the indie segment and they have quite a library of good, cheap games as well as some bigger ones from such publishers as Paradox.  They do a lot of alphafunding games too - essentially you pay a very low price to get in on the alphas of games.

They have a client which you kind of need to use, although a lot of games allow you to download independent installers too.  But the client is nice; it offers easy, one-click installation of games and apparently makes downloading mods just as easy, although I've never used that particular functionality.  Many games also come with demos which you can also grab via the client with a click.  There's also lots of community stuff all built-in too, like forums and reviews and stuff.  Everything available through the client is also available on the website.

I really like Desura, and although I've never had to contact customer support I've heard they're great in that area too.

Edit: Oh, and yeah, they always support as many platforms as they can.  Most of my Desura library can be played on Windows, Linux or Mac, and you only pay once. :)

Perhaps something you have to ask your bank to allow, then.  Using Paypal isn't much hassle mind, I've been using it for years.  I'd never use them to accept large volumes of payments if I were an indie dev, but for buyers making the occasional purchase it's absolutely fine.

The error said that the bank may not allow foreign transactions.

As Huw mentioned, that's on your bank's end most likely.  Mine doesn't do that but I'll occasionally get a phone call from them asking if an overseas (foreign currency) charge on my debit card is legit.

Sounds like your bank just has that currency or nation blocked by default.   Isn't Desura located in Australia or something??

Having PayPal is kinda nice, once you go through the bit of work to get it set up.  It's nice to have the extra in-between if you ever need to log a disupte.  Plus, and most notably, I fairly regularly don't get charged the extra pocket change for currency exchange when purchasing foreign such as at GamersGate, Desura, etc.  Supposedly not supposed to be charged for any of that through places that support PayPal payments, but you gotta shoot PayPal an email to right that problem when that occasionally happens.

The error said that the bank may not allow foreign transactions.

A while back my bank blocked every foreign purchase I tried to make. I had to call them every time I wanted to buy anything outside the United States. They explained that there had been so many incidents of credit card fraud overseas that they had been forced to be extremely cautious with overseas purchases. This went on for weeks with me getting irate and them getting tired of me calling them up every time I wanted to charge a $1.99 game in a special sale on GamersGate, for example. The next to last time I called, I asked the woman working in customer service how many times my credit card had been used fraudulently. She asked me for how long a period, the last month, year, etc. I told her over the entire time I have had a credit card from them (over 20 years). She looked it up and replied that my credit card had never been used fraudulently. The next time I called them to get a credit card purchase cleared, I was told it was no longer necessary for me to phone them because they had unblocked my foreign purchases.

I hope that helps you out.

I just got done a marathon 4 hour session of CK2, continuing my Iceland playthrough.  I'm not sure exactly what is going on, but I think I'm enjoying it.  I had a pretty good run going and then sparked a civil war with my neighbor on the Reykjavik side that went on for about 10 years before we agreed to a white peace.  I married several daughters to Swedish and Norwegian princes but then somehow screwed up because I ended up with my female character married to a prince of Sweden, a son as an heir that would have ended the game for me due to the succession laws.  For about 2 years I was trying to save up enough cash to assassinate my husband but then I figured out how to change the law to seniority so that the heir changed from my son to a male kinsman.

The last 5 years or so have been a bloodbath with pretenders to the throne getting knocked off left and right.

I sort of get what's going on but I can't imagine how to manage a kingdom filled with vassals!  I have so many half-brothers and -sisters and aunts and uncles and who knows what, half of them love me, half hate me...it's a bit bewildering!

So, right now I'm going to try one more time to unite Iceland and then press a claim on the Faroes and see what happens.  Neat game!

you need a matrilineal marriage Toonces - where the child will be of your line and not of the husbands

Do you have a claim on the other Icelandic areas?
Title: Re: Da Friday thread!
Post by: Toonces on August 12, 2012, 03:08:24 PM
Iceland is divided into two areas- east and west.  The East guy (me) is the Duke of the Duchy of Iceland, and the guy to the west is my vassal.  Now I was under the impression that if I was the Duke and the other guy was the vassal then there was no reason for me to "own" the west Iceland area.  But I'm still figuring the game out so I started a war to claim it but couldn't get enough troops to close the deal.  After 10 years we both had enough and declared white peace.

Now, I've sent my chancellor over there to fabricate a claim but I can't remember how to declare war after you fabricate a claim.  Iceland doesn't have one of those dashed lines around it so I think that means it's still divided?

Finally, I'm having trouble finding men to accept matrilineal marriages.  At any rate, I changed the laws and dodged that bullet for now, but that really pissed of Norway and Sweden, who had claims to Iceland after my character kicked the bucket.

Maybe I should post up my save file so you can look at it and tell me what's going on!

I don't mind that at all toonces.... If you click on the bit that's not yours and declare war it will tell you what you terms the war will be on - de jure or claim or holy war

Once you get a claim on it, you need to bring up the Diplomacy page for that land's current ruler.  You can do that by clicking on the county, and then clicking on the ruler's pic or coat of arms.  On that ruler's window, you find the diplo option for Declare War.  Then it will often go to another screen giving you options for the reason you're declaring war, and that shows the win/lose conditions and what the spoils of those outcomes will be so you'll have to choose one.  Choose the 'Claim' casus belli there as it's likely the one you want since a win will grant you full ownership of the county in question.

All marriage propositions have some + and - factors that are shown when you are looking to make one (along with other types of diplo deals).  Check the tooltips on each of those + or - lines to get an idea of why you're being turned down.  I'm pretty sure that demanding a Matrilineal marriage to your queen gives a BIG negative bonus to most anyone who owns land themself, or is high-up in line of succession there.  It makes the matrilineal option rightfully difficult to cut with most nobility.  So you'll probably have to make that deal with some fifth child or lowly courtesan to get it to fly.   As I said, check those + and - things .. since the AI will only accept a proposal if the pluses outnumber the minuses, and those will give you a better idea of how to cozy up to them for similar future proposals in all diplo actions that  use them.

 ;)

edit:  It sounds as if you've taken to the throat-cutting like a duck to water, judging by your attempt to kill off the new hubby after finding the marriage a disadvantage.  ;D ;D  Changing succession laws was a great game-saver, too, although that is certainly what caused a lot of the family members to go apeshit, too.

Yeah, I did a TON of research in to it before buying because of the price. I'll post some impressions once I get a chance to play it a time or two.

Looking forward to what you think of the game.

Also, just to be clear, I consider CK2 a wargame, so I'm still cool.

Sorry.  I was very unclear.  Fontenoy is a boardgame.  The distraction would be due to my playing the boardgame and not playing Case Blue.  As it happened the Dutch onslaught isn't as impressive as expected other than one lucky shot that rendered about 100 of the Regiment of Provence hors-de-combat.

In case Blue -- I started with the worst possible situation for the Axis : easy Axis AI, free set-up May 12 start and the results have been interesting.  The AI is defending the Dneipr line with KGs and Roumanian Security Police while most of the Axis forces seem to be in pockets near the Don.  Axis losses are about 300,000 and probably are about to go up really fast to about 500,000 as the big pockets get processed.  Russian losses are about 250,000 and about to go up to about 300,000 maybe before there are no Axis forces left on the map in a month or two.
