Silent Disapproval Robot

Playing Naval Action on the PC got me in the mood to play some Sails of Glory so I set up what was supposed to be an 8 player game at a monthly miniatures event here in Vancouver tonight.  In the end, only three of us made it and one of the guys had never played before.  We decided to set up a simple little scenario on the open sea where two British frigates, the HMS Concorde and the HMS Terpsichore went up against the French frigate Courageuse and the Spanish frigate, Ifigenia.

I played as the Brits and had a bloody good time.  I've only played twice before and I forgot what a fun little game this is.  I started out taking some photos but got so engrossed in the play that I forgot to keep it up.  Lots of goofy mistakes as we forgot how certain rules worked, a few collisions between the French and Spanish, and a resounding victory for the Royal Navy in the end.

Here are my two glorious frigates.

Opening set up.  Brits at the bottom and the filth of Europe at the top.

My opening salvo from the Concorde against the Courageuse.  Walloped her pretty good and caused her to spring a leak.

Point blank shot from the Tirpsichore against the bow of the Courageuse with a sprinkling of musketry from the rigging for good measure.  (just missed getting the raking shot bonus as I wasn't quite lined up perfectly on her bow.)

French and Spaniards colliding.

The old that is strong does not wither,

Very!

Have you played it?

LongBlade

No.

I'm trying very hard not to think of it, either. The last thing I need is another minis game sucking my dollars out of my wallet.

SDR is good for posting minis game porn and making all of us want to buy it.  >:(

If X-Wing borrowed heavily from Wing of Glory, Armada definitely took some cues from Sails of Glory.  Or the other way round.  I'm not sure which came out first.

Hell... I bought it (and 2 extra ships) a couple years ago.  Punched & still unplayed.  :crazy2:

Never played?  Madness!  This game is awesome, especially if you play with all the advanced and optional rules.  In our game, my little frigate caught fire from a close range barrage while simultaneously punching a hole below the waterline in the hull of the dirty French scoundrels.  It was a scramble to see who could repair the damage first before it got bad enough to sink our respective ships.  The fire managed to knock out 50% of my broadside strength before I could put it out but the French suffered much worse and my Marines shot the crap out of their crew and they didn't have enough hands left to man their guns, pump out water, and repair the leak.  Great tension.
