  Scenario from Shattered Armada:

Historically, the Republicans bombed the Deutschland more or less by accident (it was in an anchorage that had been used only by the Nationalists up til then).  The Deutschland was put out of action somehow by the bombing (not duplicated in my first run-through -- 100kg bombs won't even penetrate the deck and light damage and a small fire was inflicted by 3 bomb hits from 36 dropped on a large, motionless target LMT) and then the Republican surface forces (attempting a Port Arthur on top of their Pearl Harbor) broke off.
And then the Admiral Scheer bombarded a Republican coastal city.

Less historically, the Republicans could have tried to sink both the Deutschland and the Admiral Scheer as a way of starting to clear the Germans out of Spain and protecting their Commie Soviet arms shipments.

But so far, the Deutschland is holding its own.

Well, that was nice and then things got really awful.  Duetschland took 10 6-inch hits and 30 4-inch hits in the next 3 minutes.  Even though none of those hits penetrated the armor, by Command at Sea 4th ed rules, they still did 50% "damage" and blew up the light aa weapons.  That was about 200 in damage points!!!  Another turn like that and apparently the pocket battleship would have been bashed into a rapidly sinking hulk without having its armor penetrated.  Which makes one wonder.  The closest real-word event would be the pointblank battle with US Cruisers and DDs engaging Japanese BCs off Guadalcanal, but even there with 8-inch guns and larger DD guns, the Japanese BC was not pounded into sinking by the non-penetrating gunfire.
