I saw Anchorman 2 was added to Netflix tonight, so I checked it out. Not nearly as terrible as I thought it was. Started poorly and I thought I was wasting my time, but I stuck with it and it got much better and stayed entertaining. The ending parts...well that didn't make a whole hell of a lot of sense, but it appeals to me.
After that I went looking for something else and just stumbled across this one: The Knights of Badassdom. There's some actors in it you have no doubt heard of it, but I've not heard one peep of this movie, anywhere.
Check out the trailer; you'll probably recognize a few of them.
Knights of Badassdom is really, really fun.
I'm watching Anchorman 2 right now.
Netflix gem?
Try John Dies At The End.

Pretty good stuff and surprisingly high quality, despite some genre cliches.

I'm just now catching up with it, but Daredevil season one is outstanding! Great casting, from Daredevil/Murdock to Foggy to Karen to Ben, all the way down the cast. Well written dialogue and very sharp writing. DD was always one of my favorites and I'm very happy to finally see him done justice on the screen.
As a side note, Vincent D'Onofrio is simply brilliant as Kingpin. No one dimensional villian, this cat has layers you wouldn't imagine from just reading the comics.
Great show!

Agreed. DD was always a compelling character and the show more than does him justice. It's interesting in that, to a certain degree, you have to work to like Murdock/DD and work to hate Fisk/Kingpin. Good and evil are not always as simple as we would like to believe.

If you're into history and witchcraft, check out Salem...surprisingly scary and well done, and the female lead is quite hawt.

Lucy Lawless is joining the cast for season 2.
I do get annoyed by Salem's dialogue language anachronisms at times.
If Luther is still available, it's well worth watching.
Also, Flashpoint. Surprisingly good. The Pink Power Ranger is a good actress and singer.
Wentworth. It's a modern version of Prisoner: Cell Block H, which ran in the late 70's and 80's. It's a hard core women's prison drama set in New Zealand. It's definitely not Orange is the New Black, the Wentworth women would make the girls in Orange their bitches in record time. Pretty damn good show, almost a guilty pleasure.

Netflix does well offering a lot of really good British mysteries that were originally broadcast on PBS Masterpiece Mystery. "Foyle's War", "Midsomer Murders", "Sherlock", to name a few.
Is the Americanized version of 'Cracker' available online anywhere? I didn't get the chance to watch when it was on TV and I'm curious how it compares to the original? I don't expect it to be better, just 'different'.
Some recommended lesser known & indies currently on Netflix:
Movies:
Europa Report > Sci-Fi, mission to Europa
Night Watch (plus the sequel Day Watch) > Supernatural alterna-world
Ravenous > Supernatural/Slasher Western (Wendigo!)
John Dies At The End > Horror Comedy
Tucker & Dale Vs Evil > Slasher Comedy
Black Death > Medieval Thriller
Valhalla Rising > Viking Weirdness
Those are all somewhat dark movies, in their respective genres, but well worth watching for anyone.
If you have Amazon Prime, I'd also recommend watching The Color Out Of Space (2012). Despite being as indie as it gets, and some bad acting in places (mostly when indie German actors are trying to act American), this still has some wonderfully dark & foreboding stretches that rival any old Twilight Zones and the like. And it's Lovecraft, of course.

My kids have been watching 'The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes!' on Netflix. I've watched several episodes with them and it's damned good. Maintains decent fidelity to the comics while mixing in elements of the MCU.

Saw a documentary about The Beatles fan club secretary called "Good Ol Freda". I would call that a must watch for any Beatles fans out there.
Mirth, agreed: Avengers:EMH is objectively better than the DCAU's Justice League/Unlimited series, and that is no faint praise.
The second season unfortunately stumbles somewhat for various reasons (probably having to do with the lead writers jumping ship once word came down the series was being canceled for a reboot slightly more in line with the Avengers movie at least visually). Still good, but not at the same watermark.
If y'all haven't gotten to the Justice League yet, I recommend watching the three seasons of Superman:TAS first, since major plot points in JL/U tie directly back to events in that series. (Batman, not so much; even Batman Beyond could be technically skipped, despite the JL finale episode, one season too soon due to the producers not being aware they'd get another season yet, being almost completely a finale to that series, too.)
Btw, is Land of the Lost on Netflix? I mean the original series? That is a surprisingly hardcore science fiction epic, if the eps are watched in order (leaving the last of the first season eps to be watched at the end of the second season, since they didn't know they'd get a second season. The third season can be safely skipped, and probably should be.) It will scare the absolute pee out of kids, too. >:D
There's an indy movie called "Chef" you guys might like - I really dug it. Great little film with lots of star cameos in it. Stars Jon Favreau, Sofía Vergara, John Leguizamo, Scarlett Johansson, Dustin Hoffman, and Robert Downey, Jr., as well as a few others I'm forgetting about.
Favreau is a talented cook in a high-end restaurant, but he gets fed up and ends up quitting his job to start a lunch truck. It's highly rated and very entertaining.

I watched The Art of the Steal last night, a kind of comedy-suspense film starring Kurt Russell (looking oooolllddd, but still a hell of an actor). The movie revolves around stealing valuable works of art, and involves a big plot twist that you can kind of see coming, but it's still a great ride, full of laughs, and Kurt shows he hasn't lost his acting chops. I gave it a 5 out of 5 star rating.

Cool. I'll check it out.
I'll have to check out that Avengers and DC stuff. Just about every night I look at the unwatched Agents of SHIELD episodes and think "meh," then Daredevil and think "meh," and then ran across "The Art of the Steal." It's always great to find a movie in there that I've never heard of and be very happy with the time spent watching it.
I keep meaning to watch Daredevil, but I've been feeling 'meh' about it too. Might try to get it into it this weekend.
It's REALLY hard to get into, Daredevil, but it does amp up. Once Vincent D'Onofrio makes his entrance as Kingpin around episode 5 or so, it really starts to take off, but unfortunately that's about where I left off. You'll have to give it a few episodes, mirth. I am only wanting to go back and watch it because of Vincent's performance, which was phenomenal.
On another note, I was very unimpressed with Vincent in Jurassic World. Normally I think he's a great actor (I mean, come on: "seven-six-two mil-li-me-ter...full metal jacket") but JW was overall pretty meh. His role was just awful, one-dimensional, and his lines were bad (though overall the writing was pretty weak). It really sucks that a MEH movie can make a billion-plus (including my eight bucks). Fucking Hollywood.
I need to get back into Daredevil. There's just not much on there right now that's making me want to binge-watch.
The series "Inbetweeners" is pretty good if you don't mind some Brit teen humor (which is pretty much Brit humor, so get ready for a lot of "wanker" and "your dad's bent" references, LOL). It made me laugh like an idiot, though the movies not so much. DEFINITELY not for kids.

D'Onofrio is amazing in the Daredevil series.
I started getting into it after DD was torturing his captives for info. Not graphic torture, mind you, but definitely more results-oriented than most. Not just holding a sharp object to a guys' throat while asking him about his connections, but slowly shoving it in kinda stuff. Grittier. ;)

Ah, the 90s LiS film. A movie I like both more and less whenever I happen to watch it. Though slightly more 'more' than more 'less' each time, so on the balance it's gaining ground. The fact I've given it a chance more than once says something about my perception of its merits anyway.

It was a nice doc, but I felt they ended the timeline too early.
Need a really long doc on WWI aircraft & prodution improvements throughout the war. The couple docs I've seen on this subject thus far have been far too brief.
It's fascinating how quickly the technology advanced, and the stories from the pilots flying those rickety deathtraps are even more fascinating.

Nurse Jackie was a Showtime series that is now on Netflix (or may have been for a while). It's a dark comedy, and is pretty damn good.
Just saw Rock Star was added to it as well, which is a fun movie about 80s hair metal. Lots of hair metal greats in the movie in cameos, too...Jeff Pilson, Zakk Wylde, Jason Bonham, and Myles Kennedy to name a few.
Parks and Recreation just added Season 7, which I think is the final season in that show. It's fun to watch, and funny to see Chris Pratt before he became an A-list film star.

Marvel would never do it and the fans wouldn't allow it either but I would give anything to see a remake of The Incredible Hulk 1978 TV series.
Swift and Shift Couriers is hilarious if you don't mind a lot of cursing and low-brow and VERY un-PC humor.

I think Hulk fans look at the TV show the same way Batman fans look at the Adam West show. Most don't like it and pretend it didn't exist. When the 2008 Incredible Hulk movie came out a few years back and the TV show was brought up people would say things like 'the Hulk was too small', 'the show was too brainy with no action', 'Hulk didn't talk', 'it was just a rehash of the The Fugitive', etc. That's not to say both shows didn't have fans, I just don't think most of them are the same fans as the comic following ones. I never cared for the comics Hulk but LOVE the Bixby one. Kenneth Johnson was a genius!
The Hulk TV show was one the best TV/Movie superhero works from that era. It certainly was the best thing involving a Marvel character for a long time.
I'm not saying the fans would want a pure remake of the TV series on the same scale. But a lot of us liked the bare tie-ins to the show in the MCU movie, and wished those could have been a lot stronger. (The TV themes were excellent, for example; why not go ahead and use those in the MCU instead of a few bars for one scene???)
In the time honored tradition of "cheesing Mom off," the boy and I have what we call "Crappy Movie Mornings," at least once a week (typically Saturday) this summer. The premise is simple: 1-2 stars rating and it's on the viewing list!
So far, Big Ass Spider has turned out to be surprisingly funny. Not so much Zombeavers and Zoombies but at least the horrible CGI and acting make for some good laughs. Most implausible, and I really hesitate to use that word in light of everything else I've posted so far, is the movie Airlpane vs. Volcano. It hits all the marks for a vehicle disaster flick, but wooo-whee is it a stinker. Dean Cain will indeed do anything for a paycheck.

I've been watching Trapped. It's a murder mystery TV show set in Iceland and reminds be a bit of Fargo without the dark humour. Rather enjoying it so far.
The show takes place in a small Icelandic town that relies on fishing and the occasional luxury liner full to tourists who show up to gawk at the local glacier. Trouble starts when a liner shows up from Denmark at the same time that some fishermen pull a dismembered body out of the drink. The 3-person local police force who usually have nothing more to cope with than the town drunk find themselves having to deal with a murder while trying to cope with a hostile ship's crew, angry tourists, and an intruding mayor who used to be the town's top cop.
Based on Tim Allen's recommendation, we went looking for it on Netflix here one day, and apparently you can't get it in the US on Netflix :-\
I noticed Designated Survivor early this morning...it stars Kiefer Sutherland as the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, selected to go to an undisclosed location while the President delivers the State of the Union to Congress and most cabinet members. The premise is, in the first episode, a terrorist attack on the Capital wipes out the lot, leaving Kiefer's character as President. He really sells the role as a fish-out-of-water guy and the first episode was very enjoyable.

^Meh.
It does look interesting, but I have to go with 'meh' also, just because it's hard to get excited about something that's not coming out for another ten or so months. :(
Dunno if it's upthread or not, but Thirteen Reasons is a very powerful short series about a high school kid who commits suicide, and posthumously tells the story through a series of audio tapes
If you've got teenagers, it's must-see TV. Wow.
Here's one I stumbled on last night - totally unexpected. I love it when that happens.
I haven't seen Antonio Banderas in a movie in a looooong time (doesn't mean he's not been in anything, I just haven't seen him in one). And this one is a damn good movie. Just came out this year.
Gave it a watch. Standard genre flick, but pretty good. Ben Kingsley must really need the work :P
I was thinking the same about Antonio.
The little girl was pretty unimpressive as an actor, but the rest of them were great, especially the security staff.

Agreed. The supporting cast went a long way to making it enjoyable.
I looked it up on Wiki and that vaguely Asian guy is apparently a huge pop star in the Far East, in some boy band named Fahrenheit.
They filmed the movie in Bulgaria, of all places. LOL. I guess Bulgaria is the Louisiana of Europe.
I was reading about it too. Apparently it was a direct-to-Netflix thing. I get Banderas needing anything for a paycheck, but Ben Kingsley? Not that I'm complaining, he made it a lot more fun than it otherwise would have been.
That's the truth (about Kingsley making the movie). He plays a great bad guy...loved him in Sneakers.
Sneakers is one of my all-time favorite movies. That was a fantastic cast.
Kingsley was a good Mandarin as well.
Kingsley was great, but the concept for the Mandarin in IM3 was awful.

I loved Iron Man comics, so the whole IM-vs-Mandarin thing was a long-standing rivalry that the studio totally butchered.
This movie is one of the best horror/comedy films I've seen in a while.

Eh.. it was... alright. Had a few moments, I suppose.
There was more 'kid running around
Home Alone style' than it needed. I didn't end up watching the whole thing in one, or even two, goes.
I'll admit that my horror comedy preference is a bit more of the
Evil Dead or
Stan Against Evil sort. So my apathy was probably due to taste.
As far as horror / comedy I would check out "Tucker and Dale vs evil" I think it is still on Netflix. Pretty funny and stars Alan Tudyck and Tyler Lebine.
Another sort of comedy/definitely horror - Don't Kill It.
With Dolph Lundgren as a demon hunter! :)
These movies aren't exactly "gems"
Blasphemy! Dolph Lundgren is pure cheese! Pure cheese can be refined into jewelry! Just ask gameleaper; I'm sure he knows of a process.
I watched Arrival on Amazon Prime over the weekend. Excellent sci-fi movie.

The one with Jeremy Renner? Yeah, that was a surprise.
I call a movie a "gem" if it keeps my attention. I think I have adult ADHD, because entertainment-wise, I'm all over the place. I'll have Netflix on one tab, Amazon on another, at least two to four YouTube tabs open, a board game within reach...it's hard for me to sit still long enough to do one thing, if it's not engaging. Arrival was something that kept me rooted until the end.
I thought Arrival was a bit weak and predictable. Also confusing with the whole communication slant thing. But not bad. Dolph looks like fun though. Demon F.B.I. agents have got to be good.

I liked the language/time concept. And I really liked how it became a story about the choices Amy Adams' character had to make. The rest of it was really backdrop for her character's story.
Hard sci-fi with a strong female lead, not something you see a lot of.
As for actual horror/suspense movies on Netflix..
I quite enjoyed the South Korean movie The Wailing (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5215952/?ref_=nv_sr_1). :bd:
Was happily surprised with how I couldn't tell which way the things would go. Being used to spotting plot twists & paths in most movies before they happen, this one kept me addled and second guessing myself. Made it even more enjoyable! 8)
Highly recommend if you don't mind reading subtitles (which were done well iirc). Don't read any spoilers!
I enjoy South Korean films in general - the ones I've seen on Netflix are pretty damn awesome. Thanks for the recommend, I'll check that one out.
Yeah I usually will give the Korean movies a watch. some are pretty good. One...I can't remember the title..."Train to....????" was a zombie movie and was about the passengers on the train as the outbreak took place throughout the city....was pretty good.

'Tucker and Dale' is great, although the last little wrap-up kinda dropped the humor a bit longer than it should have.
I also enjoyed 'John Dies At The End'. Mix of weird horror & comedy. The movie couldn't possibly do the book justice, leaving out a ton of stuff and having a completely different (worse) end, but it was still enjoyable. Cult style film.

^ I just started another Korean movie called 'Office.' It's a fairly creepy murder mystery that's pretty enthralling. I'm about halfway through it now.
Thought I'd change the name of this thread to encompass Amazon Prime (and other) titles, too.
Did this to share this one with you guys. 'Tin Star,' on Amazon Prime.
QuoteSet in the majestic Canadian Rockies, Tin Star tells the story of a former British detective who brings his family to the tiny, tranquil town of Little Big Bear for a better life. But when his small town is overrun by migrant workers from a massive new oil refinery, the wave of organized crime that follows them threatens to sweep away everything in its wake and dig up the past.
Tim Roth stars, and he's pretty fantastic in this.
^I've been meaning to check out Tin Star. I enjoy most of Tim Roth's work.
I watched the first few minutes of something called 'Deutschland 83' last night. It's about the East Germans sending a young spy into West Germany to infiltrate the West German Military during Reagan's first term. It looks to be quite interesting for anyone who has an interest in the time period. Subtitle warning for those who find that a buzzkill.
^ Sounds very interesting, but it's not on Netflix and not coming up as a free watch on Amazon Prime. Are you watching it through another source?
It's on Hulu: https://www.hulu.com/deutschland-83
Cool, thanks! O0

It's a good series.
However, I thought some of the plot points, later on, were too artificially forced. You'll probably see what I mean eventually.
Found a pretty good German WW2 war drama.
That does look good BC. Thank you for posting it.
Just finished Generation War. To sum it up, "wow" does it a great injustice.
It's 'only' three episodes, but each is movie-length (about 1.5 hours each). Highly, highly recommend it.
Found something else I thought you guys would like.
It's on Netflix, called "Nobel." It's a Norwegian-filmed series about a Norwegian Special Forces soldier in Afghanistan. The intro alone is pretty mind-bending. I wish I could find a trailer for it that's in English, but I can't - which is very weird, considering the series on Netflix is indeed in Norwegian, but it has English sub-titles.
Here's a link to it on Netflix.

Here's another gem of a war movie: Hyena Road, on Netflix.
I've read some describing this as "Canadian Sniper," but I've seen the movie Sniper and don't think the two are comparable. I liked Hyena Road much more than Sniper. Not that Sniper was a bad movie, I just liked this one better.
I'd like to see it but for some reason it's not available on Canadian Netflix or Amazon Prime.

I cut the cable about 5 months ago. Streaming only for me these days.
I cut cable years ago. I have netflix and amazon--along with a $7.99 sub to cloud TV that offers up One news network, newsmax and the fight network along with the blaze and about 50 other channels I never watch...but the 7.99 is worth it for the news and the fight network which has a lot of MMA. Overall amazon is the best deal. Just this week alone I probably exceeded the $99 yearly fee just on free shipping--where I've ordered a memory foam matress, the bedframe for it and a TV stand. I never tried one before and locally the cheapest was $400. Amazon had them for $150. Another $50 for the platform--and I got a new bed for about $200.
Locally even cheapy matresses and frame were upwards of $500. I'm pretty pleased with the 10" memory foam. pretty comfotable. I was leary as I have a bad back but alas no back problems with it. I don't know how they do it----if i had shipped those boxes themselve they would have exceeded the $200 I paid for it. Even a small box costs $15 to ship--and this stuff was shipping and received in 2 days.

At first I thought "Shadowrun" but without the cyberpunk it sounds more like "Hellboy".
I started watching this late last night. I'm about 30 minutes in and would be more if not for distractions. Anyway, it's pretty good - I'm impressed with Will Smith's acting chops in this one. The setting is nothing like what I thought it would be - I was expecting something related to Shadowrun but apparently people, Orcs, Elves, Fairies, etc. have been living side by side since the dawn of mankind.
Watched it last nights - 7/10
Elves are posh bad asses and orcs are tough assholes - who knew?
Reminded me of that one with James caan and the aliens
I just can't do Will Smith again so soon after Deadshot or Deadeye or whoever he was in Suicide Squad. :hide:
Trust me SS, he's a LOT better in Bright. It's very easy to empathize with his character.
OK. I'll give it a look. Finished "Godless" last night, finish-up "Punisher" tonight, then there's "Marco Polo" Season 2 & 3.... But it's on my list.
I only got about halfway through by this morning before we had to go out for the entire day - just got back finally. But, it's very good. I normally don't think much of Will Smith as an actor - he's okay but he's...well, he's to acting what his music was to gangster rap, if that makes any sense. Pretty vanilla, not bad, not great, very middle of the road for the most part. He displays some talent in this one.
'Ok ok we're going to die, it's going to be nasty ass titty bar dead, let's do this'
I enjoyed it. Nice to see something different for a change. Sure looks like a series setup pilot. I hope it makes it. I liked to know more about the "world".

Doubly worth watching due to being something unusual in big movies today. In this case something in the urban fantasy genre, and for adults. :bd:
I hope Netflix' upcoming
Altered Carbon movie received comparable quality/funding.

I enjoyed the first season.
Think I stopped watching somewhere in the middle of the second(?) because the same melodrama instigating formula kept being used. Repetition ended my viewing.
Watched Bright over night shift. It was OK but I could have done with less of the heavy handed race/class warfare stuff.
I wish they'd used Larry Correia's Monster Hunter International books as the source material instead. Trailer park elves, gangsta gnomes, and orcs who fly Hind gunships. Could have been epic.
We finished season 3 of Broadchurch. Not as good as the first two seasons, which was excellent, but still a very good show.
I watched Black Mirror S4E1 the other night. Hadn't watched the show before (though I had heard of it). The episode was excellent.
If you enjoy Twilight Zone style anthologies, you'll probably love Black Mirror.
I heard that's good too.
I watched the first two eps of Black Mirror (S1) and thought the social media one (the first episode) was memorable and great. The second one was pretty good too (think it was something about a haunted house? Been a while). I didn't realize it was in four seasons until yesterday, so I'll have to go back to it eventually.
Also regarding Bright - I went looking for more info on the supposed sequel that Netflix is now planning to do and found a LOT of hate from critics on this movie.

Good point, MD.

I'm just talking about straight-up alternate history. No magic, wizards, time travel, fairies, Turtledove-like crap, that kind of thing.

Saw this one advertised a bit ago but didn't pay much attention to it. Just started watching it, and it's...it's...well, watch this. :)
This is one of the many UK programs I enjoy watching. I caught this for a brief time early last year and was fascinated by it because of how the legal system works (and doesn't work) in cases of re-possession in the UK. Netflix added the first two seasons recently though I think this is still going strong in the UK and is on series 6 or 7 by now.
I had The Inbetweeners on a lot during work - I'd already seen the series but I like having background noise on while I'm working - and it's quite a brilliant and funny, if coarse and gross, show. There's three series and two movies on Netflix and the humor is pretty well developed around a group of four English schoolkids that are just about to finish...well whatever it is the UK calls high school, before going to uni.
The actors are good at what they do, so when the second movie finished there was the usual Netflix promo, and in it I saw two of the actors from The Inbetweeners. Curious, I clicked on it. White Gold is the name.
It has a bit of a connotation that it's referring to cocaine. It DOES take place in the early 80s and there's a LOT of 80s music in it, which is not necessarily a bad thing. While the drug does come up, it's not what they're selling, so I'm interested in seeing how BBC can make a show about selling window frames entertaining. The first episode was quite funny...again, if this kind of humor is your bag.
Bright is getting a sequel

Good. The movie had it's flaws but was much better than critics said. My only real gripe was that there wasn't more deep world backstory alluded to, something that can be remedied with new scripts.
I actually liked that they didn't do a deep dive on the history. To me it gave it the feel that it's kinda always the way it's been, were just two schmucks trying to survive in a shitty world.

If you were ever a fan of National Lampoon (the magazine, as well as the early movies like Animal House and such), this is a must-watch.
You guys should check out 'Spectral'...surprisingly good military sci-fi that I just found literally 10 minutes ago, randomly, and it is excellent so far.
Somebody brought that one up months ago.
I've been enjoying the hell out of, "Ash vs The Evil Dead". The Season 2 opener featured Lee Majors as Ash's father and they did a, "Six-Million Dollar Man" reference line that almost made me pee my pants laughing. Great show! O0
I just watched 'Radius' on netfix, entirely by accident, and it turned out to be a great flick. The setup is that a guy (played by Diego Klathoff from 'Blacklist') wakes up from a mysterious accident to find that anyone who comes within 50 feet of him drops dead instantly. The scenery and soundtrack have a rural starkness that reminds me of the movie 'Witness' from the 80's.
I didn't see Spectral listed here anywhere, my bad.
I forgive you.
I may have mentioned Spectral somewhere...can't remember. But yes, it is a really surprisingly good flick.
Shockingly so. A military sci-fi ghost story. I can honestly say I have never seen another movie like it. Reminds me of Children of Men, World War Z, Stalingrad and some others rolled in to one. Will finish it later.
:2funny: :2funny: :2funny:
This is on Amazon Prime. It's very tongue-in-cheek and quite funny.
Watching Cloverfield Paradox right now...some wacky/fruity stuff here as well.
I started watching it and didn't bother finishing it. Too dumb.
A little bizarre but not bad...and the Chinese chick has a nice rear.
Heh. True.
Just finished it.

I thought the ending was the best part.
That was a big goddamned ending.
But I thought you quit half way through?
I watched the last five minutes.
Conceptually, the Cloverfield universe is far more interesting than the movies. I did enjoy 10 Cloverfield Lane. Mostly due to the strength of the performances of Goodman and Winstead.
Goodman was great in 10 Cloverfield Lane. I half expected him to suddenly appear in Paradox.

That would have made it worth watching. My understanding is that Donal Logue's character in Paradox is somehow related to Goodman's character in Cloverfield Lane (they share the same last name).
My head hurts.
Did you want to talk about Cloverfield? :P
Smoking clover will make your head hurt.
The whole Cloverfield universe is really frightening before you even stop to think about it.
The secret of life: Never stop to think.
I still haven't seen 10 Cloverfield Lane, but I did watch Paradox last week.
Cloverfield Lane is the best in the series.
Yeah I can't disagree.
Isn't there a WW2 one in the works?
I hope not.
Yes that's what I read. Plus one additional movie.
Oh jeebus
I still haven't seen any of them yet, though '10 Cloverfield Lane' is tempting me. The whole 'shaky camera collage' thing that started with 'Blair Witch' just doesn't appeal to me so I have not watched the first 'Cloverfield' yet.. I can deal with it in small bits or even for 2/3 a film as was done in 'Europa Report' (tho those cameras didn't shake much) but not for a whole movie. Please tell me that 'Cloverfield Paradox' isn't like the first one in that.
Neither of the Cloverfield sequels have the shaky cam nonsense. That was one of the reasons I intensely disliked the first movie.
Into the Badlands. Set in a post apocalyptic world, where Barons have carved out a niche and outlawed guns. The Baron's keep forces of highly trained fighters, called Clippers, and jockey for position. I can't say that there isn't a bit of cheese factor for me, but, there are at least two martial arts fights per episode and they are well choreographed. The downside is that Netflix only has the first season of 6 episodes and it ends in a cliffhanger. AMC has made and shown the second season and the third will premier sometime this month. I am hoping that the third season being out will allow Netflix to pick up the second.
The shaky cam doesn't really bother me, so I enjoyed the first Cloverfield. And yes AFAIK there are two new additional movies in production right now.

Same.
First one - too much damn shaky cam. Didn't even like shaky cam when ppl fawned over it in Blair Witch. :pullhair:
I thought 10 Cloverfield Lane was great.

Try
Jungle with Daniel Radcliffe, on Amazon Prime.
He plays a guy from Israel in 1980 that went on a sabbatical from the homeland, finding his way to Bolivia, where he befriended a German and an American, and together with a guide they decide to explore the 'real' jungle. Of course, things don't exactly go as planned. The movie is very engaging and Radcliffe threw himself into the role, apparently, by starving himself throughout filming.
...well alrighty then.
Did you just quote yourself for no apparent reason?

I don't believe any of this shit.
That's OK Gus. " Shit believes in us even if we don't believe in it". Gandhi told me that one night drunk on our asses sitting at the bar of a Ramada Inn. Then the little bastard skipped-out leaving me to pay the tab. That killed my stint in the Pacifist Movement. >:(
Don't mess with Ghandi.
That wasn't Gandhi, SS. That was Venkatanarasimharajuvaripet Pradesh, and he runs the Circle-K on the corner down from your house.
^ That was funnier in my head, somehow.
Anyway, here's another interesting little show...typical British dry humor, not hilarious, but engaging and well-written. Couple of recognizable actors though I can't remember their names offhand.
Well he SAID he was Gandhi and he said he preferred to drink beer because if he had to drink his own urine, why not just drink beer and combine the two? "Old Calcutta" Was his brand. But come to think of it you maybe right because he kept talking about the bar maid saying, "That's one cow I would definitely eat-up right now". And he was wearing a Seven-Eleven shirt so.....

Could care less about Zootopia - that was absolute hot garbage.
But Archer, that's just a sin to remove that show. :(
There are a couple on that list I have never watched and should. The early Pacino flick being one.
And I definitely need to rewatch Life Aquatic.
Never saw Life Aquatic. At least, not yet.
Meh, I guess it doesn't matter if Netflix drops these - there's other outlets out there.
Hulu has a surprising number of movie as well. It's not just TV series.

True, but I have Netflix so it's nice to know what is coming and going. The Times is good at picking out some gems. I had never even heard of the Brando movie.
I just started watching, "The Frankenstein Chronicles" last night. Good series so far starring Sean 'Boromir' Bean in 1825 London. Not a lot of action but a good mystery with great period scenes and a plot that has some surprises.
I saw that in the queue the other day. Will have to check it out.
I've got that one saved as well.

Interesting. I'll look for it.
If you want to soil your drawers watch Veronica on Netflix. I just did both.
If you want to get your blood pressure up, check out LA 92, a National Geographic doc on the Rodney King LA riots. I thought it was going to be a bit on the SJW-side but it turned out to portray everyone in a position of power in LA at the time in an equally terrible light.

I saw that pop up and made a mental note to watch it eventually. I like docs if they're realistic and not pandering to any one side or viewpoint. If you're recommending it I'll move it up now that Archer is gone. >:(

I watched the first three episodes last night and enjoyed them very much. Much deeper than say, Cops, and shows the struggles of policing with very limited resources. And Officer Babe....eh, Belasco....can arrest me anytime.
Just finished the first episode of Flint Town. I agree wholeheartedly. With ALL the previous statements. O0
I just finished Season 2 of Ash vs The Evil Dead and laughed like hell all the way through. The real Evil was Lucy Lawless had no nude scenes in Season 2. >:(
Finished up Flint Town - it really captures the state of the whole country, I think.
I think I've mentioned the series 'The Detectorists' before. It's quite...well, charming is the best word I can use for it. Very good writing, acting, pacing, and at times it can be quite hilarious.
Take this scene, for example...the metal detecting club decides to have an open house to hopefully bring in new members, and it goes less than stellar for them.
If you can stomach it, try the BBC documentary 1945: The Savage Peace. It is extremely brutal. Well done, but hard to say it's 'enjoyable.'
I saw 'Dad's Army' pop up in Netflix the other day. I could swear some of you had mentioned this series before but I'd forgotten about it/not seen it yet.

I'm going to check out Lost In Space now. I watched The Eagle Has Landed on Amazon Prime - first time I've seen it since high school. Then got done with Capricorn One just now, which I also haven't seen in forever. Eagle was a great movie; I'd forgotten how good it was.
I have "Eagle" on DVD. A real classic. The book is great, too.
I gave Lost In Space about 11 minutes before I went into the comments section to see what people were saying about it. I just wanted to be sure it wasn't just me, and it wasn't.

lol
An episode of Cop Rock would be more entertaining than Discovery.
I might give Lost In Space another chance. I got the feeling the lead female is a bitchy, overbearing character and the male was beat down, but a lot of comments on that show said exactly those things. I should give it more than 11 minutes before passing judgement, though, to be fair. They might have come to the same conclusion without watching more of it.
The visuals were pretty spectacular and I'm no science/engineering guy like Barth, so what do I know.
I've only watched the first episode. It wasn't great, but it was better than I expected and had enough of a hook to get me to watch more. There was plenty of melodrama and family conflicts to drive me crazy. Molly Parker's character is bitchy, but I love her as an actress so I didn't mind so much.
I'm pretty burned out on the Netflix Marvel stuff, so this might be a decent diversion.
They tried to stuff a lot of backstory into that first episode. I'm not sure that helped move things along. I'm willing to give it a few more episodes.
Started watching the Russian series Sophia on Amazon Prime.
Didn't expect much, but was surprised at the quality. The ca. 15th century Russian period scenery and costumes is impressive. Being based on historical events keeps it entertaining.
Pleasantly surprised.
Is that pre-Ivan the Terrible?
They are pushing the female lead a bit too hard and so far Dr. Smith's character is horrible.

Oh yeah, I get that. So far I like this reboot better than the original. It's just that the other characters seem to 'match' their original counterparts except Dr. Smith. Hopefully that will be corrected in the coming episodes.
^I don't know about that. I just finished Episode 2 and she seems every bit as slimy as the original.

Saw this on Amazon Prime. There's a lot of highly-rated Russian war movies on AP and this one was pretty good. (Funny how this reminds me of the opening chapters of Red Storm Rising where the intelligence officer was getting suspicious over the Soviets playing remastered patriotic movies...)
The trailer is in English, but the movie itself is Russian with English subtitles, which I prefer over dubbing any day. Well acted, decent effects, and a good story I thought.
...huh. Well the full movie is on YT, too. :D
I tried watching it a few years ago but it was just a little too ridiculous for me. I think I got to the part where the Soviets were in a swamp and the white Tiger was parked right in front of them and nobody could see it but the driver and then I turned it off.

I don't remember that bit. The gunner and loader certainly saw it several times.
I mean, yeah, it's pretty fantasy-related and the Tiger is like a ghost, but if you try not to look at it like a Barth scientist you might get enjoyment out of it. :P

Still hard to believe that much of the early part of the show's effects were done on Amigas, when the Video Toaster add-on card first brought CGI to the masses.
I never got into B5 completely, but I've always wanted to watch all of it. Nice!
I watched most of it when it was first run, but I'll be binge watching it from start to finish on Amazon.
Now Prime is worth it. :notworthy:
Sigh. Babylon 5. Was that the one about the Monty Python-like space station? You remember, Swamp Castle?
King of Swamp Castle: When I first came here, this was all swamp. Everyone said I was daft to build a castle on a swamp, but I built in all the same, just to show them. It sank into the swamp. So I built a second one. And that one sank into the swamp. So I built a third. That burned down, fell over, and then sank into the swamp. But the fourth one stayed up. And that's what you're going to get, Son, the strongest castle in all of England.
Though it apparently took five attempts for the Babylon 5 people. ::)

Talk to me after B5 has had 50 years of different movies/books/series. :P
As for TAS, a lot of the stories were really good. The animation was laughable, true. But go take a look at some of the names that wrote for it. And if you haven't read them the Star Trek Log books based on it are excellent.
And DS9 >>>> BS5 any day of the week/month/year.
Most of the Trek books are rubbish. Granted, the Diane Duane books with Ensign Horta are excellent.
Yeah, I agree about most of the Trek books being rubbish. But the Star Trek Log books by Alan Dean Foster were good.

This one took me by surprise...Amazon Prime, Last Flag Flying.
Former Navy Corps medic Richard "Doc" Shepherd (Steve Carell) re-unites with ex-Marines Sal (Bryan Cranston) and Mueller (Laurence Fishburne) because...well, it's best left to the trailer and the movie itself. Very powerful stuff and good to see Steve Carell in such an emotional role.

I thought he was, "The Lion of Zion". Maybe that was Henny Youngman.
Not a gem, but if you grew up in the 70s and loved Star Trek then you need to watch Season 2 Episode 1 Star Trek of The Toys That Made Us (https://www.netflix.com/title/80161497) on Netflix. A bit goofy but a good trip down memory lane with some interesting observations about Trek toys.
I don't have any Star Trek toys. I have a boatload of Star Trek COLLECTABLES, thank you very much.
"dolls"
"Phasers"
I watched all four seasons of Black Adder over the last week or so. Never saw it before, either. Great stuff, especially the final episode of season 4.

Also just saw the episode of 'The Toys That Made Us' dealing with Star Trek. I had that bridge set, the one with the transporter you spun around and made the action figure disappear.
I had that too. I think even still have the cassette tricorder around here somewhere.

There are a couple of extra episode, such as the Christmas Special, which are well worth watching.
I'll look for 'em, Bob - thanks! O0
Found another good South Korean movie called "Steel Rain" on Netflix. Very tense and entertaining movie about a coup in North Korea where Fat Boy gets gravely injured in a missile attack and a secret policeman smuggles him south to save his life. Things ramp up pretty quickly as this guy doesn't know whom to trust while trying to keep Fat Boy alive, otherwise war would be a guarantee. Meanwhile, the coup leaders move forward on all cylinders as they try to bring that war to reality.
Note you might have to click the CC button in the video to bring up the English subtitles, if they don't automatically appear.
Damn. Just...daaaaammmmn.
This was f'd up and outstanding.
God, Transformers The Last Knight is the dumbest pile of crap I've ever seen in my life.
Someone told me it was decent so I'm powering through it, but this is pretty damned disjointed and dumb. I think I keep watching to see how much more stupidity it will bleed. :)
I have never seen any of the Transformers movies - wasn't the first one good? I was also looking forward to the Bumblebee movie.
It was very mediocre. As are all the other ones.
This fifth one, I've not seen before. I'm a chump because I went to the theater to see the first three. Since they got more and more of a mess, I watched the fourth one offline and the fifth one just yesterday/today.
The first one is interesting just to see the CGI and effects, but I wouldn't waste my time with the rest of them, Gus. They just kept making more of them as each made about a billion dollars, especially thanks to the Asian market (giant robots are their thing apparently). This fifth one is just bad. So much shoehorning and plot holes and unconnected events...it's like watching a screenplay written by a five-year-old.
"The first military movie, made for military personnel and veterans, made by military personnel, with a cast made up of at least 75% veterans."
"There were three GWOT Medal of Honor recipients cast in this film, Clint Romesha, Dakota Meyer, and Leroy Petry, all playing themselves."
Warning: very NSFW red-band trailer. ;D
This gem is on Amazon Prime.
The best Amazon review:
QuoteAfter watching Range 15 my beard grew 8 inches, my manhood stood marble hard, and wife became pregnant, gestated for 9mos in front of my eyes, and birthed a cigar smoking, rifle carrying, whiskey swilling bald eagle. I shoot straighter, drink more, and my bench press increased by 25 lbs. That's after one viewing. If you don't enjoy this movie, you might as well join ISIS... you hate America.
???
I better not watch it. I can't deal with pregnant wives.
That trailer isn't the greatest for conveying the humor in the movie. This montage clip does a much better job:
Starring Toonces!!
I've been watching a series called Mind Hunter on Netflix and enjoying it quite a bit so far. It takes place in the 70's and tells the story of two FBI agents who developed the techniques to identify and track serial killers. Some great performances and solid writing in there. Really like the guy who plays serial killer Ed Kemper; the woman who plays the girlfriend of one of the FBI agents (great, sarcastic sense of humour), and the character of FBI agent Bill Tisch.
Great series. Can't wait for season 2 to start. O0
I finished Season 1 of Luke Cage and am almost through with Ironfist. Both are good but Cage takes home the Blue Ribbon.
Finally finished with Watchmen: Ultimate Cut on Amazon Prime late last night. Bloody thing is over 3.5 hours long, but it's oh so worth it if you're a fan of the graphic novel. The movie that came out on this wasn't all that great, but this 'ultimate cut' is VERY close to the graphic novel, including the sub-story of the shipwrecked captain. The ending is slightly different but it's pretty much the same result. Very worthwhile to check out if you have not done so yet.
Thanks for the tip B_C. I have an unwatched Watchmen DVD box set someone gifted me. I'll have to see if some of that ultimate is in there. I do know that Tales of the Black Freighter is part of it but don't know if it is anime or live action.
I've been watching Netflix's docu-drama series, "The Roman Empire: Reign of Blood" which I like a lot. The second season is about Julius Ceasar which is great. but one thing about this series that just drives me nuts is every battle scene has to be the Holloywood-esc scenes of soldiers fighting like Bruce Lee with swords. Never the more correct style of the Cohort formation, the Pilums or whatever and of course Ceasar has to be in the middle of every fight like Braveheart. :pullhair: Why do Directors do this? Is it cheaper? Or more exciting they think? Or do they just not give a damn about reality? :hide:

Disliked Iron Fist. Mr. Whiney Girley-Man.
Finished Season 2 of Luke Cage. A very un-traditional superhero ending that I'm sure if I like or hate. I'm wondering if maybe they're trying to wrap up the series? I guess when you're bullet-proof you can get away with shit.
Finished Season 2 of Iron Fist, somewhat predictable but exciting ending of a very nice series I'm surprised I've actually enjoyed. Now the kick in the nuts, Netflix has cancelled the series. :hide: How could a series about a rich white boy Kung Fu-ing Asians all over China Town NOT be a success?

Watching Mindhunter. It's effed up but well done. The same can be said of Ozark, which I just finished.
I cringe to admit this but.... I watch Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series on Netflix.
I plan to watch that too... after all, it's gotta be better than "Last Jedi"
This is true. But watching a Wookie take a dump is better than Last Jedi. :hide:

The only thing I don't like is why don't animated boobs bounce?
The Force is with them.
Force Boobs.... that could work. But does that mean, 'The Dark Side' is referring to....??? :timeout: Better leave that one alone.
I second the support for Ozark. Jason Bateman is great. I also support realistic movement of animated bewbage.
The Force keeps them steady.

So far we've watched the first 5 episodes and it's actually pretty good. Good gotcha in the 5th. Not much a horror fan but the mystery part has me hooked.
Episode 5 is very good and episode 6 is UBER CREEPY. That said, my best friend watched it full through and said the final third of the show ultimately comes off the rails and the ending is a true stinker. You've been warned. Not sure if I will invest in the final four episodes with this knowledge or not.
Thanks fer the heads up. My wife likes it so we'll be going the distance....

Netflix series Chef's Table. If you have any interest in cooking or food it's a good watch. Not that you'll end up cooking like them but it does present where they come from really well and does give some ideas.
Each episode is about a different chef.
BTW I never went back for the final four episodes of Hill House. I am horrored-out after a long lead up to Halloween, and my best friend kinda soured me on finishing it. Anyone else finish it?

Yep, right to the end. It does fade a bit after episode 6 but it was still enjoyable... ending is a little mushy but my wife liked it.
So you'd say #6 was the high point?
#5 and #6.
Got an E-Mail today from Netflix that, The Outlaw Prince begins Nov. 9th. That's a Robin Hood re-make right? BTW, Daredevil Season 3 is starting to kick ass about episode 4. :bd:
Daredevil Season 3 is the bees knees :smitten:
Vincent D'onofrio is F'ing amazing as the Kingpin.
Robin Hood you say?
Sorry, that was, The Outlaw 'King', not 'Prince'. And Kingpin is scary-bad. :notworthy:

DAMMIT! :knuppel2: Time to move on. Doesn't surprise me after Luke and Iron Fist got axed but I thought DD had a deal for another 2-3 seasons. Anybody got Disney's number?
I re-sub'd to Netflix just to watch Daredevil S3.
Ugh. Did they ditch the previous writers and hire some from the DC movies? :pullhair:
I kept stopping after every episode to take a breath and build up stamina for the next. Waiting for it to ... just get the F going. Probably broke a sighs-per-minute record from all the hero whining and poor use of D'Onofrio. Everyone's sitting on their thumbs and rotating for so long.
Was near quitting altogether, numerous times, and then shit finally started happening. And it sucked. Underwhelmed after the sixth episode, I stopped watching the season and haven't yet bothered to go back and attempt finishing.
First two seasons were wonderful. This one.. no. :hide:
Wow! :wow: I really like it, though only up to episode 7 or 8. The DD self-pity party does get old at times. Still, great fights, unexpected twists and great acting beats the hell out of anything Star Trek in the last 5 years.
I just finished DD season 3 and I thought it was good. And like season 1 it took a bit to get up to speed.
Very disappointed it was cancelled. The last scene was a great teaser for what might have come. I won't spoil it for anyone.

Yes and it works really well... if you have a the right equipment. You'll need to watch it on a newer smart TV with the latest Netflix app. OR a tablet or PC with the Netflix app. My 6 year old Sharp Smart TV wasn't able to run it but my 2 yr old Sharp in my man cave was. Netflix will let you know if you can run it.
It's interactive in that at certain points in the story you are given 2 choices and the program with follow the path you choose. But you have to choose quickly only 10 seconds or so, or a default choice is made. Choice is made with your remote or mouse.
The actual story in Bandersnatch is just OK, but works well as a demo of this type of tech. They even made the "flip back to choose a different path" thing work wreally well without it becoming ponderous to re-watch up to the decision point.
Hope they make more deeper stuff like this.
That sounds like an awesome idea for a spy thriller:
'The neighborhood looks sketchy. Do you enter the clandestine meeting place? YES / NO'
'A van full of ISI goons is chasing your car. Ahead left is the off ramp into the Old City and right is the express way to the International Airport. LEFT / RIGHT'
Oh yeah, there's lots of places they could take this. :D
Sounds like...a game 😎
I basically made at least one REALLY BAD CHOICE and it seem to throw me into a loop of sorts. I'd like to go back and watch again and try to take a different path and see what happens.
It is kind of a neat idea but it really does turn the experience into more of a game than a show.
There are some new FMV game releases out now. Makes me wanna bust out my TurboGrafx16.
There is a short (4 episode) series called Age of Tanks on Netflix. I have watched 3 of the 4 episodes - it is a German production, with English dialogue, and is fascinating. Covers the whole 20th century history of the tank and includes a lot of footage of events I have never seen before, including the Soviet incursions in to Hungary and Czecheslovakia, the 1973 Yom Kippur War (Israel/Arabs) and even a few minutes on the Tianamen Square massacre. Check it out if you have even the slightest interest in armor.
I saw it. Very good documentary series if somewhat short. The 'Medal of Honor' or 'Medal of Valor' series also has some good episodes.
'Very good if somewhat short' - just like me.
How many episodes in the Medal of Valor series?
Maybe someone has mentioned "Patriot" Dark, dry comedy about American intel ops. Well worth watching.
Eight episodes of Medal of Valor. But now that I've watched it, some other interesting stuff is coming up I've never seen before. :o
Oh yeah? Like what? We'd probably all like it unless it's some really freaky deaky stuff.
Well for instance, the movies Dirty Dozen and The Great Raid just showed-up after I watched MoV. Also a film called, "Gallipoli", no not the Mel Gibson one from back in the 80's, but a new 'reenactment film' whatever that is. Another new series called, Empires I think showed up after I watched, The Roman Empire series and I get some weird Marvel animated shows after watching anything Marvel. Why don't they just tell me what's new when it's new instead of pandering to my tastes? Did I just say that? :hide:
Everything you mentioned is in my cue too :)

Season 2 of the Punisher began last night and, DAMN, I was hooked after the first 3 min. When the first scene has Frank covered in blood, you know it's going to be GOOD. O0 Body Count First Episode: between 12 and 20 I'd say.
I'm up to episode 3. There are some damn fine looking women in this season also.

The Wife loves dogs. Our own dog is 125 pounds of dufus (Swiss Mountain Dog) and we are dogsitting her parents dog (Rottie) until April, who is 150 pounds of slobber.
True that! More of a rhetorical question really. Kind of like, "Do you enjoy going to the Dentist"?
I used to love going to the dentist because he hired hot female dental hygenists. I had one for years who would press her rack against my face every single time I was there, ostensibly to reach over me to grab some tool or something. I never complained. Somebody must have because she's been gone for a few years 😢
Smart girl. That's how they make sure you keep your mouth wide open the whole time. :bd:
Yeah it worked. She smelled like lavender and mint.
Is that what she called them? My Dental Hygenist calls her's, 'No Look' and, 'No Touch'. :-\
^You go to the wrong dentist.
I like all my doctors. I've just got to remember not to get the Dentist visits mixed-up with the Colonoscopy visits. <:-)
And we now return you to our regularly scheduled thread topic........
Just finished Punisher Season Two.
Wow.
Now I'm curious if Netflix will cancel THIS series.
I'm up to episode 4 and hope to watch a few more this weekend. I'm pretty sure Netflix will cancel it because the reviews have been very good.
True that. I hope Season 2 ends with Frank taking-out half of Netflix management( just a joke people). "I'm cancelling your season, Scumbags"! :coolsmiley:
I have to get back to Punisher. I got distracted by Chopping Mall on Prime and it immediately recommended a slew of cheesy 80s slasher movies. ???
I'm purging myself by watching Generation Kill again. I love the dialogue in this series.
Now up to Punisher S2 E6. The fight at the Russian gym was brutal. One of the most brutal fight scenes I have ever watched.
In Russian gym, you no stick landing, landing sticks you. :2funny:
Right in the damned face.
If you never saw the Punisher in Daredevil Season 2, his fight scene in the prison was a classic and so brutal it made even me shudder a couple of times. :hide:
I still need to get in the Daredevil. I meant to before The Punisher was released but well you know.
Season 2, Elektra is..... HOT!!! :dreamer:
Indeed.
Punisher S2 is a DUD!....or am I the only one who feels that way?
I'm up to the final two episodes and I think it's definitely weaker than the first season. A lot of emo hipster dialogue. 'Why am I so angry?' asks Billy Russo 3-4 times per episode.
I wish I had Frank Castle's tolerance for pain. I get a little splinter and I'm crying like a little baby back bitch :'(
Although this season is weaker than the first, it's still solid and Bernthal still portrays Jarhead...er...the Punisher, well. He is my Punisher of choice. At least better than Dolph Lundgren.

Anyone watch The Terror?
Watched "Polar" last night. It's pretty decent for those nights where sleep isn't coming to you easily. I'm a huge Mads Mikkelsen fan. Also, there is a hot chick nekkid in the movie, so that right there is Oscar worthy.
^I liked it but I watched it too soon after "Punisher". I need a break from the spurting blood. I may just watch the crackling fire video on Netflix.
You mean Polar or Terror?
Polar.
Well fine then.
My son told me Polar was outstanding. I gotta wonder how much of that is a nekkid chick and how much is actually a good movie...
Mars on Amazon Prime is pretty good. I'm only a few episodes in but it's better than most other Mars-related movies and series.
I've been re-watching Entourage...looks like I might be getting back into a bit of acting on the side.
Adult films again?
This will probably be met with incredulity but I only recently watched, "The Walking Dead" for the very first time on Netflix and, DAMN, it's great. I'm only what, 8 seasons late. :idiot2:
We are watching The Umbrella Academy on Netflix. Predictable, but good.
I hate to be the one to tell you this Slash but Walking Dead has had it's ups and downs. It's just starting to get good again after a really serious drop in quality. I almost stopped watching.
The first few seasons are great though. My favorite earlier character is Shane (Jon Bernthal).

I did say, 'some of the zombies', not all of them. Course they need a little cleaning-up, maybe run a comb through their hair, if they still have hair that is. Maybe run 'em through a car wash... several times. Think about it, no drinks to buy, no flowers, no 'then she said, then I said' conversation. Just throw some meat down in front of her and she's happy. <:-) You could do worse.
Could you?
I was going to say, "She could be dead," but...yeah.
I been out with some women that would make zombies look downright intelligent by comparison. "My Grandfather was in World War 2. Or World War 1, whichever one came second". ???

I've been perusing, "Bad Blood" on Netflix recently and damned if I'm not fully hooked. It's a based on a true story gangster series starring Kim Coats from Sons of Anarchy set in Montreal in the 90's to 2010 or so. I love mob movies and this is in the vein of 'Casino' or 'Good Fellows' but a little slower paced. Just one season so far but I hope there's more coming. O0

I stopped watching Umbrella Academy after 6 episodes. It was not that good and the plot has been predictable.
I started watching The Tick (Amazon) and it has been fabulous! I watched the first 5 episodes in one sitting. :smitten:
There's a new 3rd season of the docu-drama, 'The Roman Empire'-- Cagligula the Mad Emperor which was very good though short at only about 6 episodes.
The Wandering Earth, a Chinese big-budged sci-fi flick, just deployed to Netflix. The premise is ludicrous but the special effects are impressive. Apparently this was the second-biggest box office hit in China's history.
It's 2061, and the Sun is dying (prematurely, obviously). The Earth is going to die, too, unless something drastic happens. That 'drastic' thing is all the people of the worlds coming together and building 10,000 massive fusion-powered engines to turn Earth into one gigantic spaceship. To travel to Alpha Centauri. Yeah, but it's pretty and the action isn't bad at all.
I realize I'm VERY late to this party but I finished-up the series, 'Breaking Bad' tonight on Netflix. I gotta say TV don't get no better than this one. After a slow start I was hooked from Season 1 and it only gets better from there. First TV show in a long time that made me laugh, pissed me off, disturbed me at times, and damned-near made me cry at the end. So long Eisenburg, I will miss you. :'(
^I'm even later to the party...never seen one episode of it. I intend to watch it eventually.

This is only acceptable if you've been in solitary confinement for the last 10 years.
When it comes to shows that people insist I absolutely, positively, MUST watch, I tend to not want to watch it even more. I guess I like to zig while everyone else zags. Always kinda been that way. I'll get around to it when there's time. Like when I am old and confined to a bed. Gives me something to look forward too while I am dying.
I've been married for about 20 years. Solitary sounds pretty good!
We have just about finished all of the episodes of "Nailed It." They take three real amateur bakers, give them something next to impossible to make with a lot of intricate decoration, give them too little time to make it, and give $10,000 to the winner (often the only one who makes something edible).
Short episodes, light hearted, makes me want to make a cake with buttercream icing. Not a hard core baking show.
I watched the final episode of Giri/Haji on Netflix last night. It's an 8 part series about a Japanese detective sent to London to try and track down his brother who has ties to the Yakuza. Starts out strong but gets weaker as the series progresses. Overall, I enjoyed it because the acting was first rate and almost all of the characters (even the 'bit' players) were genuinely interesting and had a lot of depth to them. It was refreshing to see Tokyo presented in a non-fetishized way (although the Yakuza angle was cliched) and I actually found the story of the main character's wife and mother to be more interesting than that taking place in London. Worth a watch but with diminishing returns as the story progresses.
Picked up Doom Patrol Season 1 for $10 on Amazon Prime
It is hands down best thing I have watched so far in 2020
I am only 4 episodes in but it is dark, funny, poignant and has great character development.
Highly recommend
I saw a very decently done movie on Netflix last night, "The Old Guard" starring Charlize Theron. It's about a band of immortal warriors fighting to better humanity--you'd think if they had been around for a few centuries they'd know that's an exercise in futility-- while staying one step ahead of all of humanity who's trying to catch them to learn their secrets. It had some great fight scenes and apparently Theron does most of her's herself. Based on a graphic novel it maybe turned into a Netflix series if it's a hit. I liked it.

My wife loved it. I found the plot a bit too chaotic.
The Outpost on Netflix. A very good war film about the Battle of Kamdesh or Outpost Keating if you're familiar. Slow start with a bunch of soldiers you can tell apart using the, 'F' word a lot. But it kicks into high gear when the fighting starts with some very realistic battle scenes, and more, 'F' words. About 2 hours but peaks toward the end. Not really either pro or anti-war overall, decent acting, and good action. Based on a book about the fight by Jake Tapper, I think. Anyway, a good film to watch but obviously, 'R' rated. O0
A bit of a necro-bump here; I don't spend a lot of time in this part of the forum.
I did a search and only saw some brief mentions of a movie on Amazon Prime called, Downfall. I just watched it tonight and it is absolutely fantastic. I very, very highly recommend it.
It is apparently a true story based on the experiences of a young German secretary who served Hitler during the last weeks of the Third Reich up until Germany surrendered. The movie is completely in German with English subtitles, but somehow I felt it made the movie even better. The actor that portrays Hitler is absolutely brilliant.
I felt the movie really did a fantastic job of portraying Hitler's insanity towards the end regarding the military situation, as well as his declining mental capacity; it also captured the nature of his lieutenants very well also, the difficulties they had making Hitler understand the reality of the situation along with their loyalty to him, and the conflict that had with the reality that the war was lost.
It's a bit of a downer, so not something to watch with the wife if you're looking to score that evening.
Sadly, the movie is better known for the rant scene being used to brilliant effect with subtitles. Some of them are absolutely hilarious.
Oooohhhh.....ah, man I'm dumb sometimes. Yes, I've seen the rant meme and now I get it LOL.
I can't believe I didn't make the connection. :-[

Brother!
Bruno Ganz is amazing in Downfall.
I watched the first episode of, "Age of Samurai: The Battle for Japan" on Netflix last night. A not-too-terrible docu-drama about the Sengoku Period in Japan. I had not seen anything about it prior to going to Netflix last pm, so it hit me as a real surprise. I couldn't find a series trailer to post but it wasn't half-bad. And it made me want to play Shogun 2 all over again. #:-)
^That popped up in my feed too, looks pretty good.
Behind Her Eyes is also very good and watchable with wives/girlfriends/pets/significant others.
I watched
The Vast of Night on Amazon Prime a few days ago. It takes place in a small town in New Mexico in the 50s. Two high school kids, one who works at the radio station and one who runs the telephone switchboard, stumble across a weird signal and decide to investigate. If you like shows and films about the paranormal like the Super 8, or the X-Files or The Twilight Zone, you should enjoy this one.
https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_vast_of_night (https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_vast_of_night)
It's low budget but the acting is top notch and the director did a fantastic job in bringing the town to life. The attention to detail is fantastic and some of the camerawork is amazing. There's one long tracking shot that basically runs through the entire town. I have no idea how they filmed that but it was pretty cool to see.
The story is a slow burn and the payoff could have been better but if you're in the mood for some old timey nostalgia mixed in with a bit of a sci-fi/horror/mystery vibe, it's a good choice.
Don't know if you can stream in the US but I'm watching this on DVD :
Our Girl (BBC series following female medics in the British Army) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3815412/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0
I finished-up, "Age of Samurai: The Battle for Japan" last night, only 6 episodes. Great little series that I enjoyed a lot. Kind of low-budget but the story was what really sold the show and it did not disappoint. Definitely NOT a, 'shamefurl dispray'. O0
Low budget eh? Looks slick from the trailers...maybe my standards are low.
Low budget as in very few reactors in the battle scenes and frequently the same scenes used over and over. But the story more than makes-up for it.
Ah ok. I have been looking to watch The King on Netflix as well as The Block Island Sound.
Just finished Lupin which was fantastic and am just about to finish up Capitani which is also very good.
If you guys haven't seen, or gave up on Breaking Bad, you are seriously missing out. I agree with Slash wholeheartedly; TV doesn't get much better than that. Fran, it gets much darker and more disturbing after the part where you quit watching. I'm calling it an absolutely must-watch. I was pretty late to the show, but once I started I was totally hooked. Very much a "just one more episode" and "I can't take anymore!" show.
For sure Toonces. And don't forget the BB movie they did to close-out Jesse's story line, "El Camino". Great stuff. A little less excellent was the prequel series, "Better Call Saul" which had less action but still managed to be entertaining. :notworthy:
My wife and I just finished two seasons of "Ragnarok" on Netflix.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9251798/ (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9251798/)
A Norwegian series about a high school kid who finds out he is the modern day "Thor" who is fated to battle the giants who run the town.
The series is quirky...the English dubbing is not that great so we listened to the original Norwegian with English subtitles. The story also gets a little slow in places. But overall we loved it. The show is pretty low budget, but in a good way. It shows how you don't need tons of CGI to tell the story of Norse gods vs. giants.
I don't think "Ragnarok" it is everyone's cup of tea.... more drama and character development than action. But we really liked it.
I watched about half of, "Company of Heroes" on Netflix last night. Must be based on one of the computer/console games as it's quite implausible but entertaining never the less. A WWII romp with lots of evil Nazi's and firefights about every 3 min. What else you gonna watch on a Monday? :coolsmiley:
El Camino was really good, agree with you Slash.
I haven't started Better Call Saul, yet, but I do plan to watch it eventually.
Just a head's up on a few other shows I've seen on Netflix lately.
I watched a show called
Squid Game a few weeks ago before I found out it's a worldwide sensation. It is kinda weird and the acting is a bit over-the-top, especially by one of the female characters. You'll know which one I mean. Still, I found the show somehow compelling and ended up finishing it. I'm giving it a high recommendation. It's just really unusual.
I also watched a movie called
The Platform. It is one of the most interesting and unique premises for a movie I've ever seen. I loved it right up to the very end, which I didn't like at all. So I watched it a second time to see what I missed and if I liked the ending better the second time around. I didn't. My son and I looked it up on Google to find out what the meaning of the ending was, and it turns out the symbolism in the movie is a lot more prevalent than I picked up on. It didn't make me like the end better, but at least now I understand it. I give it two thumbs up and very highly recommend it and maybe you'll like the ending better than I did. Warning: it's pretty dark and violent, not a movie you necessarily want to watch on date night if you're looking to score that evening.
Squid Game is interesting.

I started watching Better Call Saul last week and just finished up Season 1 last night. I am really enjoying it! No, it's not quite as good as Breaking Bad, but I am very impressed how the writers created these backstories for all of the Breaking Bad characters that integrate so well into that show. Saul kinda reminds me of The Witcher; always trying to do the right thing in these morally ambiguous situations.
Watched the first 4 episodes of season 1 of Squid Games over the weekend. I'm liking what I see so far.
^Just watched the first two Squid Games episodes last night. It goes from odd to bizarre to brutal in like three minutes!
^Yes it does! Although the story telling is not as well done as say "The Sopranos" it is engaging enough.
^ Funny you mention The Sopranos. I've just started rewatching the series after the release of the prequel tie-in movie Many Saints of Newark. Unfortunately, that movie was quite a stinker. Clunky and incoherent plot and very little approaching an actual story arc. Just felt like a bunch of mobster scenes and Sopranos callbacks loosely strung together. Leslie Odom's character barely had any impact on the story despite being built up as an antagonist. Alessandro Nivola and Michael Gandolfini were definitely the highlights, and the action scenes were well done, but it was completely let down by a lousy script. Strange because David Chase managed to churn out pretty good content for years, but this one is a total miss.
^ I didn't know what to expect but enjoyed Many Saints. The one scene towards the end on the beach was equally f'd up and great.
^^Yeah I've been seeing a lot of ads for the new Sopranos movie. Thanks for the movie assessment. Too bad it was not that great.
Speak of the devil (literally >:D) former mafioso Michael Franzese just posted a video review of
Many Saints, and holy hell does he rip into it and David Chase.
EDIT - Dang, he REALLY rips into this one... Calls it one of the worst movies he's ever seen. I lol'ed at the part where he says "You don't need to portray mobsters as degenerate scumbags to make them look bad, they already make themselves look bad enough!"
Man, you know I've never seen the Sopranos? :wow: I'd really like to watch the series now, but I don't have HBO.
On a separate but related note, I finished all four seasons of Better Call Saul last night. I really, really enjoyed it. BUT, why didn't you tell me that there's a fifth season that's not on Netflix!? I'm watching those last two episodes and saying to myself, there is no way they can wrap up all these story lines in two more shows. Then the last show I'm thinking, there sure is a lot of ground they're going to need to cover in one hour to wrap this season up. By halfway through I realized no way this was the final episode and I'd been duped.
Grrrr..... :knuppel2:
I can't remember how many seasons I watched on Netflix and then just picked it up on FX, I think? There's supposed to be one more season coming but I haven't heard when. And there'll still be a bunch of storylines to finish-up when they do. BTW, I've never seen the Sopranos either except for a few episodes.
On the flip-side, I'm really liking, "Medici The Magnificent" series on Netflix. Very well done with lots of plot twists and suspense. Not a lot of action though, but great scenery and medieval sets looking like Florence, and on-going cameos by Dustin Hoffman no less. Kind of like The Last Kingdom without the cool Viking battles.
Couple of good Netflix movies I've recently watched:
Death to 2021. It's basically a parody of a lot of the stuff that happened in 2021 (Covid, Jan 6, etc). It features a bunch of comedians. I thought it was hysterical and highly recommend. It's one hour, so a quick watch.
War Machine. I'd never heard of this and watched it on a whim last night. It stars Brad Pitt as GEN Stanley McChrystal and is based on a book that was based on a Rolling Stone article that led to McChrystal's firing from ISAF. I really enjoyed it. It really shows what a complete CF Afghanistan is/was.
Dont look up was good.

I enjoyed it too. Did you watch the scene that comes after the credits?
Watched an...interesting....movie night before last called
There Will Be Blood. It kept popping on my recommendations so I finally sat down to see what the fuss was about.
It's a hard movie to describe. The only movie I can think of that I've seen that was similar (and it's a stretch) is
The Power of the Dog.
The premise of the former is the main actor is an oil speculator and while he starts out good, eventually he becomes corrupted and deceptive, and I guess goes completely bat-shit crazy at the end. The music is unusual and the way it's shot is kinda artsy-fartsy, but not in a bad way. I recommend it.
Ruthless silver miner, turned oil prospector, Daniel Plainview moves to oil-rich California. Using his adopted son to project a trustworthy, family-man image, Plainview cons local landowners into selling him their valuable properties for a pittance. However, local preacher Eli Sunday suspects Plainviews motives and intentions, starting a slow-burning feud that threatens both their lives. And speaking of
The Power of the Dog, that was another movie that I can't say 100% that I liked. Well, that's not fair, I liked it, but I found it a challenging movie to understand. There was a lot going on and a lot of layers to unpack. I'm not even sure how to describe the premise so I'll borrow from the internet:
Charismatic rancher Phil Burbank inspires fear and awe in those around him. When his brother brings home a new wife and her son, Phil torments them until he finds himself exposed to the possibility of love.I don't want to post any more because part of the beauty of the plot is having no idea where it's going, or how it ends. I recommend it, but it might be more of a date night movie if your spouse is into deep, complex love stories.
There Will Be Blood is a modern masterpiece and a perfect film. An absolute master class in acting, editing, and cinematography. The unusual choices for music and shot compositions are part of the genius IMO, and there are some pretty good analysis videos (like I've linked below) that delve into the film's many layers. It's very much a character study of a sociopathic conman, and on that note I'd argue Plainview was never really "good," but early on he showed signs of being at least redeemable.
Never seen Power of the Dog but that looks quite interesting as well.
If you loved There Will Be Blood that much then I'm sure you'll love The Power of the Dog. It has that indie/Sundace Film Festival ambience.
There Will Be Blood is epic, I love that movie. Daniel Day Lewis is just unreal.
The Wife and I both enjoyed Don't Look Up too.
I thought, "There Will Be Blood" was WAY overrated. Watching Lewis turn into a raving lunatic wasn't much fun. I liked him a lot better cutting people up in Gangs of New York. O0
Gangs of New York was a great film!
I love Gangs of New York - it is very cartoony, however. When I first saw it was hoping for something a little more like Once Upon a Time in America.
I just finished watching an hysterical comedy special on Netflix:
Jim Gaffigan: Comedy MonsterIt's geared more towards adults, but it's PG-14, no cursing or otherwise unsuitable humor for children so you can watch it in mixed company. Some of the jokes won't make sense to a 14 year old, though.
Very, very highly recommended! :bd:
So I watched a Jim Gaffigan special with my wife the other night (Beyond the Pale) and she hated it while I loved it. So...his humor isn't for everyone I guess.
Wife and I watched a very good movie on Hulu Saturday night called
Mother/Android. Best way to describe it is The Walking Dead with androids instead of zombies. It's kinda a bummer movie, but we both quite enjoyed it. Two thumbs up.
^Jesus Christ
Watched the movie "Blood Red Sky" on Netflix. Without giving away too much of the plot it's basically "vampires on a plane."
Anyway, fantastic movie...plenty of great plot twists...the "bad guys" are not always obvious, and the movie is not what you would think...
BTW, it is a German movie, with some English actors speaking English, but mostly subtitled.
^Sounds...interesting, thanks.
I just finished the 6 part series, "Rise of Empires: Ottomans", about the conquest of Constantinople. It was mildly entertaining but well done, kind of low budget but it had it's moments.
Cracked on a few shows with Mrs. Toonces last weekend.
First up: The Girl in the Window across the Street from the Woman in the House (Netflix). I did not care for it, although Kristen Bell :smitten: . My wife thought it was hysterical. Hard to describe, kind of a parody of thriller movies, but not nearly as slapstick as Scream. It wasn't horrible; Kristen really makes it bearable. But, meh. We binged the whole first season in about 2.5-3 hours, so not the hugest time-sink.
We've also started watching The Gilded Age (HBO Max), mostly because my wife used to manage one of those houses in Newport, and she's into that Downton Abbey type stuff. Again, not horrible (but not boss, either) but if your wife/partner is into those kind of chick shows, this one is tolerable enough to watch and get the goody points rather than something like Sex in the City or Real Housewives.
A recent oldie for me, just started watching Ozark (Netflix). Got two episodes in, and I'm full in. I'm like the last person in the world who hasn't seen it, kinda like Breaking Bad. It's like BB, but it seemed to me a bit (lot) faster to get into the hardcore stuff. Breaking Bad was kinda funny for a while; Ozark starts out dark and doesn't seem to get lighter so far. Recommended highly for now.
Edit: Wife just reminded me. We also watched a show that I'm pretty sure stars the same actor that was in the Mother/Android movie, called Euphoria (HBO Max). This one kind of disturbed us both, and we only got one episode in before we moved on to lighter fare. It's very, very dark and not a good-mood show, about young teenagers doing drugs, having sex, getting raped, and be all-around fucks. And the chicks get naked a lot and are very young and it's altogether kinda uncomfortable to watch, like watching teen pr0n with your spouse. I've read it gets very good, but so far I'm not sure it's a keeper for us. With two children right in that demographic, it's maybe too close to real-world to be fun.

Overall, great series and fun to watch. I did start to get a little bit of "fatigue" going into the 4th season...but that happens with me and any series.
Definitely - it takes dedication for these modern season-spanning series, even if they are excellent. There's just so much choice out there it is hard to even remember what exists sometimes.
For me, Vikings went downhill after Ragnor got thrown in the snake pit. Just not the same after. The last Kingdom got better with each new season though Season 4 was a little out-of-step I thought. I'll give Valhalla a shot, not much else to choose from. :-\
^That's the exact spot for me too. The scene with him in the pit was great and then I just lost interest. The series should have probably ended there.
In the actual Viking sagas and even in some Anglo-Saxon stories the whole 'Ragnar getting thrown in the pit, causing his sons to form the Great Army and invade England' thing is more like the beginning of the story rather than the end. In a way, most of Ragnar's life shown in the tv series is backstory filling in before the 'historical' main event.
I didn't get much of the story. I bought the director's cut on Blu-Ray : it cuts all scenes without Lagertha :dreamer:.
Everything without Lagertha is just fluff anyway.
I am learning a lot from this thread on Viking history. I have a book that I am reading very soon on the Great Viking Army and did not know that Ragnar's death was the beginning of that.
Thanks 'Wing!

Yellowjackets (Showtime) is airing on TV tonight. Many people seem to like it a lot. No streaming service has it in my country so linear viewing is the only solution. Worth it ?
Friends of mine have been raving about Yellowjackets and demand that I watch it...I haven't yet.
I took-in, "The Power of the Dog" on Netflix tonight cause I saw it was nominated for an Oscar. What a waste of 2 hours. Beautiful scenery and Benedict Cumberbatch couldn't save this film with no real plot, no action, humor, or suspense. A slight kick at the end came way too late make it worth the wait. 4 Outta 10, and I'm being kind here. :coolsmiley:

While I liked it and would recommend it....it kind of reminded me of a super-hero movie. Or, one of those old Schwarzenegger flicks. Reacher is basically a one-man army. So I found it hard to take too seriously. I'd say 7 out of 10, my wife would go higher...but probably only because Reacher walks around without a shirt at least once in every episode.

Just watched "Winter on Fire" from Netflix.
Documentary about the Ukraine 2014 Maidan revolution. Very moving. Helps explain the ferocity of the Ukrainians in defending themselves.
All of the above
watching now, hope it trends to the top 10.

I watched a Beeb doc a while back about Afghanistan and its history of being invaded by colonial powers. The interviewer asked an Afghani why they were so ferocious in defending themselves. That is just so patronising - I've seen no docs where someone has questioned why Britain fought off Germany in 1940 or indeed how the US responded to the attack on Pearl Harbour.

"Winter on Fire" is not patronizing. If anything it is inspiring.
^+1
I caught the first episode of, "Vikings Valhalla" on Netflix tonight. Not great but not bad either. I'll definitely stick around for more Hot Viking Babes with swords and Battle Axes. Anybody else watching?
I will be soon. There are hawt valkyries in this one too?
Watched the whole Valhalla series over the weekend, I like when they release all episodes. For me it was typical Vikings, watchable but nothing unexpected or great. It felt maybe a little too much the same but for all know maybe that is historically accurate.
I'm on episode 5 of a show on Netflix called, To the Lake. It's a Russian show, dubbed into English (sort of like Squid Game with Korean-English). If that doesn't bother you, then I'm giving it a very high recommendation. The premise is a plague erupts in Russia and it turns into a Day Z situation, but without the zombies (so far). The chicks are all Russian and super hot, and there's a satisfying amount of skin. Oh, and the acting is pretty good, too.
Only one season that I can see, so it might be an ongoing show.
Each episode is about an hour long, so there's still a lot to get through in just what's currently available.
Just finished watching Book of Boba Fett on Disney +
What a show. Good stuff. I hate Cad Bane.
Cad Bane is awesome. the character was kind of wasted in BOBF.

Definitely agree. But what he did in BOBF kind of really pissed me off. I won't get into details so as not to spoil the story.
Maybe they should do a series on Cad Bane. His shrewd mind and his fighting skills really need to be showcased more than they were in BOBF.
I just got notified that Season 5 of, 'The Last Kingdom' is now available on Netflix. :D This is the final season and I'm kind of afraid to watch it end. :'(
Watching the first episode of To The Lake right now...very good. Super hawt womenz. If I weren't so sick of Russians and pandemics and sick Russians, I would love it even more. Will definitely watch it to the end.
I just watched the whole series today... really well done, but a lousy way to end it. IMDB does indicate they are making series 2 right now, so hopefully Netflix will continue to carry it.
edit... and I just saw that Netflix suspended all productions in Russia last week. Don't know if To The Lake is included in that, but even if series 2 does finish production it doesn't appear Netflix will carry it any time soon.
^ I just finished it. I thought there were 9 episodes, so through the whole last episode I was thinking there was one more. Damn, what a cliff-hanger ending!
This show was simply fantastic. I enjoyed it thoroughly, and there was none of that "why in the world did that character do that?" nonsense like you see in some shows; like that commercial where the kids all decide to hide from the killer in the shed full of axes and such. Everything seemed plausible to me.
I sure hope there's a season 2 at some point. The premise is fantastic, the acting is solid, and man alive, Ira is exactly my type! :smitten:
Just finished all 4 seasons of Ozark on Netflix. Very, very highly recommended. If you liked Breaking Bad you'll like Ozark. It's about a guy who launders money for a Mexican Cartel, but ends up getting in way, way over his head, similar to BB.
There's a part 2 to season 4 due to drop soon, so while the series isn't yet complete, it should be soon. I can't imagine a season 5 with the way things are progressing.
^+1 for Ozark. And if you can't get enough Jason Bateman, try his SmartLess podcast with him, Wil Arnett and Sean Hayes. Absolutley great interviews with all kinds of people like Dave Grohl, Eddie Vedder, Paul McCartney and a lot of others.
Watched the first episode of Moon Knight....
Interesting movie about Admiral Yamamoto's attempt to stop spending on super-battleships instead of aircraft carriers.
The story is fictionalized, but still interesting if you have interest in the WWII Japanese Navy. But for those looking for more generic WWII fare...probably not worth catching.
The movie is "The Great War of Archimedes" and is available for free (with commercials) on the Tubi streaming service.

^Nice, thanks.
Just finished all six episodes of "The English" on Prime.
Interesting BBC take on the Old West.
The series is part BBC drama, part Spaghetti Western...complete with a bad guy who fires a Gatling Gun from his horse.
Here is the trailer:

Great photography, locations, acting and script. Plenty of blood, gunfights, and knife fights. Some might find character development a bit much. By that I mean a lot of long philosophical bantering between characters from time to time; kind of like a Tarantino movie. The main characters are likeable and the bad guys are pretty bad.
My wife loved it. I liked it.
I think it is a good one to watch with your significant other. A nicely done platonic love story with tear-jerking ending.
The story seems disjointed, hard-to-follow and strange at first...but it all gets tied up nicely in the end.
I watched a very good movie on a streaming service called "Crackle" last night. Midnight Express.
It's based on a true story about an American kid, early 20's, who gets busted in Turkey trying to smuggle hash to the U.S. He gets thrown into a Turkish prison, and they decide to "make an example of him." A very young Randy Quaid is in it as well.
I had heard of it years ago, but never watched it until I randomly came across it. I highly recommend it.
One of the best quotes/skits from Cable Guy is from Midnight Express...'Oh Billy!!!'

Nice, thanks.
Great series of WWI / WWII documentaries on youtube called War Factories. Kind of the 'next level' of detail in war documentary land.
They cover some pretty interesting / often overlooked detail about the 'back end' of war efforts.
Such as the fact that Opel, the German truck producer was owned by the US' General Motors at the break out of WWII.
There are probably 30 of these documentaries on YouTube. Just do a search for "War Factories" on YouTube.
Some examples
Just got notification that Netflix will carry one of my all-time favorites, "Band of Brothers" on Sept. 15th. And, "The Pacific" soon to follow. I know, they're both old as dinosaur shit but I love 'em and can't wait to see them again with :pizza[1]: and a :beermug[1]:
Finally found the Steve Canyon thing on Amazon prime (previously did not show up in my searches) and saved an actual link:

Forgive me if this has been posted for already. I'll be honest, not going to read through 46+ pages to check.
Anyways, anyone watch "What we do in the shadows" on Hulu?

Absolutely love it. Loved the original movie, loved the offshoot Wellington Paranormal series, and love the rebrand current series. Brilliant stuff.
"Sea Patrol" on Amazon Prime is much to my liking.
Australian military series. Starts off more milsim like, turns a bit into Miami Vice in the late seasons.
