Title: Slow website
Post by: JudgeDredd on February 20, 2018, 08:13:39 AM
Hi

Just thought I'd let you know that when I'm typing a post, it seems to pause (or freeze) occasionally whilst typing and then catches up...putting the characters in that I've typed but didn't show.

I've only noticed this recently. It's happening on my work PC and home PC and very intermittent.

Is it in the movie or music voting threads? That's the only place I'm seeing it and I know it's from all the youtube links.

I have seen this too...actually happening right now with this post.  I never go in those other posts you mention.

I'll take a look at it later this morning after I've got kids to school and job calls handled.  I've noticed some slowness when on my phone, but it was affecting other sites, too and not just GH, so I thought it was the phone.

Not sure if it helps in your investigation, but I am using Chrome from my desktop computer on Windows 10.

No problems from my home or work machines this morning.

For anyone who is having trouble with sight speed, please humor me and go hit a couple of articles on the front page (yeah, yeah...) and leave a comment or two, even if they are not immediately approved to appear. That will help me narrow down whether it is the entire site, or forum specific

No. It happened as I was writing the original post here (and is now) and also in the Computer Gaming forum...basically wherever I go

(Like Gus...oops - meant Grim - sorry Gus), I'm using Chrome on Windows 7 (at work and home)

I just went on the main page (who knew Unicorns were real?) and typing there was fine.

I'm running the DB backups now before I start on the maintenance processes

We'll see if that helps.

Even if it doesn't, it's been a while and I need to do them

Just had some slowness as JD describes in the pc gaming thread, but I would blame my phone quicker than the site.

I've had some slowness issues at times the last 2-3 weeks.  But I always assumed it was something with either my PC and or internet connection causing it.

What I usually saw was the first few seconds were slow/delayed display of what I was typing.  Then it would catchup and would be fine.

I'm usually using edge on Win10.

BTW, if you've completed you DB maintenance, then things are running very fast now.

Whenever I go into Reply mode, Chrome starts jittering between using 5-10% CPU. I don't know if that's linked to the speed - but it seems odd.

Though maybe not - maybe that's just the emoticons

This post has been absolutely fine. When I was replying in the Religion/politics forum, it was really bad.
Title: Re: Slow website
Post by: JudgeDredd on February 20, 2018, 03:51:47 PM
So I was posting in the R&P forum in Chrome and it was terribly slow. Sometimes typing half a dozen words before they actually showed.

Using IE, I had no issues.

This thread now seems to be OK (in Chrome)

I've had the same issues as JD.  Having them now as a matter of fact.  I've also had the emojis show up at the bottom of the last slot in a poll, obscuring the choices for votes, time run, and whether or not to see the votes.  Thought it was just my machine.
Title: Re: Slow website
Post by: trailrunner on February 20, 2018, 07:48:05 PM
I use a government computer on a government network all day.  That is the definition of slow.  If I'm typing an email, and another email comes in, my email program stops working for about a minute.  That's when it's working well.  Lately it's been much worse.  We keep getting these emails from IT that there are unplanned issues with the network.  No kidding.
Title: Re: Slow website
Post by: JudgeDredd on February 22, 2018, 06:23:12 AM
This is still an issue - really bad at times and not so at others (perhaps specific threads...don't know).

I mentioned using Chrome...so I will exclusively post using IE for the time being and see if it is a Chrome thing.
Title: Re: Slow website
Post by: mirth on February 22, 2018, 06:29:15 AM
I'm guessing it is browser related. Didn't Chrome just get a big update including some built in adblocker? Wouldn't be surprised if it is related to that.

I view the site on Mac and PC, both at home and at work, and I haven't had any problems this week. I use Firefox exclusively though.

The only time I have any kind of issue is in my phone and that's always due to a crappy connection.
Title: Re: Slow website
Post by: Gusington on February 22, 2018, 08:49:11 AM
Same for me. My phone is slowest, 99% of the time because of the connection. On my iPad I use Safari and have no issues. On my PC I use Chrome and hardly ever have a problem. Have only experienced what you guys have described above once this week, on my phone, and that was three days ago. So...wtf is going on?

I use Internet Explorer and have not had any problems here. I do have problems with Windows 10 when it automatically updates it screws up my HDMI video connections resulting in a split screen effect. Reversing the HDMI cables and refreshing the settings on my monitor clears it up but I had to figure that out on my own as the local computer people had never heard of it happening before. It always occurs just after Windows 10 updates and is damned frustrating.  :knuppel2:

Sir Slash, next time that happens try pressing Win+Ctrl+Shift+B. That should restart the graphics driver (the screen will go black for a second). I don't know if it will work or not but it's worth a try.

So I've been using IE all day and I didn't have a problem.

Not 5 minutes ago, I used Chrome to reply the the Consolidate Gun Control thread and it was a nightmare. At one point it took over a minute to display the 6 words I had typed.

I'm currently suspecting Chrome is the issue. I haven't noticed the problem on other sites, though I don't post on many other sites.

And I'm using Chrome currently and noticing the issue again - though not as bad as earlier.

For awhile, Firefox had big problems with memory leaks. It's much better now than a couple years ago.

I use Chrome and Firefox together at work (two screens with each running on one). I only use Firefox at home.

I'm having something of the same issue, JD. For a few weeks now.

Sometimes the typing gets intermittent in that it takes a few seconds before what I'm typing/clicking actually appears, but more often it just sits there and does absolutely nothing.

I've found if I click in another tab and then click back, whatever I've typed appears. Since I'm aware of this, I'll start typing a sentence or two and nothing appears, but then I click out and back in again and poof, it's all there as if everything's normal.

That doesn't always work though. I'll start typing and after a few seconds the page will jump halfway down. I have to scroll back up and click in the message box, which does not always work and sometimes takes multiple tries.

It's driving me nuts. I had to switch over to Firefox where I don't see any problems typing for the moment.

Chrome.

It's only been an issue in the last two, three weeks or so for me.

Using Firefox now for GH and no problems. I'll never use IE though. I'd rather go back to my 1200 baud modem and dial up BBS sites from that huge book that listed all the numbers back in the day.

I think it is safe to say I use the forums more than anyone and I have not had any of these problems with Firefox on Win7 machines or Mac. Nor has it been a persistent problem on my Android phone.

Sounds like Chrome is borked. I only use Chrome for specific work stuff, not for routine browsing.

Mate, just switch over to Firefox. That'll alleviate all of your pain instantly.

Check your version of Chrome, too, and see if it's due for an update.

The latter worked for me...so too did the former, before I was made aware that there was an update for Chrome.

Are you still using Chrome, JD? Have you tried using Firefox instead?

Honestly - just look at the fucking state of my last post - that's what oi have to deal with and editing is even more painful.

Are you sure your on the latest version of Chrome?  Before getting the latest, I had the same issues as you.  But ever since I installed the most current version, everything has returned back to normal.  Go to help->about and make sure you have minimally this version....

Version 65.0.3325.146

Just a note to others- to have Chrome check for updates go to the menu section, click 'help' and then 'about Chrome'.

That did it for me.  I wasn't current, but now that I am, everything is smooth.

Because the reason I moved to chrome was Google pulled HD support for images for IE - I don't really want to go to another one

Just testing and it seems much better for me after updating Chrome.  No more lag in the Reply window.  :)
