Title: 2015 Grogheads Fantasy Football Leagues
Post by: Bison on July 24, 2015, 08:42:50 PM
OK Gents it's that time of year again.  The Groghead Fantasy Football leagues are now open and the invites were sent out to the managers of last years teams.

Rookie League - Auto Draft.

If you do not want to play this year just ignore the invite, but a message here would be nice so either Metaldog or myself can delete your team and a new manager can join take your place.

Pro League - Keeper League and Live Draft tentatively looking at an August 30th  or September 6th draft date.

Same as above if you don't want to play just say so here and we will open your team to the first available manager.  Right now we are at 8 teams and can expand to 12 if we have Grogheads interested in joining the league, but we need to expand by even numbers.

I'll give managers from last year a couple of weeks to decide if they want to play.  If a team in the Rookie league is not renewed, MD or I will delete the team and post the join URL here for anyone to join the league.  The Pro League will get a little more time to decide and then MD and I will open up the league to new managers or an expansion of teams.

I don't remember all of the details from last year but I believe we kept 2 players and the moved up one draft slot from the previous year.  So a player drafted in the 4th round would take your 3rd round selection this year.  No 2 players can be selected in the same round unless some sort of crazy trade is involved.

Good luck and Go....

Sticky Please.

Sweet! Both leagues re-entered.

I can't remember how to look up the previous year's draft so I can figure out who would cost me what picks to keep.

I suck at this and usually give up mid-season because my team is terrible.

...okay, my team is usually terrible because I totally forget to set my line-ups. I hardly ever watch football anymore. :(

Hover over the draft tab at the top of the screen and it'll give you a drop down menu.  At the very bottom is last years draft which shows you the drafts for all players and teams.

So does this mean you are in and are going to manage a shitty team or your out and give up on your shit team and the fun?  :D

I can only join with my shitty Pro League team and not in the Rookie League, apparently. I only received an invite for the Pro League. Not that it matters, I'll just keep it at this unless you need warm bodies in the other one.

Well let me look at the Rookie league.  It might not have sent out invites.

It said invites went out and 3 managers already joined.  Maybe it got lost in the intrawebs near Albuquerque.

No issue with you joining Kushan.  We are waiting on two managers to renew from last year, so if one doesn't you'll be promoted to manage that team.  If both players return, then we'll need a second manager to join.  We need even number of teams for the league to draft.  I hope this all makes sense.

Completely understandable. We have the same issues with our office league.

If you choose a player who you didn't draft last year as a keeper what round pick does it cost you?
Title: Re: 2015 Grogheads Fantasy Football Leagues
Post by: Bison on August 03, 2015, 05:44:13 PM
It costs one round up from where he was selected last year.  So a 4th round is a 3d round or a 8th round is a 7th round pick.

I'd have to look at last year's thread, but I think we used some delicious concoction of previous year's draft average in yahoo drafts.  And to be honest, I don't think anyone had a keeper that they hadn't drafted the previous year.

There are a number of players who ended up on rosters that you might want to keep on the cheap. Nobody drafted Odell Beckham, Justin Forsett or Ben Rothlisburger for example.

OK.  I'm getting off my ass this week at some point and setting up the Pro League Draft.  It'll be 5 SEP at 1900, if I can reserve the slot.

Draft is set for 5 September at 1900 so set your clocks!  The keeper selection is cut off on 3 September.  Undrafted players will be slotted in the projected draft round since their is no real good way to deal with them.  So Forsett would be a 3rd round selection.

I need everyone to list your keepers here please.  I'm having trouble seeing them for some reason.

So if the ADP is given as 43.9 is that a 4th or 5th round pick? Are we using a 10 team round or a 8 team round?

Did you draft Ben last year?  If so, then he will cost you one round ahead of where you drafted him.  Otherwise it'll be based simply on the average round selected in similar leagues on yahoo.

Doesn't matter who I keep. They'll just get hurt.

Case in point, I selected Arian Foster as a keeper. And what happens? The Ickey Woods Syndrome. It's dogged me for friggin' years.

I picked him up as a FA. I think his ADP is 43.something on the pre-draft rankings but that is for standard 10 team leagues. We have 8 teams so 43 ADP would be a 5th rounder pick in our league. Would I lose a 4th rounder if I kept him?

If you hover over the draft tab, you will see an option for last years draft.  That will tell you what round you selected your players and then you just drop them down one round and that is the slot they will be assigned to this year.

Beckham was a free agent pick up. How did we decide that worked?

And I see there are nine teams in the rookie league. Truthfully, I'd rather just play in the Pro League this year but I didn't want to leave a hole in the league. Soooo.......is there a 10th team coming and would it hurt any feelings if I just played in the Pro?
Title: Re: 2015 Grogheads Fantasy Football Leagues

I should be able to just pull your team out from the Rookie League Steelie.

Luck - 2nd Round
Dez - 1st Round
O'Dell - 1st Round

The way non-drafted players works in our league is I just think of them as free agent signings, so they go into the draft round where they are averaging on Yahoo drafts.   Not perfect but it's the only way that I can think of that assigns them fair market value as a "free agent" pick up.

3rd mock draft.  Same as before, but picking 5th this time.  Figured I should at least take a look at what each general area (top, middle, bottom) looks like.  There's some picks I don't like.  DeSean Jackson...who's going to throw him the fucking ball?!  LeGarrette Blount...I like him in an offense that's going to give him 20 touches every week.  So, just about any offense EXCEPT NE's!  I picked up Woodhead in that spot as I saw the SD/SEA game yesterday and SD has several packages for Woodhead and he always seemed to make something happen when he was on the field.  WR is deep.  And I got the three deep(er) guys that I like this year, John Brown, Kendall Wright and Marvin Jones.  Got stepped in front of on a lot of guys and had to settle for different players or positions.  It's how I ended up with Andy Dalton.  Had Palmer AND Bradford picked in front of me!

All of these mock drafts will have no impact on ours since they don't take into account the keeper players and my selection Janikowski in round 1 and Vick in round 2 channeling my inner-Al.

I do it for me to see where I can expect to see certain players.  The fact that you choose to make no use of my hard work to defeat me, is your own business :P

You mean the league that you have no actual involvement in the selection of players since Yahoo! does it for you?  Fine.  I still don't see how it relates. :P

A win is still a win.  And maybe if the Vikings let Yahoo pick for them, they'd win a Super Bowl.

Hey dog need you to make Johnson a keeper.  He's slotted in your 1st round pick.

I hadn't realized that I had Calvin Johnson, too.  So, along with Eddie Lacy, I will keep Megatron.

I did that already online.  Is it not showing on my team?

Nope.  Sometimes there is a lag before the keeper symbol shows up, but you might want to check just to make sure your new keeper is saved.

Also when you get a chance look to see if you have access to commissioner rights.  There are a couple of scoring changes I want to look at and discuss on draft night with those who are on the voice chat through Steam.

I have Commish rights for the Pro, not the Rookie.  I set the keepers for me again.

OK I've set everyone's keepers to the draft.

Con I had to adjust your keepers based on what you placed here.  You had three players as keepers and Matt Ryan wasn't one of them.  I've adjusted your keepers to Matt Ryan and that Gostkowski.  If this is incorrect, I'll need to know before Saturday afternoon.

KBYZ - I saw your keepers in the league not sure why not updating.  Gronkowski - 5th Round and Charles - 1st round

Bison, I'm seeing with both leagues that it's telling us there has to be 12 teams in order to start the draft.  Haven't looked for how to fix that.  Don't have time at the moment.

No it''s the max size for a league to draft.  You HAVE to have an even number of teams.

Rookie League -  I'll be hitting the ready to draft button tomorrow evening, so I'd expect teams to be drafted no later than Monday.  Sometimes it takes longer if Yahoo is swamped, but that's a pretty rare event.  Anyway set your draft rankings before tomorrow evening.  I'm not even sure anyone reads this thread for the rookie league outside of some Canadian and elephant fetish boy.

Pro League - Every thing is set to go for the live draft to kick off at 7 PM Central on 5 September.  That's tomorrow and I'm sorry I didn't realize it was a holiday weekend.

I'm debating the merits of letting autodraft select my team as opposed to me screwing it up directly.

Or play a drinking game as you draft....start off with two shots, then take a shot every pick  >:D

Alternatively, take a shot everytime a Cowboy is drafted  O0

It must be the weekend, given that my last two posts have mentioned drinking!  Toonces should draft a team!

That's my philosophy too, can't blame yourself for picks you didn't make. And after all, aren't the rankings made by the 'experts'? They couldn't possibly be wrong right? :)

I honestly think drafting is the best part of a keeper league.

Oh the drafting part IS indeed the best time of the year. So much potential, so many possibilities, so few inklings into potential disasters...

But in all honesty, 'live' drafts with friends is the best way to go. I haven't done one of those in 15+ years, but that's always the best way to do it, with a draft board and everything.

I'm just generally tired of sucking at Fantasy Football. I've played since 1988 and gone to a championship one time. Been close many times, but the other guy always does better, or my team's injuries become ridiculous and unmanageable.

Then again - I've never gone whole hog into research, except back in the day when Cliff Charpentier was pretty much the only source for Fantasy Football information. Since then some guys go nuts on the research, and I just can't motivate myself to get that deeply into the numbers, especially when chance and luck factors into it so heavily (at least, for me).

You'd miss out on metal dog bragging about his every pick.

I might have to go autodraft route this year.

8pm is right in the middle of the nightly wrestling match that involves putting 4 year old twin boys to bed

Heh if its twins you have well I can tell you what the future holds!  To be honest I dont even remember much of when they were still babies much of it was a sleep walking haze.  All the photos of me holding them I look disheveled red eyed and unshaven.  But basically everything they tell you about twins is true.  We couldn't even complain since one of my sister in laws had triplets!

Rookie League draft is set and is in cue for the draft to happen.

Pro League is ready for tonight's festivities.   I'm going roller skating this afternoon so there is a possibility I'm in the hospital getting a broken bone treated if for some reason the draft room is not open when you all check.

JUST REMEMBER THE DRAFT STARTS AT 7.  It's on an auto timer that I cannot change.  The room will be open about 15 minutes before the start of the draft.  I'll open up a steam chat prior to that too.  Last year we, Metal and I, had a lot of fun just bullshiting through out the draft.

Bison, I don't know if you can still change it, but, I just looked at the schedules for a couple of teams in the Pro League.  You will play two or three teams, three times each and then one against the guys in the other division.  Or something like that.  Seems mighty unfair to play someone three times in a season.
Title: Re: 2015 Grogheads Fantasy Football Leagues
Post by: Bison on September 05, 2015, 11:20:39 PM
Huh...I'll have to look at it, but I think it sort of randomizes the schedule.  I know it won't be a 2 game series for every opponent due to the number of weeks.
Title: Re: 2015 Grogheads Fantasy Football Leagues
Post by: Bison on September 05, 2015, 11:33:06 PM
I'll have to look at it.  It'll be a schedule I'll have to create.  I think the way it was done is 3 X Division and 1 X Non-Division for 13 games.  Then I hit the reschedule button and it just randomized the schedule completely working still within the 3 vs 1 team and 1 game vs 1 another team concept.

It's too late to think about it right now but I'll do it sometime this weekend.

The problem is we can't take a Bye Week ;)  It's 2 x your division = 6 and 2 x the other division = 8.  One too many games for our 13 week season, but, 3 x your division and 1 x the other just seems wrong.  Best I can come up with is 2 x your division and 2 x the other - a random team from the other division.  Not satisfactory, but, what else is there?

QuoteDraft Summary
Well, a bad draft position led to an even worse draft. Picking fifth overall, Wild E's Coyotes is projected to land in eighth place in Grogheads Pro League with a record of 3-10-0 (1,519 points). They used a conservative plan early to fill out their lineup, selecting QB Aaron Rodgers (12th overall), RBs C.J. Anderson (5th) and Frank Gore (28th), and WRs Jordan Matthews (21st) and DeSean Jackson (37th). They built the worst group of WRs in the league, as they have Keenan Allen, Matthews, Jackson, and Anquan Boldin for their rotation.

I have no doubt they're right. But must they be so harsh? Jeez.

It'll end up being 6 games versus Division and 7 versus non-Division.  Just need to draft up a schedule so I set it up.

How does a balanced approach net me a B-.  I think Ryan is a good middle of the road QB Atlanta is going to throw more than they run and I took Bridgewater as a sleeper if the Vikings take off.  Bloody experts all picked Brady to be serving 4 game suspension this week as well so what do they know! :))

QuoteBaconExplosion isn't the best team in the league, but they aren't the worst, and there is something to be said for that. After selecting fourth overall, they are projected to finish in fifth in Grogheads Pro League at 5-8-0 (1,551 points). They went with a balanced approach early, selecting QB Matt Ryan (36th overall), RB Le'Veon Bell (4th), WR Brandin Cooks (20th), and TE Jimmy Graham (13th) within the first five rounds. They landed the lowest-scoring QB combo in the league, as they have Ryan and Teddy Bridgewater on the roster.

Schedule is set.  Everyone plays conference rivals twice and plays 3 non-conference teams twice and 1 non-conference team once.  It adds up to 13 games.

Metal if you want to do the rookie league I'm fine with it, but I'm not going to mess around with the schedule.

When you have an off season in fantasy football, you have an offseason.  Peyton Manning scores -2 points and gets benched and I'm still going to lose to the Tigers team by 10.  Unbelievable.

5 of 8 teams are scoring under their projection, some significantly so. This happened a couple of weeks ago as well. Except for the BUCS of course, they keep putting the hurt on.

Epic battle tonight Steelie!

1 week left in the regular season and then the playoffs start up for both leagues.

It's the top 6 in the playoffs with the top 2 getting a bye in the first round of the playoffs.

Hmmmm, so last week my Gravediggers were the perfect storm.....all my starters seemed to be playing against patsies, like the Browns, and boom....167 points.

This week, my all-star wide receiver is suspended....my certain league MVP Quarterback probably won't play the entire game, nor will his Pro Bowl TE, my Rookie of the Year RB is playing against the NFL's best run defense, and my back-ups are playing the likes of New England, Green Bay or Seattle.

Yeah, should be a close championship game. Or at least I hope I can keep it close!!! Good luck, Ligers!

Ten is always better than eight in FF.  Makes for less superstar rosters.  I mean, I had Antonio Brown, Martavis Bryant, Calvin Johnson, DeAndre Hopkins and Alshon Jeffery.  All five are WR1's for their teams except Bryant.  And he can put up WR1 numbers at any time.  And I know Megatron and Jeffery didn't perform up to spec this year, but, that's a ridiculous amount of talent on one team.
Title: Re: 2015 Grogheads Fantasy Football Leagues

The two areas that get hit hardest by expanding the league are TE and RB.  The TE is an easy enough fix by making the TE spot a TE/WR/RB type slot.  The RB is much harder.  There are fewer featured backs and more platoon backfields now and injuries expose the level of talent difference between a starter and a backup running back.

Something I'm not sure everyone realizes is, this game is about floor.  If the prediction for your player is 5 points for that week, a successful week is if he makes 5 points.  Anything over is gravy.  And you want to have as many guys on your team that make their weekly floor as possible.  In your starting lineup for sure, but on your bench, too.  The other thing is to play matchups.  If Daily Fantasy Sports has taught me anything, it's look at the matchups.  A lot of casual fans missed on Kirk Cousins or Blake Bortles performances this past weekend.  But, based on the matchup, both were primed for big games.  Anyways, I think the RB position will come down to a handful of backs being counted on every year and value on the remainder based on projected usage that season/period of time/week.  THAT'S why Le'Veon Bell is such a good bet.  Awesome runner on a team that uses him often.

And a hearty congratulations to Grim Reaper, too!

Well a bigger league places much more emphasis on using your bench effectively rather than as a bye week and injury emergency replacement pool.

I would be in favor of league expansion if you get the bodies and we go with the TE slot adjustment. I rode the waiver wires and free agents as hard as anyone and while that's nice to have available, I feel that a larger league adds to the challenge.

And Dawg, you're exactly right....it's all about the matchups. Makes for some tense decisions when you're considering leaving a "better" player on the bench because of a bad matchup. Heh, the sad thing about my part in the championship game yesterday? You can add my entire bench production to my total and I still would have lost  8)

I'd actually considered changing the TE slot this season, but with this few of players I felt it adds a level of challenging frustration.

^Been there.  HATE that! ;)

I've played in 10 to 12 man leagues most of the time I've played this game.  TE has always been a position on our rosters.  Yeah, it sucks if you're the guy that doesn't have Gronk, but, Tyler Eifert leads TE's with 12.  Jordan Reed is on FIRE and is tied or ahead of Eifert and Gronk for major stats leads.  Gary Barnidge has been eminently serviceable for Cleveland.  Greg Olsen is Newton's favorite target.  Travis Kelce, Austin Sefarian Jenkins, Zach Ertz.  All had week winning point totals for owners.  That's eight guys right there.  And that doesn't count Julius Thomas season or Martellus Bennet.  That makes 10.
Title: Re: 2015 Grogheads Fantasy Football Leagues
Post by: Bison on December 28, 2015, 12:39:34 PM
TE is a hit or miss position.  There are some favorite targets, but it really comes done to the QB.  Brady loves to throw to TE for TDs even if it's not Gronkowski.  Romeo loves TEs too, but this is starting to get uncomfortable to elaborate on any further.
Title: Re: 2015 Grogheads Fantasy Football Leagues

All positions are hit or miss.  TE just seems more so, due to the paucity at the top.  The position should be kept.  QB, WR, WR, WR, RB, RB, TE, FLEX, K, DEF.  That's a typical FF lineup.  And unfortunately, 4 Pts for a QB Passing TD and .5 Point Per Reception is standard, too.

That's a pretty fair position count.  In other leagues I've played in there's usually 1 less WR slot but everything else is the same.

On a side note:  If we can get the league up to 10 players, what do you guys think about contributing $5 each to a winner's pot?  It would allow the winner to pick up a decent groggy game (or 10 bad ones) and wouldn't break the bank.  Just a though.

If we go .5 PPR, then 2 WR spots and a Flex I think would be sufficient.

We've discussed a prize of some sort in the past, so I'm game if everyone else is good with it.  We'd just need to figure out how to do it without it being a hassle.
Title: Re: 2015 Grogheads Fantasy Football Leagues
Post by: Steelgrave on December 28, 2015, 01:49:51 PM
Dawg makes a good point on the TE position and thinking it through, I'm not too keen on cutting a WR slot. I view TE's like I do kickers....a mediocre one probably won't screw you too badly and a good one is bonus points. Overall I think we have a good balance with 3 WRs, 2 RB and a TE, plus it reflects the average NFL lineup well.

And I would kick in a few bucks if that's what the league wanted. Probably the easiest way would be to Paypal the commish to hold the funds. Might be enough to pick up a prize on Steam.
Title: Re: 2015 Grogheads Fantasy Football Leagues
Post by: Bison on December 28, 2015, 01:53:09 PM
Yes I'd originally picked the lineup based on a traditional team set.  2 RB (feature and 3d down), 3 WR (#1 and #2 plus a slot) and the TE.  I like the TE slot too, but its the one position that the talent can get diluted pretty quick in a bigger league.
Title: Re: 2015 Grogheads Fantasy Football Leagues
Post by: MetalDog on December 28, 2015, 02:07:32 PM
There's one TE I would hold above all others, Gronk.  Everyone else is just varying degrees of useful.  So, everyone is pretty much in the same boat.  That being the case, keep it.  I know I'd rather have Le'Veon Bell than Isaiah Crowell but you're not going to outlaw RB's are you?  And I'm in on the fiver.  Just let me know where and how to send it.
