the music question got me thinking.
what would be the best guys movie?
my two entries off the bat would be either:
Fight Club
The Big Lebowski
Bachelor Party
One Crazy Summer
Weird Science
Any John Wayne movie. Or Clint Eastwood except for the one where he sings.
Beer Fest (I made my German bother in law watch it....)
Predator (classic)
Office Space (nerd rage)
Kellys Heroes or Dirty Dozen (for the obligatory war flick)
Con
The Magnificent Seven
Seriously, just end the debate now

The first Lethal Weapon movie.
The Magnificent Seven
Kelly's Heroes
Army of Darkness
The Life of Brian
The Blues Brothers
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Big Trouble in Little China
Animal House (naturally)

GoodFellas
The Deer Hunter
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
This Is Spinal Tap

Deliverance
Spartacus
Midway
48 Hours
Clerks
Porky's (again, the first one)
Rocky
Scarface

No 'The Great Escape' yet?
Dirty Harry
War movie? Toss up between Kelly's Heroes (unforgettable characters) and Blackhawk Down (personal connection to the story, and excellent portrayal of how US soldiers *actually* act). The Great Escape and Where Eagles Dare are a slight cut below, to me.
Non-war movie? I liked Fight Club better than Big Lebowski - more layers to it and I discover something new every time I watch it (like the single-frame Tyler appearances at the dr's office and support group early in the movie). But I can admit that there are plenty of Dude fans out there who'll think I'm nuts.
Animal House has to be in there somewhere - maybe if we had a 'comedy' category. Spinal Tap too, but I fear too many of the music-biz in-jokes get lost on people.
To me, to be a "guy movie" it's got to be something that a guy would stop and watch the rest of while channel surfing, but women just keep on walking thru the room without even glancing at the TV. So as much as I love The Usual Suspects or Clerks or Fast Times At Ridgemont High, I couldn't put them on the list because I know too many chicks that would flop on the couch right next to you and start reciting lines.
I also look at the cast. The Great Escape and Magnificent Seven were great movies that brought together groups of iconic actors that you seldom see on screen together.
I'll throw Unforgiven into the mix as well.

By that measure, I think you've just bumped up Blackhawk Down without really meaning to... :)
what about the Oceans series? I wouldnt put them in the top 10 but still pretty good.
If we're going to do that, we might as well put Top Gun in the mix :P
well you and Toonces might. :P

It's sad that as I get older, some of the quotes I drop from movies like Strange Brew more often than not go right over the heads of those I'm speaking to. The 90s were easy for people to pick up on that stuff, the 2000s less so, and now...even people my own age don't know what the hell I'm talking about sometimes.
I'd buy that for a dollar!
You'd better, or there will be...trouble.

I gotta disagree with you on
The Usual Suspects, and say that it *is* a guys' movie. While I've known a few ladies who've enjoyed it well enough, I've never seen any of them just sit down and start watching it if/when it happened to be on. Nor do I know a single female who owns it -- every person I know who has that movie is a dude.

really....
you have a Star Trek avatar and you've never seen Blade Runner? ???
We already had this discussion (at some point in the not-too-distant past) regarding the classics and cult-classics I haven't seen, including Blade Runner, yes.
There's no particular reason I haven't seen it -- I've no aversion to watching the film or anything -- it's just never happened, that's all. I suppose it's a combination of my not having had a strong sci-fi "upbringing" (aside from watching Star Trek TOS reruns with my father), and that most of my offline geek friends are at least a few years younger than me. :-\
I think there's some difference between watching classic movies when you're younger, and doing it today.
A few years back a buddy of mine insisted I watch The Warriors, because he said it was one of the most awesome movies ever made. I thought it was awful, though I took it way way too seriously when I watched it, and should not have. Still, it's not something I care to ever see again.
but Blade Runner is still awesome to this day.

Dude...tube socks and Jew-fros do not gangsters make.
Though I admitted (I thought) that I took the movie way too seriously. Definitely more than I should have.
Tube socks and Jew-fros would be my life if I were taller and had hair. You can't take The Warriors seriously at all! There's your problem. You also should be from Coney Island (like me) and then your love will be complete. Even though some of the best scenes in The Warriors were not filmed in NYC, the end in Coney Island was and I cry every time.

^ ooh, Sam Peckinpaw...
'Tis a great film.
Alright then. Film? How about The Band of Brothers or it's even more excellent brother production, The Pacific? I know it's not a "Film". But they are the best historical war series ever and so I fudge the rules. ^-^ I saw Zulu listed. Anybody ever see the later production, "Zulu Dawn"? About the Brits getting their arses handed to them just before the events in "Zulu". Great films to see back to back. With wings, drinks, and with or without boobs.
Zulu dawn, although good, is not as epic as Zulu. And yes, Isandlwana was a right old cock-up.
I think some of the same actors are in both movies. So you can see them get killed at Isandlwana and them watch them win at Rourke's Drift. Or the other way around.
Plus the films are arse-about-face, since Rourke's Drift was the day after Isandlwana.
Cross of Iron..of course!!..not sure how I forgot that one..book is superb aswell. Prob my all time fav war film.
Aye, the book was called "The Willing Flesh" as I recall.
How about All Quiet on the Western Front? I read the book very young, maybe nine or ten, and it has stayed with me since. Love the ancient movie too.

I think Bill Murray is a great comedic actor. A serious actor...meh, not so much. Razor's Edge was underwhelming. Lost In Translation...okay, well, I was underwhelmed with that one too - I understand it's supposed to be genius, but it didn't resonate with me when I tried to watch it. Perhaps I need to see it again. I never bothered with The Life Aquatic though I understand it's a 'comedy drama.' Not sure what to make of that but can't quite get enthusiastic enough to try.
When he does comedy, he's brilliant. Otherwise, not so much. IMO anyway.
