Title: Retro Me262 COMPLETE!!!
Post by: JudgeDredd on May 02, 2015, 04:14:59 PM
My daughter bought me a 1/72 scale Airfix Me262 for Christmas. She knew I made models with my dad as I've spoke about it before and she thought it would be nice if she could get me an older model.

I have no idea how she knew - maybe it was just luck - but she did actually manage to get me a very old (70s - 80s) model from a market.

I already had a 1/72 scale Hasegawa Me262 waiting to be made - but haven't got round to it. Anyway - I was thinking about making the one she bought me but when I opened the box, I just can't seem to make myself want to do it. It's a piece of history. A memory of me and my dad...a fond one. Once it's made, it's made.

Anyway - this is the retro Airfix model

If it were me, I'd keep the Airfix one in the box out of pure nostalgia.

My dad used to make stuff with me as well. First one he ever did was the Airfix Spitfire.

I understand the feeling but to me models, like games, were meant to be enjoyed not saved for posterity. All of my board games have been punched and played at least once. I have large-ish collection but it's not fer show. Same as my 25 year old Miata. It's got 120,000+ kms on the odometer. I take care of it but it's meant to be driven.

So all that to say build the damn model and maybe put yer Dad's name near the cockpit in honour.

:)

I like that you laid it out on another oldish game B-17 queen of the skies.  Somehow fitting on a lot of different levels

That is a very smart girl you have there JD.  Have you built any models with her?  I'm wondering if so maybe I could try to do that with my daughters.

Well - thanks for the replies.

I spoke to her last night and explained why I didn't want to make it and she was cool with it. She understood. I was gobsmacked at the instructions and it brought memories flooding back.

However - having read the replies I think perhaps I could go one better. Perhaps I could not only make it the best I can, but maybe I'll frame the instructions to sit on the wall behind it and maybe even do a little diorama for it - with my dads name on it.

So I don't know yet - I might.....I might not.

Con

Yeah I'm looking at giving B-17 Queen of the Skies a go this weekend. I didn't even think of the significance of the model and the game...but it's there for all to see.

W8taminute
You know what. I never have. I have done with my younger daughter when she was about 10 (she's now 14) - she built a Spitfire - but not my eldest that I can recall because I wasn't into modelling then and about 5 years ago when I started again, Megan (my eldest) was as Cathryn is now - 13-14 and not interested.

If your kids are young enough - give it a go...but if they're about 12 or more, they may not show much enthusiasm. Both my kids understand my love for the hobby (stress free, passes a Sunday afternoon away, being creative) but they're of the age now where such things are not in their desires to partake in.

You could make one of them up as Me262A1 " Screamin' Meemie", a captured example used in flight testing by the USA:

You can even get a decal set!

Well - this is it started.

As if to prove it's from the dark ages, it's fitting is pretty poor and it's got raised panel lines. I think I'm going to leave the gaps so that I can remember how poor the machining was back in the day

Right...well...I've picked this up again.

I was originally not going to fill it - to keep it "the way it was" - but I've decided to go ahead and fill it.

Now it's something that's new to me. I've never done filling before (or not a lot) so I'm not great at it and I don't have a plethora of sanders...but I thought it'd be worth filling those huge gaps.

Next up will be primer. I'm still really nervous about this because I'm not great with my airbrush. I don't know what's the matter with me...I've watched a shed load of videos to pick up little snippets and techniques and I just can't seem to use that damn thing properly. I upgraded from my very cheap airbrush that was giving me jip to a reasonable Harder Steinbeck Ultra...and still I'm crap.

Anyway - photos will follow (eventually!) and I'll be judged by you lot  :)

I don't really like the putty I'm using...it goes off really quick and therefore goes on thicker than I'd like. I've ordered some different stuff.

The model is a prime example of how bad tooling used to be...but I think it'll cover up well with primer

Those pictures showed it needs some more tlc before I get on with primer. Damn that putty was tough!

I need more sanders. The ones I've got are a bit on the large side. I'll also have to use the fine grade - I can see a lot of scratching

:'(

I've not used it yet, but I grabbed a tube of Tamiya's white modelling putty.  Not sure about it's properties but it seemed to get good reviews regarding it's malleability and ease of sanding, so I grabbed a small one in case it was needed.

I ordered some Vallejo based on what I had read.

I don't know what I've got, but it's more like brick mortar than modelling putty!  :))

This model is definitely pushing my skill boundaries.

On the plus side, it's getting me to try things I hadn't ventured into before.

I now know why my dad had such a desire to burn them when he made them!!  :buck2:

I've got a beautiful looking Revell P-47 Thunderbolt (bubble top) waiting in the wings (pun intended!)...although the Razorback is my preferred version

Ok...tonight's the night...my trial with the airbrush (well, second attempt - first wasn't as expected)

Filling isn't as good as it could be I guess - but I'm not really used to it and I've got very few options in sanding sticks. So it'll have to do. The model was a complete ball ache to make. Those early machined kits were bloody hard work. I'm glad my dad made most of them when we were kids.

The airbrush has been really holding me back. I guess once I get used to it, it'll be ok...but paint/thinner mix, pressure, accuracy, paint flow...there's ALOT that could go wrong

Anyway...here goes.

That looks mental.

I'm not at a "building stage" where I can afford models of that calibre. You have to be able to do them justice. I have a lot of practice before then.

Well - I've done the primer. Mixed feelings about it really. I started off with it thinned (I'm using Vallejo primer) and it was too runny. So I put the next lot in neat. By the end - it had really thickened on the needle. Thankfully - that wasn't until I had finished. So I'm going to have to research my primer and see what's the best one out there.

Anyway - primer done on the Me262 and the P-51 I am working on. I still have to do the nose of the P-51 and I have to work out the best ways to put the model when painted because I think I've marked the bottom of the engines on the Me262!

Like I said - this is a learning curve for me. I have to say though, I thoroughly enjoyed using the airbrush. It wasn't as scary as it looked. It took a fair bit of cleaning out that primer though.

Primer was the easy part though. Pre-shading (if I do that) and then the paint scheme are going to be the real test.

I used to use the Spray Can's still for Primer.. what was it called Krylon or something like that?

Then the Airbrush for the regular coat and finishes..

I do have a tin of Tamiya primer which is actually very good - but you can't regulate the pressure - it just comes flying out. Not a bad result - but it was stressing me using it.

So - some pre-shading. Again - a new technique for me...

lol.. with the Spray Can I would do just outside the cellar door, plenty of ventilation!.. with my Airbrush I did Acrylics, not as bad with the fumes!

Some things I'm learning...

I may not pre-shade on 1/72 again. It's a real pita and I simply don't have steady enough hands for it.

Always though 1/72 was too small..Maybe for big bombers to save room, but other than that.. 1/48 is a lot better, more detail, not too big space wise.

ok...I had a bit of a mare with the Vallejo Model Air paints. First time using them my brush got clogged and I panicked and downed tools.

But - I dusted myself off and carried on today.

So this is free hand camo. I prefer that because that's the way it was when I was in. When we were painting wagons, the only thing we masked was glass...everything else was free hand.

However - I'm not overly impressed with the results. I haven't finished yet. For a start, I have to do the blue again to "blend in" and cover where I didn't mask...bummer. On top of that, well...you decide. I'm not incredibly happy - but as a first timer at airbrushing - things can only get better.

I'm still not overly convinced about the Vallejo Model Air...the jury is out

So - I screwed up in the sense that I either painted in the wrong order or I should've masked...either way, the blue needed touching up.

So here she is prepped to have the blue re-applied
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1160.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq499%2Fwmar1967%2FModels%2FAirfix%2520ME262%25201-72%2FIMAG0314_zpspvfvh2xz.jpg&hash=81794e7f90960d1ce6f90ef24c3494753930c116)

And here she is touched up. I'm rather impressed with my deft touch with the "merging" of the blue and green. However I still have the nose to deal with...for some bizarre reason I painted it black!
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1160.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq499%2Fwmar1967%2FModels%2FAirfix%2520ME262%25201-72%2FIMAG0315_zpse5ulffkm.jpg&hash=2d3d04a8357131af28c7dd93f4b9f0f7e61b9728)

Once I touch that nose up, I'm onto the wheels, canopy and bombs. Then it'll be a clear coat followed by the decals and a final covering of clear. I'll likely weather it a bit too.

Getting there. Wheels are on, bombs are on, canopy has been masked and painted and various places touched up.

I'm a bit impressed with the masking. I did not use an Eduard mask...I just did it myself with Tamiya modelling tape.

As it's not a "tail dragger" I was at a loss (as I was as a kid) as to how to get it to sit up....I have used a shed load of "blu-Tack" in the nose wheel section. Had I been prepared, I could've use ball bearings of some sort...but you live and learn.

She's done. Klear applied, decals on and more Klear applied.

I was going to weather - but I'm not sure...I like her.

I was really nervous about doing this model. My daughter had bought it as a special gift for me...it wasn't a lot of money, but she understood the significance of the model and it's age and that was priceless to me. So I was really nervous - first time using an airbrush, first time not using enamels, first time using certain paints (Tamiya and Vallejo Model Air), first time filling and first time sanding.

It's not perfect - but I'm really rather pleased with the result. I hope she is.

They were an option and moveable - but they weren't a good fit (like a lot of the model) so I glued them in the "take-off" position.

That's the first time you started using acrylic and not enamel paints?  Nice!

I was so glad to be rid of the enamel mess & stench.  I actually like the end texture result of acrylics better too and they're so easy to dilute.  Dunno what you think about aircraft model kits regarding the stuff, but was a big leap when I started painting minis again.

That's some great work, JD.

Just a question - was there no swastika sticker for the tail? Just curious if they censure those in model kits. It's been a long time since I've put a model together...maybe I should get into it. Like I need another habit, but I do love miniatures and models.

yes they censure it in European kits.  Japanese kits usually have multipart decals to get around it.

You should JH - it's a very relaxing hobby. I can spend hours on a Saturday or Sunday just piecing bits together, priming, painting.

I started off a couple of years ago with enamels like my dad and brother used to do. We just glued, painted and that was that.

It took me a while but I now do airbrushing and weathering. I've got a huge amount of distance to go - but I'm happy producing what I produce. It doesn't have to be like some of the seemingly professional dioramas I see around. When I first saw those, they were intimidating - but I came to just be happy learning new techniques.

I'm way not good enough to start spending £50+ on a kit - but one day...

JD, you're skill has improved greatly since just a couple years ago. It's been cool to see the progression. You've been dedicated to your craft.
