Kick ass.  Revised interface?  I don't expect the world there, but improved UI with this guy's games is always a plus.

As with their Achtung Panzer/Graviteam Tactics, it's fun because it's dual-layered.  Strategy & Sim together.  Now that I have SBPro, which has a playable T-62 IIRC, I probably don't need to bother with the T-62 except maybe if I feel like the specific settings in SABOW.  But a playable M-60 is welcome when I want some retro 105 from the 70s.

Nice. Maybe it's time to play again. I like the sound when your tank gets hit. Like sitting inside a metal drum and someone bangs at it.

fond memories. I have a blog post about this back in 2011.

I have had SABOW for a while and think it is great.

Nice blog entry Jomni :)

I have been using Steel Fury Khatkov 42 lately. That is also excellent.

Just wondering - I have APOS and the Zhalanskol, Operation Hooper, and Shield of the Prophet modern dlcs. Is this a rehash of the same or something quite new?

You're talking about a totally different game. Steel Armor is primarily a tank simulation, with a strategic element. APOS is completely strategic, with no direct simulation or control of vehicles.

But Op Hooper and Shield of the Prophet campaigns ported over from SABOW to AP/GT.  They were originally done for SABOW.

But SABOW  has the same operational map and tactical game.  You can even give commands to them exactly in the same way as Graviteam Tactics.  But they auto resolve battles that do not involve the drivable  tanks and not let you play them like GT.

Wish they made all tanks drivable and play all operational and tactical battles like GT. That would the the killer app.

Just played and interface still sucks.   Have to relearn everthing.

If you have the "Re-Mastered" version of SABOW then it is simple. Just install the latest patch.

If you have "another" version like the physical then you may have to do a core update first.

If any help is required then let me know :)

Don't you still need to apply a Core update exe, then run the content update(s)?  The same old odd update process like that in Achtung Panzer/GT?

Not for the remastered at this point. Steam updates automatically. Gamersgate version just apply the latest update. It is the "Older" version that may require the core update.

Correct. It is the same procedure for all patches prior to this. You run the update program from within the game or from the separate .exe in the root directory and install the patch. Then save and play.

For that price, I'll jump'in.

I'd love to see them add crewable tanks to graviteam tactics.  When it comes to that game I'd rather just play combat mission, but if you add crewable vehicles, well now there's a reason to think other wise.

Graviteam are a small company with limited resources. They have said that single player is the priority but depending on the success of the product then MP is a possibility in the future.

GTOS and SABOW have the "Network" option in the settings already though they are not functional.

Games well worth the seven bucks I paid for it, glad I picked it up.

Only complaint is that I wish they would make the graviteam rts games have crewable vehicles.  I'd love to see panzers and t-34s with SABOW's engine.  Steel fury doent cut it, I want to crew a panzer or t-34 in SABOW's campaign system.

It's ok, I'd boot it up if you already have it.  There's a ton of mods and senarios for it, but I'd rather see the graviteam devs bring WWII to the SABOW engine.

There's only 2 crewable tanks in SABOW, and it's cool they went for more obscure conflicts.  So future dev paths would be Yom Kippur or go more Modern into the timeline, but I'd steer clear cuz steel beasts has that locked up.  I'd rather they go the other direction in the timeline towards WWII, no ones really doing it at the moment at high fidelity.

Hey Asid,...Questions :D

I'm playing Steel Armor and i am confused by the controls[graviteam, go figure] I have the latest manual from GG dated 4/29/15, the controls from this manual don't match the in game controls in the option menu. For an example the in game controls in the option menu say spacebar gives you the orders menu, when in fact its fire at will when i play. Am i in the wrong mode? I can seem to get the orders menu to come up. Another question, the manual mentions "active defense" and mentions an active defense interface which i have yet to see, where you can order your units to look for hull down positions. I also can't figure out when i'm giving orders to a single tank or a platoon, when i look in the menu options it says orders by platoon. Do i have to give some platoon orders using the operations map? Sometimes the whole platoon honors the orders other times just the tank i'm in.....I've got to be missing something.
Here's a shot of the page of the manual that mentions Active defense, i don't see any of those icons.

I am using the Steam version so my version is slightly ahead. My manual is 3rd May 2015. Also if you look in the folder you will find a controls PDF called "03_controls". This is located here: Steel Armor Blaze of War\docs\support.

The Spacebar = Quick orders pop-up.
This works in the F10 map view. It brings up a menu once the unit is selected. Select the unit and right clicking the mouse button achieves the same result.

Active defense
The tank will take cover relative to the active target that you are engaging. That is once you have designated the target. To activate it just press the "9" key once you have an active target.

Also there is a mission called "Active defence" in the "missions" menu on the main screen.

Orders to a tank or platoon/single tank
The orders bar in 3D view runs along the bottom of the screen. There is an icon 4th from the left. It is 3 silhouettes this means the orders are to all tanks in the platoon. Right click this icon and it turns to 1 silhouette this means you are giving orders to 1 tank. You can also hold the "Shift" key while issuing orders and you will see the central figure in the silhouette turns blue. This means you are issuing orders to the one tank. Your own.

Also, In the "game settings menu" I suggest you change option 10.05 "change view to horizon". Change this to 100 or 150% and 200% if your PC allows. This allows you to see a greater distance.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need any more help. I can be reached on TeamSpeak and i find this can expedite the resolution of "issues".

Regards

Stop reading the manual and just do the tutorials.
Keep doing them until you win all engagements.
Just check out the Controls page in Settings for details.
And ask here if you have any more questions.

I know what SABOT and HEAT rounds are but what is best to use in SABOW?   The lack or reactive and thick armor on the tanks in this game makes me think HEAT is preferred.  They can potentially do more damage and there is visual feedback.  I've been poking SABOTs on targets and don't know if I got them or not.  But it seems to be different in SB Pro. SABOT seems to be more effective.  Am I right? Also I can't seem to do one-shot-kills in this game.  Is it characteristic of tank battles during the era? Something like a glorified WW2 tank battle.

I played the air strike mission. The sight of two MiG-23 making passes is amazing.

Hi Jomni

I thought I had replied but it must not have sent   >:( ...It was a longer reply. This is the shortened version. Apologies.

You can check the in-game encyclopedia. This will give you all the figures. For example armour thickness and penetration values.

I find in SABOW that SABOT rounds tend to ricochet more than HEAT. There are many factors involved as you know. Distance to target, angle and location  to name a few. The tanks in SABOW are circa 1970 and as such do not have the armour associated with modern tanks such as Chobham or Reactive. This  means that HEAT is very effective against tanks in SABOW. SABOT tends to pass right through while HEAT sends molten metal into the vehicle killing the crew. The SABOT round also travels faster. However the HEAT round keeps its effectiveness over greater distances.

1 shot kill
To get a 1 shot kill is difficult. You have to hit at the correct location with the most potent round at the correct angle. You may disable the crew or tank but
not entirely destroy it.

I use
HE against infantry
SABOT/HEAT against PC's (HEAT usually first choice)
SABOT/HEAT against tanks (SABOT usually first choice and depending on enemy orientation)
So SABOT against hard armour & HEAT against softer armour.

Steel Beasts
Steel Beasts models various rounds from different eras with greater penetration values. Depleted Uranium is a big help here. SB also models different types of
armour which is designed in varying degrees of effectiveness to counter projectile threats which reduces the effects of a HEAT round. You can score a 1 shot kill in SB depending on where you hit the vehicle, what you hit it with and at what distance you engaged.

Hope this helps

Going to finally give it a try.  I got it a long time ago on a holiday sale with blue coins.  I saw the release of Across the Rhine on Steam and relived my deep disappointment at that title, so I've got the itch for a good armor sim.

Any other tips for a newbie?

Any other tips for a newbie?

In Options menu change following.:
4.23 Unit color on the operational map = NATO
This will allow you to be Blue and enemy Red. Most are used to this way

5.01 Always show enemy = enabled
This will allow you to see the enemy on the map and easily find/engage while you are learning

8.12 show distance and LOS = enabled
Great tool in the map view. You will have a good idea of LOS

10.05 Change distance to horizon = 100% +
Default is 75% which is too restrictive. More means you see more and enemy earlier but can hit F.P.S.

10.07 Automatic start of subsystems
Make it easy on yourself when learning. You will not have to turn systems on and off.

10.12 Realistic control restriction disabled
This will allow you to jump to map view no matter what crew position you are in. Otherwise you will have to always switch back to Commander before accessing the map.

To gain hands on experience.
Select "Battle Editor" from the main menu.
Select "Quick battle settings"
Option 2 "Enemy side". Set it as "Target". They will not return fire. This way you can practice without the annoyance of getting killed.....

Practice in the battle editor.

Hope this helps :)

SABOW is incredibly immersive as well as being a deep simulation.

There have been many changes made to SABOW since it was re-mastered. I think it's a great tank simulation which is often overlooked. Two of the reasons people overlook it is because of the UI and update process. I have been putting together an in-depth article about SABOW. I will release it when finished. Apologies for being slow.

This is a game that I own but sadly do not play enough of because I completely and utterly suck at it.  And by suck, I mean SUCK.

But if it's good enough for you, then it's good enough for me.  I need to see what's coming and get some motivation to dive back into it.

I prefer the tankiness of Steel Beasts over SABOW, but SABOW is by far the better game with the operational layer....something I so utterly wish they would implement in SB.  I absolutely hate playing games that have one-off battles that aren't interconnected in some bigger picture.

I understand why SB doesn't do this, but that doesn't make me like the game as a game any more, if that makes sense.

Hi Toonces.

May I ask which version of SABOW you have?

•   DVD/Other
•   Gamers Gate
•   Steam

The GG & Steam versions are the most up to date. There is a large difference from the original release a few years back.

SABOW is actually quite deep. It is not as "gamey" as some would think. The Dev's have done an excellent job modelling the M60 & T62. All of the positions are available. It just takes a little getting used to. There are many options that one can set in order to customise the gameplay to ones needs. You can set the Realism level to "Arcade" or "Simulator". You can select whether the crew gain realistic experience or not. Many options like that are available. I will attempt to hi light these.

SABOW is single player. MP would be great. However it is not available at this time. There is a "Network" option but it is greyed out. What you do get is great AI with a dynamic campaign. As well as a great battle generator.

It has a good interface with ample shortcut keys. You will not be left reaching for the pdf in the heat of battle once you have learned UI.

Friction between the tank and ground surface is modelled extremely well. You can notice a difference with the different surfaces.

I mentioned earlier about fully crewed positions. The crew appear in 3D. You can swap out a dead crew member if needed. Say your driver has expired. You can swap him out with your TC. Though that leaves you without a TC. At least you can be mobile again. This is one of the nice immersive features available in SABOW. Some may say it is "chrome". I say it is immersion.

I have both the original DVD and the new Steam version. I could not wait for the updates.... I have many..Many hours logged on the Steam version. I have played most if not all (the ones I know of) tank sims and I say SABOW, though not perfect, is an excellent simulator and should be in the depot of every computer tank commander.

This is my honest opinion.

Asid, we don't drive WW2 tanks in SABOW.
But I know it's just a typo.

Let me chime in.  In short, it is a good sim. Cold war tanks with no laser range finders are actually fun compared to modern point and shoot fire control.  The UI has improved a lot in remastered. And the AI driver has learned new tricks like   finding hull down position and quick pop up sequences. There are now air strikes. And it has an operational campaign as opposed to Steel Beasts.

Nice vid WW...thanks, and I added the site to my favorites to check out later. Seemed like the Russian made tank's gun elevated way up after each shot. Even the narrator comments on this during the video. Why is that, is supposed to happen? I've only dabbled in tank sims, mostly WW2, so this is new to me.

Hi Rayfer

JC and I already discussed this. This is a limiting feature of the T62. Every time it fires the main gun it goes into the "détente" position. The main gun stays elevated for a few (loooong) seconds to allow the spent cartridge to be ejected. The power transverse is affected during this time and cannot operate. This limits the rate of fire to 4 main per minute.
That's the short answer.

JC has a great blog. Everyone should visit it  O0

Hope it helps

Physics in SABOW. Look at the bridge and how the weight of the tank distorts it.

So I was looking at some videos this weekend and I'm a bit confused.  I have both Graviteam Tactics and SABOW.  I saw a video that had (edit: Steel Fury): (this is the old Graviteam Tactics, right) but in it the guy was driving a WW2 tank.  I couldn't figure out if it was a mod, or if that is standard now.

Any thoughts on what's going on?

Edit: Found the video

Yeah...its a totally different game called "Steel Fury". It models the battle of Kharkov in 1942. It came out before SABOW. Also, an excellent game.

Just to add to what JH said.

Graviteam is the name of the DEV

Graviteam Tactics is the name of the series with Operation star etc.

Steel Fury: Kharkov 1942 is a great simulation with an active modding community. It made a few years ago by the same devs. It has a great selection of scenarios and campaigns. You can get inside the vehicles...Yes vehicles as there are more than tanks in this.

Here's a link with useful info about the mods etc.
http://dogsofwarvu.com/forum/index.php/topic,338.0.html

SABOW is a an excellent simulator which models conflicts in the 80's. You can get inside only 2 tanks. M60 & T62. However you can control other tanks, pc's, infantry and UAV's.

Graviteam sims are very immersive and not expensive at all. They frequently appear on sale. If you have any interest in tank simulation then I would suggest you take a closer look.

SABOW

I took out the 2 enemy tanks!! Notice the spent shell behind the tank. It also has a broken track (LHS) courtesy of my sabot!

Notice the dead tank on the left. The crew tried to abandon the tank when it was badly damaged but i introduced them to my coax! See one member dead next to the tank in a pool of blood!

So I played some of this and it is fantastic.

***grumble, grumble, grumble***

The graphics are great and the gameplay is superb. There's ALOT of keys and some of my keys (mapped in the game) were firing off other things on my PC (F3 was External/Internal view and also kept stopping and starting my video recording software!)

***grumble, grumble, grumble***

I can see me playing more than this - I just need to put get a grip of the key mappings and fix the crossover with system stuff.

But yeah - good game - thanks a lot for the help Asid.

Saving Basra - Steel Armor Blaze of War

December 1985. After years of war, the Iranians are feeling the pinch of social unrest. Determined to finish Saddam Hussein and his Army, chairman Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani made it clear that the only way to finish the war would be an attack on Basra. The first phase of the operation would be crossing the the Shatt al-Arab river, south of Basra (Operation Karbala 4) and to turn the Iraqi defensive positions centered on Basra.
