Title: Next Assassin's Creed Revealed
Post by: Jarhead0331 on April 30, 2020, 09:01:58 AM
Vikings.

https://www.ubisoft.com/en-us/game/assassins-creed/valhalla (https://www.ubisoft.com/en-us/game/assassins-creed/valhalla)

I'm sure it will be cool, but I was really hoping for Samurais and ninjas. This game system just cries out for it. It would be much more true to the spirit of the series than Vikings, who aren't really known for sneaking around.

There is, btw, an Eastern AssCreed game, but it's part of a trilogy of mobile ports or something like that. AssCreed Chronicles:China

Totally a waste. Now, a chinese King-Fu version of Assassin's Creed would be pretty cool too.

Pfft 'underwear'.

I could never get any of those AssCreed China, Russia or India ports to work on my PC.

They just look and run like crap.

I am currently still playing through Odyssey and Origins. Have 60+ hours into both and only about half way done with both.

Very much looking forward to Valhalla. Some of the scenes in that trailer looked to be France and definitely England. Would be great if they covered far flung places like Russia and Byzantium too.

I was kinda meh about Odyssey (nothing really felt unique in the game - every town looked like any other, all the fighting was repetitive), but I really loved Origins. Looking forward to this.

England is supposedly where it's mainly set. It starts in Norway, but you are forced to flee in your longboats for some reason. You fetch up in England and get a settlement to upgrade. I think this one is supposed to be a little more land-based than Odyssey, but you still get plenty of longboat action.

A far flung locale like Russia or Byzantium would be a big ask, I realize...but it would be SO COOL.

Like a Varangian Guard DLC or somesuch.

Considering the overarching plotline, plus the increasingly strong architectural focus, I would not be surprised at all if Constantinople is on the menu eventually.

I was never really an AC fan.  Aside from the first game, I've only played Revelations, which admittedly gave me an unfair impression of the series as a whole.

But when I see this announcement, I just have to ask myself:  Why?  The naval mechanics of the later games seemed quite interesting, but beyond that each of these games looks like a carbon copy of the last with new costumes, skins, and historical flavor plastered on.

And now they're going with fucking vikings of all things?  Just.... Why?  Did somebody ask for this?  Is there some untapped niche of "sneaky ninja/assassin game, but vikings" I'm unaware of?  Of all the different historical settings and concepts they could have explored, they managed to choose one that feels both wholly unfitting and "been there done that" at the same time.  Baffling.

Historical flavor counts for a lot. And I've had a total blast with the naval aspects of Black Flag, Odyssey and Origins.

Try Black Flag. I never had an interest in pirates but that game ignited it for me. Same for Greek history and myths.

I get that appeal of the series, for sure.  And I have been tempted on multiple occasions to pick up Black Flag due to both the subject matter and the fact that your crews actually sing maritime songs.   :smitten:

I am really looking forward to this. The DLCs in druidic Ireland and at the Siege of Paris sound epic. However, I am not purchasing until I get my new machine and I can find it on sale for a discount somewhere. Right now the full game plus the season pass is ~100.00, which is too rich for my blood.

The reviewer at PC Gamer loved the combat...RPS liked the game overall, with a few niggles. Once I have the new rig and a decent sale I will purchase definitely purchase...the DLCs in Ireland and France are too much for me to resist. I also loved both Origins and Odyssey.

This reviewer does agree with a lot of what the RPS and PCGamer reviewers said, including the artwork and colors, and the errors in animation and graphics that some rigs may get, and some may not. A lot of these are reasons I rarely pre-order or get games on release anymore.

I don't know, typically their other popular titles take quite some time to discount...eventually they do, but never seems that much where I would rather play sooner than wait for months.  I would be surprised it being much cheaper in the next six months.

This is a big title getting great reviews. If it's discounted in 6 months it will only be for a fleeting sale.

Normally it would be a no-brainer to buy now because I have been salivating for this game, but we have a 2-month-old baby (my 1st - I'm 65.  :o) plus we're in the middle of a cross-country move, so there's no way on god's green earth I will be playing inside the next month. So I will at least wait to see a few more reviews and, even better, some smart gamers saying what it is like after having played it for a while--hopefully on this forum.

Good luck on all counts.

For reference, about an hour ago I received an email from either Fanatical or Green Man and they had the new Call of Duty game on sale for about 12% off, and it gets released in a few days.

Valhalla can't be far behind!

Although Gus, COD is different...for many years COD has been available for a discount prior to launch, usually 10-15%, that is pretty typical for that series as it has sucked me in every time:)

But with Valhalla, I am pretty sure for the PC It is an exclusive on either UBI (and their subscription service) or Epic so your choices for finding and buying on sale will be limited to those two sources unless at some point they release to other sellers (i.e. steam, fanatacial, greenman, etc.).  I am sure it will be available from some of the questionable resellers so that might be a possible route but on launch even strangely those sites aren't even cheaper.

No doubt it will be on sale some day where ever it is and certainly no issue for waiting it out......some times I wish I didn't have such an impulse buy sickness myself:)

By the way, played a little last night, so far so good but not far enough to really draw conclusions.  But one thing I like that I never seen before is multiple difficulty options.  You get separate difficulty options for exploration, combat, and stealth...therefore, really nice how you can customize your experience.  With the day off today, hoping to put more time into it.

I only realized it wasn't available of Steam yesterday, so I ended up buying it on my PS4 instead (I'm not sure if I'll get a PS5, but if I do, the game is already in my account so I don't have to buy it again).

If you like AssCreed games, you'll like this. You don't start out as an assassin this time, though. The world is beautiful (I've only seen Norway thus far) and detailed. The combat is like any other game.

Of note, this is my first day-one purchase of a AAA game on PlayStation and I've noticed a lot of bugs. Nothing game breaking, but sometimes goofy graphics, poorly synced cut scenes (sounds not synced to the lips, or scenes ending too early or to late, some other minor twitchy stuff) and sometimes the narrative takes you from point A to point D seemingly skipping out on the one or two logical points that should be between those two events.

Not sure if this is normal for console games and as a usual jonny-come-lately to AAA titles all these bits have been patched up once I get the game, but they're kinda annoying and fairly frequent.

All in all, I'm enjoying it. I look forward to getting to England.

I am really enjoying it so far, been a long time since I have played a game for a long period of time on a given day.  Certainly not ground breaking, but just love the atmosphere.  I read an article that recommended touring around Norway before even starting the first main quest and I have been doing that for hours....not even ready to begin the main story yet.  Like navigating around in my longship and almost got capsized by a whale.  Combat seems pretty typical, so far I only have an axe and a bow but I have fun picking people off.  Really like the variable location of things....some things in plain sight, others on mountaintops, while others hidden in various areas.  Nice variety.

Eventually I'll start the main story, but think I have a few hours of exploring Norway before I do...

Apparently the weapons you start with are essentially the only weapons you have during the game. They get upgraded, but there isn't the loot in weapons and gear that the prior titles have.

You can buy weapons in the shops - there are different types of bows and axes, at least. I have one-handed axes and two handed as well, and there a throwing axes I have yet to encounter. I can't confirm swords, as I'm more than happy with what I've got so I haven't gone looking for anything else.

I never had a Nintendo system. I had some cheap, knockoff Atari 2600 system, then a C-64, then an Amiga, then an original PS1.

I know that Valhalla is a bit wonky on some PCs right now - I would bet that in a few months all versions will run as smooth as buttah.

Well, I just uninstalled AC Valhalla. Don't get me wrong, it's a good game. The problem for me personally is I'm pretty much burned-out on the whole AC formula. I've been playing AC games since the original AC came out in 2008. I bought Origins played about 20 hours and then tried Odyssey and only played that one about 10 hours before the rot set in with me. All the fetch quests and loot gathering is just something I can't hack anymore. Having said this I'm still trying to finish AC Unity and have been for the last year. For some inexplicable reason I just prefer it over all the others now. Maybe its' the smaller scale or the setting in Paris as I feel it gives me more opportunities for stealth action. I also like the combat in Unity the best. The combat in Valhalla somehow just doesn't do it for me. It was a hard decision for me because I like the whole Vikings in the British Isles setting. Maybe someday I'll come back to it. Who knows?

I just reinstalled RYSE where you play as a Roman Centurion. I enjoyed the campaign in the game and will replay it. No loot boxes and no side quests, just a decent story and I enjoy the combat mechanics. And for those times when I just want some quick sword combat I can go into the skirmish mode and have some good matches in the arena with bots.

Some settings work better than others for AC. The more modern ones I think work less well but I can't really figure out why. I still enjoy Unity and Syndicate, though. My favorite AC is Black Flag which ironically has the setting that interests me the least. I can't lie...I loved Origins and Odyssey, both of which made me more interested in their settings, which is one of the highest compliments I can pay any game.

I enjoyed RYSE but it was a little too much on rails for me. An open world RYSE would be incredible.

Thanks for the reminder about RYSE...meant to pick it up as I noticed it in the sales for only $2.99...picked it up now.  I had it for the XBOX when it first came out, but never got far....can't remember why, hopefully it wasn't because I didn't like it:)

I enjoy it, but Gus is right about it being on rails. It is very story driven. But maybe that's why I like it because with so many open-world type games it was a nice change to really follow the narrative and just play the story. Its' as I previously said my go-to when I just want to do some short hack-and-slash skirmishes with bots in the Colosseum in Rome with the different arena settings. And those bots ganging up on you make fight progression hard.

Also, the big Roman amphibious landing and assault on the fortress early in the game is really fantastic. There have been some rumors floating around about a sequel in the last year. Graphically it's also one of the best-looking games ever. I guess that's no accident since the devs also did Crysis.

My big wish for the AC series is that they will go to Japan and do a Ninja-themed version. I guess they could throw in some Samurai stuff as well. There was a famous Ninja-Samurai in that period whose name escapes me now. I'll have to look him up in one of my Ninja history books.

Musashi?

JH has been asking for a Medieval Japanese AC for at least a decade.

I remember that amphibious sequence is RYSE and agree it is great. I don't remember if I ever finished that game.

Got any links to the rumors of a sequel?

Thanks, for $3 not a big risk to me:)  I'll give it a shot later today...thanks again.

Gus, yeah some guy on YouTube was talking about what an underrated game it was and mentioned the rumors. He goes over RYSE in some detail. I think the video was done this year. Sorry, I don't remember the ID as its' been a couple months since I watched it. I think if you just search on "RYSE" you can probably locate it.

Just tried YouTube and typed in Ryse Review. There are quite a few vids posted on the game in the last 3-7 months. Can't recall which one mentioned the rumors or maybe it was my wishful thinking?

Anyway, one is by Math Chief- The Best of Gaming, another one is Just Gaming 4 Fun with a strange character in a mask talking about it. And one more named Ryse: Son of Rome by Input Source.

Most of the comments seem to echo mostly of how I feel about the game both good and bad. As I said though it's the combat and beauty of the game that I love. You really feel like you're playing a character in an epic Hollywood Roman Movie.

Weird that there has been that much chatter about it in the last 6 months...

Speaking of these types of games: Does anyone remember a game for the PS2 called "Shadow of Rome?" That was a great game with lots of gladiator combat in the arena. And another one which was the Total War guy's foray into game consoles which I believe was called "Spartan: Total Warrior?"
