Title: Favourite game concepts that have actually become or are becoming games?

What are your favourite game concepts that have actually become or are becoming games?
I was thinking recently that I have a growing list of games that are finished or almost finished by todays standards. Games that I want to play and love the concept of. Games that are the best of breed at this point in time.

I am not talking about games that you like historically or come back to. I am talking about the growing number of games you like or want to like in both concept and potential today. More about the idea of the game and it being something you have always wanted to explore. Games that represent a stellar leap forward towards what you want to play. Things that are innovative. I don't mean quaint or cute little games. But games with real vision. Games that would be best of breed for a vision you have had. An experience you have wanted in a game. I guess they need to have features that other games do not have and advance the realism or gameplay in some way that is ground breaking. OR WILL. The game does not have to be perfect or even finished. Just in development and hopefully likely to succeed soon or already has.

Mine currently would be:

DCS
Naval Action
Post Scriptum
Star Citizen
Steel Division
War Of Rights

One of the games in development that most intrigues me is Military Operations, despite the totally uninspired title:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/821680/Military_Operations_Benchmark/ (https://store.steampowered.com/app/821680/Military_Operations_Benchmark/)

The concept here blows me away. Detailed OOBs, ability to draw up plans on the operational level and then transition seamlessly down to the units on the ground, scope that appears to span most of Western Europe. It's kind of like Steel Division (or what I imagine/hope Steel Division 2, with its much-needed operational level, will be) to the 10th power.

However, I do have a healthy amount of skepticism that a very small, indy dev team can pull off a game this ambitious and genre redefining.  I'm pulling for them all the way, but I'm not hugely optimistic.

Perfect example. I also don't see anything concrete enough to play. But a great concept.

Hi,

I fully agree with MilOps.

Something I am wondering about is the overall aesthetics in combination with a "line drawing" order system as in UG: Civil War.  I wish there was a WWII or WWIII style game with this; although I can't seem to reconcile the simple order giving with my demand for complexity at the same time, i.e. order sequencing, different postures etc. But this engine and a WWII title with more unit complexity and fleshed out FoW would be something.

Then I am always thinking back to HPS titles like PoI and Decisive Action. I would love to see a more "generic" (blue vs red) style wargame that plays a bit more with the idea of having a staff. I liked to click around in PoI2 and just check out the staff screens, really gave me the feeling that people are working for me and provide me with staff products to help me make decisions. I would love to see that make a comeback. But please without that click load and bug fest...

And then there is this entire notion of Kriegsspiel style games. Classical multiplayer is interesting, but I would like to see wargames that start to really allow players to play above and below each other and incentivise increased communication.   I think it was General-Staff that wanted to introduce something similar, although I might be wrong.

Cheers,

A

I feel DCS, CLoD, BoX cover a lot of my interest in aircraft.  Naval action was promising, but I seem to have lost interest.  Post Scriptum and Vanguard seem like good approaches to FPS with a realistic flavor -- Steel Division nice but far from the army or corps or division-level game I would like to see where you role-play the commander and get phone-calls from STAVKA or Ike or Alan Brooke or Montgomery or Bradly or Patton or Rumstead or Rommel or Model or Grazzini or Wavell or MacArthur.

Meng...have you checked out Decisive Campaigns: Barbarossa? It seems similar to what you are describing.

I did, but it wasn't a the Front, army, corps or division level...or that wasn't its main focus.  Also I was thinking more day-to-day or hour-to-hour and you'd have to remember to get rest and check on your subordinates and replace them or whatever.  Or go to your advanced post to avoid phone calls.
