Title: Hot For FRIDAY
Post by: MetalDog on April 10, 2020, 06:20:21 AM

Folks of a certain age might remember this little ditty fondly. ;)

This weekend will be returning PBEM turns in 4 different Field of Glory:Empires games.  Along with many duels in MtG:Arena.  There will also be Civ IV BtS mp.  A full weekend.  And don't forget the Easter Bunny!  That is, if Covid 19 didn't get him.  Happy Easter, grogs!!

I use to love VH (saw Van Hagar when I was in HS, I believe the Balance tour as the wheels were starting to fall off) how ever they and Aerosmith are two bands that I use to love but now listening them is like nails on a chalkboard.

I still appreciate them but it's hard to listen to them anymore.

Anyway, gaming wise probably some more Oxygen Not Included, The Outer Worlds and Borderlands 3.

On the table I want to try start Legacy of Dragonholt with the Jawas and I should be getting Too Many Bones today for a solo treat.

Too classic to have never been done.

Lol.  Junior High fave for me - and much like anyone else, once I got 1984, I started going through the back catalog of VH stuff and loved it.  Kinda with Jamus34 in that I just can't really enjoy them at this point.

Gaming?  Hah!  What's that?

I had a childhood friend who loved Van Halen.  We'd go over to his house and listen to that album whilst he sparked up a bone.  I never tried though.  Well only if there were girls around who were into that stuff.   8)

Probably the greatest and most dangerous video a 12 year old boy could ever see.

Probably more Diablo III, and then from there gearing up for some ancients with Field of Glory II, Rome Total War 2: Empire Divided and AssCreed: Odyssey.

Great song from middle school years! I think my favorite VH song is Unchained. His guitar to open that song rocks.

As for gaming this weekend, I will be playing Crown of Glory: EE to go along with a book I'm reading on Napoleon's Polish Campaign.

Been playing more than usual these days!

Just completed a full Campaign of Aggressor: Ancient Rome (being the Ptolemic Empire) but lost to Rome (Carhage was the other big nation). Was encouraged to dive again into this game as i am doing some translation and testing for the sequel: Imperiums.

Also played a lot of Interstellar: Space Genesis, nice game.

Plan for the weekend:

- Polaris Sector
- Napoleon: Total War

Maybe some Stellaris.

Also will do some testing of Ten Crowns.

Rome has better troops than every other nation.  You have to knock them out of the game pretty early to have a chance to win a military victory.

Definitely.  And technically, I have two odd memories of the early 1970s to contribute:
1) wasn't it supposed to be sort of heroic to have a bone to spark?
2) I learned to hate Minimalism and Progressive Jazz while pursuing Margaret, my favorite teacher ever (who knew such a hippie would have so much Progessive Jazz and so much bare empty floor space and such large speakers?  Who knew being so absolutely ultimately cool could be so tedious?  It was like "Norweigian Wood" with a vengeance all over again...I had to detox with the Beatles for weeks sweating in a half abandoned basement)

Thankfully, this weekend I will be playing Hell Let Loose and being extremely uncool.

Curiously enough the monster speakers in question were actual electronic devices with woofers taller than a (small?) man.  As for her accountrements in general, I don't particularly remember her "speakers" per se ...She was just absolutely built right all over and quite tall and had almost no furniture (at least in the "two big bay window" rooms which were the only part of her house I was ever in.   :'(

Alas, no links yet. Apparently still in testing. We'll see them when we see them.

I'm just glad to hear an Aggressors sequel is coming. I haven't played it much, but I liked it enough to actually be wondering yesterday if it ever sold enough to justify financing a sequel. I'm glad for the devs at the very least!

I didn't have so much problems with Rome but Carthage did. They lost most of Spain fast in the end of the game.

How does Aggressors compare to something similar like Field of Glory: Empires?  I'm thinking of grabbing it since the quarantine has me justifying buying new games left and right.   :))

Title: Re: Hot For FRIDAY
Post by: JasonPratt on April 10, 2020, 05:49:47 PM
The primary differences:

Size -- FoG:Emp has more 'spaces', and covers a wider map range.

Factions -- ditto for FoG.

Combat -- both run automatically, although FoG has a nice way of illustrating this. However, FoG:Emp allows any battle to be exported to Field of Glory 2 (only the base game is required for this, none of the expansions) so that you can turn-based tabletop your fight. I have rarely done this, but it works fine.

Tech -- strictly speaking Agg has more of this, I think. Technological upgrades are more under-the-hood in FoG:Emp.

City upgrades -- FoG:Emp has more; they are a core game mechanic.

Map management -- Agg is the strong winner here, including with (primitive) terraforming options.

Logistics -- both games have a good logistic engine, implemented somewhat differently. Your armies need supply in each game, not merely gold pay for upkeep. You have some more flexibility about defying this fact in FoG:Emp (i.e. running your forces when out of supply).

Random map generator -- Agg has this; FoG:Emp doesn't.

Mods -- Agg has this, including user-made maps, and including tools for making your own maps and setups. FoG:Emp, very much not.

Diplomacy -- I think FoG:Emp has the definite edge there now, but previously Agg did.

Multiplayer -- Agg has no mp; FoG:Emp has very good mp, running Matrix's upgraded PBEM++ engine (now capable of more than two players.)

Aggressors is very much a Civ-style game, with hexes (not irregular regions like FoG). It has some different mechanics than a basic Civ-style game, but if you're familiar with the genre, you should feel somewhat at home immediately.

Fog:Emp is more like a(n older) TotalWar-style game, except no real-time battles.

Been playing around with "Generation Zero"...reminds me of one of the later Far Cry games....without the vehicle choices.

Very atmospheric, beautiful, detailed, huge world. Set in rural Sweden in the 1980s. Its you against a hoard of mechanized warriors. Stealth, sniping, tactical approach and hunting skills are needed. I'm not much of a twitch jockey...and this game allows me to run at my speed.  Scout an enemy strong point. Find a good perch, snipe a few robots and vanish into the woods before they figure out where you were.

Sure, if you want a more direct approach, there are hand grenades and SMGs, but where is the fun in that?

Does have some "fast travel" and allows you to ride a bicycle...but otherwise you walk. A few interface quirks are somewhat irritating...but soon forgotten. Overall, a bunch of tension and fun.

I'm probably as familiar with the game as anyone here.  The update is mostly for modders.  It has a lot of things in it that allow modders to do a lot of things more easily.  The update is free if you have the game.  As far as I can tell, there is no DLC for the game on Steam.

The term "bone" makes it a bit tricky.  Technically (at last in the West in the early 1970s) a bone was the most potent, heavily sucked upon last portion of the joint...requiring some permission from the group to either leave it, or become the most high.  Since weed was actually pretty mellow in those days as a rule, the bone had a more theatrical than real potency.  It was a possible honor or a minor point of correct behavior to note its passing or retention.

What do you think of Diablo III? I just picked up Diablo III: Eternal Collection on sale at the PS4 store for 20 bucks. I figured I could not go wrong with that price because the collection includes the Reaper of Souls expansion and Rise of the Necromancer pack.

Stay safe, Grogs!

Brand new game! SWEET. I need it now, though  :-[

Groggy - loving Diablo III for a good stress reliever. Been playing for about a month on and off, and now in Act III, at level 50 Necromancer.

The fantasy combat here is awesome. If you want to shut your brain off for an hour and burn shit down...there's nothing better.
