That's 'The Thing' from '82 or so, right?

Staggerwing

Yep, a true classic.

I've yet to see the prequel. I'm not expecting lightning to strike twice but is it at least passable?

Nope.  The only good bit is right at the very end when they tie it in to the original.  The rest is utterly formulaic empowered woman (tm) vs CGI monster crap.

BanzaiCat

Pretty much what SDR says.

I couldn't remember if I'd seen it or not, it's that bad. I found it online and watched a few minutes just now and realized, 'oh yeah.' That's sad when you can't remember if you actually saw a movie or not.  :-[

Cool map. I was in Winnipeg when Mt Saint Helens went up. Next day we had about 1-3 mm of ash fall out over everything. Neat and scary all at the same time.......

I'd say if you're inside the purple you're screwed.

Of course, that doesn't include the nuclear winter that would set in for a few years.
All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

Mr. Bigglesworth

Not buyin it. The ash would be far more distorted to the east for 2 reasons:
-the jet stream
-the historical pattern. The last big one has been studied. It was dug up in about a 45 degree oblong to the SE.
