Design elements humble and spare make a powerful impression at St. Henry's Ecumenical Art Chapel in Turku, Finland. Conceived by the Helsinki firm Sanaksenaho Architects, the structure consists of a single slender volume with curved walls that converge dramatically overhead in a steep pitch. (Its shape was inspired by the Christian fish symbol.) Pine planks form virtually every surface of the arklike interior, whose ribbed sides accentuate the sense of perspective that draws one's gaze toward the front of the church. There, vertical expanses of glass bathe the unadorned altar in sunlight, providing a luminous focal point for worship.

Keeps the snow off the roof pretty well, too.

Yeah. It wastes a lot of material while presenting a huge wind sail. A catenary is the optimum figure for a self supporting roof.

simplicity of design is hardly wasteful but it does cost more to pull off because of the engineering.

The church where I grew up has a similar design. It makes for a dramatic entrance and is quite pleasant.

The point of the arch is a reminder of Gothic imagery. God would actually prefer the catenary. The tech was not known back in Gothic times. It is stronger, uses less material, most importantly will cost less to heat, will resist wind better, will keep the airy, to the heavens, feel.
