Handsome Devil, 26 and strangely unmarried, with a court of fools (more on that later). So......... the original plan was to make a few friends, start a family, settle down, kill some Muslims, and that evil b**** my sister decides she wants a piece of Leon. Martok - apologies, missed your first question with regards to the muslims and my starting strength - it seems that since patch 1.06 the muslims are much more unified - there was a time you could go get single provinces and whittle the moors down one by one, it appears now that you pick a fight with one, you pick a fight with all - or at least a good portion - the trick here will be to wait til fighting breaks out between themselves or another nation and then jump in and grab their lands, whilst theyre off fighting else where. This may have to be my tactic for the brothers as well - we all have similar sized armies, probably Galicia been the biggest - the one issue here is if theyre fighting moors you get a -100 piety hit for attacking them whilst theyre muslim bashing, OR go get a big ass mercenary army to come and do the job, so its a race to the cash vault then..........

Well, its time to kick my brothers ass, spurred on mainly by his total lack of ability to hold onto his own lands, i must not let all of Galicia fall into Muslim hands. Bishop Muno - a good man, hes the only one on the council to be called friend and he seems capable enough. The only thing i cant do with a regent is change laws and im not changing any for a while. For now Alfonso is spoon fed soup whilst his army mops up Fat Pedro and this time throw him in jail - hes stripped of his Count rank, and left to the loyal prison guards - he says one thing, one thing about the comfort down there and hes going to be a head shorter than he was before he complained

He's still rabble rousing and stirring dissention, particularly in Galicia, as an attempt at an RPG and to have Alfonso honourable (apart from maybe the cousin thing!) it galls me to consider the Kinslayer option but i need Leon to start to work as one to tackle the Muslims, and lets face it he's not long for the world, how long is Kinslayer going to be a bad stat for a man who drools all day?

Holy war you say? General Haigh of WW1 wasnt the first to throw troops into the meat grinder without pity you know. This was Alfonso's first prodding of the muslims - id seen the disadvantage of the full scale Holy Wars and territorial wars for lots of land, so far theyve all turned out to be inconclusive, long, protracted affairs with little success - i give you Castille and Galicia as evidence. What Alfonso needs to do is 'smash and grab', take as little land as fast as possible - in doing so we can pick off the independants and the 'one territory' kingdoms and grow Leon this way. This was the first try and it worked, its very unnerving towards the end as more and more muslim armies are drawn into the fight and march toward you - but as long as you can get a 100% warscore before they get there then you can agree terms with the defeated and watch the imposing armies disappear into the mist - the fights over Omar - youre too late, and all this land is mine son!!!

There it is 'Calatayud' just south of Zaragoza, it comes with 3 titles, the Count of the land itself, the mayorship of the town of Alhama De Aragon, and the Bishopric of Piedra. My new spymaster is made the count, my steward is made the mayor and the Bishop Chancellor receives the bishopric and me some piety and 3 new vassals.

So heres the new board - Bishop Muno dredging up a false claim in Zaragoza - next smash and grab target - need to top up the 'Mercenary Piggy Bank' first and then choose from the list of Europe's 'Pillage a Village' Winners 1081 to take with me to battle. He's dredging up a false claim for the land as opposed to using the De Jure Cassus Belli ruling (which means it used to be Spanish and therefore were allowed to fight for it back) because if i take it back through De Jure i have to keep the current landowner but he becomes my vassal as opposed to the previous liege, and i doesnt feel right trying to recapture Spain from the muslims whilst having them in my court and paying me taxes. I give him 7/10 - he gets the job done but id like a higher diplomacy skill eventually
Mayor Lope of Beja, the Martial - hes Alfonso's guardian at the moment, im hoping to try and knock some martial skills into him 6/10
Arias the Steward - it doesnt say so but im sure hes alcoholic - always brings in the cash and an occassional bonus from Leon 7/10
Fernando the Spymaster - sigh, really? 10 for intrigue this is the best we can do? 4/10
Chaplain Egas - he kicks ass in Rome, always getting piety bonuses and the Pope loves Leon

Target number 2 - the shining city of Zaragoza - we plan a smash and grab with the Saxon Company and hope we can get in and out before any of the big guys can jump in. Im not bothered by Albarracin, Leida or Urgell - these guys are all small army nations and will be Leonese before the turn of the century - my main concern is the Dhunnunid empire to the West - the eradicators of Castille. The clever/infuriating thing about CK2 is you cant move your troops to the border and declare war, you cant have any armies in the field when you declare war - so if i declare on Zaragoza i have a race to the city before the Dhunnunids either come to its defence or siege a retaliatory town.

This is just bad timing by the boy King Osorio of Navarra - i have to refuse, Holy Wars will pull in all the Muslims as opposed to De Jure wars which only pull in allies (this is the pay off to counter my last point about De Jure - with De Jure you get the vassal be it Muslim or not, with Holy war you get the land as yours but it pulls in everyone - swings and roundabouts). Dammit - more bad timing but this in a good way. I get the claim on Porto that allows me to advance down the West coast of Galicia but it costs me money - the one resource im short of - piety is good, prestige is good (despite just spending 250) but money - not so good. It costs 75 to hire the Saxon company and they charge 7 a month for their nefarious services - i like to keep another 75 in the bank to pay their fees, and therefore look to have at least 150 in the bank before marching off to war - this takes me just to that limit but i cant refuse the claim as i want Porto.

2 years after declaring war im still in Zaragoza, not the swift capture i was looking for but there has been no attack in earnest from any of the other Muslims - thankfully theres all sorts of civil war going on in the south of Spain. The war was only for Zaragoza, upon its capture i should have received a warscore of 100 as that would be all my enemies lands, but the sneaky Muslim went off and took the Urgell capital to the East, i march over there and take that too (it wont be part of the war prize) and still the score is only 83. He must have another patch of land somewhere but im damned if i can find it, the war continues..........................

A bit random but there is good reason - this is me building Jimena Incorporated. At the minute the council is quite weak, and the court isnt much better. I have scoured the earth for high stat ladies who are good with intrigue, diplomacy and stewardship, and indeed one with 19 for martial skills - it works on 2 levels. These ladies as members of my court will be able to tutor the Jimena offspring in their talents. Married also to the burly men of my realm they will produce fine children who hopefully will receive the skills of their mothers and be promoted to the council - always thinking and planning me, always thinking and planning ;)

i think its an enhanced EU3 map that they decided to use - the first game was a 2d map.
This is just vanilla 1.06b (the most upto date patch)
In terms of play its more about character progression and wanting to set goals for your empire/duchy and character. There is a guy on the CK2 forums saying he just doesnt get it, he loves HOI3 so he bought CK2, he waits, he arranges marriages, he fabricates claims, he gets married, he kills people and grows bigger and says 'what next', 'what am i missing', hes trying to win the game, not play it. If you like EU3 youll know its not about taking over the world, its about the small goals for your state - first across the ocean as Portugal, unifying Germany etc.
Im pissed my current king is a total loser, i found him a Danish princess, i want them to have kids that work! ive brought in tutors, im concerned my muslim neighbours are growing too big, my AI brothers have died fending them off - theres literally only me left from my dynasty with land of my own, do i get it back for my brothers or take it for myself - these are the decisions and that only covers the next 2 hours gameplay, what else will happen, France is encroaching into Iberia, the HRE has just arrived - if you can immerse yourself in your nation and character its perfect, and i think its an exceptional game
more AAR later, ironically enough im not at work today, and therefore its harder to play (dont ask!!)

The HRE enter the Muslim bashing business, they take Navarra and one province of Castille and stop the super power that was becoming the Dhunnunid Empire. Short terms goals are in the East, Albarracin, Urgell and then Soria to bridge the two kingdoms together. In the West, the remaining 3 provinces of Portugal - Coimbra, Braganca and Castello Branco and possibly the total removal of the Aftasids altogether.

Lidiya was one of the European intelligencia i brought to court to be a tutor for the children of the court, she married a Leonese courtier, and obviously took an instant disliking to me or the Queen. It was a very quick plot which leads me to believe it had a lot of backers which means there a load of scheming bastards in court - once the plot has been successful it disappears from the plot list - if i ever knew about it at all. Im curious about the motive - is it to marry me, disrupt the line of succession, genuine dislike or was she hired by the Queens brother who had just been knocked off the line of Danish succession by her? - intrigue-arama!

My boy needs a mentor - fortunately he has no negative traits as yet, hes dispatched to the martial for some kickassery and sword play lessons - if he comes back a thrifty clerk ill kill him myself.
I scour the court for all kids in need of an education and match their fledgling stats to the appropriate foreign tutor i brought in (a budding skill in diplomacy is matched to the high scoring Diplomacy tutor, intrigue to intrigue etc etc.) - except Lidiya for obvious reasons!

2 factors come into the equation - your intrigue score (yours + the spymasters and any other enhancements) and the strength of the plot - so in this case, my terrible intrigue versus a pretty strong plot - off she runs - the same is the calculation for a successful assisssnation - i need a new spymaster before then

ive gone through the council and the court and awarded them to those with the highest loyalty - i figured that was pretty realistic, i cant imagine handing out lands to an enemy or someone who was plotting your downfall. The new landowners only increase their favourability of you by 20 so its not that good for turning round a potential plotter.
Those in the court with the highly skilled wives will have to stay as once they leave the court they cant be used as tutors - or certainly cant be made to be tutors - as a courtier you get no choice, as the wife of a count 500 miles away you can say no!

thanks guys - this one isnt dead in the water - i just wanted to really get immersed in the Parma one for the front page. Theres 2 updates for Leon waiting for a write up
Ok, thanks to you guys my eyes have been opened to playing as a count and starting from the bottom. The front screen AAR continues on a pace as Parma, but im going to start a new personal game as a Count as i feel the main building blocks of starting as a King in Spain have been covered here.
Ill start a new thread soon in an attempt to unify Germany as Brandenburg, see if i cant get me an Emporers crown
