Title: My Trumpeter 1/35 Challenger II
Post by: JudgeDredd on February 10, 2013, 09:37:44 AM
I need help please.

I am a "virgin" when it comes to making ground vehicle models...and I'm not sure of the colour I've started with.

In the pic you can see I've used the less "sand" looking of the paints - but I'm not sure that's the right colour I'm using. The paint I'm using seems more "pinK" like the SAS used in WWII in the desert

So - am I using the wrong colour?

there should be a paint guide in the instructions that tells you the paint number for testors and humbrol.

Post by: JudgeDredd on February 10, 2013, 02:49:06 PM
Well - there are numbers surely - but I don't know what they refer to.

like "H 313 313" with the first number being a black number on a white background and the right hand number white on a black background. It says next to it "Sand Yellow" - but the number doesn't relate to anything Humbrol do - which only goes up to 250.

I bought 2 Humbrol enamel colours - Desert Sand (250) which looks like the pink colour and Brown Yellow (94)...no "Sand Yellow" exists in the Humbrol range - hence my confusion.

When I bought the tank I looked around and pretty sure someone mentioned using Brown Yellow. I've started to paint it in the Desert Sand and definitely don't think it's the correct colour (though would be spot on if I was making a LRDG "Pinky")

I'll give the brown yellow a go and if it's no good, I'll have to look for something else...maybe even mixing a bright yellow with white to pale it a bit.

so I guess as long as your in the ballpark the color is good to go.  you can base coat with one color and salt the second.

+1

Since I've picked up painting historical minis I've learned a bit about color.

There are - somewhere I'm sure - formulas for the original exact color match. The problem is that I'm not sure which, if any, companies actually use them. Tamiya's color for late German panzers is slightly different than Vallejo's. Muddled into the mix for anyone without the true formula is that any existing color photographs may not have represented the exact tone due to processing issues. Further issues like weathering would have caused the paint to fade over time. In addition, the Germans used a rust-red primer color which also would have affected the color.

All of this, I'm sure, Star could tell you with greater authority than I.

Suffice it to say that as long as you have something close you'll be fine. Don't sweat it.

Looking forward to watching this Project JD!.. One of these days I'm gonna break down and open a kit myself.. lol.. I've got plenty to choose from if I choose to. Surprised the wife hasn't complained, about that.. two shelves full down cellar and I haven't touched a model in like 6 years!

Progress for modelling is so slow in the winter because of the bad light and my eyes. I do have a desk lamp, but that seems to hinder more than help.

So I only really get any work done on Saturdays and Sundays - and only if the rugby isn't on - which it is for the mo.

Got a free weekend this weekend with no rugby though - so apart from a couple of bike rides, I should have plenty of time to do some work.

I am finding model IFV's much more laborius - and patience sapping - than aircraft. So SO many little bits - working out what should be painted before assembly etc...

Also I have to repaint the pieces I've already painted - and may have to again if the colour doesn't seem right.

Questio for anyone who's done AFV's...things like the "machanical" bits the wheels go on (suspension?) - I was thinking they probably wouldn't be painted sand coloured - but likely remain black with a metal look...yes? No?

But - enjoyable.

everything gets painted.  but dont stress over it to much as armor gets coat after coat of paint in real life.  build the model, get a first coat of paint on it and then worry about corrections later.  there are quite a few tricks you can pull at that point.

any armor vehicle you paint shoud be base coated in floquil oxide red or boxcar red paint.

FYI all Floquil spray paints are awesome.  its made for small scale railroad modeling so the actual paint is of a very fine grind.  its very deep color wise, reacts well to weathering and covers to scale.

I could be wrong but it looks like the Boxcar Red one is already in a small spray can under pressure:

Well - I've been putting this off for ages now.

The sand colour I bought and tried (shown in the picks) wasn't the correct colour. I had also purchased a yellow and I was pretty sure that was too yellow.

Today I decided to just paint it normal Western Europe Camo (green and black) - and having started that - I wasn't too keen on that either - so I've ordered a Pale Stone colour. That's the last one I'm going with. As soon as I get that, I'm back in the modelling seat.

I'm not into paint mixing so I wasn't up for toning down the yellow I had with white - which I could've done - but then there' the worry about not making enough, having to mix more, getting the econd mix wrong etc, etc

Pale Stone is what I'm going with. If that doesn't work, then I'm back to the green and black and that's it.

I've never bothered with hangups on paint before - I'm surprised I'm letting this bother me. In the past, I would've used the yellow!

dont worry about the colors.  any color can be modified with filter washes (very very thinned down paint) or weathering and mud.

white dwarf this month ahs an issue on spray guns - for those painting models with one base colour - blood nagels/imperial fists - the guy finished 10 in like 5 mins - admittedly theres shading and detail and washing but 10 space marines base coated in their armour colours in minutes - so very nearlly tipping to a purchase!
Title: Re: My Trumpeter 1/35 Challenger II
Post by: JudgeDredd on April 21, 2013, 12:34:24 PM
wow. I am mightily bored with this. Totally uninspired.

After failing on colour choice I gave it a go anyway...turned out it looked like a "pinky" from WWII...not the right colour at all. I then decided to just do it in Western European camo....so I repainted the bits I had painted...and hated the look.

I then bought what actually looks like a decent colour. I re-painted the re-painted green bits (third time!)...and those needed another coat. So I've just gave them another coat (4th time!!) and I am very, very bored. The paint seems to have thickened and is going on really horribly. I'm really not happy with the look at all.

I have to say my first foray into AFV's has not been my best experience and so far it seems like I might not be bothered to finish this one...nevermind revisit the AFV modelling world.  :(

Sorry - but this may not get finished.

Well...I was bored the other day - but I'm sure I'll stick as it. The Challenger II is a beautiful AFV - I can't not finish it. I was just so bored with painting wheels the other day - 4 times and 8 coats! Same with the base.

Doing armour actually has shown me this would be a lot easier if I had a spray gun...maybe this year?

You can buy spray cans of base coat. Tamiya paints are awesome. A bit pricey, but very much awesome if you don't have an airbrush.

if you can find them use Floquil spray cans.  theyre made for small scale train models and the pigments are ground really fine so the paint scales better.

The paint I'm using seems (is!) a bit pale - but I didn't want to go mixing paints just to end up with more paint that wasn't right. So I'm using what I've got which I believe is Humbrol Pale Grey

my pleasure.  :)  fyi  if you go down the pastel path dont worry about getting the specific weathering sticks.  just go to a Michaels or Hobby Lobby and get the cheap stuff.  same effect less cost.

I've been putting this off - mainly because it's almost time for weathering and I'm not sure how it's going to turn out. It's not like a plane - there's lots and LOTS of nooks and crannies so I'm not sure my weathering solution will work.

I think I need to read/watch some guides on it using pastels (which my daughter has)

well.....

dont sweat the process.  the nice thing about weathering is that you can always go back over it with washes of your base color..  and the nice thing about pastels is you can always remove it with a q-tip.  ;)

Latest - not much work - things are slow because the light is so bad. Yes - I do have lights in my room, but it's still not conducive to scale modelling

Damned Humbrol Matt Black paint I bought turns out looking Gloss!!

I'm fine tuning the painted bits. I've decided I'll probably leave the skirts off the bottom of the "wheel armour plates"...I like having some of the wheel on show. Besides, they look like a terrible fit.

I've finished adding a couple of minor sections and will likely have the "tidied" version done at the weekend so I'll post some pics, then it'll be on with the clear, on with the decals, on with the Humbrol Matt (hopefully) varnish and on with the weathering

dont worry about the gloss.  in fact dont worry about the sheen of any of the paints as you are going to put a flat topcoat over everything when its done.  I recommend using the Floquil brand clear coat.  I used to have cans of laquer stuff from Germany that was using in furniture finish repair.  they can in yellow cans with red tops.  amazing stuff, Ill see if I can find it online.
