Title: 5th Annual NCAA Tournament Bracket Challenge
Post by: bayonetbrant on March 13, 2016, 07:10:44 PM
Hey guys, here's the thread for this year's NCAA Tournament Bracket Challenge

Here's the page to enter your bracket (http://games.espn.go.com/tournament-challenge-bracket/2016/en/group?groupID=1129590)

The group is up - we're "Grogheads 2016" and the password is nowolfpack   :'(

It's set for 2 entries / person, but that's only so I can create the usual "Straight Chalk" bracket that lets you compare against the tournament seeding.  Anyone entering 2 'legit' brackets will have both DQ'ed.

No idea what the prizes will be, but we'll come up with our usual "something" out of the grab-bag

I'll post daily updates each morning after games are played starting Friday 3/18

You have to sign in to ESPN, and there should be a button to "join group" toward the bottom.

Go Heels!
Beat Dook!

I'll find the time to make a bracket.

This could be the wildest NCAAs yet.  There have been more #1s this year than in the last 15 years.  The current #1 seeds have the highest number of combined losses of any four #1 seeds in my lifetime.  There are fewer dominant teams this year.

I've entered.  Pretty conventional picks - which is unlikely to work given the number of losses the top 16 seeds all have.

Dook still sucks.

It's time to regain my rightful spot.  You and your ilk have occupied it long enough.  I ask that you please wash it before returning it.

Seriously, I went a little upset crazy this year.  We'll see how that plays out.

Good luck to everyone.

Picking Dook to make the final 4 was like making a pact with Satan.  THAT is the only reason for your unexpectedly poor performance this year.  MSU and Arizona were mere symptoms of the Dook evil.  Please repent while there is still time.

Quite a few of the remaining teams are higher seeds.  Therefore, a greater probability of winning.

At first I thought Pct did mean Pct right but 40 cent has a 99 Pct and he has lost at least 5 out of the 32 games so that can't be it. Then I thought it meant Pct of winning but straight chalk has the most potential points remaining but has the lowest Pct by a long shot so that doesn't make sense either.

I went 4-4 in round 1 for the Midwest bracket.

I only lost 8 games so far, about normal for me in that regard. Unfortunately 4 of those I picked to make it to the round of 8 so there are a lot of future losses guaranteed.

You can get 960 points for just picking all the winners from the round of 8 on so whoever has the most of them remaining has the best shot and it's certainly not me :)

I don't understand how I can have so many more potential points than you. I looked at your brackest and while you are certainly f'd in the mid west all the you have teams alive all the way in the other regions. I think the math is wrong on the site. Or I just don't get what the numbers are showing.

From the FAQ.  I hope key body parts don't fall off for reading the instructions.

QuoteQ: What do PTS, PCT, and RK mean?

A: PTS are the total amount of points that your team has accumulated since the start of the tournament. PCT is the percentage of your performance graded against all other entrants in the game. RK is your numerical rank in the entire field of entrants.

I'm doing well ............... so far.

UNC wins - I win this pool.

UNC Wins and Oklahoma makes it to the final 4, I win the office pool (although I'm tied for 7th there).

Kansas wins - I lose everywhere.

Given the way it is scored, whoever has the most winners from the round of 8 on will win it. The scoring is one reason I don't like this format as well as others. You can hit 32 out of 32 then 16 out of 16 and lose to the person who just has a great round 8 and onward. You get more points for picking 7 winners than you do for picking 48.
Title: Re: 5th Annual NCAA Tournament Bracket Challenge
Post by: Bison on March 21, 2016, 02:03:03 PM
So the key is to pick more winners then losers in the rounds of 64 and 32, which will become the sweet 16 and elite 8.   Or something like that... :)
Title: Re: 5th Annual NCAA Tournament Bracket Challenge
Post by: airboy on March 21, 2016, 02:33:50 PM
The key is picking the actual winner.  Next the right semi-finalists, then the final four.  The first two days are exciting, but the winner of the pool is almost always the one who gets the winner right.  It is almost impossible to lose the ESPN setup if you picked the correct overall winner and nobody else in your pool did.

Indiana Wins - 40 Cent wins.
UNC Wins - I win.
Kansas Wins - one of the 4 guys who picked Kansas wins.  Not sure if any of the Kansas guys are statistically out of it compared to the rest of the Kansas pickers.

40 Cent has done awesomely well so far, but if Indiana loses to UNC he is toast.
If UNC loses to Indiana and Satan's Team makes it to the round of 8, then our dogs are going to hear a lot of angry curses.

The key is to have the winners who advance to the final 4 and the championship game make it. Just winning those 3 games gets you 640 points. Winning all the first round games gets you 320.

I use to be in a pool that had a progressive scoring for the tourney but it wasn't as big as ESPN. it was 1,2,3,4,8,10 as opposed to 10,20,40,80,160,320. It made picking winners in the 1st two rounds have some more value. Now the only ones that really matter are the ones you pick to reach the elite 8.

It will probably come down to the final game. If all the number ones win this weekend Straight Talk will be in the lead. If Oregon and UVA lose you will be ahead. If either of you lose your champ you are probably done. It may be possible for someone else to sneak in as these last games are worth a lot but I think it is down to you two.

Marty - Straight Chalk is what Brant throws in to make the selection committee look good and the rest of us look bad.

But if Kansas wins, Marty wins the pool.  Mighty Marty will have bragging rights for the year.

Sort of.  I don't claim any 'ownership' of that bracket.  I just throw it in to let everyone compare how they did against the tournament committee.

Well down goes Kansas.  They were outplayed all night by Nova.  There were a few bad calls, but it wasn't the deciding factor.  Seldon kept throwing up bricks from the arc and Ellis was no where to be found on the offensive side of the court.  I'm surprised that it'll be the Sooner representing the Big XII in the final four, but they have a good squad and should be a good game between Nova and them.

Its down to 40 cent, OJs Dad and Me.

40 cent and OJs Dad both picked Villanova and Oklahoma to make it to the final 4.  Congrats to both of you on your forecasting.
Each picked a different team to make it to the finals.  UNC has got to make it to the final four and the finals for me to keep my lead.

If Carolina can make it to the final four it has been a great season.  They would have won the ACC regular season and the ACC Tournament.  They would have made it to the final 4 which is awesome most every year.

And Dook sucked.  Even better, the Dook coach rat-boy was caught lying in a national press conference being a jerk.  Rat boy also did not discipline a player caught multiple times intentionally tripping an opponent.  The same player refused to shake hands with the star player of Oregon after the game.  Nice to know that evil dookies remain evil dookies.

UNC wins today and I'm content.  UNC wins it all my wife and I are very, very happy.

You are right about 40 cent. You are only 30 point up on him. He could still win even if NC wins today. If Villanova wins and gets to the final game then NC needs get there too for you to win.

OJ can't catch you even if NC loses today. The most he can gain on you is 160 points. He could finish 2nd though.

In the office pool, I'm a dead man walking despite being in 2nd place with 2 final four teams right.  One of my colleagues picked the entire final 4 right.  He is in the top 1.5% of all brackets - and he picked UNC to win.  Only two people are still alive at the office.  The guy in first and another buddy who picked Villanova to win it all.

"Oh noooooo.

Of the more than three million NCAA Tournament brackets entered on Yahoo, no one's has more points than James Kiki's. He nailed some early upsets. He had seven of the Elite Eight teams correct. He has a perfect Final Four. He is tied with two other people for first overall, just three games away from a $50,000 grand prize. James Kiki will not win. Here is his bracket. He forgot to pick a national champion."

The likelihood of anyone shooting 71% in a NCAA Finals is highly unlikely.  If either team does - it is probably lights out.
Oklahoma shot a miserable 32% from the field.  UNC pounds the ball inside, so shooting that poor would be highly unusual for that type of squad.

UNC shot a "mere" 52% from the field and 82% from the free throw line.

Biggest loss UNC has had for the year is 6 points.

On a completely different but similar note, I watched the women/ladies NIT Championship game the other night. Florida Gulf Coast Univ. which is about 45 miles from my home, vs South Dakota State. FGCU Got beat but it was close. But the thing that amazed me, and I don't want this to sound prejudiced in any way, South Dakota didn't have a single black girl on their team. Even on their bench. I know there's probably not a lot of African-Americans in South Dakota but I never would have thought that it wouldn't even matter to anybody. Maybe the young people are headed for a better world.  O0
