Title: Tamiya 1/48 Sea Harrier wip
Post by: JudgeDredd on August 30, 2015, 08:20:53 AM
It's an old kit, but I was really keen to get a Sea Harrier and this was available at a very reasonable price.

I'm using enamels for hand painting small parts because the Tamiya Acrylics, whilst excellent for airbrushing, are awful for hand painting. That's something I need address - some hand paints. Maybe Vallejo Model or Mr Hobby.

It's slow progress...

Some pretty poor fitting - but I expected this based on how cheap it was

I've used enamels and some dry brushing - that's all I'm doing. I went a bit overboard with the dry brushing on the helmet, so I might take that down a bit.

I'm currently working on the engine and I have some metal (electrical, copper) wire I was going to add to my model, but I can't seem to get it to stick. I've used Tamiya glue, their extra thin and also Superglue...but nothing seems to stick the copper wire to the plastic.

Does anyone have any ideas on what I need to use or how else I should get wire to stick to models?

Thanks

What about a drop of Elmers' style white glue? It will need a little time to dry thought.

Is that PVA? I think I have some so I'll give it a go...thanks.

It seems to require something more substantial than modelling glue or superglue which are very runny.
Title: Re: Tamiya 1/48 Sea Harrier wip
Post by: Staggerwing on September 05, 2015, 09:58:01 AM
Yes, that's the stuff. You can let a gob of it set up a bit before using it so it gets a little tacky, then apply it.

Practice on some scrap pieces first.  ;)

Superglues come in different viscousities.

Also, you might try watering down your PVA to ~50/50 glue/water. It should dry clear(er).

Barring that you might try an epoxy. That stuff will pretty much hold anything.

strip the wires out of their sheathing.

if your going to get more involved in this project you might want to do yourself a favor and replace the exhausts with something much nicer.

I am stripping the wire out the sheathing...but I'm using the wire. Maybe I should just use the sheath.

I think I have some araldite - that will certainly do. I'm not too fussed about the transparency of the glue - I'll be priming and painting anyway.

However - I've cut some plastic sections off a model car I was given (I don't make cars and the guy was going to chuck it - so he knew I would be using it to experiment) and this is the result thus far...but I'm running out of space to fit stuff "on"...it's getting tight in there and I have big thumbs

Bugger. Too late for the intakes.
*edit* - those resin parts are for Airfix. My understanding of after market parts is you do need to buy the parts for the manufacturer you have (though some are cross manufacturer as they are reboxed)

Ah well...I wasn't really going to town on this one anyway. I always said I would be using these few models I'm doing currently to test things. So "enhancing" the engine is not going to end up like the one in the other thread - however, a few extra pieces might help the engine look busier. I'm not going for a replica Pegasus engine...just to make it look busier.

I also said in the past I wasn't really into after-market replacement parts. That will change in the future I'm sure. But for this, I only really wanted to do a bit of work on the rather pathetic looking engine.

Well...I'm going to call it a day on the engine. Like I said - it wasn't meant to look like a real engine - I just wanted to make it look a bit more detailed...and I'm happy I've done that. It will of course be primed, painted and weathered.

Slow going. Too much rugby and gaming.

I tried again to stick some wire on the engine to make it busier, but even araldite wouldn't stick that damn stuff. So I've finished with the engine. It's all primed now and ready to go in the AC

I started priming this weekend and had a nightmare with my Vallejo Primer. I've heard a few people say "it's fine" and alot more say it's a pita...my experience is of the latter. It massively clogged my airbrush. I had to strip it and it took 20 minutes to clean the damn thing properly.

I then decided to try and thin it (of the positives I've heard of this primer, only one or two have actually said they thinned it) but I thinned it too much. My fault...but there's no real way to know when tipping paint into an airbrush and I aired on the side of caution wanting to save myself 20 minutes cleaning the brush again. It came out a bit too runny.

So - I've decided to use Badger primer (great reviews all round from what I see) but I needed a bigger needle/nozzle. As it was going to be £35 for the new .4 needle/nozzle set, I've just decided to get a new airbrush

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00HJ777W6

I like the idea of the trigger as well - I was a bit awkward and uncontrollable with the dual action push down top trigger.

I've yet to examine the "damage" on the model. I may have to prime again.

It came...yeehaaaa

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1160.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq499%2Fwmar1967%2FModels%2FIMAG0501_zpsxn6jh9cl.jpg&hash=f8fdac26acc90268d113bc4f815a27e7d94e9b8b)

It feels great in the hand and I'm hoping for more control over the trigger and therefore the paint and airflow.

The weekend beckons with a big smile!

I don't notice it really. Noisy I guess - but not enough to annoy me or interrupt me watching whatever it is I'm watching at the time.

Way back when... I only used an airbrush for a short while before I left modelling  :(. I had used canned air for my brush as I couldn't afford a compressor at the time... I was about 14.

Me, too. And it was a very cheap airbrush designed for use with the canned air. I think it was one of the situations that taught me that sometimes you do need to spring for better quality equipment to get good results. The cheapy airbrush did OK but I never felt like I got the results I wanted.

JD, that airbrush looks very nice. It will be interesting to see how it works for you.

I'll let you know as soon as I get some free time to use it. It feels great in the hand. Nicely weighted and I definitely feel like I'll get better, consistent spray using the trigger.

So - used the Neo TRN1 last night and it was awesome. Great feel and very controllable. There's a "bite" when pulling the trigger back which tells you pull anymore and you'll be getting paint (only air coming out up to that point)

I bent the end of my needle...being too forceful with a cotton bud cleaning it. So I've ordered a new needle. I'm still learning - what I can say.  :-[

Whilst I was painting at the weekend with my super dooper Iwata Neo TRN1, I spent some time on the Sea Harrier.

I've got some touching up to do where I've been a bit sparse on the Sea Grey, some touching up on the 1000lb bombs where I should've masked more and the engine needs a couple of colours and some wash

Thanks Stagger.

That is exactly what I wanted to hear - I was thinking about using Vaseline or something but wasn't sure how that would react with the paint.

I'll check it out - thank you

Thanks

It is considerably busier looking than the stock part.

I have to laugh really - like I said I was going to just cover it up but once I got into it I wanted to do so much more, but I couldn't get electrical wire to stick.

I have seen a technique recently about melting sprues and pulling them to make antenna - so it's entirely possible I could've made different thicknesses for wires and tubes on the engine.....oh well, next time.

Thanks very much ucg. I think you're being a little too kind - but I appreciate it. Nice to know I'm along the right tracks.

I've seen some amazing work on the ISM website - absolutely stunning. Some with diorama's and some without but the techniques they use are just astounding.

I found out the other day a way of making "chipping" in the paint and wear in the paint scheme - using hairspray!

Some more work today.

I should have done the filling first, but I was originally using this as a testbed for airbrushing so I didn't. As I've put more work into it, I now wish I had.

I'll do some filling and give it another coat or 2 of Dark Sea Grey (I didn't fancy the white/royal blue look) before I fit the bombs and sidewinders (which I have re-sprayed).

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1160.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq499%2Fwmar1967%2FModels%2FTamiya%25201-45%2520Sea%2520Harrier%2FIMAG0597_zpsrmoine21.jpg&hash=ac857c394060852ca15b9537079b1ad7c09eae86)

Some filling required near the cockpit section (possibly - if I can be bothered)
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1160.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq499%2Fwmar1967%2FModels%2FTamiya%25201-45%2520Sea%2520Harrier%2FIMAG0598_zpst324ikuv.jpg&hash=ecdcada2d08d72b5257074f863988b4a4714a69b)

Filling required at the wing joins - which I will do

Ok - I caved and decided the model was worth some extra effort. I'm not huge on sanding and filling, but it kind of needed it...

What are you using for a spray booth? I see the air filter in the back- where are you venting the fumes to?

erm....the room  :-\

There is a filter to keep the nasty particles at bay - but there is an "aroma" around. I'm not doing it for long though. It's not like I'm in the room spraying all day. On average, I probably spray, in total, for an hour...bit here and a bit there.

The "spray booth" did come with an extendable hose - however, it's not long enough to reach the doors or the windows. And besides, it's proper Baltic outside.

I was daft before I started  :buck2:

There's a couple of external bits to attach and the canopy as well as the sidewinders (which look fine) and the 1000lbs bombs (which don't and I need to redo for a 3rd time!!)

So here she is - standing on her own 7 wheels...

What's annoying is I've just discovered (looking at the decals) that before I put the sidewinder holders in place the RAF roundels should've been on - which isn't really feasible given you need to clear coat before applying decals to prevent silvering.

I've also just noticed that a couple of other decals should've been place before assembly - so some decals just won't be put on.

Several coats of Klear applied.

I have to say - for a rather difficult model (awkward) she does look stunning. Not through my work - but as an aircraft and as a scale model of the plane.

I do like the paint scheme also. I wasn't a fan of the box art and the white and blue scheme. The Sea Grey seems more "battle ready".

To do...
Canopy - mask and paint and fix
Decals
1000lb bombs - repaint again, fix to fixings and fix to aircraft
Fit Sidewinders to Harrier
Final coat of Klear
Weather

Ouch - laying it out like that makes it seem like loads more to do.

Kinda lost some detail (gaps between the metal panels).  Or is the plane really that smooth?
Title: Re: Tamiya 1/48 Sea Harrier wip

Well I did minimal filling. I also airbrushed it - so there's not enough paint applied (when airbrushing) to fill panel lines.

I didn't really look tbh. I think it's raised panel lines mostly. Things might "pop out" when I dirty it up a bit.

Some progress at last over the Christmas break.

I've been putting this off for ages because of the number of decals to put on.

She's not looking bad. I'll finish the decals hopefully today or tomorrow, then I will finish the 1,000lb bombs and sidewinders and fit them, give everything a coat of Alclad II Clear Gloss and then apply some weathering to dull her down a bit (she's a bit shiny)

This one is Lt Commander Nigel "Sharkey" Ward (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharkey_Ward) - as I read his book, Sea Harrier Over The Falklands

Good job JD! I think it's just shiny enough to make it look like metal.  O0

Thank you all.

Well...I'm done...in. Literally. This was a bit of a beast from start to finish. Raised panel lines, bad fit, awkward fit, painting issues and the straw the broke the proverbial...really, really bad canopy fit.

The fit was pretty poor throughout needing a fair bit of filler. I did what I could. But not being very experienced at such things, it shows in places. The awkwardness was little bits and pieces that just didn't go on well, making gluing a nightmare.

The painting issues were how I put the model together and how/when I painted. I'm no expert with an airbrush at all, and it showed throughout. Fitting of the Sidewinders resulted in me getting glue on my fat sausage fingers which then "rubbed some white paint of the missile...only for said fat finger to go holding the fuselage at the front and putting a big white stain on it...which obviously couldn't be airbrushed off because of the decals being on now!

On top of that, I had some Humbrol Clear Fix for the canopy. I had forgotten how shite this stuff was. Putting it on just left "contrails" of glue as I pulled the cocktail stick away, resulting in glue on the damn canopy. On top of that, the canopy was an awful (and really awkward) fit.

So that's me done. This is the first modern jet I've done and it was a bear! An old kit too - and the fit and moulding really showed. Is it all the models fault? Absolutely not. A lot was my misunderstanding on how to go about things for doing these...there's so much more to modern jets than WWII fighters or bombers imo.

Anyway - here's the final show. I'm not disappointed with what I did...but I have learned many things in the process that I will take with me to other models (hopefully).

If you look at the front right of the canopy, you can see where the glue got on it :'(

And if you look to the front of the nose, you can see a darker grey patch - where the white paint went and I tried to clean off and cover up  :'(
