I seem to remember reading his remarks on it years later, where he commented that people shouldn't have even had to point to the living family still walking around, and realized it was a joke from the details he used.

He did something similar with a competitor to the Piltdown Man, too. And then pointed out that if readers had put his description of the recovered 'body' together, the would have realized it was blowing them a double raspberry.
