Title: New home library
Post by: Jarhead0331 on November 12, 2019, 11:01:55 AM
The home renovations project is just about finished. FINALLY!

Here is a picture of the new built-in bookcase in my home office. I'll have the desks and computers set-up over the next day or two and will post pics of those when ready. OVerall, I'm really happy with how the work shaped out.

Not bad. It is similar to my setup - I have one wall in my study set up as a bookshelf too. Its almost packed. Need to get another bookcase, on top of the two other standalones I have. I just can't stop buying books.

By all means. For the record...this isn't my "entire library". There is another wall. These are just the new built-in shelves.

Everyone post their pride and joy! Below is mine, taken 5 minutes ago. Behind me is a window, the windows to the right in the image see out to the Hudson River, which is about a mile away. I will probably die in this room.

Very Dickens-ese Gus.  O0   I would never be able to get any work done in there, too many distractions. Great that you cleaned-up all the liquor stains off the desk before you took the pic. Pledge?

I threw her out and took the pic :)

The Wife dripped soup on my damned gaming keyboard and put her frickin' crusty soup mug on my bookshelf. She is such a slob.

Being in my study when I get home from work is a first class ticket to making me an angry drunken dwarf. I use that study to get away from it all.

It's fundamental to us remaining together for the last 22 years!

I believe in the Middle Ages in certain areas of Russia it was permissible to boil your wife in a huge pot but it's never been allowed to fry them in a wok. Go figure. Wok's the difference?  :hide:

Just added another bookcase. It is my 'to-read' bookcase. There are about 75 books in it :/

Better in a case than scattered in piles around the room.

Jarhead - that corner design bookcase was interesting.  We have a similar design in the sun room with shelves going up 8 feet.

We hit "peak physical books" about 10 years ago.  Due to allergies, almost all paperbacks and book club edition books are gone.  Electronic books keep soaring.  And when I retired I tossed 90% of my work related books.

It fluctuates often. At times...80-90%. Then, I might go awhile playing little to no VR, say 10-20%.

For me, 100% no question. I can't imagine flying DCS without it now. It is indispensable. Other VR native titles are amazing, revolutionary gaming experiences, like VTOL VR, Onward and Sariento VR. These games just have to be experienced first-hand in order to understand the difference. This is unquestionably the future of gaming, and probably all forms of human interaction.

I posted this in the interior design thread, but for completeness, here is my new office and also some close-ups of my bookshelves.  Everyone loves seeing what another Grog has in his collection!

I think The_Admiral would approve.

I'm going to bump up the bookshelves size to see if you can read the book titles...

These are my dad's books that I posted about a long time ago.  I can't open the top red and green ones or the spines will break.  The brown ones I can read.  The bottom shelf is his collection of 007 books and my Churchill WW2 collection.

Yes, I try to collect sand from places where I surf.  The Appleton bottle is filled with sand from Carmel Beach in Carmel CA.  The Fiji rum bottle has sand from North Beach on Oahu.

LOL.

Yeah, it's a great sized room.  I'm very fortunate.  I'm just not sure what I'm going to do with that last wall.  I really would like to set up an aquarium, but a long work table would be nice too; somewhere to actually play some of these board games, build some models, write, things like that.

I've got time, no rush.  I'm about over putting Ikea furniture together.

Not sure exactly how to articulate this right now because I am drunk and blasting Metallica, but my cousin is an actual marine biologist who builds professional grade aquariums for wealthy weirdos as a side hustle so...if you're interested I am sure he could help you. He lives in the Tampa/Sarasota area and is 3000 miles away from you but may be able to give you some tips/help digitally/remotely.

Nice set of books.  We have discarded a huge number of physical books due to both of our allergies.  Almost everything is now acid free - which means books I bought in hardback when they were first printed and my statistics/finance/business library.  And cookbooks, lots of cookbooks.  About everything else is gone.

Post by: Toonces on July 14, 2021, 10:07:44 PM
I'd really like to see some more Groghead libraries.

I find a few different aspects of this intriguing.

First, anytime I see anyone being interviewed in their home and there is a bookcase behind them, I inevitably spend the entire time trying to read the spines of their books in the background.  I just find it endlessly fascinating to see what other people consider worthy of retaining as reading material.

Second, along the same lines, we wargamers tend to be pretty well-read.  I'd be curious how many of us have some sort of bookcase of war-related books.  I suspect most, if not all (unless allergies prevent it).

Finally, I watched an interesting video on Netflix or Prime called The Booksellers.  There was one person that said something in an interview during the video that really resonated with me.  The guy was going through an estate sale of books and said that a home library tells you a lot about a person, their intellectual interests and what was important to them, in a way that is very unique.  I find that if you look at my bookshelf photos you get a pretty good idea, just in those pictures, of who I am and what interests me.

Let's get this thread jump-started.  I know my library is not nearly so clean as it was in those pics...looks more like my son's room right now LOL.

Title: Re: New home library

I hear ya.  When I lived in Norfolk, 12+ years ago now, we had 5 (!) bedrooms, one of which was my own personal man-cave room with built-ins.  I had probably 3 times as many books then as I have now, and I"m not exaggerating.  I mean, a totally fucking epic library of books.

Over the years and several moves I've been forced to continually thin my collection to what I have now.  It's tragic.  I had to go to Groton, CT for business about two years ago.  There is probably the best used book store in the world in Mystic called The Book Barn.  Before I left Newport, RI for San Diego, I dropped off 7 (!) big moving boxes of books at Book Barn for like $200...maybe 1/10-1/20 their actual value.  But I knew I'd be going into smaller quarters in San Diego so it had to be done.

Anyway, when I went to Groton I  had an opportunity to hit Book Barn one evening and man alive.  I'm going through their collection and time after time I'm seeing books I essentially gave away and, in any other circumstance, would have bought for myself.  It broke my heart, and I'm not even kidding.

From here on out, you guys are going to have to bury me with my books.  I'll never sell a book again; I'd rather give it away to a friend than to sell it to some thief for a buck.  But...Book Barn's collection is pretty fantastic, and cheap to boot.

First world problems, man.
