Hi All,

We're very pleased to announce the release of the first Gold version of Panzer Campaigns - Smolensk '41 Gold.

The Gold range is a refresh of John Tiller's iconic Panzer Campaigns series and will include all twenty one released titles as well as the Mius '43 demo. Wargame Design Studio has prepared the updates for publishing by John Tiller Software (JTS).

All the Eastern Front titles (eleven in total plus the Demo) have been converted to the new Gold standard and will be available over the next month or so. The Western Front and Mediterranean will not be available till 2018.

The Gold version of Smolensk includes the following updates and upgrades;

For existing owners of the JTS version, there is a free patch available at the JTS website under Updates.
For existing owners of the HPS version, please contact JTS Support so you can receive a free key and a link for the full JTS version.

All new purchases of Smolensk '41 will now be the Gold version.

We're excited to finally get these updates out the door and bring these deep games to a new generation of players.

One of my all time favorite Tiller games.  Still on my hard drive.  Glad to see these games are all getting some love.

Just wanted to say that I sent JTS Support e-mail asking for the key to Smolensk '41 Gold.  They not only sent the key for Smolensk but the keys for my other HPS Panzer Campaign titles to be used when those titles are upgraded to Gold.   :notworthy:

Got my key for Smolensk Gold as well since I bought the original.  I was an alpha and beta tester for John for years after Smolensk and got most of his games for free, so when the rest of the games go Gold I'll probably be buying them rather than asking for another free copy.

Geezer,

Thank you for all your efforts in the past - these are certainly very solid games - thanks to all that contributed.

It was their robustness, that motivated us to upgrade them to a level that would make them a little more attractive to a wider community. The average person rarely is aware of the mods that are turned out and end up having a sub-par experience.

Fortunately John Tiller allowed Ed Williams and Jison to craft a superlative series with the First World War Campaign releases and we're trying to follow their lead and improve Panzer Campaigns. You're now starting to see the first fruits of that.

Finally, there will be a very short wait for the other Eastern Front titles. All are finished and all usually have additional enhancements beyond just graphics and sound.

David

PS As the Gold versions are released, would people like us to post in this one thread or start a separate one for each title?

Thanks Strela.  I'd just put them all here and maybe change the title to reflect the ongoing releases if possible.  That way they all can be seen and stay near the top of the forum in one thread.  But I'm not in charge here so take that with a grain of salt.

Just so great.

Reflect:  This game was released nearly two decades ago.  It is still supported -- well supported -- the company releasing it is giving a significant upgrade to its users for free, and, as far as I can tell, it remains the normative PC simulation of the campaign.

I won't say there's nothing, but there's certainly very little like this in gaming.

And it makes me very happy that these games have found their way into good hands, keeping them alive through upcoming iterations of Windows.

P.S.:  Where has the next WWI game gotten off to?  My enthusiasm to play the Somme has not waned.

Cyrano,

I know Ed and team are hard at work on the next First World War Campaigns title.

My understanding is that it might be a tad earlier than the Somme though.....

I dont really get this ...

Code update – disruption no longer halves movement during the day and is reduced by one third at night.

you are reducing penalty for being disrupted - is that right ?

Yes - we are, but only for movement.

This was first changed in the First World War Campaign series.

The rationale is that disruption is really an organisational impact meaning that combat efficiency is reduced. That means combat calculations and morale levels are reduced. It's a little harder to justify the movement penalty. Units that are disrupted or broken would tend to move with all speed towards the rear if given the chance. If anything they would move back at least as fast if not quicker than a good order unit. So we have decided to adjust as indicated the movement impacts.

This will have a number of impacts on play, but experience to date is positive and it means the defender in particular has a few more options.

Hope that helps,

David

OK - not sure I agree with that - it is not just about how fast they move but how they move to a certain place as a coherent unit. Which I would have thought was a direct impact of being disrupted. I always presumed cohesion was what was being simulated here not how fast can someone run away. Guess will see how it plays out. I have always thought artillery is woefully underpowered in this series but one effect if did have was to disrupt units and affect their movement.

QuoteOK - not sure I agree with that - it is not just about how fast they move but how they move to a certain place as a coherent unit.

It's a very significant change for Eastern Front games where the Soviets have D quality units that would normally only be able to move a single hex when Disrupted.

As Soviet units would often disrupt after just a handful of losses/at their first morale check, Soviet defensive lines tended to collapse quickly and defenders would face destruction in detail through ZOC blocking by the faster German units. The Soviets having the ability to actually retreat is a game changer.

With standardized McNamarra unit values, there's a gap in capabilities between Soviet and German units that can be difficult for the Soviets to overcome. Not losing units (or not having units be fired at over and over as they're retreating hex by hex) as soon as they're Disrupted helps.

It also helps in any scenarios with armoured breakthroughs if the infantry manning the frontline can still retreat 3-4 hexes. That means it will take longer to create a clean breakthrough and that it will require more planning in advance to do so.

I suspect that the change in Disruption effect will be a significant improvement. Now, I wonder if Soviet rifle battalions will be a little less adept at shooting down Luftwaffe planes? When I played Smolensk '41 before, it got to the point that I stopped dive bombing Russian infantry. They always seemed to manage to shoot down 1-2 planes in each sorty and I was losing far more VP's using the Luftwaffe than I was gaining.  :idiot2:

Hi all,

With Christmas passed, we're happy to announce that Moscow '42 has been upgraded to Gold Standard

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.theblitz.org%2Fuploads%2Ffiles%2Ff62%2Fm42_ss0.jpg&hash=f2d5ebd9dac45c92c6099c45a3800d95d9d26df2)

For those that aren't aware, this title covers the historical Soviet 1941/42 winter counter offensive that almost destroyed Heeresgruppe Mitte in front of Moscow. In addition the hypothetical Fall Kreml (Operation Kremlin in English) is included. Operation Kremlin was an extensive deception campaign that the Axis enacted to distract from Fall Blau (Operation Blue) the German 1942 summer offensive in the Ukraine and Caucasus. Essentially this situation considered the Fall Blau forces heading to Moscow, rather than to Southern Russia. This was exactly the operation the Soviets had planned to face in June 1942 and were surprised when the Germans struck further south.

More info on the upgrade here;
http://www.wargamedesignstudio.com/2017/12/27/panzer-campaigns-moscow-42-gold-released/

Here are a few in game shots;

This upgrade is a free patch for all existing Moscow '42 owners and all future purchases will be of the Gold version of the game.

Thanks,

David

Is there a scenario list / unit count available for these?

While the monster sizes look cool I find myself preferring smaller-midsize engagements.

There's plenty of mid to small-sized scenarios.  I'm playing one now PBEM and it's 36 turns long with about 100-125 units per side.  Very manageable.

Hi All,

Time for just one more in 2017...

We're very happy to get Kharkov '42 Gold out the door before the corks pop on the New Year!

Lots of interesting things in this new release including a fabulous new Campaign by César 'Indragnir' Librán Moreno. Using a lot of new information from Glantz as well as a lot of our own resources direct from the Soviet archives, César has built a campaign quite different (and we believe more accurate) than the stock versions included. César has included extensive notes on what is new and what has changed.

I think Korsun '44 is the last East Front title to go Gold yet but yes, I'm looking forward to the West Front titles getting the upgrade.

Are the Modern Campaign titles going to get the Gold treatment?

Thank you - I've corrected the link in the original post. I cut and pasted from another post and didn't realise that 'shortened' the original.

Another lesson learned!

And yes, France '40 Gold will be particularly impressive. A lot of additional research and a pile of new scenarios will be included...

What is the general consensus of the Panzer Campaigns series? Are they worth having in the collection? I'm eyeing France '40 and some of the Eastern Front titles. My concern is that the scenarios are just too large with too many units under the player's control, and the flow of play gets bogged down and mundane from just having to jockey too many units. Some of the screenshots of the strategic maps are covered with red and blue units. It looks overwhelming.

Any specific recommendations as far as which titles in the series are best?

I think the games are well worth having.  They're incredibly well researched, though not detailed to the extent of something like War in the East.  They strike a nice middle-ground between something lighter like Strategic Command and the Grigsby games.

I'd say your concerns are spot-on for the Eastern Front games, at the very least.  I own most of the XYZ Campaigns titles, and I don't think I've ever even finished an Eastern Front scenario due to the overwhelming size and scale.

That being said, each game does have a number of bite-sized scenarios that are lightning fast to get through.  Honestly, I tend to tap out while the AI plays its turn since it can be rather time-consuming on larger scenarios, so I just do something else and check back on my turn and look over the status of my units.

As for which titles are the best, I think it's largely subjective based on theater and scale preference.  My personal favorites have always been the Mediterranean/North Africa titles (Tunisia '43 and Salerno '43 come to mind) because I find they strike my sweet spot of unit scale vs ground covered.

Even France '40, Normandy '44, and Bulge '44 are a bit overwhelming for me.

Also, I've found Japan '45/'46 to be surprisingly compelling and with manageable smaller scenarios.  I haven't touched any of the larger operations maps, but I really love playing out the beach landings for individual Army/Marines units.

^Thanks for your thoughts and comments.

For some reason the Italian Theater interests me the least...it always has. I have no idea why. Also, North Africa is cool, but playing as the Brits isn't generally my first choice, so needless to say, those titles wouldn't be my first choice as a result.

The early blitz battles on the western front and the eastern front through '43 always interested me the most...I just know that I won't get a lot of play out of the titles though since the OOBs are just so immense.

I've also been looking at the Strategic War series, especially the First Blitzkrieg. It covers some of the battles that interest me the most in the early war years. I wonder why these titles were not brought up to gold standard?

^ I know what you mean, Italy and North Africa are usually never my first (or second or third) choice for WWII gaming either, but for some reason I ended up spending the most time with those games.   :o

You could also try the Panzer Battles series - they're sort of a middle ground between the tactical and operational games.  I think there's only 2 titles (Normandy and N. Africa), but I recall them being on the more manageable side.  Never tried the Strategic War series.

JH, just depends on the max unit count your willing to play with. My rule of thumb is to say about half the scenarios listed on the game page will be larger size scenarios. it's a general rule that works for me, some games will have a little more, some less. If your going East i'd be more concerned with getting a game with a lot of scenarios starting with static fronts, they can get to be a slog. The two east front games i have, i enjoy, Kharkov 42 and Moscow 42. Kharkov actually has quite a few manageable scenarios, and Moscow 42 has a mass amount of content with some interesting scenarios i just had to have. I recently bought quite a few Tiller games when i got a gift card for the holidays, 20% off when you buy 5 titles. I've just started playing Gettysburg, single and pbem, and having a lot of fun with that title.

...berto, I have Kursk - Southern Front. It's part of the Panzer Battles series.

hahaha..........that very decisive, don't forget the Civil War games, the new hand painted maps are awesome. Smolensk 41 & France 40 are next on my list. I also have the strategic games, there's a map mod for TFB, and i thought i heard they were updating those also, eventually.

You got the new updated Gettysburg? The hand painted maps are a totally separate download, to big to include with setup file. Look on the update page for the maps download.

FYI, there can be a big difference between the so called "alt" version of scenarios and stock scenarios.

The alt scenarios use unit stats compiled by Volcano Man (Ed Williams) based on the McNamara system and additional historical research. Stock unit values tend to have less of a gap between German capabilities and the capabilities of everybody else. The difference between, say, a Panzergrenadier Division and a Soviet Rifle Division is far more pronounced with McNamara-based stats.

For older titles, everything released before 2010 or so, the difference is greater than for newer titles. In some cases, alt scenarios only include different unit placement, objectives and graphics if the stock scenarios of the game already use McNamara-based values.

When you're playing Panzer Battles, you're essentially playing with McNamara-based stats at all times.

Personally, I prefer to play alt/McNamara versions and/or the updated versions of scenarios when they're available.

The series desperately needs the "Gold" treatment. Wonder why Volcano Man never put anything together?

Hi Jarhead0331,

Yes its been talked about and we have done some test builds etc. It just needs time, something that has been lacking between new titles and upgrading other series to Gold.

Just to whet your appetite here are a few test screen shots. All were taken on a (very) widescreen monitor, but you will get the general idea. They are taken at different zoom levels as well. These are test graphics and are expected to change before release.

It's in the queue, but it's one of the many titles that are waiting to be updated. We're trying to balance work on new titles while doing these updates.

To complicate matters further, with the improving 'look' of the upgraded titles, were getting more requests from modders for various items as they build out additional content. (That's a good problem!).

So it's all a balancing act. Let me go back and see what needs to be done to get the Strategic War series updated....
