I put about a dozen hours into it and it kicked my ass each time.

Just keep an eye on happiness, so long as the burghers of your town are happy you will get income. Look at their demands and expand based on that, before going on a building spree. If you really stuck also take a look at the Youtube 'Let's play' videos.
