QuoteThe sheriff's office in Jacksonville, Florida, said there was a mass shooting at a downtown marketplace on Sunday and urged people to stay far away from the area.

"Mass shooting at the Jacksonville Landing. Stay far away from the area. The area is not safe at this time. STAY AWAY #TheLandingMassShooting," the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said on Twitter.

The shooting occurred during the Madden 19 Tournament at the GLHF Game Bar, according to the Twitter of CompLexity Gaming, one of the event organizers. One Madden participant, Young Drini, was grazed in the hand and is away from the scene and safe, Complexity said.

On an online stream of the Madden event posted to the website Twitch, several loud gunshots can be heard and the game abruptly stops.

Federal law enforcement officials are monitoring situation in Jacksonville. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is responding to the scene in Jacksonville Landing, a law enforcement source told CNN.

As a word of caution to anybody who may be so inclined, no political discussion whatsoever.

Police say one suspect is dead.  They don't know if there is a second suspect.

When is this insanity going to end?

Current preliminary is 4 dead, 11 injured. One apparent shooter dead, unsure if this is one of the 4 in the tally. Situation still very fluid, police are securing the area.

Hearing through social media that the shooter was one of the tournament participants that had just been eliminated.

Don't see any official confirmation of that though, so take it for what it's worth.

^According to the Los Angeles Times, a gamer opened fire after losing, then killed himself. The report, which quoted messages from another gamer, could not immediately be confirmed.

Local media report that at least four people have been killed, and at least 11 others are injured.

Police have not confirmed the exact numbers.

Disgruntled over EA's incessant DLC and loot boxing I suspect.

Being used against him? Being broke because he loaded up and still lost? Both?

Gallows humor aside, I suppose we all have known people who lose so hard they destroy their own computers in emotional rages. There isn't much of a step down from that, when people have been taught to regard other people as worthless. And in the case of the boy I knew (who certainly hadn't been taught that), he had been pushed into a lot of stress for years, and now had divorcing parents (I didn't know about yet), without having learned emotional maturity. People's psyches just snap. It's horrible.

And in this case maybe the equivalent of someone shooting up a saloon after a bad run of poker. Honestly, now that I think of the parallel, I'm a little surprised that doesn't happen a lot more often.  :-\

This stuff happens a fair bit in Korea.  Some people take games seriously, life and death seriously.

Especially since it's apparently easy to sneak an entire arsenal into a casino.  :-"

Hmpf, yeah I wonder where things are with that case? We're coming up on a year, 10 months now. I know the LV police have been releasing new body-cam videos last month.

As a word of caution to anybody who may be so inclined, no political discussion whatsoever.

This is a peculiar experiment that we've embarked upon. I seriously wonder what would count as political discussion in this case? If the shooter had been Muslim, or black nationalist would mentioning the fact have counted as political? What if he'd been white supremacist?

I think I understand why RPF was closed. I'm guessing that it was threatening to tear the site apart. I'm just not sure how politics can be kept out of current events. I hope this works.

I thought it was probably because web hosting threatened to pull the plug in order to stifle free speech?  :-"

An interesting implication is that the shooter drove from Baltimore, Maryland, to Jacksonville, FL, carrying the weapon; which suggests he always intended to use it.

The Baltimore Sun noted that court records involving the divorce of the shooter's parents, show he had "significant medical problems and healthcare needs".

May not have planned it JP. I know people that carry when traveling,  especially if driving.

I think we all know "politics" when we see it. At the very least, its obvious when a comment is "politically" charged to the extent that it risks offense, or strong disagreement. The mod team is watching and will be sure to take the appropriate action when necessary.

I am not going to publicly get into our rationale for closing RPFW at this time, but suffice it to say, it certainly wasn't helping the site or bringing our members together in a positive way.

Granted, but it may also depend on the weapon.

Okay, I've seen now that it was a handgun. So yep, that could just be considered normal self-protection. I gather he didn't bring it into the gun-free zone venue first -- he went out and came back (into the zone) shooting.

Attempts to find prior motive have not turned up anything specific that I've heard yet, but have turned up something of his politics (which I won't mention here, just to be safe).

I would agree if this guy was a FL native as I knew a TON of people who carried when I lived there.

That said carrying a firearm across multiple state lines? I know in Jersey even with an out of state permit driving while carrying will get you arrested. I would have to say this guy probably had intent.

In the South Eastern part of the USA, if you have a concealed carry permit for a handgun most of the other states have reciprocity.  And aside from that, in most of the SE of the USA you can carry whatever in your car.

The NRA website has details on gun laws by State.  I do know that when taking shotguns in my trunk across four different SE states I did not have any concerns and none of these States had an issue.
