Title: Are You a Game Collector?
Post by: Pete Dero on February 18, 2020, 10:24:19 AM
https://www.fanatical.com/en/blog/games-collector

We surveyed over 6,000 people to understand the growing trend of 'Games Collecting'

To find out just how many games you need to own in order to be able to call yourself a 'Games Collector', you may be closer to this exclusive group than you think!

71% of the people we asked consider themselves to be collectors, each owning on average a whopping 931 games!  Considering that the average amount of games owned per person works out to 770 each, most gamers are only 161 games shy of earning the 'Game Collector' status.

Men are closer to earning the title than women, with men on average owning 179 more. However, that's not to say that women aren't serious about their gaming either, 70 of them told us they own over 1,000 games with a few having up to 7,000 in their collection! In fact, 23% of our overall audience claims to have more than 1,000 games, with some boasting an incredible 20,000 Steam & Console games to choose from, which takes a portion of gamers past Collector status to Elite.

If you talk about all video games and board games then I'm 99% certain I am a "collector"

It's been my one consistent vice most of my life.

Hi. My name is Jarhead and I'm a game collector.

I think the game collector status is more about the percentage of games that you own that you actually play.  I consider myself a collector.   Over the last few years I think I have played less than half the games I have bought.  Owning a 1000 games says something different to me.  Either too much money or too little self control.

Either too much money or too little self control.

Neither applies to me, so there goes that theory.  :P

If this is strictly pc games then I am not a collector.

I choose to measure my addiction level not by how many games I own but by how often I ignore life's daily needs to play them. Eating, drinking, sleep, and significant parts of the house falling in are minor interferences with gaming for me. Major would be the house on fire, earthquakes or tsunami warnings, and being held at gunpoint. In those cases I'll finish a game segment, save, then quit playing.

I can vaguely remember my childhood, learning to ride a bike, drive, and getting married but finishing the first Might & Magic, my first Total War moment, and seeing my brave pixeltruppen getting mowed-down in Combat Mission Beyond Overlord are seared into my brain synapses.

I MAY have a problem but since I can't think of any reason to do anything else, I choose to ignore it.  ::)

My word for it is "collector". I am not sure others in my family would agree.

My take-away... I am behind.

Going to need a bigger house with more closet space.

This is a solid point. On more than a few occasions my girlfriend has made the same observation about my hobby.

I could see a future documentary series on TLC called Game Collection: Buried Alive.

Pretty much sums up my thoughts as well with regards to our hobby.  Well stated Sir!

I'll admit I can be a bit of a game collector.

But I have been slowing down.  I have been more resolving to play more buy less. There are exceptions of course.

But I'm more about not getting the game just to have it. I'm going to get it to play it. Simple as that.

I read the graphics carefully.  The survey seems to apply only to electronic games leaving out pencil & paper, pdfs, and tabletop games.

In terms of just electronic games - I "probably" own less than 500 including all of the gog games, expansions, Steam, and whatnot.
Unless you count all of the pinball games I have on my virtual pinball machine and that alone is 300 or so.  But those were freeware once I purchased the expensive hardware.

But if you include RPGs (including individual pdfs for modules) my number would skyrocket. I own hundreds of pdf modules for D&D, DCC, MCC, Call of Cthulhu, etc.....

If you include tabletop games, add another 50.

If you start counting books - well the skies the limit since I went to electronic books.

Yes, sounds like they are talking about digital only.

I guess I am old fashioned...  It seems "empty" to say you are collecting something "digital."

Persistence is so dependent on specific technologies. Not likely you will pass your "collection" onto the kids when you 'shuffle off this mortal coil.'

Having been around desktop technologies since the beginning, I really don't ever go back to lapsed technologies.

Some old game I still have in the garage, that can only be played on a C64 is just junk...no matter how much fun I had playing it 30+ years ago.

I guess hardware based games like old Atari cartridges might be an exception. You still can't play'em without the tech, but at least you can put'em on a shelf.

Now, a boardgame...well that is real, playable, until the cardboard disintegrates.

My Steam library says I have 43 games.  Many of them were GH Donations or gifts.  I haven't played all of them, just most.  And the ones I set my mind to I have 1000+ hours on.

No, I buy games I want to play, not to collect them. I have a lot of games, but that is a side effect.

Between Steam, GOG, GamersGate, Matrix/Slitherine, and a handful of older titles not tied to any DD platform, I have around 200 games -- a paltry number compared to most folks I know.

As always, however, my problem is that I've played maybe only half of them, at least to any significant degree.  (Firing up a game and playing the tutorial doesn't count.)  Even with having reduced the number of games I purchase in a year, I still end up buying them faster than I can get to them.  (I sincerely admire Jarhead for managing to spend time with at least most of the stuff he picks up.)  :-\

I went through my Steam Library.  I have 61 games.  Of those, 19 have been played less than 10 hours.  There are a couple that I played for half an hour and did not care for (Distant Worlds; Scythe) but the rest I've just not gotten around to yet but plan on playing.

Over 200 games in my Steam library with over 2000 hours in the Total War and Men of War series easily. But the vast majority of games haven't been played or played for just a few hours. Probably have around 35 PC games, physical copies that is which includes the release day purchase of Everquest 2 which was something like a 10 disk install and a mint copy of Medieval Total War from CompUSA.
Also have a mint copy of Socom Navy Seals for the PS2 including that big box and the headphones. Had a bunch of console games I sold/traded in that I wish I still had.

I have a disc copy of the original X-Com, probably the oldest disc based game I have.

Might still have the floppies to Master of Orion, but obviously those are worthless now.

I did have my C-64 floppies saved until Mom threw them out along with my GI Joes and Lego about 30 years ago :/

I do still have more modern disc based games like Shogun TW in my own basement still.

There are some sites (fewer now a days) that deal in old/new game selling/trading.  I've been a member/user of a site called GameTZ (https://gametz.com/user/langev.html) for going on 20 years (on Mar 21).  Unfortunately, there aren't many on that site interested in wargames...some, but not many.  Lately, I've mostly used it to grab cheap Steam keys (e.g. BattleTech and DLC for $2!).  There are still people that want the CDs, floppies, etc, but more and more trading/selling is digital.

...and yes, I seem to be more a collector that a player.  Got 225+ just in my Steam library.  The eye candy always gets me.  At least I have slowed down major buying the last few years.

If you have a game that is no longer available (physical or digital) you can get a nice price :

https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000HAUO4A/ref=dp_olp_all_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=all

e.g. The Battle for Middle Earth II: Rise of the Witch King Expansion Pack starting at $74.99.

BFMA 1 and 2 are pretty expensive. They really need a remaster or a Definitive Edition, they were good RTS games.
