Title: The 2015 Running Football Thread (College & Pro)
Post by: bayonetbrant on February 03, 2015, 07:40:46 AM
Super Bowl is over, next up, National Signing Day, then the draft.

All the cool kids are talking about next year's football season already.  Don't be an ironic hipster and try to avoid it.

according to RJ Bell of Pregame.com (https://twitter.com/RJinVegas/status/562094322066001920), the 2016 Super Bowl champ odds are

Quote2016 Super Bowl Odds: Sea 6/1; NE 7/1; GB 8/1; Den, Ind 12/1; Dal 18/1; Phi 25/1; SF, Pit, NO, Det, Bal 30/1; Cin 35/1

In other news the Jags, Bucs, Jets, Titans, Redskins, and Raiders are already mathematically eliminated from the playoffs.

I was waiting to see if Manziel stayed in rehab or not.  If he stays there 'til this time next year, they might have a chance.

Sports talk radio out of Philly....She-gles fans are jumping off of rooftops and are ready to toss Chip "The Savior" Kelly off the nearest bridge. The moaning and tears of frustrated/angry Philly fans is deafening.

As a Cowboys fan stuck in enemy territory for five more months.....it's sweet music!!!

I'm far from convinced the Cowboys will pick up AP. Jones sometimes talks big and then does the unexpected...for good or bad. Case in point, keeping Garrett when everyone and their mother thought he would finally get fired. It won't shock me to see Murray back next year or a cheaper option in the backfield than either Murray or AP.

I've actually read in a few places that Jerry's kid has convinced him to back off a bit on his personnel department. Apparently, Stephen Jones has long been trying to convince dad to let his scouts do their jobs and stop playing at being a GM, and since he was brought in to the organization as an executive he's finally been successful.

It would explain a couple of very good drafts and a lack of insane roster moves...

As for Peterson, nobody is giving up a mint for that guy. You're talking about a near 30 year old tailback with a lot of wear on his legs who hasn't suited up for basically a year, and he's a nearly 12 million dollar hit against the cap. And I honestly don't think the Vikings need a mint for him. They've got some young talent, they'd open up a big piece of cap room...add another good draft to the mix, and they're not looking bad. Hell, they won 7 last year with a still-developing roster.

Hey Steelie, whadda ya' think about DeMarco as an Iggle?  >:D

Pretty much made my head explode......

I effin hate the She-gles, almost entirely because of their fan base. Some of the absolute crap I've heard on talk radio while exiled on the east coast this year has only justified that hatred. Worse,  I love Sam Bradford. He's a great kid, he's a Sooner and he's a class human being. DeMarco is a Sooner and a Cowboy and again, a good guy. So the best I can do is hope Sam and DeMarco stay healthy, take the She-gles for a boatload of money while proving to be huge disappointments as Philly once again misses the playoffs.

I'm going to try to call into one particular sports talk program in the morning. This clown, a fixture on Philly sports radio, said before the first Cowboys game he hoped DeMarco Murray got injured so badly the game before that he wouldn't be on the field against Philly. Totally what I've come to expect from Philly fans! If I can get in, I'm going to challenge him to play that clip the first time he has DeMarco on the program. Of course, he won't. The Philly mascot should be a chicken instead of an eagle, a chicken coated in a particular, smelly shade of brown......

Now ask me how I really feel  8)

Growing up, my first loyalty was always to the Oilers, before they moved anyway. Being a homer, I've become a whole-hearted Texans fan with no difficulty. After Houston and Dallas, my NFL fandom varies as I tend to follow players I like more than teams.

I dunno...about six years ago a fella went into a bar in Norman, Oklahoma (home of the Sooners to the uninitiated) wearing a Texas ballcap. A few drinks and a couple of comments later, he was being rushed to the local ER san's his family jewels. Actually, they were still there....kinda...but they were no longer recognizable, having been squeezed until they scrambled by an upset, drunk Sooner fan. All things considered....I'd take the tazer to the groin.

And it seems the Big12 is still clueless.

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/12828961/big-12-commissioner-bob-bowlsby-says-conference-putting-title-game-talk-hold-now

Quote
PHOENIX -- The Big 12 is not moving forward with plans to add a conference title game, commissioner Bob Bowlsby said Tuesday during the conference's spring meetings.

Despite telling reporters last week that he sensed the league "will probably move in that direction," Bowlsby said Big 12 athletic directors believe there isn't enough evidence after one year of the College Football Playoff to justify such a significant move.

"I really have been proud of our athletic directors because they chose to respond to not being in the playoff rather than react," Bowlsby said. "I think they've been very thoughtful about it and continue to be thoughtful about it. We all believe that one year is not a long enough window or trial to draw any conclusions.

"We may find ourselves in better shape than some other conferences as a result of our model, not in spite of our model."

The Big 12 will continue to push for NCAA deregulation that would permit the conference to stage a title game, but that's not a path the conference is ready to go down after Baylor and TCU were left out of the inaugural playoff.

"I just think it's a process," he said. "That isn't to say we won't ever consider those things again or that we won't talk more tomorrow, but I just am not sensing that that's where we're heading."

There is no interest, he added, in expanding the Big 12 in order to fix their postseason problem.

The Big 12 is the only Power 5 conference not to play a title game. TCU and Baylor tied for the title last year but were left out of the CFP.

One issue the conference will address this week is establishing a tiebreaker, but Big 12 ADs and coaches will not finalize those plans until their Wednesday meetings.

"I'm quite comfortable in saying we'll come out with a resolution on that and a plan going forward," Bowlsby said.

Bowlsby said ADs discussed the Big 12's scheduling model -- a nine-game round-robin format -- and were unanimous that they do not want to change to an eight-game conference schedule.

"We felt that we ought to keep it the way it is," Bowlsby said, "and have it be about who we play and not who we don't play."

WTF!  Auburn is predicted to win the SEC but not their division.  Don't you have to win your division to play in the SEC championship game. So if you don't play in the SEC championship game, how do you win the conference.

Here's the scoop: the media members were asked to vote the order of finish for the SEC East and West.  Alabama received more consistent 1st and 2nd place votes than Auburn (who received more 3rd and 4th place votes to go with their 1st and 2nd place votes) so, Alabama was the winner of the vote for the West.  However, when the vote was tallied as to who would win the SEC, Auburn pulled enough votes to be voted the winner.  Got it?

Yep, I understand MD.  Still kind of funny for a non SEC person.  And yes, I know it's not the SEC deciding this but the press.

The really great news is that we're about 1.5 months for kickoff for college.  In fact, our high school team kickoff their first game August 28th.

I think there is a lot of football to be played before the championship game.  I don't think you can write off any team that makes the final 4.

I cannot speak to anyone else, but OSU has to win their division before they can think repeat.  That means beating Penn State, Michigan State and Michigan.  MSU and Michigan they play the last two games of the year.  Neither will be an easy one.  Penn State always gives the Buckeyes a hard time.  They went to overtime last year.

James Franklin is an excellent recruiter.  If he stays, Penn St. is going to be a powerhouse again.  Same with Jim Harbaugh and Michigan.

The couple of Penn State fans I know don't like Franklin very much.  They don't think he'll be very successful.  But I agree with you on him.

If Harbaugh has the success at Michigan that he had at Stanford, then that will be a good thing.  Hopefully Nebraska and Wisconsin can also get things turned around and Minnesota can continue to improve.

Right now, the Big 10 is like the SEC.  The best teams are all in one division.  It'll be interesting to see how that plays out over the next few years.

You can tell your Penn St. friends to just look at what Franklin did at Vanderbilt.  The records he achieved each year may not be impressive by big boy football standards, but, it's VANDERBILT!  The Stanford of the East!  If Franklin decides he wants PSU to be a powerhouse, Penn State will be a powerhouse.

I agree MD.

So, is the Iron Bowl going to decide the SEC this year, or are there other teams that will be crowned the SEC champs.

How about the ACC and PAC12.  Who are the teams to beat this coming year.
Title: Re: The 2015 Running Football Thread (College & Pro)

Florida State, by default, should win the ACC.  Don't know if Clemson can step up.  Be nice if they could.  I despise all the Florida teams.  FSU the least, though.  Pac 12?  No idea.  Oregon?  USC?  Arizona?  Don't hear enough Pac 12 chatter to make an intelligent guess.

As for the SEC, in the East, Georgia seems to be the pick by people in the know.  I have a hard time ceding the division to them when Mark Richt loses at least one game he shouldn't and Gary Pinkel just coaches the hell out of his talent and has won the last two East titles.  The West?  I've heard arguments for Auburn, Alabama, and Texas A&M.  Arkansas is considered a shoe in to be much better than last year.  No matter who takes the division, it'll be a dog fight.  I think Auburn will.  Alabama has a tough schedule and the D they play may not be able to stop the spread consistently.  And Auburn has a QB/WR duo that should light things up for Malzahn.  Will Muschamp just needs to coach his guys not to give up more than they score and they should be good.
Title: Re: The 2015 Running Football Thread (College & Pro)
Post by: bayonetbrant on July 18, 2015, 04:49:53 PM
FSU lost a lot more than Clemson did, and the police distractions might really screw up their season.

Don't sleep on Georgia Tech.  They've got a very favorable schedule and could easily go 12-1 with wins over UGa and ND, and they'll likely have a rematch vs FSU or Clemson in the title game, since they get both in the regular season, too.

It'll be interesting to see if a 12-1 ACC champ GT team makes it into the playoff, if they get that far.

I don't see why they shouldn't.  Especially if the one loss is close, to a FSU, or Clemson or ND.  I wish the Power 5 would just do the right thing and go to 4 sixteen team conferences.  That way, we'd have a playoff system built in.  Each of the 4 play a championship game and the winners play each other to determine who plays in the championship.

Being an SEC fan is like being a Yankee fan.  Every one hates you because you win.  And it doesn't matter what they say, it's all basically sour grapes.  Because, if you gave THEIR programs the opportunity to be as good as the winners, they'd JUMP at the chance!  So, hate on the SEC all you want.  You know you want to be them :)

Just so there is no misunderstanding, I do NOT think that a preseason poll means much.  Yes, it's a talking point.  And it serves as a picture of what people around the nation think of the teams for the upcoming season.  Beyond that, there is nothing you can glean from it that means anything.  Having said that, it also serves as a point for discussion and debate for fans on what is expected of their teams and conferences, at least in the beginning.

Which brings me to the SEC.  There are 8 teams in the preseason poll.  The next closest is the Pac 12 with 6.  The ACC has 4.  The SEC had every one of their 14 teams, with the exception of Vanderbilt, get at least 1 point in the poll.  Can your conference say that?  I don't think so.  And as the year goes on, the SEC will eat its own.  And while 8 seems a large number to maintain, I suspect that the end of season poll will contain just as many SEC teams as right now, give or take 1 or 2.  Will your conference be able to say the same?

They need to bring back the old SWAC conference.  That's what I think.  I also think that pre-season polls suck and that DIV I college football to reduce the number of regular season games and institute a real playoff like every other NCAA football division and sport.

4 teams is not a playoff.   I'm saying that if the NCAA feels the Mid Athletic Conference is worthy of being in DIV I, then it's champion should be allowed to play for the NCAA championship and the only way that happens is with a real playoff.  Every conference champion is slotted in the playoff and let it be decided on the field.  Otherwise drop the unworthy and pick the four worthy conferences.
Title: Re: The 2015 Running Football Thread (College & Pro)

I think, eventually, college football will move to four 16 team leagues with two divisions each.  The division winners will play the conference championship game and those winners will play in the 4 team National Championship playoff.  What they do with the remaining 50 odd Div I teams is inconsequential.

Big 10 has 3, which is probably about right.  Big questions marks around Nebraska, Penn State and Michigan.  Heck, I'm a little surprised to see Wisconsin ranked so high with a new coach.

But, as you say MD, doesn't matter who is placed in the polls for preseason, only matters who is ranked #1 at the end of the season.

Ohio State is the unanimous #1 in the AP poll.  This is the first team to receive a unanimous preseason #1 ranking.  Why doesn't SI just put them on the cover at the start of the season and a big ol' wet kiss from Don Corleone to make sure the Buckeyes crash and burn in spectacular fashion this season!

Preseason rankings date back to 1950. Since then, no team had received more than 97 percent of the first-place votes in a preseason poll.

In 2013, Alabama, which had won two straight championships, received 58 of 60 first-place votes, and defending champion Florida did the same in 2009. Neither finished the season No. 1.

Tthe dude is correct as of today.  But will all 8 of those guys be ranked by the time they get to the end of the season?  Ditto Ohio St's unranked sked - how many of them will get ranked later if they keep winning?

Talking about "who's making the playoff" before week 7 is just silly, but we gotta fill airtime :)

Why would MSU fall out of the rankings with a lose to Oregon.  Depends how badly and how they play.  And yes, they'll fall, but not our of the rankings.

True.  Just pokin' the bear a bit ;)  Us SEC fans are touchy when you call in to question the veracity of how tough the West is. :)  As honest as I can be, it's going to be the all about the A's this year: Auburn, Alabama, Arkansas and A&M.  And the Hogs and the Aggies may just play, 'The Team you don't want to face,' week in and week out.  If Georgia keeps their stuff together, they should only have to fight off Mizzou.  Maybe Tennessee or Florida if they get outstanding QB play.

I did watch the OSU game Monday.  Seemed much closer before Tech's QB, Brewer, went out.  Having said that, Braxton Miller looks like he won't miss a beat and Urb has an overabundance of talent at all the skill positions.  I had to laugh at PSU losing to Temple.  That makes me  smile, although, I like James Franklin and hope he does something good in Happy Valley.  They could use it.  Michigan losing to Utah makes me laugh.  I liked Harbaugh in the NFL, I think that's where he belongs, but I HATE Michigan.  So, a loss AND Harbaugh has to eat it.  Double whammy!!

I'm more anti Bielema stance than anything else.  I think he would make a better Hogs mascot than coach.

I was very disappointed with PSU.  B10 needs them to step it up.  Harbaugh needs to find a QB.  Hopefully in the next couple of years he'll have them respectable again.  Also need Wisconsin and Nebraska to get their act's together.

Arkansas got beat.
Auburn looked horrible and almost lost.
Tennessee blew a big lead at home to Oklahoma.

I watched the second half of the Tennessee game.  How they scored 17 up to that point was a mystery to me.  They looked terrible.  They couldn't tackle if the game depended on it.  What's that you say?  It DID?!  Well, that explains it.

Watched some of the Auburn game.  Come to think of it, that was second half action, too.  Both teams looked even.  Although, JSU could only really move the ball vertically on slants, I'd do that all do long if I knew it would work every time.  Despite the Auburn transfers on the JSU D-line, these teams should not have been close.

And Arkansas -smh-.  Is there any way we can send you back to the SouthWestern Conference?  ;)

I will say this.  The teams that won/lost close games yesterday are more likely to get something good out of it in the long run than those that blow their opponents out.  Winning 70-7 doesn't do a lot of good for the winning team, except to get some third strings playing time, but the quality of that playing time is in doubt.

Lovie Smith has his usual confused look on his face, like he's an Alzheimer's patient who doesn't know where he is. Jameis Winston looks like an entitled chump who didn't exactly put in the work and figured he'd just go out and win...and I love it.

Peyton Manning looks old. Really, really old.

Detroit pulled a typical Detroit and found a way to Detroit themselves out of a win.

I also enjoyed watching the Colts lose. Ryan Grigson is the worst GM in the NFL, but he's been protected by having Andrew Luck under center.

The Saints are a mess. I have no idea what kind of team they're trying to be, and I don't think they know either.

Man I watch one game today and it was a good game, but holy crap did the Giants have piss poor time management in the last 3 minutes of the game.  Eli continually snapped the ball with 10-15 seconds on the play clock and then that horrible call on the 1 yard line to pass.  They could have had them down to around 45 seconds after the FG and the kick off.  Crazy.

Let this be known as the week it happened again: Number 50 for Seattle tapped a Megatron fumble out of the end zone, causing a touchback and Seahawks ball.  Seattle got a first down and ran the clock out.  Game over.  Seattle wins.  As that crazy old man on College Gameday says, "Not so fast, my friend!"

You see, by aiding the ball out of the back of the end zone, Seattle committed a penalty.  The result should have been: the ball reverts to the team who last possessed it, at the spot of the last possession, and 10 Yards added to the spot of last possession.  So, First and 10 at the Seattle 6 inch line.

Now, there's no guarantee Detroit wouldn't have pissed away their opportunity.  6 inches is STILL not in the end zone, but, all the Lions needed was 3 to tie.  The touchdown likely would have sealed the win for Detroit.  Instant replay comes back to bite the NFL in the ass.  I hope it blows up in Goodell's face.  Bring on the Yanks and the Astros!!!

Man, Romo's out, Bryant's out. Cowboy's down and out.

Brady just had to slam that football after the touchdown (his way of saying - look it's inflated and we still won!).

Pissing off Brady and the Patriots has generally been a bad idea. Putting a chip on the shoulder of a team of that calibar pretty much negates the typical championship drop-off the next season. And frankly, I hope the Pats cream the crybaby Colts. I mean, if you want to discuss the "integrity of the game", how about the Colts and their "Suck for Luck" campaign to get the first pick in the draft? Add the owner's very public issues into the mix and the infamous flight from Baltimore in the middle of the night and you have a team that's hard to love.

Luck's on my fantasy football team and frankly, I'm thinking of benching him this week because I think the Pats are gonna try to kill him every play. I expect to see some hitting on that field come game time. Hell, it may start as they exit the bus.

yep.  Kicker ruins it again.  The snap wasn't his fault.  Not falling on the ball was.

The only reason we saw it was we were waiting for the start of the LSU game, which they're (so far) kicking butt in.  Would be nice if Dumblenuts hadn't tried to field a bouncing punt on his own 12, let it clang of his helmet, and gifted UF a 1st-and-goal on the 7 about 3 minutes into the game.  LSU's d-line is starting to take over though.  UF can't block 3 with 5, and it's only getting uglier.

no sooner than I type all that, UF has figured out how to throw 3-yard slants and is just chewing up the field with YACs.

This is getting entertainingly competitive.  Imagine how many nat'l titles LSU would've had since 2005 if they'd had a halfway-competent collection of QBs.  Eesh.

One of my daughters in law is an OSU grad and this occured maybe 40 minutes from my house. As you might guess, it's all over the news here. The tox results are going to tell the story. And if they come back positive, I don't want to hear the typical defense lines about "how she can still contribute to society, this was a tragic accident, etc....". If she was under the influence when she did this, I could care less if they throw away the key.

You shouldn't be.  J'ville State should have beaten Auburn.  They have the opportunity to lose the remaining games on their schedule.  Jeremy Johnson and D'Haquille Williams torpedoed your season early.

My amazement at Auburn is that they did not play better with the team they fielded.  The defense has been horrid.  Auburn would have won the Arkansas game if the receivers did not drop so many passes (including TD passes).  But that would have just been outscoring a team while having an inept defense.

UNC gave up an average of 44 points per game last season.  So far this season the average is less than 17 points per game.  But the harder part of their schedule is coming up starting Thursday.

College football teams that (presumably) control their own destiny.  Basically, if these guys win out, they're in the playoffs as conference champs

Ole Miss / LSU  (will play)
Iowa and the Ohio State / Mich St winner
Stanford
Clemson
Baylor / TCU (have to play yet)
---- but here's the mile-wide caveat: both those guys still have to play both Oklahoma and OK St.  People keep forgetting about OK St, but they're unbeaten and if they win out will have wins over all 3 and are gonna get in.

The wild card is Duke.  If they win out, they are in the ACC title game.  Win that and they'll have beaten (likely) either Clemson or FSU.  Would you keep out a 1-loss power 5 champ with a win over one of those guys in a title game?  If it was VT or Pitt or even UNC, no one would bat an eye.  But it's Duke.

The other wild card is OU.  If OU wins out, they've got an ugly loss to Texas (not unlike Ohio St last year w/ VT) but they'll have 3 late season wins over TCU, Baylor, and OK St, none of whom are likely to finish w/ fewer than 10 wins.  Now, OU doesn't control their conference destiny, but would the committee keep them out with that resume?  Unknown.  That's why they don't really control their own fate.

At this point, Alabama needs Ole Miss to lose a conference games, and they need to beat LSU.  They do not control their own destiny.

Minnesota's head coach, Jerry Kill, has been forced to retire immediately for health reasons.

The list of head coaching jobs in college is getting long this year.  USC, South Carolina, Miami, UCF, Minnesota, Illinois, Maryland, North Texas.

Looking for Rutgers and Purdue to be added to the list.  I wouldn't be surprised if Toledo, Memphis and Temple may be looking as some of the teams above may raid them.

8 laterals on the last play and Miami beats Dook!
The announcers were prattling that this was a "signature win" for Dook before the last play!  Sure it is - playing a team at home that lost 50 - 0 the previous week and scoring with 6 seconds left sounds like a "signature win" to me.

Clemson did not seem to have a defense against NCSU.  But State had even less of a defense.
But both looked amazingly good compared to Oklahoma State - Texas Tech where more than 130 points were scored and there was 1,300 yards of combined offense.

Georgia's coach is rumored to be in great danger of losing his job after Florida hammered them and UGA has no chance of winning the East with a 3-3 conference record.

Yeah, if you watch the replays of that last play, the officials got so much wrong it's a miracle they're not suspended for the season.

They missed the runner being down.
They missed an obvious block in the back.
They called a block in the back, then picked up the flag on replay review (which you're not allowed to do).
They missed the down runner on replay.
They held up everything for almost 10 minutes of replay time after the clock hit 0:00, and then still got it wrong.

So, the 49ers are benching Kaepernick...for BLAINE GABBERT? Have they SEEN Blaine Gabbert 'play football' (or whatever he calls it)? Sure, Kaep has been awful, but you're actually talking about putting Blaine f'n Gabbert in to an actual football game on purpose! This is a man who has a bad habit of closing his eyes when he throws! If your quarterback is beyond Pop Warner and needs to be taught to KEEP HIS EYES OPEN, he probably sucks.

Oh, and the Cleveland Browns could have gotten Denver's first round pick in the next draft for Joe Thomas. They didn't trade him, because of course Cleveland doesn't know how to actually put a reasonable value on talent. You're being offered a first round pick for an offensive lineman north of 30 years old, but instead you keep him because you really need to keep Josh McCown safe in the pocket more than you need to be able to draft young prospects. They also weren't able to move the bloated contract of Paul Kruger because they apparently asked for the moon and stars in return.

The 49'ers have undertaken the largest self-destruct mission I've seen in pro sports in some time. Self-inflicted wounds, bad luck and the team everyone wanted to play for in the 80's is the team no one wants to play for today. Arrogance loses out again.

There is a reason Cleveland is Cleveland....the Mistake by the Lake....the least original nickname in pro sports....arguably the ugliest uniforms in pro sports....a record of futility in the Super Bowl era...heck, they are so pathetic I can't even work up the hate for them I feel for the Eagles   8)

Back to College Football.

Previously undefeated Toledo lost last night.

Saturday we have
UNC - Dook
LSU - Alabama
Clemson - FSU

Important questions will be answered:
Who is really best in the SEC West?
Is Clemson really that good?
Will Satan's team be vanquished two years in a row?

They also have no receivers worth a damn...and one good cornerback...and MAYBE one pass rusher...and half a defensive line. Draft picks are how you fill those holes. Keeping a veteran tackle around to help keep such talents as McCown and Manziel safe makes no sense. Also, most of those quarterbacks didn't last a year not because of injury but because THEY ARE ALL GODAWFUL. Seriously, that list of 'talent' is a cry for help. Perhaps an owner capable of finding front office talent would be a good idea. Ten bucks says that Ryan Grigson is being introduced as the new GM of the Browns a year after the Colts finally fire his idiot ass.  ;D

It really is astonishing to look at. As much as I found Harbaugh obnoxious at times, he was clearly the guy they should have kept in the power struggle with Trent Baalke. Now they're screwed. And ownership doesn't so much seem to care since they've already got their fancy new stadium.

UNC lit up Dook with 66 points.
Clemson has a better QB than Florida State and won.
Alabama's defensive line dominated LSUs offensive line for their win.
Auburn managed to beat A&M.

Except for Bama, an awesome college football Saturday.  I'm not fond of the LSU fans, but Bama's are closer.
UNC is ranked 17th in both major polls.

So the Vikes are 6-2, and currently tied with the Pack atop the NFC North.  Despite everyone's predictions that they were going to do well this year, I'm still almost too surprised to feel euphoric.

Of course, we've only just begun the tougher half of our schedule...and we just barely beat our first good opponent, at home, in overtime.  So I think I have good reason to remain skeptical for now.  (That, plus, you know, Vikings fan. :P )

Vikings beat a pretty decent Raiders team in Oakland, and are now alone atop the division.  So far so good, but must continue to suppress hope/optimism for the time being.  Talk to me after we've played our "Bird Stretch" (Falcons, Seahawks, and Cardinals -- seriously, is someone in the NFL scheduling office trying to prank us?) and next week's division showdown with the Pack; if the Vikes manage to go at least 2-2 these next four weeks, then I might finally believe they're for real.

Speaking of Green Bay:  WTF happened to the Packers??  That they've lost three in a row is remarkable enough, but at least their first two defeats were somewhat understandable (away games at Denver and Carolina).  But to lose at home to the lowly Lions??!!  :o  Oh, the ignominy...

Also:  How the hell did the Bears manage to steal a win in St. Louis, and how did the Redskins pull off such a dominating win over the Saints?  Never would've called either of those.

Final thought of the weekend:  F*** the Patriots.  (Sorry mirth.)

MD, your Tide is looking good for the end of the season.  I don't see any stumbling blocks on their way to the playoffs this year.

The PAC12 imploded this weekend, with both Stanford and Utah losing.

It was great to see Baylor get beat soundly at home.  OkSt barely made it out of Ames with a win.

The ACC champ game should be between NC and Clemson.  This should be a very good game.

Buckeyes face MSU and UM the next two weeks.  Time for them to step up if they want a chance to play for the National Championship again.

Thanks, OJsDad.  They looked like a high grade defense Saturday.  Don't know how long Minkah Fitzpatrick will be out, if at all.  That kids been really good this year.  And, as I am sure you know, it does no good to look past your hated rival.  Regardless of how good or bad they are, they ALWAYS have extra incentive to put a stop to your season.  So, once the Iron Bowl is done, if we win, I'll look to the SEC Championship showdown with Florida.

A good point I heard on the radio this morning, 'Bama is good at crushing one dimensional teams.  LSU comes to mind.  However, their bugaboo has been teams that can spread it out and have weapons at multiple positions.  It's how OSU beat the daylights out of us last year.  And speaking of the Buckeyes, they have their first serious stretch of the year, starting Saturday.  If they can get past State, they have Michigan in the Big House.  They get past THAT, and it's Iowa in the Big Ten Championship game.  Good luck to the Buckeyes!  I'd like to see 'Bama get some payback in the playoff ;)

The Packers receivers are a mess. Cobb isn't a #1, and his production has plummeted as he tries to replace Jordy Nelson in that role. And neither James Jones nor Davante Adams is really a #2. Their tight ends suck. Rodgers is rushing throws and clearly has no confidence in his line. Oh, and their running game has faded as Eddie Lacy has forgotten how to be a running back.

The Rams are a weird team. Every year, they knock off some impressive opponents and also lose to some truly awful teams. It doesn't help their consistency that Nick Foles has been so bad that he's now officially benched in favor of the immortal Case Keenum.

As for the Redskins, I don't know how to explain that beyond the now fired Rob Ryan being an awful defensive co-ordinator, and the Saints possessing no pass rush. Also, Brandon Browner is only good for taking shockingly stupid penalties, and he's their best cornerback.

Father-in-law and I were out eating a burger at a local grill and left mid-way through the 3 quarter, so I didn't even see the comeback.  :(

I usually sit through to the bitter end, but chose to go rake leaves and play in the pile with the kids instead.  Better choice, I'll admit but it would have been nice to see the comeback too.

Bahamas?

I'm thinking that muffler bowl in Detroit.  Who the hell wants to ever go to Detroit, let alone Detroit in the winter.  /shutter/

There's a good chance there will be more than one team in a bowl with less than a .500 record.  There's a saturation point that football will reach.  And if you do not think they have already crossed, and I do, then it's coming soon.

Wall St. Journal today said it is possible for 5 teams with a losing conference record or a .500 record making a bowl.

Hey Brant!

I'm guessing UNC cannot sleep-walk their way through NC State on the way to playing Clemson.

I'm also guessing that a UNC loss would make up for most of NCSU's less than stellar season.

Quick Quiz: When was the last time UNC won the ACC Football Title???

UNC had an amazing first quarter against NCSU - leading 35 - 7.  Then UNC went into sleepwalk mode.

But Clemson had a lot of problems with South Carolina having yet another game with a subpar performance.

yeah, State has played some lousy ball this year.  Doesn't help when you lose your top 2 RBs, your top 2 WRs, 2 OL starters, and 3 guys from your defensive back 7 from you game 1 roster.

C'mon, BB.  You know injury can't be used as an excuse.  It certainly effects things, but Notre Dame lost their best QB and RB and TCU lost most of their starting D and a QB.  No matter.  Basketball season is upon us and I am sure the Wolfpack will kick some major a$$!

College conference championship games today.  If Clemson and Alabama win they're in the CFP.  The winner of the Big 10 championship game will also be in.  At this point, I think Oklahoma has the fourth slot locked up.  I cannot see a scenario where someone could knock them out.  If Stanford wins tomorrow, they'll still have two loses, Ohio State didn't win either their division or conference, so I don't see how you can give them a pass.  If North Carolina should beat Clemson, they're so far back I don't see them being able to jump OU.

Should be a great day of football, unfortunately, I'll miss most of it as I'm going with my son's scout troop the AF museum at Wright-Patterson.

I wish UNC had won, but they played pretty well.  They scored enough points to beat Clemson.  But Clemson had a much better defensive/offensive lines than UNCs.

I regret the official blew the offsides call at the end of the game on the onside kick that gave UNC possession at the 50 yard line down 8 points.  But it probably would not have mattered.

Seemed to me the big difference between the teams was the ability to pressure the quarterback.  Clemson got to UNCs QB a lot more often than vice-versa.

Hopefully UNC can win whatever bowl game they go to.  A 10-2 regular season is something almost everyone else would wish to have.

Anchors Aweigh (1906 version)

Stand Navy down the field, sail set to the sky;
We'll never change our course, So Army you steer shy-y-y-y.
Roll up the score Navy, anchors aweigh!
Sail Navy down the field and sink the army, sink the army grey!

Get underway, Navy, Decks cleared for the fray;
We'll hoist true Navy Blue, So Army down your Grey-y-y-y;
Full speed ahead, Navy; Army heave to;
Furl Black and Grey and Gold, And hoist the Navy, hoist the Navy Blue!

Blue of the Mighty Deep; Gold of God's Sun
Let these colors be till all of time be done, done, done,
On seven seas we learn Navy's stern call:
Faith, Courage, Service true, with Honor, Over Honor, Over All.

Chip isn't a half bad coach...or at least, he wasn't before he clearly began gulping down his own Kool Aid and decided that his system was all, and player talent didn't mean as much. He was also undermined by Chip Kelly, horrific disaster of a general manager. Now, the Eagles are stuck with a mess of a roster filled with awful contracts and more holes than a wheel of swiss cheese.

The question now is : does he end up coaching Mariota with the Titans? If he still wants personnel control, I think he's pretty much finished in the NFL. If he's willing to back down on that (and has been humbled a bit), he could be an interesting hire for someone.

BY God, I PRAY he doesn't coach Tennessee!  I wasn't a big fan of Mariota coming out, thought he was a system quarterback.  But having watched him this year, I think he has the makings of a very good qb.  Chip coming in would kill that in my opinion.

Buckeyes have jumped up early scoring on both of their first 2 drives while keeping the Irish from scoring.  Bosa just got ejected for targeting.  We'll see if that changes the defense.  Irish have also lost a key defender to a leg injury.

Still some games to go, but except for Clemson the ACC is done.  Arkansas and Georgia have not played yet and Mississippi is leading big at half time.

And the Browns have started the firings.  The GM is gone, and the coach is meeting with the owner at 7pm EST.

And now the coach has been fired.  Let the merry-go-round for the Clowns start again.

I saw someone state that the last 5 coaching changes in the AFC North (Cincy, Cleveland, Pitts, Baltimore)  have all been at Cleveland.

And now it turns out that Manziel didn't bother showing up on Sunday because he spent the night before parading around Vegas in a wig and fake mustache. I love the Browns.

In other dunderhead news, the Colts have decided to keep their idiot coach AND their idiot GM (who the pill popping owner actually said compares as better than Bill Polian after 4 years). Both are morons, they reportedly hate one another...yeah, this should work out just fine.

Interesting comparison about how crappy Detroit has been for 30 years, even with Barry Sanders and Clavin Johnson

https://sports.yahoo.com/news/lions-on-verge-of-wasting-a-once-in-a-generation-talent-...-again-231155752.html

QuoteWhat's even more remarkable about their careers is how little they were helped by elite blocking. The Lions have had only had one offensive lineman make the Pro Bowl since 1997: Don Muhlbach, the long snapper, in 2012. In those two amazing individual seasons, when Sanders rushed for 2,053 yards and Johnson racked up 1,964 receiving yards, the Lions went a combined 13-19.

No surprise there.  Aside from the (very) occasional decent season, the Lions have been the perennial doormat in the NFC North, and the NFC Central before that.

As awful as the Lions have mostly been in the Super Bowl era, more than one Sunday was ruined for me by Sanders running wild over my Bucs.  Then again, that was at a time when they were at the end of their OWN awful phase, before Dungy and Chucky got there.

Steelers and Bengals game was intense for sure and had a lot of interesting stuff.....

Bryant's crazy circus catch in the endzone...no idea how he held on to that doing a somersault

Shazier's hit on the Bengal's player that caused a critical fumble...although one could argue that should have been a penalty for hit to the head

Burfict sacking Ben shortly after that and causing Ben to leave the game...classless fans cheer the injury and pelt him with bottles as he leaves the field

Bengal's coming back with 2 TDs and a FG to start the fourth quarter

Late in the game, Jones comes in and throws a terrible pass up the middle which was intercepted by Burfict...at that time, he was ready to be the game's hero

Next play, Hill gets a decent gain, but at end of the play fumbles the ball...just needed to hold on...call was still OK, Steelers had 3 timeouts left so they couldn't just take a knee yet

Then Big Ben comes off the bench, only able to throw very short passes....he moves them down the field, including a critical 4th and 3 conversion

Ben attempts to hit Brown to get close to FG range...pass not really close....but then the craziness starts, Burfict comes across the field and puts his shoulder into Brown's head, basically knocking him out....immediate 15 yard penalty

While everyone is checking on Brown, players and coaches jaw at each other.....including Pacman Jones who appeared to be jawing with Porter and possibly bumped the referee....another additional 15 yard penalty

Steelers end up with a chip shot FG, win the game....Bengals continue their long streak of not winning a playoff game

Although Marvin Lewis might be the nicest coach in the world, time for him to go.....he just can't win the big ones and last night demonstrated he couldn't control his own team during crucial times...

As a fan, I love to see the hype and animosity these guys have for one another.  With the time, effort and loyalty I put in to the teams I root for, I WANT to see my players hate the other team!  So, from that standpoint, it was great to see those guys want to mix it up.  Having said that, some of what went on in that game was just shameful.  TRYing to injure the other guys players is just unacceptable.

Okay, I have to admit this is both funny and kind of awesome (I just wish it wasn't against the backdrop of yeterday's game)...

Former Vikings coach Bud Grant (he's to the Vikings' fanbase what Lombardi is to the Packers' and Ditka is to the Bears') walked out onto the field prior to yesterday's game wearing only pants and a polo shirt, which is totally cool/badass (and maybe a little nuts!).  8)  In addition, however, he apparently became something of an overnight sensation.

Quote
Sunday's NFL playoff game between the Vikings and Seahawks in Minneapolis was historically frigid, the third-coldest kickoff in league history.

Bud Grant, the Vikings' 88-year-old former coach, gave precisely zero fucks.

Grant was a guest of honor for the ceremonial pre-game coin toss at mid-field. The 88-year-old Hall of Famer (did we mention he is EIGHTY-EIGHT YEARS OLD?) took the field in a purple polo shirt, looking more ready to hit a South Florida beach than endure temperatures cold enough to make a White Walker shiver.

The memes have already started (https://storify.com/startribune/former-vikings-coach-legend-bud-grant-earns-intern):

Both Bortles and Carr have done more for their team in two seasons than Clowney has. It's not even close. In two seasons, Clowney has 40 tackles, 4.5 sacks, zero interceptions and one forced fumble, and that's with Watt getting double and triple teamed each play. In hindsight they should have taken Mack, but when you look at who the Oilers Texans have put behind center, it's obvious Bortles and Carr would have helped the Texans without question.
Title: Re: The 2015 Running Football Thread (College & Pro)

Bortles and Carr will be fine.  Bortles has a stud No. 1 receiver and a number 2 that more than one team could make a 1.  Carr has Amari Cooper.

Speaking of Alabama...Coker needs to take his head out of his ass.  And someone cut Ridley's Adderall intake.  He's waaaaaaaaaaaayy too hyper.  Watson is a beast.  Renfrow seems to be able to get open at will.  BUT, Clemson's shut down corner is probably not playing the second half and I like 'Bama to run Henry alot in the second half.  That'll open up the play action downfield.  Should be super close until late.  Still like 'Bama, but Watson scares the bejeezus out of me!

Every coach probably played football at some point in their life, college or high school, but very few NFL coaches played in the NFL. This is from 2014 but not a lot has changed.

"In MLB, 83 percent of managers on opening day this year played in the major leagues. In the NHL, 60 percent of the head coaches reached the league and 43 percent in the NBA.

In the NFL, only 19 percent — six of 32 — of the head coaches who will lead their teams into the 2014 season played in the league.

...

The most successful head coach in the NFL today is New England's Bill Belichick, who played at Division III Wesleyan University in Connecticut. Miami Dolphins coach Joe Philbin played only one season of college football at Division III Washington & Jefferson College. Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy, a native of Greenfield, played at Baker University, an NAIA school in Kansas. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin played at Division I-AA William  Mary."

They greeted Walsh with some skepticism when he brought the West Coast offense in. I think with the right people Kelly's system could work just like the run and gun could rack up the points. You need the right team though.

They made the moves Kelly wanted and the team was horrible.  Offense sucked and the defense under performed.  Kelly's reputation is based solely on a couple of good seasons at Oregon.  I just think he's overrated just like Norv Turner.

Oh yeah he's no personal guy that's for sure. When he wasn't picking the players the offense was much better. I think with the 49er's he has a mobile QB to build around. He may be much more successful this time. Of course he could also sh*t the bed. We'll see.

Sweet merciful crap, the Niners have gone from good to hilarious dumpster fire in record time.

Unless Chip has learned some humility...and how to get along with players (reportedly, few in the Philly locker room were sad to see him go)...and has learned that his precious system doesn't mean a damn thing without the right personnel...and will adapt to what he has on hand...

So yeah, they're doomed.

Well I personally think we will be seeing the last Brady vs Manning Championship game next week.  I just don't see Manning coming back next year.
Title: Re: The 2015 Running Football Thread (College & Pro)
Post by: Con on January 17, 2016, 10:18:21 PM
Was discussing if Manning will not play again and here is my take

One of the biggest stats for QBs is number of career wins (when these guys pretend to say that they don't play for that and or don't know what their record is its all bullsh*t.  These guys live and breath football every second and its stupid to pretend that this doesn't matter to them).  Right now Manning is tied for first (with Brett Favre) for 186.  Brady is next with 172.

So if Manning rides off into the sunset at the end of this season he wont get the career wins title (its regular season only).  Plus Brady will beat him with 15 more wins.  If Brady plays for two more years (indicated that he would like to play for 4 more years).  That means that its almost 100% certain that Brady will take the career wins title from Manning in 2 more seasons (all he has to do is go 8-8 two years in a row).

So to prevent that and to take the career win Crown I bet that Manning will at least try and come back for one more year.

Now the question is where.  I think the Broncos move on from Manning next season (they already forced him to take a paycut).  So what team is desperate for a QB, has a great defense plays indoors (because Manning turns into a brittle frozen yeti outside in the cold) is in a crappy conference and has a legit shot at making the playoffs?  I present to you Peyton Manning wearing number 18 for the Houston Texans.

Lets see if this come true

I hope not.  The couple of games I've seen him play this year were not pretty.  He has no velocity on his passes, his accuracy is off, and the man looks broken and crippled when he tries to pick himself off of the turf.  Manning is going to be a sad sight to see in a few years after football.
Title: Re: The 2015 Running Football Thread (College & Pro)

I can certainly see Con's scenario playing out.  And for all the reasons stated.  But, as a drafter of Mr. Manning in fantasy football this year, I had to pay close attention to his performance.  Needless to say, it was craptastic.  The Manning name will not save him in the summer if he stinks up the joint.  And he's headed that way.  And I'm afraid Bison is right, too.  Four neck surgeries doesn't bode well for future quality of life.
Title: Re: The 2015 Running Football Thread (College & Pro)
Post by: Con on January 17, 2016, 11:31:34 PM
I agree Manning is but a giant fore-headed shell of himself.  However I believe he is going to want/need to play at least for an additional season to get that record.  The Texans went 9 and 7 in the AFC south with a roster of QBs that look like they play at high school level only.  It wouldn't be unthinkable that if they had Manning (even old brittle Manning)  that they could have eked out 2 more wins.  Plus lets not forget that the NFL is all about the dough and imagine the jersey sales for number 18 in the Texans uniform as well as the number of extra season tickets that would sell.  The cherry on the top is that the Pats play Houston away in 2016!  Brady Manning bowl XVIII

It's going to happen but I agree that Manning will be doomed as a QB since he is plummeting off the play ability cliff.

Yeah Peyton's done, for all intents and purposes.  He might still play...somewhere for another season or two, but it's going to be painful to watch if he does.

Incidentally, with the Steelers now eliminated, I officially no longer care who wins the Super Bowl.  As long as it's not the Patriots, of course.

Actually, I take that back; I'd kinda like to see the NFC take the crown back this year.  Really, though, I just want to see a good game come Feb. 7.

Ask the Bills about Superbowl appearances.

(By-the-by, there's a REALLY good 30 For 30 on Netflix about the Bills and their four-year run...it's called Four Falls of Buffalo. I HATED the Bills back in the day because I was a huge Dolphins fan at the time. But I grudgingly admit what a stellar accomplishment it was to go four flippin' years in a row.)

At least you won't have to ask the Texans. :(

Even when the Oilers were the Houston Oilers, they couldn't close the deal. (Not sure the AFL Championships count since those were pre-merger.) That beating they got by the Bills was fucking beautiful, even I must admit (and they talk about it a bit in that 30 for 30 I mentioned above). I HATED the Oilers. Goddamn Houston Oilers. First they self destruct in that game against a Bills team quarterbacked by Frank Reich. Then they blow a lead against that Chiefs team of old retreads (Joe Montana, Marcus Allen) in part by making the half time adjustment to let their rookie left tackle try to block Derrick Thomas by himself. Yeah, that went well... >:(

As for this year, Go Cards! They have a lot of players who I like, and they're getting old enough at some spots that the window is beginning to close. I'd like to see them win. Really, I'm just thrilled to see the stupid Seahawks gone.

Bison, do you really think if he wins that he'll retire.  I think he'll take it as a sign he's got a couple of more years in the tank.

Watch the Texans try to sign him. Even old Peyton would be an upgrade and make most of the fans here far too excited to stand up.

I think he retires if he wins. Coming back would gain him nothing. He has to grasp that he physically can't get it done anymore. A second Super Bowl ring would be a gift.

I think your just projecting the shitty Texans teams onto Manning.  That's like Browns fans blaming Ben Roethlisberger for them sucking so badly.  Or the Cowboys blaming the football for Tony Romo's suckatude.

No, I know the Texans suck no matter what.

I think part of it is the Texans not having had a QB worth a crap in their entire existence. Peyton is a leader and (arguably is/was) an athlete, I'll say that much for him. It's frustrating being a fan of a team whose management bungles the draft every damn year, though I know there's plenty of you out there that feel this exact same pain. QBs aren't exactly plentiful, unfortunately.

David Carr wasn't a bad QB.  The problem is, it's tough to play QB from your back, and the offensive line was stocked with matadors for most of his time with the team.
Title: Re: The 2015 Running Football Thread (College & Pro)
Post by: BanzaiCat on January 26, 2016, 11:06:33 AM
I think that poor kid was hosed from the moment that Tony Boselli was out. Until then, he was one of their best picks in the expansion draft. That guy was a monster and would have done well protecting Carr's blind side, but then again, one man can't play all the positions on the offensive line.

I agree, he might have been an awesome QB, but we'll never know. At least he had a sense of humor over the sacks.

The number of people here for and against Manziel being drafted was pretty much split evenly, and they were pretty vociferous on both sides, too. Funny that it seemed split along the lines of A&M haters and A&M circle-jerkists.

I was hoping we wouldn't see Manziel here as he was a tremendous douchebag. If he's matured at all then that might not be a bad thing to happen. At the same time, though, dammit, we don't need ANOTHER Cleveland QB cast-off.

Having a name like "Browns" in this day and age doesn't help much.

I looked up how the team got its name on Wiki, and it's interesting.

QuoteThe name of the team was at first left up to Paul Brown, who rejected calls for it to be christened the Browns. The franchise and the Cleveland Plain Dealer then held a naming contest to publicize the team, promising a $1,000 war bond to the winner. In June 1945, a committee selected "Panthers" as the new team's name, named after a failed American Football League franchise in Cleveland which only lasted a single season in 1926. It is unclear whether "Panthers" was the highest vote-getter, or if it was second-highest behind "Browns", which was again rejected by Paul Brown. However, the owner of the failed AFL Panthers franchise, General C. X. Zimmerman, indicated that he owned the name "Cleveland Panthers", and would insist on compensation if it was used. At this point, Paul Brown bowed to popular sentiment and agreed to the "Browns" name.

You have an odd definition of decent. Here is their record from 1990 -1995

3-13
6-10
7-9
7-9
11-5
5-11

Of course that record doesn't look horrible compared to the second coming of the Browns, 2 winning seasons in 20 year!

I was referring to their late 80s performances. 12-4 in 1986, 10-5 the next year, 10-6 the year after that. That was about it, though. I'm not defending their shittiness, just saying they did have a bright spot, and a relatively consistent one (at least as far as consistency applies to a handful of years).

I've been to Las Vegas twice. I'm far, FAR too poor (and married) to partake in the sins of that city. But while there, you learn things via osmosis. The city is far too decadent to allow anyone passing through it to NOT learn a thing or two just by standing near it.

That, plus hooker trading cards that they give away practically on every street corner. I never picked any of them up (no, seriously, I did not, I really didn't want to explain that to the wife), though if I go back I might just for the hell of it and scan them for you depraved goons.

Apparently the words class and professionalism aren't part of Cam's vocabulary.  Should have attempted your own fumble loser, when your team still had a chance to win.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton admitted he's a "sore loser'' in defending how he handled himself with the media after Sunday's loss to Denver in Super Bowl 50.

We'll talk about this one later.  He made a lot of shitty decisions in the game, but this one I think is actually defensible.  I'll explain over a beer one day.  Maybe at Origins?

I'm hoping to make Origins, but I'd rather talk about how I'm a loser after a few board games.

Wish the Panthers had won.

Looked like the Denver defense won the game.  The Denver defense was in the Panther backfield the entire game.  Panther receivers could not beat Denver in man-to-man coverage which speaks volumes about the quality of their receivers.

I hardly got to see any of the game - I spent 10 hours traveling that Sunday.

Ted Ginn was their #1 receiver. TED GINN. In the year 2016.

For the record, I have no problem with Newton being glum in post-game interviews. He SHOULD be down after losing that game. What I have an issue with is the tantrums he was throwing on the field in the 4th quarter. Dude, have some dignity.
