Title: Matakishi's Tea House (miniature making how to site)
Post by: GJK on September 16, 2013, 09:25:35 AM
I'm not sure if nevermore linked to this site or where or how I stumbled up on it, but I've been using his (her?) instructions for making structures out of cork.  I'll post some pics once I have something decent to look at, but I've made the Afghan compound that he has instructions for as well as one of the houses.  I have plenty of the cork that he recommends in order to make plenty more.  I bought the cork at my local "Hobby Lobby".  It came in a pack of 4 (5?) sheets of 12x12 inch squares.  The cork is a 1/4" in thickness.  I think that it was $8 for the pack.  A single pack will make a number of the buildings that he has instructions for.  I'm making them with his dimensions for 20mm (1/72) scale models.  15mm would work just fine and maybe 28mm (increase the size just a tad perhaps).

(this is his model.  I made the same.  Doesn't look quite this good but I will post pics later)

Here's the site - some good stuff here.  Perfect for making "Force on Force" models (explore the "Making Things" section, particularly buildings):

Interesting. I've never thought of using cork.

It works really well.  The corners where walls are glued together are reinforced with a balsa wood "joist" so it is actually quite sturdy.  I should be able to post up some picks of the ones that I've made over the weekend.

I made a couple test buildings using the cork. Works really well and a lot easier to work with than balsa. I'll have to try making some more, my others got mushed in the move to the new house.
