Title: From Russia With Love GB (Su-27SM)
Post by: JudgeDredd on January 16, 2016, 02:05:17 AM
I'm doing a group build over at International Scale Modeller and I thought I would share my progress here for anyone interested in scale modelling. It'll likely be slow going as I've got 4 months to complete it - and I have other things pulling on my time.

I'm by no stretch of the imagination a great modeller - but I learn new techniques all the time and I pick up some great ideas from the site.

Anyway - I'll copy and paste my posts here.

Hi all.

Very nervous. First GB and I'm full of trepidation because I've seen the quality of the work from members around here. I'm a very, very amateur modeller who makes about 2 or 3 models a year...so I'll bring what I can to this build.

This will be an OOB (out of the box) build. No after market parts. That's partly because I'm a tight sod - but also, I like to make do with what I'm given.

Anyway - the subject matter...

The Revell 1:72 Su-27 SM Flanker

A small video of it's entertainment value from Youtube

And some information (from wiki)

Su-27
The Sukhoi Su-27 (Russian: Сухой Су-27) (NATO reporting name: Flanker) is a twin-engine super manoeuvrable fighter aircraft designed by Sukhoi. It was intended as a direct competitor for the large United States fourth-generation fighters such as the Grumman F-14 Tomcat and F-15 Eagle, with 3,530-kilometre (1,910 nmi) range, heavy aircraft ordnance, sophisticated avionics and high manoeuvrability. The Su-27 most often flies air supremacy missions, but its most modern variants are able to perform almost all aerial warfare operations. Complementing the smaller MiG-29, the Su-27 has its closest US counterpart in the F-15 Eagle.

The Su-27 entered service with the Soviet Air Forces in 1985. The primary role was long range air defence against American SAC B-1B and B-52G/H bombers, protecting the Soviet coast from aircraft carriers and flying long range fighter escort for Soviet heavy bombers such as the Tu-95 "Bear", Tu-22M "Backfire" and Tu-160 "Blackjack".

There are several related developments of the Su-27 design. The Su-30 is a two-seat, dual-role fighter for all-weather, air-to-air and air-to-surface deep interdiction missions. The Su-33 'Flanker-D' is a naval fleet defence interceptor for use on aircraft carriers. Further versions include the side-by-side two-seat Su-34 'Fullback' strike/fighter-bomber variant, and the Su-35 'Flanker-E' improved air superiority and multi-role fighter. The Shenyang J-11 is a Chinese licence-built version of the Su-27.

This machine can perform the manoeuvre known as Pugachev's Cobra so beautifully shown in the video above.  The manoeuvre involves dynamic deceleration with briefly sustained level flight at a 120° angle of attack

Armament
It's armament for the Su-27 SM variant includes
1 × 30 mm GSh-30-1 cannon with 150 rounds
8 x R-77 advanced medium-range missile
6 x KAB-500KR and KAB-500L guided bombs
4 x Kh-29T/L air to surface missile
4 x Kh-31P/A anti-radar/ship missiles
4 x Kh-35 anti-ship missile

The Sprues

Lee's pet hate - sprues in one bag!
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1160.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq499%2Fwmar1967%2FModels%2FRevell%2520Su-27%2520SM%2520Flanker%25201-72%2FIMAG0743_zpslynkseu5.jpg&hash=1d78715571cb88e0012839fcb23cc25e1d205831)

And each of the sprues - the detail isn't bad and there's virtually no flash - I mean almost ZERO flash. That's a good start.

I've not actually started this one yet. I'm waiting on completing the Tamiya Sea Harrier I started. I've got 4 months to complete it anyway. I predict a start in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks for reading.

I've started - yaaay!

This will be slow as the super fantastic 6 Nations is on for the next 6 weeks and I'll be drunk most weekends (as a Scot, it's the only way to get through it)

Anyway. I made a start before I head off to Murrayfield to watch Scotland take on the mighty Auld Enemy.

It seems rather strange, but I've started at step 21. The reason for doing so is because the glue needs to set. The step is putting the nose weight in.

So - step 21 is putting 10g of weight in the nose
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1160.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq499%2Fwmar1967%2FModels%2FRevell%2520Su-27%2520SM%2520Flanker%25201-72%2FIMAG0830_zpspgneeddq.jpg&hash=d192e4a0c207d50849b0f466183513acb2ef752f) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG0830_zpspgneeddq.jpg.html)

First, getting the nose off, I had a bit of sanding to do to get rid of the sprue connections.

For that I used UMP Coarse sanding stick rubbed very lightly and then some UMP Fine sanding stick to remove any impressions the coarse stick left.
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1160.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq499%2Fwmar1967%2FModels%2FRevell%2520Su-27%2520SM%2520Flanker%25201-72%2FIMAG0828_zps8eolta2b.jpg&hash=5078de0358508dba417e866ecf0861599795e5e8) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG0828_zps8eolta2b.jpg.html)

Next, get some PVA into the nose and wipe it around. This was just a precaution measure to make sure the weight I was putting in would have something to bind to the side. I then put 9g of weight in using Liquid Gravity
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1160.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq499%2Fwmar1967%2FModels%2FRevell%2520Su-27%2520SM%2520Flanker%25201-72%2FIMAG0835_zpswyo7dhoa.jpg&hash=fad49245a49ff6eab66ac9ff51281d6c3dd369bd) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG0835_zpswyo7dhoa.jpg.html)

I then topped up the nose cone with PVA glue which took the weight to 11g
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1160.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq499%2Fwmar1967%2FModels%2FRevell%2520Su-27%2520SM%2520Flanker%25201-72%2FIMAG0837_zpszpozfwar.jpg&hash=2cc1529ef6b76800520ccb5e311f5fa0231598aa) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG0837_zpszpozfwar.jpg.html)

I was rather surprised at how much 10g actually was...I didn't think it was all going to fit in.

Hopefully, jumping ahead to this step is not an issue. I knew I had to put nose weight in and I knew it would have to set, so I decided to do it early.

And that's that. Sorry for getting your hopes up...I know there's not a lot here. But I do hope to get cracking in Feb and March (rugby aside).

Different aircraft...I'm building the Su27 and these parts are for the Su30

Thanks anyway - but I'm doing "out of the box". I did buy a cockpit kit but I'm unlikely to use it tbh. I just don't want to get into after market...it can considerably increase the cost of a model.

Maybe when I turn professional  :2funny:

Is the nose weight just to provide the model with better balance?

BTW, does anyone know where I can get some 1/200 scale WWII RAF decals online?  I finally tracked down a Hurricane Mk II miniature for Wings of Glory but it's got Belgian markings.  I'd like to change them to RAF ones but my hands aren't steady enough for that kind of detailed paint work.

Is the nose weight just to provide the model with better balance?

That's been my experience. The center of balance for a lot of tricycle landing gear models tends to be too far aft and without modification the plane will tail sit. That Liquid Gravity stuff looks like a great solution.

^ What he said. Aircraft with nose wheels generally sit on their arse with the nose wheel in the air unless weight is inserted.

Ok - no huge great shakes on the building front.

I decided to get some pieces built and, as is normal with me, I started with the weapons as they have to be made and painted prior to being put on the machine anyway - so if I make them first, I can prime them with the rest of the aircraft

So I got the missiles made that this bad boy carries - and she carries plenty.

First off, there were no letters on the sprues to identify the sprues - which seemed odd as the instructions had a sprue letter-number combo. Thankfully, at the beginning of the instructions, there's a graphic that shows the sprue letters...so I stuck a piece of paper on the sprue to easily identify it

And finally the Kh-31
From Wiki
The Kh-31 (Russian: Х-31; AS-17 'Krypton') is a Russian air-to-surface missile carried by aircraft such as the MiG-29 or Su-27. It is capable of Mach 3.5 and was the first supersonic anti-ship missile that could be launched by tactical aircraft. There are several variants, it is best known as an anti-radiation missile (ARM) but there are also anti-shipping and target drone versions. There has been talk of adapting it to make an "AWACS killer", a long-range air-to-air missile[/]

LOL @ the R-77 "propeller".

Those vaned fences, or whatever the official name of the odd steering vanes on the back may be, are certainly interesting.  Even without tough to reach sprue leftovers.  Looks like they'd cause more drag than needed. *shrug*

lol - I suppose I could've looked up what they were.

I assumed they wouldn't be powered like a propeller, but I imagined they would spin during flight.

I'm off to look now - see if I can find out what they are.

The aerodynamics are novel, combining vestigial cruciform wings with grid fins used as tail control surfaces (similar devices are used on the OTR-23 Oka, and USAF uses them on MOAB). Each surface consists of a metal frame containing a blade-like grid assembly which combines a greater control area, and thus lifting force, with reduced weight and size. The development for this control concept took three years of theoretical work and testing. These surfaces require less powerful actuators than conventional fins.[citation needed] The flow separation which occurs at high angles of attack enhances its turning ability, giving the missile a maximum turn rate of up to 150° per second. However, updated variants of the R-77, such as the izdeliye 180 that is destined for the PAK FA, will use conventional fins instead.[3]

Well, evidently the Fence-Vane thing is too costly and/or over-engineered if they're creating newer models with the old-fashioned steering planes in their place.  ???

So slooooooooooow. Sorry. Just not enough time in the week.

First off, a bit of filler was required for the Kh-31 missiles

Next, the cockpit. So I had bought a resin pit for this, but really didn't like the look of it. Whilst it was relatively detailed, it kind of looked, well...messy. Anyway, it came with a complete pit and seat but also with panels and a HUD for using with the stock pit...so I decided to use that.

This is the standard pit (detailed, eh?)

And this is the pit with the seat fitted and the resin panels. They were not a great fit, but I'm hoping the finish will be reasonable when painted...we'll see

Next is primer and painting the pit which I will probably do with the airbrush with a base colour and then touch up parts with a brush before dry brushing

Don't hold your breath. At this rate I'll be lucky to meet the April deadline!

Good god...so long since I put this to the side.

In truth I've been worrying about painting - shades, issues with the airbrush etc, etc...but it's just sucked the life out the enjoyment...so I've decided "screw it" and just get the bugger done!

These were actually primed about 2 months ago

I've been fretting over the colour. The instructions say some sort of grey (mix of colours) for the cockpit, but I've seen pictures showing blue - so I was in turmoil over that. Then once I decided I was going to do the blue colour, I started worrying about how I was going to get the right blue...as it is, I still don't, but I'm going to have a trial tonight for the cockpit and behind the cockpit

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1160.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq499%2Fwmar1967%2FModels%2FRevell%2520Su-27%2520SM%2520Flanker%25201-72%2FIMAG1011_zpsqkfz3a3y.jpg&hash=ff356f134db645e734c4edbed656c671d219f250) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1011_zpsqkfz3a3y.jpg.html)

The cockpit is the standard pit and the standard seat. I had bought resin (which I have never done before) but I thought the standard was better than the resin for both the pit and the seat.

That Russian Sky Blue color is pretty weird.  Close to a baby blue color, but with a hint of some slight aqua color in it.    ???

Was looking over my paint colors awhile back, also wondering if I could mix something close to it using what I had.  Got some MiG and Sukhoi minis that could use it on the bottom of the aircraft.  May end up just getting a bottle of something very close, if not some actual Russkie Blue, eventually.

I've been fretting so much over the colour I decided sod it - I'm putting paint on.

As it happens, I found a colour in my Vallejo and just decided to use that - unblemished. I had trouble with Vallejo paints when I first got them...turns out it may well be my mixing technique. So I mixed the paint with thinner in a cup before putting it in the airbrush...didn't get a blockage.

This is it...no going back. I'm done.  I've never been a "rivet" guy anyway...close enough is generally what I aim for.

The Vallejo paints of that sort are thick enough for brush use.  Hell, I slightly thin them even then.

I'd imagine you need to thin them quite a bit for an airbrush.

Although much of Vallejo's primer colors seem pre-thinned for air brushes.  I generally use brush-on primer for minis due to widely varying humidity & temp here, and the only Vallejo primer that has been thick enough for that use was a bottle of Black (not the gray or white I've tried).

....looking at other images, the colour seems to be a more green/blue - so I may well be revisiting this!!  :-[

Here are some Russian WW2 colors for a start (with a link in the image I'm too lazy to type in the url bar):

(above from a thread at https://ww2aircraft.net/forum/threads/russian-interior-design.16187/)

I got to see the interior of a Russian missile boat on display in the Fall River Museum (Battleship Cove, Massachusetts) and remember seeing that the metal surfaces were also painted with that weird blue primer. as opposed to the US ships' green zinc primer.

I think I've nailed it.

A mix of Tamiya paints - XF-23 (Light Blue), XF-71 (Cockpit Green) and a touch of X-14 (Sky Blue) - no measurements I'm afraid...I winged it.

Looks like you got that Russian Blue color done well.   O0

Especially the way it looks on the top fuselage piece.  Probably brighter light on it in the pic than the others.

Especially annoying as I love the look of these Russian aircraft, so I'll likely buy a few more!

The seat was looking a tad bland, so I put some white tack on it and some "hatching" markings in it...just a wee bit of xtra detail. I tried to put some tape seatbelts on, but my fat fingers won't let me  :'(

wow...that was much trickier than I thought. The pit (being 1/72) wasn't very detailed. I've done what I could. There was a couple of bits of after market resin I could put on the sides (though they had to be chopped and filed a bit to fit.

I also chucked some white tack on the seat to make it look like a cushion. I've put some dots of button colours etc - but it's all I've got really.

I didn't realise how bad my "hand shake" was until I started doing those wee details!

Thankfully none of those after market kits are for the Revell  ^-^

So I tried to put the top front part of the fuselage (the top comes in two parts...front section and rear section) and I could not for the life of me get the lugs to fit.

This had to be something to do with the front wheel well or the cockpit, because a dry fit of the top fuselage (both parts) fitted fine yesterday. It appeared to me it was the cockpit. The front wheel well had a lug at the rear - only one - and so that could not be out of place. Having said that, I don't think I did anything wrong with the cockpit either...I fitted it snug to the rear of the opening on the top fuselage as I could - as the instructions showed.

However, I did notice last night that the cockpit at the front was not making contact with the fuselage. This was because of the after-market hud I used. It was either ill fitting or I placed it slightly forward. Whatever the reason, this meant the cockpit was not making contact at the front with the fuselage.

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1160.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq499%2Fwmar1967%2FModels%2FRevell%2520Su-27%2520SM%2520Flanker%25201-72%2FIMAG1053_zps0jyk4so6.jpg&hash=c818af73ab281748228bcb9d48bf680d35f90419) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1053_zps0jyk4so6.jpg.html)

This in turn would have a knock on effect of the cockpit sitting screwey and therefore the snug fit between the cockpit and the front wheel well (the cockpit sits in front of the well but it looks like it should be very snug) was knocked out.

So - I had to removed some plastic from the cockpit and the wheel well in order to allow them to fit.

Now - this was my first time using my rotary tool EVER. First bad move. Second bad move was having it on high speed when I made contact with the plastic to shave some off. I was caught by surprise at the amount of plastic it was removing...and now I have some holes in the back of the cockpit. However, it is the back of the cockpit, behind the seat and so unseen!!

Lesson learned, I turned down the speed and went considerably slower over the front part of the wheel well.

Both sanded down somewhat meant the top front section of the fuselage could meet successfully (although very snug) with the lower section. Nightmare avoided for the most part!

Top part of the fuselage is on!

It was a tough fit. Tight (due to my error above) and not a great deal of places where you can put pegs to hold it (sloping airframe).

But she's looking good I think. I do love the shape of this aircraft

They also made some pretty weird ones back in the day. The recent ones are much more photogenic.

This is a Revell kit and they are cheap for a reason. They are a bit more difficult to build (less lugs etc) and also can be a poor fit. For the most part, this has been ok, but there are some parts that have required considerably more glue and pressure than other sections.

There have been sections that have required some Tamiya Ultra Thin (thank god for that!) to be spread along the joins as you can see from some of the images

All that will be covered by paint anyway

It's entirely possible I will not get this finished.

In fact, it's entirely possible I'm going to kick airbrushing to the kerb.

I went to use AK Xtreme Metal Gun Metal on the engine nacelles(?) and absolutely nothing was coming out. I turned up the air pressure to 30, 40 and 50 and eventually the tiniest amount was coming out...and then nothing again.

I really do not know what I'm doing wrong with airbrushing...but every time I go near it, I end up rage quitting.

For the record, I watched this video

and the guy makes it look soooo simple. No mixing or thinning...just in the cup and go...and yet, here I am struggling again.

I used to think I was over thinking things. In fact, my previous airbrushing attempt (the cockpit etc) went quite well and I thought (using the "consistency of milk" theory people had told me about) that I had nailed it. But seriously - if this guy is putting the paint into his cup with no thinning and sprays so easily - then what am I overthinking? There really isn't anything to it.

Prior to trying the paint I had some thinner in the cup (a tiny amount) which I blew out until the air coming out was just air...so there was no blockage in the brush!

So - I am desparately sorry if this does not get completed. Time was short. I knew that. But I was fairly confident I could get it done as it would be all I was doing for the next week. Unfortunately, I hadn't taken into account my ridiculously recurring airbrushing issues!

I'm going to keep trying and I will probably get it done...but it depends on how this airbrush (or my technique or whatever the issue is) plays up.

And yet - I went back, stripped the airbrush and cleaned it, put it back together, turned down the air pressure to 20 again and poured neat AK Xtreme Metal in and it sprayed - easy peasy!

I just don't get it. I have to strip my airbrush almost every single time (at least down to removing the needle)...not only is it very time consuming, but it's also expensive - I think I use considerably more cleaner than most people!

Anyway...paint went on absolutely fine. I wonder if it was blowing the thinner through first of all that maybe helped congeal the paint or something.

These were annoying. There was a rather thick sprue in the middle of the engine nozzles
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1160.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq499%2Fwmar1967%2FModels%2FRevell%2520Su-27%2520SM%2520Flanker%25201-72%2FIMAG1069_zpsaf8jboec.jpg&hash=83a60617125412c5b98ad9194ae2bfc291ddc424) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1069_zpsaf8jboec.jpg.html)
Cutting them out left rather thick pieces to be cut and sanded.

I recall using the IRST on the Su-27 for sneaking up behind enemy players and shooting IR missiles up their tailpipe without them ever knowing I was behind them.  In LOMAC/Flaming Cliffs multi-player years ago.  Because you could leave your radar off and scan with that, passively, without giving yourself away.   8)

Still very possible in the latest DCS version AFAIK.  If you can actually work up an IR detection on that damn IRST and get in position.  Not as easy as I remember it being in the older versions.

It's all taking so long. So many just "useless" bits in the kit. Sometimes I find a bit and think "why is that a separate moulding". But as I said before, it is an old kit. You can get new moulds with a lot of pieces, but they are generally easy to fit. This kit has a lot of parts and they are all quite difficult to put together.

It's definitely turning out to be a patience thing.

I've got a few more wee bits to do, then I'll be looking at spraying the whole model (less undercarriage/doors and weapons)

I'm concerned about the front undercarriage...it's very flimsy given the 10g of weight in the nose!

After doing all this tedious work on the wheels, I may well have to do this "wheels up" and stick it on a stand. The parts for the undercarriage doors are just too fiddly

This is what I mean. Rather than the door coming with the "latches" for connecting to the fuselage, you have two tiny little pieces that you have to glue to the door and THEN to the fuselage. It seems like it'll be a severe weak spot and the parts aren't sticking correctly.
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1160.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq499%2Fwmar1967%2FModels%2FRevell%2520Su-27%2520SM%2520Flanker%25201-72%2FIMAG1108_zpsbagaaamg.jpg&hash=7b32e5660afdd217863de49e15c7204f40cf3f3a) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1108_zpsbagaaamg.jpg.html)

I'll keep on with it. I have to paint the fuselage before fitting these parts anyway and then I'll see what I'm going to do. The bits above are not even the most fiddly sections!!

I have put quite a bit of work into the wheels though. I think I've probably spent in excess of 2 hours just cutting, sanding, painting and fitting!

Looks like a lot of extra little fiddly work.

Got my respect.  Don't think I'd have quite the patience these days.

Especially since I'm much more bent on doing projects all in one go, as I get older.  Didn't used to bother me, leaving something unfinished and just coming back to it in little bits, but somewhere along the way that changed.  Nowadays it drives me nuts when something isn't finished ASAP, and I don't always consider that a good thing.  :-\

I'm getting the same - must be an age thing.

This is starting to look like a Russian Su-27SM now  ;D

Taped up and ready to be painted.

For these parts I used damp toilet paper. When damp there's no "dust" off it, it's quite malleable and you can pull it around to fit the hole. I used Tamiya 10mm tape on the intakes.

And I've decided to give the cockpit sides and back a black coat instead of that blue (I think black was the correct colour anyway) hence I've left it uncovered

Got the primer down.

I had mixed results tonight. First, I mixed the Badger primer with thinner until I got the "milky consistency" talked about. Now, I know people say you shouldn't thin primer, but it clogs up my airbrush faster than a rainy day turning up in Glasgow. So I did thin it. But, it kind of clogged anyway.

Also, as it was thinned, the primer on the model looked "patchy". So, I put some fresh primer in and whacked the airbrush up to 40-50psi in the hope that the air blasting it out might stop it clogging...and, hey presto, it seemed to work.

So - primed and ready for painting

I'll be looking to paint tomorrow - at least the main colour with the coat of camo on Wednesday, clear coat on Thursday, decals on Friday with weapons and undercarriage being fitted and clear coat on Saturday. Cutting it very, very fine...but hopefully I will make it as Saturday is the deadline for the GB.

Are you going to put a camo scheme on it, or just the one color?

I'll be doing camo nef. I'm not sure what yet, but whatever I have time for. I love the digital camo out there...but I'm not sure I have time for that, so it'll probably be something simple.

Masked the canopy

I also decided to change the colour of the top of the pit...so I had to mask that up
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1160.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq499%2Fwmar1967%2FModels%2FRevell%2520Su-27%2520SM%2520Flanker%25201-72%2FIMAG1155_zps9szpqxlg.jpg&hash=8751bb4e12ab48856f2c28467ef996b433bb2f3f) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1155_zps9szpqxlg.jpg.html)

Then I painted it with a mix of Tamiya X-11 Chrome Silver, X-1 Black and FX-20 Medium Grey
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1160.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq499%2Fwmar1967%2FModels%2FRevell%2520Su-27%2520SM%2520Flanker%25201-72%2FIMAG1157_zpsw9bi7xsq.jpg&hash=9ffaddc4f4ea24b0b911472d42e445273ef4fd89) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1157_zpsw9bi7xsq.jpg.html)

However, I thought it was a bit too "shiny", so I put some pure X-1 Black on it to take some zing out of it and this is how it's ended up
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1160.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq499%2Fwmar1967%2FModels%2FRevell%2520Su-27%2520SM%2520Flanker%25201-72%2FIMAG1158_zpsgntrvwal.jpg&hash=74a32f4b26b70222f5ebfd8e7997df49f47cbb24) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1158_zpsgntrvwal.jpg.html)

Next step will be the camo and Klear (tomorrow) followed by metallic painting of the engine nozzles and more Klear on Friday followed by decals on Saturday and fitting all the wee pieces...and done...hopefully just in time. I presume I have until midnight on the 30th April (Saturday).......if not, oops.

If I ever do another one of these, I'll be starting considerably earlier.

Absolutely there is.  :(

That would be nice. It's different enough to be more interesting than normal camo but not needing as much work as digital camo.

However, I have so little time and the problem with it is that you have to put patches down and leave to dry before you can put the next colour down - purely because of having to go over the recent painted bit (in places) with tape so you can get the next "blocks" of paint down.

I'd like to do it, but it really depends on time.

I'm going to try and go for a splinter look...nothing too elaborate.

So I have some bleed and also some overspray

I'm still relatively upbeat. I have some grey to add which, if placed tactically, can deal with the overspray and bleed....as long as I don't get more bleed.

I think the bleed occurred from me not wanting to press the tape on too hard in case I pulled the base paint off. The overspray was me thinking I could be more controlled about my spraying than I actually can be.

That part was actually the easy part because you just stick random bits of tape on. The next bit I will have to be very accurate with the tape where it meets the white (which will be quite a bit because of the bleed!!).

that should get another color so use that to cover the overspray and edge bleeds.  you should also stick the tape to your shirt a few time as that removes a lot of the tac and makes it easier to pull off.  that also lets you press it down more firmly thereby reducing any bleeding at the edges.

Yes - I started that this morning.

It strikes me I've made the job harder for myself though with breaking up the white. I perhaps should've made block colours and then broke them up with the second colour.

Anyway - I'll be trying to put some grey down.

Thanks for the tip on the tape - never thought of that.  O0

I've given up getting this done by the deadline of tomorrow night. I simply will not be able to do it.

That's a huge weight off my shoulders and now I can take my time with the camo and make it (hopefully) super cool - without rushing. I was in danger of having to put tape on pieces of paint that hadn't had enough time to seal to the model...this way I can give it the time required.

I will of course continue to show it's progress here.

That's to all who showed any interest...I hope you enjoyed the journey.

This is a pretty late response, JD. Sorry, it's the first time I'm looking at the thread.

For the hand shaking problem, try painting close to your face and rest the back end of the brush on your cheek as you work. That always worked for me. It also helps you see the detail work you're doing better, unless you happen to be far sighted!

I have a little head piece with variable lenses on them which helps hugely with seeing small pieces

I'm far-sighted, so use something different.

For detailing, I use this..

Rest my elbows, placed together or somewhat close to each other, on the steady table top.  Then place my wrists together, brush in one hand and model in the other.  With your wrists together and resting on the sturdy surface, it's easier to make small precise brush movements without shaking or slips.

You can probably notice the difference in stability just by doing it on your table right now.  O0

It may take a bit more time to reposition & rotate the model around, but this lends me the most control without having to get my eyes too close.

Well - it's been a while.

I was on a spurt back in the last few days of March 2016 to get this completed for a group build competition called From Russia With Love over at International Scale Modeller - and was so stressed out doing it, decided not only to drop it but also not take part in any group builds anymore.

It wasn't the competitions fault - it was mine, leaving the model sitting for weeks and trying to get it completed in the last week and completely underestimating the difficulty (not to be confused with complexity) of Revell models. They are cheap for a reason.

Anyway - I couldn't throw it away...I'm not like that...and I couldn't go on to another model...I'm not like that...but I also couldn't face picking it up again through the year. So the result was not only did I not get this completed last year, but I never did anymore modelling last year.

However, this year I've decided I'm going to get it done. I have no idea how long it's going to take and I have no idea how it's going to turn out. It's been sitting around for a long time, it's covered in dust, I've assembled bits before painting (the engines should've been masked around before putting the tails on) and I pulled out the cotton wool I had stuck on the cockpit to keep it covered whilst I painted it - not realising it was going to leave so much fluff behind - bad move.

So it's going to be a pita - and that's why I've put it off.

So - as I said - I'm going to finish it. If I end up ruining it, then I can throw it - but I'm not throwing it until I've attempted to complete it. In other words, I'm not just throwing it so I can move on - I think I'd be setting an expensive precedent.

So here it is in it's current state. I've re-masked the canopy and stuck it on as the cockpit was done anyway. I'll be painting a black stripe (anti-glare?) on the front of the cockpit and the canopy itself. I'll also paint the engines and hopefully, somehow, mask them up so I can paint the rest of the model. I'll be doing a light grey/dark grey/black camo pattern

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1160.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq499%2Fwmar1967%2FModels%2FRevell%2520Su-27%2520SM%2520Flanker%25201-72%2FIMAG1823_zpsvwdvjvwd.jpg&hash=402ad1ce564f110b8b2fdcf21297b8555938f066) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1823_zpsvwdvjvwd.jpg.html)

So - we'll see how this ends up. It's a beautiful plane and I'd love it to turn out right rather than throw it away.

Oh - the aircraft is painted with acrylic black primer and covered in dust and greasy finger marks - what should I used to clean it? White spirit? Baby wipes (as they have alcohol in them)?

Egads, I don't know. You could try the alcohol wipes. If they end up taking some primer off you could carefully do another coat (after the alcohol evaporates!).

So I'll try some white spirit and a cloth

I guess I don't understand the issue.  Are you not painting over the primer?
Title: Re: From Russia With Love GB (Su-27SM)

Yes, but it's covered in dust and greasy marks from fat, burger eating fingers.

So I need to give the model a wipe with something before spraying any paint anywhere near it

I suppose you're trying to get rid of the fingerprint ridges, and any other such goop that may stick up and show through some light painting.

Don't think I'd recommend alcohol.  Would expect that to create it's own problems on the primer.

Perhaps just using one of those non-paper smooth cloths meant for wiping LED/LCD tv screens clean?   Because they don't leave any of that annoying paper residue.   Just not sure if using liquid on your primer would be a great idea, though.

I don't think those dry-wipe LCD cloth wipes are meant to be used that way, but instead are meant to lift dust & such off the surface without wetting.

Edit:

like a Microfiber cloth?

The ones that feel like cloth, but slightly rubbery?

or just one of the disposable screen cleaners?

Use a very fine grit sandpaper and scuff it lightly. Then reapply the primer.

Not that I know anything about modeling that warrants me giving advice.

I think this is being over thought.  Use some canned air to blow of dust and use a microfiber cloth to wipe it down.  I just cannot imagine some finger print grease doing much to ruin the next coat of paint.  Many people hold their minis during painting without affecting the paint job.

Pretty much what I was thinking. After removing the dust use a clean eyeglasses cloth to wipe off excess oils. Then paint right over the rest.

Isn't that the point of primer?
Title: Re: From Russia With Love GB (Su-27SM)
Post by: Bison on January 16, 2017, 08:20:34 PM
Primer provides a rough surface for the paint to adhere.  Models and minis should be washed to remove residue left over from the molding prices.  This left over residue and a smooth surface are more likely to cause issues with the paint than I think a little finger grease unless he's using his model as a napkin to wipe his hands on while eating fried chicken.

If you look at the bottom of page 5, it shows where the masking tape took some paint off the model. That particular part of the model is the handy part to hold and gets a lot of holding.

Now that was probably down to touching the bare plastic there and not cleaning the model prior to laying paint on it - so I may not suffer the same problems with primer being down - but I was worried it might happen again especially as I'm going to be putting tape down again for the camo pattern

Anyway - thank you - advice taken.

I am actually thinking about taking the paint off and starting again. I know that will be a pain, but there are "ridges" where I tried that digital pattern camo before and failed.

Ah...now I see the issue.  Yeah I'd think that was just a combination of a residue under the primer layer and the tape pulling the primer off of the model.  That is annoying though, but should be a relatively easy fix.  Maybe your camo design will help cover any irregularity in layering.

I'm a dedicated JD fan, I'll read about your modelling, your skill for cocking up a game and flat refusal to read the manual, your new game crack habit but having read your most recent posts on this model matey it genuinely sounds like you don't want to finish it, that it's going to an arsehole to complete at the cost of doing another one you'd enjoy

I'm all for the never give up attitude, but this is your hobby to relax, to get away from it and actually enjoy - if this one is going to be such a ball breaker put it away and start another, I don't think there's a sentimentality to it (JD junior didn't buy this one did she?)

I don't think it'd be defeatist to move onto a project you'll look forward to completing

Well - it's fixed now in the sense that the primer is now down.

But as I've handled the model, I didn't want the camo being picked off the primer as happened above. But I think you're right - it probably wouldn't happen now there's a solid layer of primer down.

Shucks - you have my number mate  ;D

No - there's no sentimental value here. You are correct - it has been an arse and I do have other splendid models to make, not least

Thing is though, I don't really want to give up on it. It's just going to be an awkward finish. All I really have to do is

It's just I've assembled it in such a way that it will be awkward to paint - but the damn thing is almost done. I'm also scared that if I dump it, it will become easy to dump models when I get bored.

Besides, it's a beautiful looking aircraft. It'd be a crying shame not to complete it.

I will say this though. I will research in future and not just buy cheap because cheap almost always means "old mould" and those are difficult.

I need to do it.

But thank you for your support

Right - I had to "bastardise" the model a bit. In order to successfully mask the engines so I could spray them the metal they should be, I had to break of the bottom stabilisers and top rudders.  :uglystupid2:

I just couldn't get the masking tape in....

So I broke them off, masked and painted with AK Extreme Metal Gun Metal AK 483 and I have to say, I like the finish  <:-)  Lets hope the rudders and stabilisers go back on easy enough.

Well...I'm taking my sweet time with this one (it's been an horrendous chore) - but it's almost done now. Paint done. All decals are on (ok, not all, but there were over one hundred and over 50% of those were really, really small and insignificant).

Unfortunately, I got a bit of silvering from a couple of the decals. I don't know whether that was me not doing enough in the steps to prevent silvering or the decals

What's left

I'm not overly happy with the scheme. It didn't go as I had hoped but I am soooooooooooooo tired with this model and it's been stopping me modelling because I couldn't drag myself back to it...but I've finally done it, bitten the bullet and I had to just do what I could do.

I'm not particularly happy with my attitude "it'll do" either - but that's better than the alternatives which were never completing it and not building anymore or just throwing it in the bin so I could get modelling again.

Unfortunately I have. I put a Klear layer on then used Microset before putting the decals on followed by Microsol and then another coat of Klear. It was only really those two decals - so either I didn't put enough coverage of Microset on, or it's just because of the decals which had a "full" middle section.

Next time I'll either make sure I have plenty of Microset on or I'll cut out the middle of these kind of full decals.

if you think its worth the bother get a really sharp pin and poke a few holes around the silvering and apply more microsol.

It's done....IT'S DONE I TELL YOU!

Well - the deadline for this was April 30th 2016. So I'm just short of a year over schedule.

Actually - it's been a journey. A trial. A test of character. Other mere mortals would've chucked it in the bin and moved onto other, better, more enticing models. But I couldn't. I knew if I did, the next time I was challenged it would be easier to do such a thing.

Here she is. All done. I don't think, given some of the things I faced, that she's turned out too bad at all.

But thank god it's over. I can move on and finish my Leopard 1A4 and then onto some of my other exciting models.

Nicely displayed.

Do I see a bit of Operation Chastise there on the top right bookcase? Is that one next?

I'm embarrassed to say I didn't know what Operation Chastise was and had to Google it. Of course I know of the famous Dambusters raid - but I did not know it's official military designation :-[ :-[

But no - it's not a model. My daughter's boyfriend bought me this (a kind of metal plaque) for Christmas.

That plaque is quite nice.

You should mount it on a nice piece of distressed or finished wood with some extra thick rubber spacers behind the mount holes to give the whole thing depth. Use some small anodized hex lag bolts and washers to hold it on for an engineered look.

Actually - thinking about it - it's clear that Where There is Discord is very popular - just looking at the money it commands for a second hand version.

Why does the creator not Kickstart a re-print??

A lot of people ask that question, I'm sure.  About numerous popular ones.
