Amazing work!
He might be using LEDs inside the explosion wadding. StarFury posted a link a while back of the same technique used in a diorama of an Imperial Star Destroyer exploding:

He's using a light-bulb that he places inside a cage made of chicken-wire. He shades it with red, orange, and yellow cellophane and then covers the cage with cotton which he paints. I tried something similar to make flame and smoke clouds for Wings of Glory but mine look like black and orange turds. His look fantastic.
