Title: So. We got a cat. So far I am thoroughly underwhelmed
Post by: Huw the Poo on March 30, 2016, 03:46:04 PM
She just sits in her bed all day long.  She comes downstairs for about ten minutes first thing in the morning.  She drags her lazy arse out of bed to eat food.  She will sometimes sit on one of the kids' beds while they sleep.  But 95% of her life seems to be spent in her bed and she absolutely will not come to us if we beckon or call her.

BORING.

What's the point of having a pet you can't interact with?  You may as well be watching TV or some shit.  I wish we could have a dog instead.

Step 1: Place cat on kitchen floor (or any floor with linoleum or tile - no carpet)

Step 2: Spin cat in circles like a top

Step 3: ? ? ?

Step 4: Profit!

LMFAO - you bought a cat for this?

but seriously - the poor sods no idea who you are or what youre doing in its house, give it some time

Picking a cat is like spinning a roulette wheel. You might land on a cat that's actually cuddly and playful...or you might completely miss the mark and end up with an anti-social asshole.

If that's what we've got, I'll gladly take her back.  A pet you can't interact with may as well be a painting on the wall.

The kids seem to like her, but then all we've had until now is hamsters so as far as they're concerned even a boring cat is a step up!

If you've had the cat less than a few days it may indeed still come out of it's 'shell' in due time. As Geek said, the poor thing is probably still in "WTF??!!" mode.

How old is it? Early post-kitten stage?

I would agree that kitty might need more time. We took in a stray a couple of years ago that's just now starting to become very friendly.
That said, I'm a dog person and when I retire I will have another pug.

Huw, give her a few days to get used to you. Cats have to decide whether or not you deserve their attention. Then try a toy to get her to plat a little like a small rope or catnip stuffed mouse. Cats also love to play with any bird feather you find. Cats hate to be ignored so either use this to acknowledge their presence or aggravate the hell out of them whichever is most appropriate for the occasion.

Sounds like a cat to me.  They are lazy, inconsiderate, assholes that occasionally earn their worth as a pet by stooping to your less than cat level of existence by allowing you to pet them.   In exchange for allowing you the privilege of petting them, they will also permit you to feed them, give them water, and clean out their dirty litter box.  Cats are lovable jerks, which is probably  why I enjoy their company.

This is the best advice so far. It takes time to develop a relationship with a cat. They are generally very intelligent (occasionally doing eye wateringly stupid things), but are very picky about who they will spend time with. Playing with them is a great way to form a bond with them. Sir Slash is definitely right with all he's said. O0

Sir Slash, thanks for the advice.  I do try to play with her quite often but most of the time she just stares at me.  I guess I'll keep trying.  She has been coming out of her bed for slightly longer each time.  You'd think she'd be bored as hell!

Catnip can help break the ice.  But forsome cats, it is like a drug.  Just a little to get the cat to open up has worked well.

I miss cats. As a teen we had a stray show up at our door so my mom started feeding her, and of course she stuck around. A bit later she had kittens and my mom brought her inside; the mom cat literally lived in my room and would not step foot outside because she couldn't stand her offspring after they grew up. The offspring were pretty much assholes, though, while the mother cat was a sweetheart. Fortunately my mom gave away the assholes and the mother cat stuck with me until I moved in with my future wife.

She's allergic to cats, so we've not had one in our house. Though whenever we're at a friends' house that has cats, cats LOVE her. I think their inborn asshole radar is perfectly attuned to such situations. ;D

Yeah we got some catnip right away because we heard it was a good way to keep her interested in toys she gets weary of.  The last thing I want is for her to ever be bored (even though she seems hell bent on doing it to herself anyway).  It is amusing watching her attack a catnip-laced toy mouse!

She actually played with me a fair bit today; I was dangling some string and for ten minutes she and the string were mortal enemies.  She doesn't come downstairs much yet but hopefully she will in time.

Nah.  People who don't like cats tend to tense up and hunch their shoulders. Cats see that as a sign of friendship and head on over to visit their new buddy.  Want to make friends with a cat?  Get down to their level and hunch your shoulders slightly.

Also, you should try not to make direct eye contact because it's a sign of aggression.  If you do, blink slowly as that's a sign indicating non-threatening status.  That's the reason cats seem to go towards people who don't like cats.  The lack of eye contact, the slightly hunched shoulders, and a pulled in chin are all friendship/submission indicators to cats.

Two words.

Laser.

Pointer.

Unless you're allergic to cats (as above noted  ;) ), you'll often have to work to form a friendship with them. 3 years old is adolescent for a cat, or young adult, and well past the super-social kitten stage (though some cats never outgrow that).

Also, cats sleep an average of 16 hours a day. But for many cats, significant amounts of that sleep happens when they seem to be awake. Cats have trouble distinguishing between being awake and asleep, so to a cat the real world looks like dreaming and vice versa. So many or most cats are naturally schizophrenic, which along with their somewhat alien instincts (by human standards) leads to a lot of the amusingly or infuriatingly (or sometimes even dangerously) insane behavior.

Reducing the food level can help the cat's hunter/social instincts kick into gear, too.

The breed of cat can be a factor as well. Some cats have been bred to just sit there and look around. But you're less likely to get that behavior from a predominantly black cat or a Russian Blue (to give two examples off the top of my head).

Yeah we have a laser pointer (we were very well prepared for this moggy!), and of course, she's completely uninterested in it.  Your other points are noted Jason, thanks - especially about food; she's currently fed three times a day which seems like a lot to me but it's what she was on at the charity.  Maybe we'll wean her down to two feeds.

Well, that's what cats do best :)

Seriously now, a cat will take around 6 weeks to feel at home and bond with their humans. Do not let her get outside before that.

Also, but a laser pointer and some catnip toys (meth for cats).

Yeah, we definitely won't be letting her outside any time soon.  We need to be at least fairly sure she'll want to come back.

I just read something the other night about laser pointers and cats.  The article said that after using the pointer, you should have a toy for the cat to 'catch.'  Otherwise, it will feel frustrated and may act out.

You might want to read up on laser pointers and cats. It's not a good thing for some of them. We had to stop with our cats because one of them would continue to look for it long after we quit playing with him.  :o

That dovetails well with what MD posted. Also, (do I even need to say this?) NEVER allow the beam to hit the cat in the eye. There is no 'safe' laser pointer as far as the retina is concerned, animal or human.

I have two cats , one we rescued and one we got off a friend of ours when her cat had kittens . I LOVE them both , they're an absolute joy in my life :)  my black cat is super intelligent and you can see it in his eyes , he can open my bedroom door and it's a latch !! My other cat is sooooooo ditsy in comparison , but she makes me laugh so much with her antics ! She loves to climb trees , but can't get down . My other cat , the brainy one , once showed her how to get down . He patiently sat at the bottom of the tree , and kept going up and down it , just to show her how to climb down , and he would NOT leave her side until she managed it , and she did . He's strangely protective  of her , which is so adorable and funny , because she has her head in the clouds and just merrily lets him look after her , very sweet  :smitten:  also if he wants to sit in her chair ...... Oh yep , she has claimed one of our chairs in the lounge as her own  ;D , he licks her to death Until she moves over for him and let's him sit with her ......they're like a flippin married couple !!

I seriously love watching how they interact . And they both seem to read my moods really well , if I'm down or in a bad mood they'll come and cuddle up with me :)

Please give yourself and your cat time to get to know each other , I agree with other people on here , once you bond , wow , you've got a friend for life . Despite what other people say , I think they are loyal . My brainy cat will even play go fetch in the garden with me .....maybe he thinks he's a dog !!!,  ;D shhhhhh , no one tell him he isn't !,

My late cat Alex was a puppy cat. He loved attention and always wanted to be where the action was. If you were sitting down and even glanced at him he took it as an invitation to jump up on the couch or right in your lap. I had 19 good years with him (longer than a typical lifespan Huw, you are forwarded if you get to like your critter) and after nearly 7 years I still miss him.

My Siamese was the same.  Total whore for attention.  I think he thought he was a dog as well as we got him when he was very young and the rent of the litter.  He started putting on a lot of weight even when we'd cut his feeding down to 1/2 can a day.  We then discovered that he was making the rounds of the retirees on the block and getting a good 2-3 meals in per day.

I am one thousand percent astonished that the cat has no interest in a laser pointer.  :o But yeah, they have to be used rightly so as not to risk eye damage: they aren't inherently safe. So there's that.

Sounds like progress is being made, but you may have to settle for a laconically superior cat, at least for a while.

I would have been much, much happier with a dog.  However with all of us being out for ~10 hours a day Mon-Fri it just wasn't possible - hence, a cat instead.

She made real progress tonight.  She's sat on everyone's lap for quite some time each, and all told she spent more time downstairs than upstairs today. :)

I had a cat like that, too. He grew up with dogs, so he acted like them. I ended up having to give him to my folks when he just kept growing...and growing...and growing. He outgrew the basement suite I'm in. He's not fat, he's just gigantic.

He continues to act like a dog over there. Greets visitors at the door, does the rounds to account for his humans, sees people off, the whole deal. It's hilarious.

My two are different as chalk and cheese. Both are rescues. One is older and had been a stray before we got him. He's often quite antisocial, can look after himself, and he terrifies some of the neighbours cats. He is a good hunter. He can be quite affectionate, but usually only on his terms. He and my son get on very well.

The other is much younger. A rescued kitten, a ginger and white short hair, he's turned out a complete softie. He is also part Siamese (we think). He got his first kill - a mouse - the other day, and was very proud of himself.

Both wrestle from time to time, which is fun to watch, although the tabby sometimes gets a bit brutal in his play and we have had to intervene. Fortunately our ginger hasn't been badly hurt, and is never really fazed for long. He just loves to play and will stalk the tabby just for the fun of it. The ginger will sit next to me when I'm on the PC and likes to lie down on my keyboard, which almost always gets attention - not so stupid after all!

Sounds to me like she's looking for her "person".  While cats can/may be quite friendly to all the resident peoples, they tend to gravitate towards one in particular.

10 years ago, my wife picked up a crying 9 day old kitten in Tennessee across from her late father's house.  The kitten was in an old trash barrel that the locals had used to burn trash.  I suspect Momma cat was either moving her litter to/from the barrel when my better half intervened.  My wife raised that little kitten, bottle fed him, wiped his little kittie butt and even spent a few nights on the hard floor sleeping next to him.  While he loves her and hangs with her too, guess who he picked as his person...and it irritates my wife to no end to this day >:D

Picking a cat is like spinning a roulette wheel. You might land on a cat that's actually cuddly and playful...or you might completely miss the mark and end up with an anti-social asshole.

Arctic Blast is 100% correct – it is effectively a crap shoot. My cat of 15 years died in July 2014 and two days later my wife and I went out and picked up a brother and sister kitten combo from the local pound.

A year + later and the boy cat is super large yet very skiddish and the definition of a scaredy cat. When he does interact he barks and act like a dog, which is strange because he has never been around one.

The girl cat is very smallish but brave as shit and knows no fear. She is the definition of a little princess in terms of sweetness though.

It really is a crap shoot in terms of personality and interaction.

Nearly two years on, and I am still as thoroughly uninterested in the bloody cat as she is in me.

As it stands, she actually trusts me and my lady; she'll come to us and sit in our laps (with a lot of encouragement), but she's still quite wary of the kids because they're so energetic.  She hates movement of any kind.

I don't fucking like cats, and this one is a prime example of why.  They're more decoration than pet.  You just can't do anything with them.  They're totally pointless.

I've had the opposite experience with cats. Ours act like dogs and are very loving. I was walking home a couple of nights age and a random cat came running up to me meowing, just wanting to be pet. It had a collar on and as I walked away it went back towards it's house.

Our neighbor across the street has a cat. When the weather is decent it's out roaming around. It's a very friendly one and often I'll find it just having a snooze in my driveway. And it totally loves petting and will meow at me when it sees me to be sure I don't not see it.

I never had a cat growing up.  When my kids were young, we got a dog and a cat.  The dog was lovable and a great companion and we considered him to be part of the family.  The cat?  She was irascible, and the only time I saw her was when she was eating the food (that I had paid for).  The only good thing about the cat was that she was low maintenance.

A few months ago we temporarily "acquired" some cat that wandered in.  It couldn't be more different to ours: it was friendly, came to us without hesitation, sat on our laps etc.  I could almost be friends with a cat like that one.

But no.  Eventually it buggered off and we were left with our disgusting creature who apparently hates all life.

One of our previous cats (they mostly don't last long around here, due to coyotes, hawks, owls, trucks, etc.), I theorized wasn't only schizophrenic (...it's important to realize that all cats are schizophrenic -- they're asleep 16 hours a day, sometimes even when they look awake, so their dreams bleed over into reality).

No, this cat clearly had a second brain in her butt.

Usually this hindbrain helps coordinate them, although on some cats when they're running in fifth gear (the loping bound before they shift to warping across reality) the hind legs don't run in the same direction as their front legs. Five to ten degrees off beam.

That was this cat, but the voices in her butt told her to do things, too.

{walking by a potted plant}
{suddenly attacks the potted plant}
"Dear, why are you attacking that plant? It didn't do anything to you!"
"The voices in my butt told me to kill it!"
"But, that's a fake plant. It isn't even alive. You can't--"
"AN UNDEAD PLANT! -- CLEARLY IT MUST DIE!"
"...I think you're just being murderous because you think it's adorable."  :smitten:

That reminds me, there's one odd thing this cat does.  We have a balustrade upstairs, and she sometimes lies next to it.  Now, if you stroke her while she's there - fine.  But if you walk halfway down the stairs so that you're on the other side of the balustrade, and try to stroke her through the bars, she claws at you.  Every time.  I can't work out whether she means it or whether it's supposed to be some kind of game.  If you do this, then walk back upstairs and stroke her - again, fine.  So weird.

My cat had some weird habits like that.  She would only let me pet her in two places.  One was when I was in the basement working on my bikes.  The other was outside back in the old days when we had a newspaper delivered.  She would be waiting for me in the morning outside to get the paper, and when I'd walk out on our walk, she would lay down and let me pet her.  However, if I made the slightest noise, like scuffing my shoes, she'd tear off in a frightened frenzy.

Yeah ours is absolutely terrified constantly.  We got her from Blue Cross (https://www.bluecross.org.uk) - a service for rehoming abused/abandoned animals - and they mentioned she'd had a couple of pretty unpleasant homes before they got her.  So I guess that's a big part of it, but any sudden noises or movements really startle her.  It took a long time for her to even start trusting the kids, simply because they're so energetic and she hates that.

Cats are also freaaaaaakkkkkishly pattern-oriented. (That's a generalization, ofc; but anyone with long experience with cats will recognize what I'm talking about.) Once something happens a particular way, they can lock onto that as being THE WAY and if something else happens they can't or won't accept it.

This combination of being both ultra-conservative and radically liberal (in American political terms), often results in hilarity. And annoyance. And general wtfery.

For example, while Banzai's first meme is certainly a valid interpretation -- cats do often do things just to be different or to mess with you, or to get attention -- I would bet a Coke there's a 50/50 chance, maybe better, that that cat found a sunbeam there once, and so now at that time of day the cat is going to breadbox up there because a sunbeam once happened there. Or something equivalent and maybe even more random: another cat hopped in the higher catbag first and rather than have a clawfist about it, the orange/white cat breadboxed up nearby. And now at that time of day THAT IS HOW THE NAPPY WITH EYES OPEN MUST BE!

I'll tell you a couple of things our little bastard learned very quickly - the sound of the food cupboard being opened, and where we keep the bit of string.  She lets us know she wants to play when she sits right underneath where the string is kept and occasionally meows.

To be fair to her, she loves that bloody string and she'll play with it regardless of who's holding it, even the kids.  After 5-10 minutes she gets bored, and I give her a snack to reward her for being social.

True to form, there's precisely one brand of snack she'll actually eat.  She doesn't even like catnip-based snacks, despite enjoying licking catnip off a toy.  In fact, now I think of it, between snacks and toys and furniture and stuff, probably 95% of the money we've spent on her has been wasted.  Ungrateful shite.

It sounds to me like progress is being made!  :bd: :coolsmiley:

Just not fast progress.

Cats are basically an affection-strategy simulator. Some are set on hard-mode, and take a lot of small steps; but when you get there, you can appreciate the achievement that you accomplished something difficult.

(They're also good as a theology illustration: God dealing with us == us dealing with cats.)

I've got a dog that does that.  In fact, he doesn't wait for them to get in the house, he runs a perimeter a couple hundred yards around the house.  When he catches them, he tosses them in the air, bats at them, stomps on them.  Pretty fun to watch.

So next time I was at the shop I loaded up my cart with that food and came home greeted by a meow...with a smile I filled the feeding dish with what I brought home...the ruler of my house sniffed at it, looked at me with that special "disgusting!" expression and slowly walked away...learn to be a humble servant of your cat and she might tolerate you in the house  <:-)

Rule number one when playing with your cat... you always let them win - give them a challenge, but let them win.

About Christmas time, someone dropped off 3 kittens at our neighbors.  He's never figured out who did it.  So, being barn kittens, he made a spot for them in the greenhouse, since it was empty for the winter.  It's heated though, with the heat off of his wood burner.

The other day, he went out and there were 4 of them.  The fourth looked just like that one above.

Yeah someone gave me some advice two years ago - might have been Jason - that cats get frustrated if you never let them catch whatever it is you're getting them to chase, and I've always remembered that.

Typical cat trap.

Assumes the 'rub my belly' position with a sweet look on its face.

You are allowed exactly one rub then you must immediately remove your hand; otherwise you are treated to a four footed attacked highlighted by the back rakers leaving your hand ribboned with scratches.

When a cat places itself in a vulnerable position like this in front of you that means he trusts and likes you.  If he's doing that for you that means you are doing it right!   :)

Very cute kitty btw.

Thanks mate.  Yeah she is cute, I'll give her that.  She definitely trusts me and my lady more than the kids, although she'll sit with all of us these days.  She also sleeps on my son's bed, although that's probably because he's in the top bunk.

Maybe he's the smallest, and looks like the easiest to eat should the food bowl suddenly be empty?   ;D http://www.orlandosentinel.com/features/gone-viral/os-cats-kill-you-bigger-study-post.html (http://www.orlandosentinel.com/features/gone-viral/os-cats-kill-you-bigger-study-post.html)

I see a cat blog here to rival Simon's cat and earn fortunes

The little banzai that sits on my shoulder and whispers inappropriate shit in my ear says huw fingers pussys but he's a bad man and shouldn't be listened to

When UCG says a 'banzai' whispers inappropriate shit in his ear, one can only take that as a compliment.

We gave her some catnip today and had an amusing 15 minutes watching her roll around on the floor like a loony.  I'm thinking of adding it to her weekly feed.
