I'm watching "The U Part 2" on ESPN right now, and they're talking about the 2001 season.

One of 'em just pointed out that Miami was so loaded that year that they had
Antrel Rolle
Sean Talyor
Vince Wilfork
Kellen Winslow Jr
Willis McGahee
....  on the bench

wow.

edit:  in home games that year, they outscored opponents 306-17.

Being an SEC fan is like being a Yankee fan.  Every one hates you because you win.  And it doesn't matter what they say, it's all basically sour grapes.  Because, if you gave THEIR programs the opportunity to be as good as the winners, they'd JUMP at the chance!  So, hate on the SEC all you want.  You know you want to be them :)

Just so there is no misunderstanding, I do NOT think that a preseason poll means much.  Yes, it's a talking point.  And it serves as a picture of what people around the nation think of the teams for the upcoming season.  Beyond that, there is nothing you can glean from it that means anything.  Having said that, it also serves as a point for discussion and debate for fans on what is expected of their teams and conferences, at least in the beginning.

Which brings me to the SEC.  There are 8 teams in the preseason poll.  The next closest is the Pac 12 with 6.  The ACC has 4.  The SEC had every one of their 14 teams, with the exception of Vanderbilt, get at least 1 point in the poll.  Can your conference say that?  I don't think so.  And as the year goes on, the SEC will eat its own.  And while 8 seems a large number to maintain, I suspect that the end of season poll will contain just as many SEC teams as right now, give or take 1 or 2.  Will your conference be able to say the same?

They need to bring back the old SWAC conference.  That's what I think.  I also think that pre-season polls suck and that DIV I college football to reduce the number of regular season games and institute a real playoff like every other NCAA football division and sport.

4 teams is not a playoff.   I'm saying that if the NCAA feels the Mid Athletic Conference is worthy of being in DIV I, then it's champion should be allowed to play for the NCAA championship and the only way that happens is with a real playoff.  Every conference champion is slotted in the playoff and let it be decided on the field.  Otherwise drop the unworthy and pick the four worthy conferences.

MetalDog

I think, eventually, college football will move to four 16 team leagues with two divisions each.  The division winners will play the conference championship game and those winners will play in the 4 team National Championship playoff.  What they do with the remaining 50 odd Div I teams is inconsequential.

Then you are going to have a four-game regular-season and 64 team playoff.

Then they need to get rid of an overall champion and just have 20 different conference champions and call it a day.

Big 10 has 3, which is probably about right.  Big questions marks around Nebraska, Penn State and Michigan.  Heck, I'm a little surprised to see Wisconsin ranked so high with a new coach.

But, as you say MD, doesn't matter who is placed in the polls for preseason, only matters who is ranked #1 at the end of the season.
