Does anybody have any experience with this? I just discovered it and it looks pretty worthwhile so far.

Have you tried Remnants of the Precursors?
A free remake of Master of Orion

Looks good, but I'm not really interested in a strict feature clone of MOOI. I think the genre has advanced too far since then and I just can't go back. The screens do look fantastic though.
Looks interesting. Imma check it out...
I have to say I thought this thread was going to be about poor old Orion, imprisoned for crimes he did not commit
I heard about Free Orion some years back. I didn't realize they were still working on it. ???
The forum says 2003, I followed this closely at the beginning, but haven't check in for years. Glad they are still plugging away.

Me too. Looks good. Should try it at some point.
I've played it from time to time as it developed.
This version is very impressive. Just remember they work on this very slowly.
There is no micromanagement. Combat is very arbitrary but not quite. It's not over in one turn. I had a battle for a system that lasted 3 turns.
Research is well done. Monsters are similar to the monsters in MOO2, but I found out in a game if you send your war fleets to attack the monster, that will permit your scout ships to go through the system. Eventually you can destroy the monsters.
Ship design is very similar to Stellaris or even Endless Space 1 or 2. - you put the components in the ships you want to design. That's it. But it has a purpose. You need better scouts? improve their sensors. You can build carriers, escort carriers, cruisers, corvettes, destroyers etc.
Weaponry right now is limited to beam and mass drivers. Projectiles such as torpedoes, missiles are being worked on as to how to implement them to the system. But you have fighters instead
How your fleets move is determined by supply. You get that by establishing colonies, and outposts. You can even build robotic ships and outposts. (good for asteroids)
Don't expect a ton of detail here. It's like a MOO and MOO2 but more the happy medium. Diplomacy is very simple - you can negotiate a peace treaty with some AI races.
On higher AI levels, they will turn on each other more aggressively, AND you. You will never get a truce with them on Maniacal level.
Colonization is based on race, and compatibility. So if you settle a desert world as humans, they will develop slower with unfavorable ratings compared to a Terra-based world Other races same.
But I like what they have so far. It's come a long way. Best part its free, and it can run on almost anything.

Imho, Master of Orion without diplomacy is not Master of Orion...to me, this is one of the core aspects of the game.
