Chapter 1 – From Napoléon 1806 to Napoléon 1807

For the second time in two years, the tsar's army arrived too late. The boldness, spirit and verve of the great army have defeated its ally, Prussia, in the battles of Jena and Auerstaedt. The retreat of the last Prussian troops led the French Army Corps in Poland, where the Russian battalions are assembling. To put an end to this new coalition, Napoleon must quickly defeat the Russians and conquer Königsberg where the King of Prussia, Frederick III, fled.

Chapter 2 – The march to Warsaw

Napoleon wants to prepare the next campaign he plans for 1807. He intends to lock the confederates on a field of maneuvers he has determined. The Vistula will serve as a barrier to the incoming clashes. The first objective of the great army is to secure the crossing points of the river and in particular Warsaw, the starting point of its offensive and its operations centre. Learning that the Russians, at the end of November 1806, moved to Warsaw, Napoleon launched his troops on forced marches to flush them out. Murat at lowicz, the 24 November, engages in a classic cavalry confrontation, repels the enemy forward forces. Frightened by the masses advancing towards them, the Russians cross back the Vistula and position themselves defensively near Pultusk.

Napoleon 1807 will propose at least seven scenarios on the various campaigns against the Russians of Bennigsen: Pultusk (December 1806-January 1807), Eylau (January and February 1807) and finally Friedland (June 1807).

Chapter 3 – The mystery Kamenski

Russian troops facing the great army are split into two contingents. The first under Benningsen's orders is already at work in Poland. The second, under command of Buxhowden, comes from Russia in support. It is composed mainly of the troops defeated at Austerlitz and its sole purpose is to support Bennigsen. The tsar desperately seeks a commander-in-chief to unite and lead them to the offensive because he wishes to wash the affront of the previous campaign. Field Marshal Général Kamenski, age 69, is his favorite. Glorified following his victories against the Turks, he left St. Petersburg for Poland on 22 November 1806. A month later he was present at Bennigsen's side but already showed his first failures. Completely overwhelmed by the task it has to do, he asks the tsar to be relieved due to a precarious health. The tsar still maintains him at his command and Kamenski launches his offensive to the west. Meanwhile, Napoleon began his movement from Warsaw and crossed the Wkra. The first clashes turn to the advantage of the French. Panicked, the field marshal ordered a general retreat to Russia and left the army, moving to Ostrolenka. He left Bennigsen alone in front of the French corps that started the envelopment of the Russian right.

The scenario of the Pultusk campaign of Napoleon 1807 shows three commanders in the Russian side: Bennigsen, Buxhowden and Kamenski. They follow the generic rules of Napoleon 1806 and have to be stacked with corps of their army. Kamenski by its only presence gives a malus to the movement of the stack it accompanies.

Chapter 4 – The battle of Pultusk

Taking advantage of the Russian staff's hesitations, Napoleon launched his offensive from the Vistula river. Faithful to his principles he relies on the vivacity of his troops to outflank his enemy and cut them from their lines of communication, Ostrolenka, to Russia. The corps of Davout and Augereau, associated with the cavalry reserve, began their bypass manoeuver while Lannes'corps aim was to fix them. But Poland in December is not Saxony a few months earlier, movement is laborious due to mud, snow and cold. The Russians managed to retreat easily without being surrounded and Lannes and his 20.000 men have to face 45.000 opponents determined to hold the town of Pultusk and its bridge over the Narew. On 26 December 1806, despite a precarious situation, Lannes attacked the strong Russian positions. A fierce and indecisive battle is fought where neither side can make a decision. The bogged down cavalry cannot exploit the victorious efforts of the infantry. The battle ends in a bloody status quo, a prelude to the clashes of future Napoleonic campaigns.

The mud makes its appearance in Napoleon 1807. After a round of rain the mud card is played meaning fatigue and doubled movement costs. The players will soon find out that the great rides of Napoleon 1806 are no longer valid.

Chapter 5 – 26 December 1806, Golymin, the twin battle of Pultusk

At the same time, further north, the second Russian contingent under Buxhowden is in full retreat. Completely dispersed by the bad weather and Kamenski's hesitation, the troops are in full disarray. Prince Galitzin in charge of the 4th Russian division is trying to gather some lonely regiments that he integrates with his division around the crossroad at Golymin, 4 miles north of Pultusk. Unfortunately for him, the village is also on the road of the 3th and 7th French Corps trying to overflow the Russians and cut the lines of communication of Bennigsen who is facing the 5th Corps of Lannes. A meeting battle is inevitable. But, like the Russians, the French under the orders of the marshals Augereau and Lannes stretch into long columns. Burdened by incessant rains, it turns in a confrontation of exhausted men and horses. The irresistible momentum of the French regiments and their great mobility, the intrinsic quality of the Great Army, are useless at Golymin. It's a matter of courage, tenacity and frontal assault. The Russian army has nothing to envy in this area. The battle is bloody and indecisive but at night, the Russians, as in Pultusk, can withdraw without being greatly damaged. Napoleon's maneuver to defeat quickly the Tsar's army failed.

With the losses suffered, the Great Army will lose its veterans from the wars of Italy, Austerlitz and Jena. Conscripts incorporated, even if they retain the courage of their elders, will weaken, due to lack of military experience, its general value. In Napoleon 1806, for every battle card draw, the French Player had 1 chance out of 2 to provoke a loss to their opponent, with Napoleon 1807, this probability drops to 1 chance out of 3. The great army finds itself at the level of its adversaries.

Napoleon 1807 - Chapter 6 - Winter quarters

The battles of Golymin and Pulstuk ended the first phase of Napoleon's campaign. Unable to surround and destroy the Russian Army, the Great Army cannot risk itself any further east. The troops, exhausted by incessant fighting and terrible weather, have an urgent need for rest. The Russians, on their side, are in a similar expectation, too happy not to be pursued by Murat's squadrons. The two armies therefore enter their winter quarters. Napoleon returned to Warsaw to prepare his spring offensive, but Bennigsen's intentions are going to be completely different...

(https://scontent-mrs1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/51865925_2033596736931992_5582981215876546560_n.png?_nc_cat=102&_nc_ht=scontent-mrs1-1.xx&oh=4e0de982773e3e12c8d744c9f26f6e71&oe=5CE88534)

Napoleon 1807 must simulate the entrance of the armies in their winter quarters. For this, each side has a card of the same name. As soon as a side totals 5 points of losses during the scenario, it adds this "winter quarter" card to its deck. When both players draw this event, the game ends at the end of the current turn. End of games will therefore be more random than for Napoleon 1806.

More than 20k$ and 200 backers! Thanks all for this great start.

Sorry for the long delay to do this update but we were on the road to Cannes, South of France, for the biggest game fair in France. If you attend it, you can meet us, and play Napoléon 1806 and 1807, on the "Carré d'Histoire". If you are not there, we will take pictures and videos to show you the lucky gamers battling on the Prussian and Polish battlefields.

Napoléon started its long march to Königsberg. He already defeated two of our Stretch Goal but there is still lots of them to overcome. So do not hesitate to spread the word around and recruit for the Great Army.

But let's take a look at the two stretch goals you tackled already.

The 4 pages booklet will allow you to jump into the battle right away. It will introduce simplified rules focusing on the main mechanisms of the system. Perfect to learn the game easily and to play with younger gamers.

The extra scenario will bring scenario count to 8. It is a "battle" scenario focusing on the Friedland battle. The two sides are face to face and the combat will erupt quickly all around the battlefield. There will be only one victor!

Napoléon keeps moving and we will print the Orders of Battle on cardboard 2mm!

Now, it's time to show the next challenges Napoléon must overcome!

You have been asking us a lot about dice. That's normal, we all love rolling dice! For those who own Napoléon 1806, we have dice in the box that we offered following our first successful KS campaign. They are custom engraved dice and they are great, as you can see on the picture at the end of this update.

The dice are meant to replace cards during battles. In fact, instead of revealing cards you throw the same number of dice. It changes the game as the deck of cards renew less quickly, and there are more probabilities to see a specific event happens. But whatever, the most important thing is that you will be able to do what you want, cards or dice, and have fun doing it!

One more thing, results on dice and cards depend on the side and the period. In Napoléon 1806 the French are at their top, so they get much better possible results than the Prussians. But in Napoléon 1807, French troops are exhausted, less efficient and they face a much tougher challenger... To show this, the French dice (and cards combat effects) are different in 1806 and 1807! That's the kind of persistence we bring to the Conquerors Series!

Lastly (this time) we are currently in the biggest gaming fair in France in Cannes. You will find below a few picture of people playing Napoléon 1806, and the demo game of Napoléon 1807!

There was the 300 of the Termopylae, and the 271... of Napoléon 1806!

271 this is the number of backers of our first project, Napoléon 1806. In these 271, there was friends, family members, and totally unknown persons that trusted two French guys lost in Ardèche in the South of France. I can believe that it was not a so easy decision to take!

For those that was in with us, I think that you remember it was a long and exhausting march. The project was funded just 4 hours before the end! So, again many thanks to you, the 271 that helped to make a dream come true.

Today we passed this milestone of 271 backers. As I speak you are 289 backers supporting us. We are more known than before, we released a game and we can count on a US partner, Golden Games (thanks Marc, Rachel, Rob, Nikki, Jon and Alex). So it is a bit easier than for Napoléon 1806. But again this is thanks to you that we will be able to release a new game and continue the great adventure we started two years ago.

Thanks.

We were in Cannes these last days to show and promote our games, Napoléon 1806 and Napoléon 1807. We ran lots of games with young conscripts but also with "grognards" of Napoléon 1806 that playtested some of the scenarios of Napoléon 1807.

We also had the opportunity to be interviewed live on BGG TV. I want to thanks the BGG crew there for the opportunity they offered us to show our game. It was really great.

If you want to see the interview, just follow this link :

Reminder : The KS of Napoléon 1807 is currently live. You have the opportunity to pledge for Napoléon 1806 as well as the oversized neoprene playmat you can see in the interview!

Kickstarter is live (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/shakos/napoleon-1807-when-the-game-meets-history-0?ref=5q55hv)

Thanks to you Napoléon continues his march toward Königsberg. He will soon be halfway through his long journey and it's time for us to sum-up what we've got so far and to unveil what's next...

But first, we think everyone would like to know that you're all getting a great deal on Napoléon 1806 & 1807. Normally, the game will retail in the US for approximately $100, so this Kickstarter is a special early bird campaign at roughly 30% off Retail Price! Be sure to spread the word to your friends to get this amazing once every couple of years kind of deal that is available only on Kickstarter for backers!

UNLOCKED SG:

I already spoke of the unlocked SG in previous update. So I won't tell much more now. I'll just show you what they look like as everything is ready, except for the layout of the booklet to integrate the changes, so we won't lose time due to unprepared SG delaying the arrival of the games for months.

Quickstart Rules. We are finishing the layout of the English version of these rules to share it with you, but we'll allow you to collect your thoughts about this new addition!

New card

NEW SG :

Cloth bag: This SG will allow us to get a nice green cloth bag with golden Russian eagle printed on it. Napoléon 1806 has its own blue French cloth bag, so Napoléon 1807 deserves also to have one! With it you will be able to keep your beloved army corps safe and tidy.

(https://cdn2.trictrac.net/documents/formats/dynamic/54/73/ba726d1743b1f74995f87b699854804a/documents/originals/22/ca/7eb6f1e630b5fc7e7054694c19416aafd97af0637124308beefef0e2a41c.jpeg)

Additionnal scenario: Next we will unlock the long Pultusk campaign. This scenario takes inspiration from the entire December campaign in Poland from the initial Russian offensive to the French counterattack and the failure of the enveloping maneuver desired by Napoleon. This is a very long scenario that will require at least 2 hours and 30 minutes of play to experience the full breadth of the scenario's depth.

Dual-layered OoB: You asked for it, and it's here! If we reach 80.000$ we will print the Orders of Battle on dual-layered cardboard with space for the Strength points cubes and sliders to track the fatigue. You can see below an example of what has been done for Unbroken, a great solo game published by Golden Games. So, no more risks to knock down the wooden pieces!

Great campaign: Then, the masterpiece, the long campaign... This huge scenario will allow you to play the three phases of the whole Polish campaign, from Pultusk to Friedland, without forgetting Eylau. The armies will first arrive on the battlefield and fight the first combats before being forced to enter Winter Quarters. Then fights will erupt again as the Russian armies will counter-attack in the middle of winter. If there is no winner, the two armies will have to stop hostilities due to the bad weather. The last phase of the battle will be a deadly fight. There must stay only one survivor in this brutal campaign...

We built the Napoléon series game system over several layers of difficulties. In this way you can discover the game easily and step by step. Our goal was to design a game suitable for younger players as well as grognards of historical gaming.

That's why we split the rules in two parts. The Rules of the Conscript introduce all the mechanisms of the system, however you play the game with the blocks representing the army corps laid flat on the gameboard. The Rules of the Grognard introduce the "Fog of War" and you play with the blocks upright so you don't know the identity of the corps you face. Moreover, by adding the vedettes (or light cavalry recon units) you introduce even more uncertainty about the strategy and moves of your opponent. This give endless gaming possibilities, and you can build up new strategies by using your vedettes to deceive your opponent.

But thanks to the experience we accumulated at the gaming fairs, where we had short time to explain and run a game, and the idea of the Golden Games team, we decided to add Quickstart rules to the game. This 4 pages booklet will allow you to jump into action in less than 5 minutes and to play a furious battle in 30 minutes. This is also the best way to learn the basics of the game system to young players or to help eurogamers discover historical and strategic war games.

You can download these Quickstart rules here (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1h24bGvb6HKYVyxvQb4rb0EaN-hiNYSa8)!

Do not hesitate to give us your feedback!

Post by: Shakos on March 17, 2019, 12:33:15 PM
We entered the last week of this crowdfunding and unlocked the Pultusk long scenario. It means that we will have now no less than 10 scenarios available for Napoléon 1807.

In the meantime we updated the rulebook (https://drive.google.com/open?id=1LdYnb23fwfw6gv9UZkX_yUdZkY8CkL3l) with corrections/clarification. It still has to go in final proofreading by the Golben Games team, so you can report mistake if you see some!

We also asked the factory for samples for the dual layered Orders of Battle. We are sure that we will tackle this SG that everyone expect during the final rush, so better anticipate! We hope that we will unlock a couple of other SG, so do not hesitate to share about the project around you. Napoléon needs you to reach Königsberg!

Concerning the dual-layered Orders of Battle we have 2 options to track fatigue. Either by using notches to put fatigue cylinders inside, or by using a "slider" with only one cylinder moving up or down the track. You can see pictures of both option below. We will test both and choose the most handy and less fiddly to use.

First of all the very good news, we unlocked the dual-layered OoB! That's a great achievement that will improve games ergonomics and we are really happy to have it added to the series. As discussed here and there, we have 2 options available and we will test both and report to you about it so you can follow the development!

Well, we are entering the last hours and we have quite a long journey yet to reach Königsberg. Time to reveal the last SG and hope that we will tackle a couple more before the end.

So we still have on our way to Königsberg :

The Grand Campaign: linking the 3 scenarios of 1807 and that we spoke about in a previous update.

Russia in 1806: This "what if" scenario explore the possibilities for the Russian Avant-garde to be on time in October 1806 to help the Prussians against the French. This scenario will bring new cards to be added to the Prussian deck in 1806, and, maybe, you will see some Russian corps entering the fray to battle in Saxony!

From 1806 to 1807: This expansion will allow you to take into account the results you achieve in Napoléon 1806 to modify slightly the setup in 1807. Depending on who performed the best, you will get advantages at the start of Napoléon 1807. Linking this one with Napoléon 1807 great campaign will offer you a long session of Napoleonic wargaming!

Cloth bag with French eagle: There are numerous wooden pieces in the game. So this way each side will have its own bag, and you won't mix the opponents in the same place!

One note. If we don't unlock the scenarios SG we will at least offer them in PDF format.
